Things discussed:

  • The Lions covered the spread!
  • Complain about an offense that scored on 6/9 drives
  • The 1st quarter/the commercial breaks/heat/tedium put the game in a worse light
  • Down G has been successful because opponents are straining to beat Power
  • Bredeson bad day? Weird mental errors, especially from the TEs
  • Higdon was missed. Evans looked more like a hamstring than a cramp :(
  • What is targeting?
  • The Proche problem: JKP needs to get back in because he's their answer. This is open so Michigan can defend jet sweeps
  • Caller: WRAP UP! Tackle with your arms.
  • Officiating crew was motley.
  • Michigan is playing more zone this year.
  • Throw more? How many times has Michigan gotten their quarterback healthy to the Ohio State game?
  • Scott Frost's mom.

We can do this because people support us. You should support them too so they’ll want to do it again next year! The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan we would have office jobs and STILL be depressed about losing by a touchdown at Notre Dame.

--------------------------------------------

1. Offense

starts at 1:00

Cranky beginning and they score on their last six drives. Shea looked like he didn't know what he was seeing when he got time: the INT and the shoulda-INT. Then he fixed it. The Gentry Zone is higher than the #Buttzone, should be more of the offense. Pass-blocking was non-disastrous. DPJ Day. Good Evans/Bad Evans and how to use Chris Evans. Patterson needs to keep it more often on zone reads. Felt like gameplan was Higdon-based and they had to use Evans at gametime. Extended Wilson time: pretty good. Ruiz busts.

2. Defense

starts at 30:54

If SMU gets yards it's gonna be James Proche. It was Proche. Slants slants slants—dude just beat Kinnel and Metellus on those. Corners held that down—why no Ambry in Dime? Why not Lavert Hill on that guy all day? Why not do something? Defense got a metric ton of crap penalties: Hudson timed his "offsides" blitz perfectly because he timed the jet motion. Okay-est PI: Ross. Worst PI: Kinnel when the ball hits a GA 10 yards into the sideline AND it wasn't interference. If you're getting held on edge runs go down because they won't call it otherwise. So weird they never call it anymore when arms are outside shoulderpads. Dwumfour was a pass-rushing specialist in this one—that's what he's good at.

3. Special Teams & Feelingsball

starts at 54:23

One of the least fun games ever gone to. This commercial break obviated by Corporation X. Nordin's field goals can get out of the stadium. SMU squibs. Sonny Dykes what are you doing, running into the line twice then punting, then getting your cheap yards at the end to keep us in the stadium. In 22 minutes of game time they had an entire basketball game's worth of commercial breaks. Sitting in the stadium I feel like a sap. What's that paying for because it's not professional referees.

4. Around the Big Ten wsg Jamie MacMillan

starts at 1:14:56

Big Ten lost 7 games to unranked opponents. Michigan's next four opponents lost to Troy, Akron, Temple, and BYU. IU has some good receivers when they're healthy, have a hard time with running QBs and Lewerke looms. Kansas beat Rutgers better than Ohio State did; Sitkowski had another three picks. #CannonIntheD is dead. Wisconsin upset is insane—BYU had four position-switch defenders. Kasim Hill looked worse against Temple than Texas. USF puts 600 yards on Illinois. Nebraska-Troy: UNL still outgained them by 100 yards, didn't have Martinez, Troy is not terrible. Refs hand OSU a win over TCU, who survived with a JuCo left tackle vs Bosa.

    --------------------------------------------

    1. Offense vs WMU

    starts at 1:00

Michigan’s pass protection was good but were never really given opportunities. Run blocking wasn't a quantum leap forward compared to previous, but that’s not bad because Michigan’s run blocking is already good. Shea’s throws were mostly very good, he feels like the 5 star he was touted to be. Tru Wilson and Jake McCurry looked sharp in garbage time. Can we see more Hudson and Honigford please?

    2. Defense vs WMU

    starts at 17:55

Carlo Kemp was the big story of the week, earning a net 7.5 on this week’s UFR. Who knows if Dwumfour will ever emerge, but Kemp is on track to be a 3-tech starter. Kwitty Paye looked good. Josh Ross looks like he’s pulling away from Devin Gil. LaVert Hill is not A+ yet but just an A is fine.

    3. Gimmicky Top Five: Real Schools That Sound Fake

    starts at 37:04

Brian and Seth get animated about North Texas and armadillos. Then they begin naming their top 5 real colleges that sound fake..

    4. SMU Preview

    starts at 58:56

SMU got shredded by North Texas and then TCU. They’re not good and probably the worst team on Michigan’s schedule this year. They have a Kansas transfer at tackle (!). The Mustangs have a pretty good slot receiver though. There’s just not much talent on this roster anywhere and a ton of transfers.

    Things discussed:

    • Craig Ross’s radio firsts
    • Good to pound a bad opponent rather than struggling, e.g. Cincy, AF
    • Door is wide open for freshman tackles.
    • Down G: Second week in a row my Neck Sharpies is the first topic of the show. Thanks Sam!
    • We won’t see it as often in the future: this was a wrinkle that was good against WMU.
    • Running backs and WMU being bad caused the good day on the ground.
    • Lions vs 49ers odds.
    • Craig’s history lesson: Detroit Wolverines were bought by New York just so they could steal Benny Friedman, so Detroit had to steal the Portland Lions.
    • At 17:50 they come back to Michigan’s OL if you want to skip the Lions. Hudson looked very good in his limited time.
    • Tru Wilson had one of those flip-a-guy cut blocks
    • EXTREMELY low pass protection opportunities says Michigan still thinks they can’t pass block.
    • SMU: Not good.
    • Shea turns easy throws into easy catches. Missed 3 throws.
    • Sam: Brandon Watson has been M’s best corner.
    • Kemp does pretty well against a meatball
    • Hurst was Hurst-y by this point in Dwumfour’s career.
    • Josh Ross is comin’. Think he’s your WLB and gonna have a great career.

    --------------------------------------------

    1. Offense

    starts at 1:00

Booing after the first drive is a new level of grumpiness. Deatherage is the greatest football last name. That cut that Chris Evans can make should be a regular part of the offense. Four or five Shea Patterson throws were very impressive. Redshirts and backup hour.

    2. Defense

    starts at 30:28

At what point does it become not okay to crack a shutout with a field goal when that can't help you win? It was blocked, but ethically permissible. The 3-tech rotation is Kemp now. Hill in the slot is pleasing. Hawkins played well again—working his way onto the field—he's the next safety up after the starters. Ross is now leading that WLB race. Brian doesn't believe we call Watson #Swatson so he owes me a candy bar. Backup hour: Carl Myers played before Jeter, concern at DT depth now?

    3. Special Teams & Feelingsball

    starts at 50:34

Nordin misses a 40ish-yard field goal—doesn't make us feel fuzzy. Will Hart punts for 170 yards on three punts tho. If he's going to average 56 yards per punt they can put a redshirt on Robbins. Props to Western Michigan's big big boy at tight end. God bless everyone who doesn't say dumb stuff at a football game.

    4. Around the Big Ten wsg Jamie MacMillan

    starts at 1:06:36

Jonathan Taylor fumbles, Wisconsin still rumbles. Illinois wanted more flair out of their last win of 2018. Rutgers can now score on Ohio State, plays Kansas next. Antoine Winfield Jr.'s crazy notwithstanding, a bit close for Fresno, but their walk-on QB is better than guys they had before. Penn State pulled away in the 2nd half in the rain, Pitt is only running and their Aussie punter can't hold onto the ball. El Assico shoulda ended 6-3. Indiana football has completed DeBorded. The Golden Age of Eastern Michigan football. Northwestern loses the Quiz Bowl. Nebraska almost beats Colorado and almost doesn't lose their only quarterback. MSU El-Assico went to whoever learned to stop running first; State's secondary is not good. I don't want to know who the Arizona State running back is.

      1. Notre Dame: The Hideously Depressing Things

      starts at 1:00

The tackles cannot cannot cannot pass block—Runyan was indeed worse than JBB on about as many (not many) chances. Defensive tackle was really the letdown—Dwumfour had two big bad plays but also some just bad plays where he was blown out. Lo Marshall feels like the starter. Mone’s snaps generate some discussion.

      2. Banner Stories with Jon Falk

      starts at 16:25

      3. Notre Dame: The Nice Things

      starts at 35:48

Seth asks about things that aren’t hideously depressing from the Notre Dame game. Wide Receivers! Patterson! Weakside linebacker! Brad Hawkins got off to a bumpy start but then settled down.

      4. WMU Preview

      starts at 50:27

Jon Wassink was very bad against MSU last year but now he’s good? Broncos are a passing spread team with solid talent for a MAC team, some NFL dudes. Drake Harris returns to Ann Arbor and Seth predicts that Michigan won’t be dunked on by Harris. WMU is a blitz heavy defense that puts its safeties at 6 yards. Incredulous Brian counts players on a screen. Seth explains his middle school fighting career.

      • Dwumfour, Dwumfour hype got turtled.
      • Hawkins tipped the ball to the guy. M used a lot more Cover 2—Hawkins was good at it.
      • M had the right D scheme: make Wimbush throw bombs.
      • Patterson's got to find the Butt Zone.
      • Caller asks about my Neck Sharpies: M thought they could get away with it, didn't. Too much of this 2008 stuff in offenses since 2008.
      • JBB didn't get used much in the run game
      • Why don't you Manball?
      • Craig Ross pulls out a Trotsky reference that Brian gets.
      • If Michigan doesn't change personnel and strategies to compensate for the OT deficiencies this year they're losing 3 or 4 more games.
      • Don't ask them to say it; the gameplan tells you what the coaches think about their tackles.

      1. Mourning

      starts at 1:00

David talks about the press box. Brian is staring down a season of everyone angry at each other and the takers leaping over themselves to channel that anger into relevance. We try to talk Brian into continuing to do this for a living despite doing this in the most depressing period in Michigan football history since the 1960s.

      2. Offense

      starts at 19:12

Half of the time Michigan's offensive tackles were asked to not get the quarterback killed they didn't get the quarterback killed. Runyan even managed to ruin plays where he was given a job like "pretend to lose this block" and still screwed it up.

      3. Defense

      starts at 42:52

Much happier section, for the second half. Brad Hawkins got lights in his eyes. Hill got beat. A few bad calls made it harder than it should have been to get off the field.

      4. Around the Big Ten wsg Jamie MacMillan

      starts at 1:12:06

        1. Bringing Back the Notre Dame Rivalry and ND Offense Preview

        starts at 1:00

It feels good to play Notre Dame. Why don't we do this? Swarbrick? It's not money, because people are throwing $500 at this thing. Their running game graduated, except the quarterback, who can't throw.

        2. Notre Dame: The Defense

        starts at 25:46

Brian has a great name for the Bo Store. Seth is flabbergasted by a 5-star who's not a 5-star but anyway he's huge and from Louisiana and not at offensive tackle. On knife-style linebackers.

        3. Michigan Feelings: The Sad Part
