Go down Commerce from the River Walk and turn down a little street called Sycamore, and you can't miss it.image

Good beer, street ta co trailer on site. MGoTourney sponsor HomeSure Lending will buy first beer round from 6-7 if you give the code word, “Title Muppets.”

As mentioned yesterday, we’ve got places for you to watch the Big Ten Tournament if you’re in/around Ann Arbor or New York.

If you’re in Ann Arbor tomorrow…

image

As I mentioned yesterday, so long as Michigan survives Iowa, we’re going to get together TOMORROW at 2:30 at Wolverine Brewing for our first MGo-gamewatch party. Sponsor Nick Hopwood of Peak Wealth Management offered to cover the first couple rounds and some food for our tables.

Please let us know if you’re coming so we can get a halfway decent count (if we run out of space signups get first priority: https://goo.gl/forms/t0F28mhfnYRRbKPh2. We’ve got about 35 people signed up so far.

Brian at least will be there to represent us—if they let me out of the hospital (and my wife of a recently hospitalized man allows it) I’ll try to be there too.

---------------------

If you’re in New York anytime during the BTT…

Get ye to pub of friend of the blog, Dewey’s Pub

IMG_6898

MGoReaders have built a meeting ground near Madison Square Garden at this pub owned by regular MGoBlog reader Kevin Blauch.

Dewey’s Pub, on West 30th Street, is running March Madness specials all month ($30 domestic buckets $35 import and $120 case specials) along with happy hour specials ($5 bud light, sam adams and laganitas, $6 well drinks).

If you show up in M gear and/or tell the manager you’re an MGoBlog reader, he’ll give you a free Bud Light as well. If you can’t make any BTT games, or you want to catch the end of one after work, head over to Dewey’s. Those of you going to the game should go by afterwards to celebrate/commiserate.

THE EVENT: So long as Michigan survives Thursday (and your band of health-compromised bloggers do as well), we’re going to get together this Friday at 2:30 at Wolverine Brewing for our first MGo-gamewatch party. Sponsor Nick Hopwood of Peak Wealth Management, who also sponsors this post, offered to cover the first couple rounds and some food for our tables. Please let us know if you’re coming so we can get a halfway decent count (if we run out of space signups get first priority: https://goo.gl/forms/t0F28mhfnYRRbKPh2

Also if you’re in New York, Dewey’s Pub down the street from MSG tends to collect the MGoBlog contingent after the game.

THE SPONSOR: How are you managing your savings? Your insurance? What kind of accounts do you have for your kids? Our MGoFinancial Planner Nick Hopwood from Peak Wealth Management is the guy to talk to.

Brian: Ugh, naming a team without a center is like naming a football team without an OL. My pet peeve is first team all conference basketball teams that wouldn't be very good. And this is a season with Ethan Happ and Isaac Haas!

Seth: Haas got so much love all season on BTN I was both surprised and totally fine with him being left out. I But I agree even Beilein wouldn't play a lineup of Bridges-Palmer-KBD-Carr-Edwards.

Ace: Jackson freshman of the year, KBD player of the year, Duncan Robinson(!) 6th man of the year.

Seth: This is the part where Ace is mad Poole didn't make any of these teams.

Ace: They probably got the right guys since Poole emerged so late, though that lineup doesn’t pass the “this would work on the court” test.

Brian: Two pure Cs might be worse than none. Ugh, all broken, I'm just naming my first team because guh.

C Isaac Haas. Not Haas's fault he's got a windmill on the bench behind him and a team around him. Haas has per-minute stats that stack up with anyone, spearheaded the nation's #15 eFG defense, and plays on an actually good team. Happ's numbers are silly in part because he has one other guy who can play on his team; he's more effective on offense but doesn't bring anywhere near the rim protection Haas does. The Mo mismatch applies to both of these guys; Haas was much better at attacking at the other end of the floor.

Ace: Happ is also way worse at free throws, which is a big deal for both of them. Totally agree with this one. In general, everyone seems to have overvalued raw numbers.

Haas hit one fewer FT on 31 fewer attempts in B1G play.

Alex: PUT SOME RESPECK ON ETHAN HAPP'S NAME, ACE AND BRIAN.

[After THE JUMP: how long until Ace says Poole is robbed you think?]

THIS ARTICLE HAS A SPONSOR: If you haven’t yet talked to our MGoFinancial Planner Nick Hopwood from Peak Wealth Management, THIS THURSDAY IS YOUR CHANCE.

jolly-pumpkin-coupons

Since some of us need to be on the road on Friday, we’re going to do the MGoRadio episode at 5-7pm this Thursday at The Jolly Pumpkin on Main Street. Come down and join us upstairs; Nick will be there to buy the first round!

MGoBlog is not responsible for any advice or other communication provided to an investor by any financial advisor, and makes no representations or warranties as to the suitability of any particular financial advisor and/or investment for a specific investor.

--------------------------------

Nick’s question: So we’re butt?

Seth: Is that your question?

Nick: Phrase it how you want. In the pre-season you said we wouldn’t be butt. Are we butt?

Seth: You mean now that it’s midseason how have our expectations shifted relative to what they were this summer?

Nick: Sure. Actually can we break it up into four questions?

  1. What position group has exceeded preseason expectations most?
  2. What position group has been most disappointing?
  3. What are you hoping to see change or improve over the second half of the season?
  4. How has your season outlook changed?

--------------------------------

1. What position group has exceeded preseason expectations most?

Ace: Going with the cornerbacks. Mike Zordich’s preseason presser certainly didn’t assuage fears that the Long-Hill duo needed another year in the incubator, nor did the continued presence of Brandon Watson, a player we thought was relatively limited, alongside those two. Those fears turned out to be unfounded. Hill has lived up to the hype as the second coming of Jourdan Lewis with fewer busted plays than I thought he’d have given his high school profile; Long has been nearly as good; Watson turned into “Swatson” during the Florida game and has maintained a level of play worthy of cutting into the other two’s snaps.

image
Zordich set the bar about where that Hoosier’s second foot was. [Bryan Fuller]

--------------------------------

Seth: Fine, Ace, take the most obvious answer. That lets me gush about the linebackers. McCray, the only returning starter, has been McCray for better and worse, and the other LB spot had to replace an instant NFL starter in Gedeon. They've gotten that and more: Ol' Doomsquirrel, Ol' Pogstackles, Ol' Devin Bush was such a revelation he's already got two prospectin' names, and Furbush made a lot of that happen.

Ace: We’re officially abusing the prospectin’ names.

(Also, given the way QBs react to him, I submit Ol’ Footsteps as Bush’s prospectin’ name. I’m a giant hypocrite, yes.)

David: Ol' Giant Hypocrite?

Ace: Welp. Now I’ve got two prospectin’ names.

Seth: If you claim a third I'm calling Devin Bush Ol' Four Prospectin' Names.

The Event

image

We are having an event right now, since Matt and my wives kicked us out of our respective houses for being too excited about football.

Football. football. fooooooootballl. sorry sorry.

unnamed
Your host. Also seriously if you’re buying or refinancing reach out to him. Every time I recommend him I get thanked for doing so.

If you’re in the same boat, Matt Demorest of HomeSure Lending is getting us all together right this moment to raise a glass and jibber “football” at each other instead of at loved ones and pets.

WHERE: 327 E. Hoover, Ann Arbor. It’s the first thing on Hoover after the train tracks after Elbel Field. You remember walking by it from your college days. It was formerly Purchase Radio Supply.

Now it’s an amazing indoor tailgate space owned by the same guy who built the MGoPatio. It doesn’t look like much yet but it’s got it where it counts. See that garage door on the far right? That leads to a renovated indoor space that looks kinda like how Leopold’s used to.

WHAT WE DOING THERE? At the end of the podcast will be a Q&A session so this is your chance to be on the MGoPodcast and ask that question that’s been bugging you about this year. Then we watch the Indiana-Ohio State game.

WHAT WE HAVING? Matt’s getting us a couple of kegs of good stuff and Scratch BBQ & Catering is making BBQ and mac & cheese and sides and dessert.

HISTORY OF THIS: This is our third Football Eve, and it was all Matt’s idea because we were talking each other into insanity before the first Harbaugh game. That was a Wednesday night because Utah was a Thursday and we still overflowed Ashley’s. Last year we moved it to Wolverine Brewing and still there wasn’t enough seating.

MGo-Welcome Wednesday at the Alumni Association Tomorrow

MGo-Welcome Wednesday at the Alumni Association Tomorrow

Submitted by Seth on March 7th, 2017 at 5:30 PM

The short:

?? MGoBloggers serving bagels at the Alumni Association’s Welcome Wednesday.

@? The UM Alumni Association Building, 200 Fletcher Street.

ETA? Thing is 8AM to noon tomorrow.

Y? The bagels (+coffee, hot cocoa, tea, blue books) are free.

The long:

Here’s how you get a job after college. One day near graduation you will think of this brilliant tweet in the subject of your interest. It will get picked up and retweeted by some super highly respected person in that field, which will get hundreds of prospective employers to follow you. When you post your graduation photo they’ll all DM you, say they recognize your genius, and offer you your dream job on the spot, provided you’re willing to work from home and occasionally wear pants.

Here’s how you actually get a job after college. A good connection you made who saw you were super serious about going into their business will recommend you because you’ve stayed in touch. Then you have an interview, at which you will be judged in part on your selection of pants.

Here’s one way if you’re a student at Michigan to score connections to a ridiculous network of successful people. So the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan has this tradition on Wednesdays when school’s in session where you come to their main building on 200 Fletcher Street (like behind the Michigan League) and get free bagels, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Once you have your free food you’re welcome to talk to AAUM people, or sit on a couch with some friends, or meet other students, or just grab a table area and study.

Here’s the hook. Sometimes you get served by someone interesting, like the school president, or the women’s basketball team, or that time Big Jon Falk came with his favorite water bottle.

image

Other times they have to fill in with local football bloggers. Tomorrow is one of those times, when Brian, Ace and I will be on hand for the bagel-serving/schmoozing. It runs from 8AM to noon. We’ll have at least one of us there the whole time.

Also free blue books. I wish I’d learned of this before senior year: any time you go into their building you can walk out with free blue books. They will also make you a set of 30 business cards.

How do you tell a student from a vagabond blogger type? Only a student can look that exhausted yet carry a backpack so unaware of the treasonous nature of back muscles. But bring your M-Card in case they doubt you.

Why the Alumni Association? Very shortly you’ll be one, i.e. an old person like me who goes around answering “I wish I’d made more connections” to “what do you wish you’d done better in college?” At that point what you know won’t matter nearly as much as who you know, and the Michigan alumni network is so good at this that the football team makes it the centerpiece of their recruiting pitch. All those wonderful goodies that they give us to be members—game tickets, tailgates, local clubs and events, trips, scholarships etc.—are to keep that network engaged. The sooner you tap in, the more you can get out of it.

[Evan Aaron / The Michigan Daily]

A special Schembechlerian edition of MGoRadio from the new Bo Store, 333 S. Main Street, downtown Ann Arbor. It is against code or something to advertise refreshments in a retail store, but I can tell you that Big Ed Muransky and Not As Big As Ed Muranksy 3,000 Year Old Druid Craig Ross will be there with us. Stop in and try on the latest jacket that I really really want. If enough of us are around after maybe we’ll do Pretzel Bell or something.

TOMORRROW NOON TO 2:30:

image

For the 40-something-ieth time the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan will be hosting a massive Homecoming Tailgate. This year’s is again at Ooserbaan Fieldhouse, but they’re changing things up—rather than have Brian getting red-faced on the main stage, we’ll have Brian red-faced yelling at Iowa-Wisconsin, plus four other activity centers, each with an array of food, activities, and touchable banners and such. This year's event will of course include tons of spirited entertainment, appearances by numerous University officials, games, and a host of fun for Wolverines of all ages. Then the Michigan Marching Band will once again lead us to the Big House prior to kickoff.

Bring cash for the cash bar, with wine and North Peak beer.

HT Liz Crowe for finding the photo

Harbaugh? A few weeks back a member of the planning committee for Ann Arbor Pioneer's annual athletic department fundraiser thingy pinged me all excited about something. With this year's event taking place the same weekend as the Harbros' "Greatest Coaching Clinic of All-Time" it was the perfect opportunity to induct two of the greatest athletes to ever wear the purple (not Ravens). I found this cool, and they said we get to announce it.

So…

When? If you're not otherwise tied up on Friday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m…

What? …then come see Jim and John Harbaugh inducted into the Pioneer Hall of Fame. There will be a dinner, VIP pre-party, and some gift bags to serve as the fundraiser.

Fundraiser? This costs money? That's kinda the point: this is how they annually raise money for the Pioneer teams. If you would like to trade money for meeting Jim and John Harbaugh (and, like, us), then you can do that beforehand. Hold on I got a flier for this:

920661_492068587640362_2848411962979606707_o

There. Click that and you'll get to the Facebook page. There will be information updates there as the rest of this comes together.

Is there a basketball game then? We're probably good. There's a sliiiight chance that Michigan will be in the Big Ten tournament's 6:30 game. I say "slight" with extra-i's because M would have to be either the #10, #7, or #2 seed.

But I'm a Huron alum! Then come wearing a #17 River Rats jersey.

How about gratuitous photos of Young Harbaughs? Don't mind if I do.
