1. BIG MEN

starts at 1:00

Five went in the first seven picks, though not necessarily in the order we would’ve taken them. Is there Tom Izzo shade? Of course.

2. B1G MEN

starts at 22:33

We run down the draftees out of the Big Ten, including Los Angeles Lakers center and LeBron James’ teammate Moe Wagner. Is there Tom Izzo shade? Of course.

3. LUKA vs. TRAE

The biggest trade of the night inextricably ties the draft’s top two lead guards together. The guess here is that’s great news for Luka Doncic and Dallas and much less so for Trae Young and Atlanta.

4. WINNERS AND LOSERS

starts at 34:33

The Mavs had a great haul even beyond Doncic. Michael Porter Jr. may be the ultimate boom/bust. As is the NBA norm, it’s better to be young and unproven than an experienced non-superstar.

1. There were many commits

starts at 1:00

The state of the recruiting industry: ESPN has checked out so blowhards can still cash a check, Rivals is good when it's a top 150 guy going to their camp. Scout and 247 have merged. As a result we have a lot of complaints about the state of the recruiting industry.

The 2020 guys: Khalil Branham has a jugs machine with noodles. Chicago Warren: "man-child." Seldon is a Jermain Crowell defensive back.

2. Inside the Crooked Blue Line with Steve Lorenz, Offense

starts at 19:45

A lot of this class looks like their rankings could go up. Rating over ranking. Elite11 is not as strong this year, Cade held. Charbonnet: Fournette Light, see you in the Top100. Eric Gray might have done too much. GJII: Michael Barrett disease. Erick All: if Iowa and Wisconsin like him we do too. Trente Jones: one of those Stanford-Michigan guys. Barnhart: Paw-Paw plays the Phil Paea schools.

3. Inside the Crooked Blue Line with Steve Lorenz, Defense

starts at 47:19

Hinton can't get higher. Herron: maybe not moving up but had one of the best SPARQ scores. Ojabo: OSU and PSU, one of the best camp performances since Harbaugh came, pretty good quote. Newburg: Motor of Winovich, plug for Bill Greene (247 scout who does great scouting). Velasquez: 87 is the rating to annoy Michigan State fans, perfect Viper. Quinten Johnson: Khaleke physically, top 10 SPARQ, got a Bama camp offer, can't believe he's not a 5-star of the year. CT: Michigan thinks he's a 4-star. D.J. Turner transferring to IMG (another top SPARQ score) star ranking doesn't match those offers—one of M's top corners in the class, like Gemon Green. Mazi's big.

MGoPodcast 9.Supplemental: Abdul El-Sayed

Submitted by Seth on June 28th, 2018 at 5:14 PM

Wherein we interview Michigan gubernatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed. This podcast is not and does not constitute an endorsement of the candidate. When a former Michigan athlete (lacrosse before it went varsity) is running for governor and reads the site and asks to come on the podcast we say "Okay, but we're not lobbing softballs".

Abdul did this whole interview without any notes and was very engaged in the toughest questions we could throw at him, so a lot of this interview went off anyone's idea of a script and got into some granular back-and-forth on complicated issues and events. That makes it hard to write up—what do you leave out?—so I'm going to present MGoBlog's questions below and you can get Abdul's answers by listening to the podcast.

Things discussed:

  • Abdul's incredibly depressing Wikipedia page. How offering to serve got him thrown into a commission to run the Detroit Health Department after the emergency manager had shut it down. What did he do there?
  • (at 7:30) Flint Water Crisis: What's the DEQ gotta do now? If the "money's there" where is it, how much will it cost? Could it have been faster? Will anyone believe them when they say the water's clean? What's Flint fatigue? How were the measurements made?
  • (at 12:20) Lead Abatement Report: After Flint stuff his report on lead poisoning was changed? By whom? What level of lead is "safe"? How to operate a bureaucracy, setting culture of serving the public versus "closing the ticket."
  • (at 18:20) Single-payer "MichCare" plan? How does it control costs, what's the upfront investment and transition costs, how does it compare to other plans? What are the incentives in the system and how do you change that?
  • (at 23:20) Vis a vis recent Supreme Court decisions and a White House that would have substantially different views on, uh, civics: What is under the scope of a governor? Specifically would he as governor use state resources to support ICE and enforce federal immigration policy and political incarceration he doesn't agree with?
  • (at 27:54) Brian's YIMBY hour: How do you address the relationship between housing and property assessments caught in an impossible Proposition A situation between rate of housing prices and rate of inflation? How do you decide the mils? How often do you do it? Note: on this question Abdul primarily addressed over-assessment that was leading to tax foreclosures in communities adjacent to gentrification, and education funding, while Brian was asking more about the Ann Arbor housing crisis (where nobody can sell their home). Brian recommends City Observatory dot org. Also SightLine.
  • (at 35:31) Education: School of Choice effect on school districts in lower income communities. Promulgation of charter schools? Funding of charter schools?
  • (at 37:30) Lightning Round: Regents for Michigan State: can we get two D's who didn't go to Michigan State? Ballot proposal to legalize marijuana? Ballot proposal against partisan redistricting? Plan to reduce the cost of a college education? Favorite Michigan athlete of the last 15 years?

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS RECAP

starts at 1:00

LeBron is very good. The rest of the Cavs aren’t, especially when Kevin Love is concussed, but that didn’t quite make the difference against a Boston team that would’ve won this series handily if they had their two best players. Alas.

EAST POSTMORTEMS AND OH MY LORD WHAT ARE YOU DOING BRYAN COLANGELO

1. WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS RECAP

starts at 1:00

Houston would’ve won. Then Chris Paul’s hamstring failed him and the inevitable Golden State onslaught came. Also, it probably would’ve been good not to have a historically bad shooting performance in Game 7.

2. FINALS PREVIEW

starts at 20:17

It’ll be compelling to watch LeBron face a Sisyphean task. Golden State, unfortunately, wins every other matchup on the floor. Your hosts have a heated debate over whether the Cavs win one or zero games.

3. ROCKETS POSTMORTEM

---------------------------------

1. THE EAST

starts at 1:00

TORONTO-CLEVELAND: LeBron LeBron’d, the Raptors deflated, and Drake made a very ill-advised life choice.

BOSTON-PHILADELPHIA: This is not the Terry Rozier who played at Louisville. Boston a big step up in defense for Philly and it showed in Game 1. Sixers can still win this if they adjust and get more threes from Redick and Belinelli.

2. THE WEST

starts at 23:15

HOUSTON-UTAH: Game 1 was the first Utah loss of the year in which they shot 50%+ from the field because James Harden, Chris Paul, and Clint Capela went off. The Jazz fought back to steal a game on the road with Donovan Mitchell running the point and Joe Ingles making everything. Someone should really guard Joe Ingles.

GOLDEN STATE-NEW ORLEANS: Is basically over already. Anthony Davis is fun, though.

NICKNAME QUIZ: Ace mostly stumps Alex, accidentally gives away an answer.

3. POSTMORTEMS

starts at 48:26

OKLAHOMA CITY: Unless something very unexpected happens with Paul George, this looks like the end of any hope for OKC to win a title in the era of three MVPs in three draft classes. Melo is so, so washed, also lacks self-awareness.

INDIANA: Everybody comes back. Is Dipo a true franchise player? Ace thinks so, Alex is a little more skeptical. Big question going forward is what to do with young, raw center Myles Turner.

MILWAUKEE: Have they fired Joe Prunty yet? Anyway, this team is mostly locked into a mediocre roster and will go as far as Giannis can take them, though better coaching, especially on defense, could unlock greater potential.

WASHINGTON: Absolutely cap-boned. Poor man’s Grizzliesdom awaits.

---------------------------------

1. EASTERN CONFERENCE

TORONTO-WASHINGTON (starts at 1:55): Wizards fought back on the strength of Wall and Beal, but Toronto has the 3-2 series edge and a much better supporting cast for their star backcourt.

CLEVELAND-INDIANA (at 11:41): LeBron and the Yobs, yet that’s good enough to probably make the second round because LeBron.

PHILLY-MIAMI (at 17:56): The Sixers let Dwyane Wade have what may have been his final big moment in Miami before easily dispatching them. Philly looks like the team to beat in the East.

BOSTON-MILWAUKEE (at 22:48): Going to seven games because [checks notes] Joe Prunty finally discovered that Thon Maker can play basketball quite well. Winner of this is going to have a very tough time with the Sixers.

2. WESTERN CONFERENCE

NICKNAMES (at 30:12): Ace tries to get revenge on Alex, fails to remember that Alex has deep Thunder knowledge.

HOUSTON-MINNESOTA (at 37:35): Houston went supernova and remains Ace’s pick to win it all. Minnesota’s defense got hamblasted.

OKLAHOMA CITY-UTAH (at 44:58): The Thunder needed an epic comeback to avoid elimination and we’re both skeptical they can avoid it for much longer. Russ is great, but Melo is washed, and Utah is the better-coached, more complete team.

NEW ORLEANS-PORTLAND/GOLDEN STATE-SAN ANTONIO (at 1:01:41): Both series are over, so this became a NOLA/GSW preview. Anthony Davis unleashed at center. Jrue Holiday is pretty darn good, too, but probably not as good as he was in this series. Next round should go GSW’s way unless Steph’s injury lingers longer than expected.

3. POSTMORTEMS

starts at 1:16:31

PORTLAND: Can they move CJ McCollum? If not, cap-strapped into being good but not great.

SAN ANTONIO: If they can’t patch things up with Kawhi, it could be an ugly end to an incredible run.

MINNESOTA: Promising young team but one of those youngsters already has an albatross contract.

MIAMI: Blow it all up in two years.

Last one of the year. Ira’s here for Sam.

Things discussed:

  • Is Shea Patterson eligible to be eligible yet?
  • Big Ten Basketball: bounce-back? Depends on who comes back. “If Fernando gets good advice he’ll be advised ‘you will not develop any more at Maryland.’”
  • Jaren Jackson translates into Kwame Brown? Dad said go back to school to get more mature.
  • Craig watched Iggy Brazdeikis film from two years ago. Comps: Scottie Pippen, Jalen Rose, James Harden, but less athletic, still really athletic. Those guys are A+ he’s an A. Right-handed but shoots left. Not a great off-the-dribble shooter but will knock it down on catch and shoot.
  • Nunez: Tim Hardaway-level perfect shot.
  • Johns: Should be the new Duncan Robinson.
  • DeJulius: Derrick Walton with his shot already developed, especially in his off-the-dribble stuff. Love to have a late shot great idea again, and a free thrower. PG is hardest job to do well in Beilein’s system, but shooting makes him useful before he gets there.
  • Austin Davis can be Jordan Morgan plus a couple inches. Never give up on a big until they’re a junior and can’t play any defense at all.
  • Spring things: Missed having a spring game to sanity-check the spring football bits. We believe in Dwumfour, but the JBB hype says the freshmen can’t pass protect yet; worry if he’s still starting in fall.
  • Patterson scout: Tate Foricer’s problem wasn’t football. Lost faith in Peters? Irrelevant; what’s important is Patterson seems to be a better quarterback right now.
  • End of season takedump: softball and baseball y’all! Natalya Rodriguez has such feet—got charged with an error that’s a hit with anyone else on the field. Baseball started 4-11 and now on a 20-game win streak! Damn the Big Ten: why can’t you have the softball/baseball schedules opposite during conference season so there’s a game every weekend.

You can catch the entire episode on Michigan Insider's podcast stream on Podbean.

Segment two is here. Segment three is here.

1. The Offense wsg Seth Fisher (that’s me!)

starts at 1:00

Peters is running with the ones, Shea is probably the guy, Milton in the future. Black and DPJ, Crawford moving to 41 is probably not a Lytle reference. We’re all for Gentry in the slot. Offensive line: Hudson is our rooting interest, Onwenu was fine last year, Ruiz is probably real, Runyan at RT isn’t ideal. Super max protect Gentry 500 FTW! I like the way Lewerke.

2. The Defense wsg Seth again (yes THAT me!)

starts at 29:53

The happy section, where we bring up the 2014 Rutgers game, the Cleveland Browns,  Brady Hoke Punt Fest 2013, and several times the 2010 defense. Hype for Dwumfour started last year; we disagree somewhat on how ready the redshirt freshmen are. Zordich ornery after his corners were all injured but Ambry. Brian is against safeties. Lots of linebacker weapons. We pronounce Uche correctly.

3. Recruiting Football, Basketball, Hockey

starts at 57:55

Three sports, three football commits, a bazillion hockey commits, and lots of interest in the basketball program. Newburg is a wrastler. Herron is clearly waiting for Stanford admissions to decommit. Stewart committed from Connecticut, his school’s one to watch (2020 ND quarterback commit). Iggy finally jumped to the composite top 50. DeJulius and Castleton late jumps too. Could be better than the Fresh Five class. Girard? Balas thinks so. Hockey crootin.

4. Moritz and Matthews Draft Futures

starts at 1:31:15

This section became a 2018 hoops class segment. Expected Moe to go—unless his arms grew longer he wasn’t going to be a better NBA prospect. Find usage elsewhere, more pick and roll than pop, Teske D on the floor all game. Matthews is going to find out what he needs to work on—has NBA talent but probably won’t get a draft grade.
