As always, if you can point me to an article covering any of the commits' games. Do so in the comments. We were unable to make it out to any games ourselves last week, but may be able to drop in on a couple this week.

If you can help out finding articles on any of the commits, we'll try to make it as comprehensive as possible.

SC QB Cornelius Jones

The great name confusion of 2009 has ended by the way, as we now have pseudo-confirmation of the lack of "r" in Jones's first name.

Last week: Spartanburg falls to Sumter 34-21. Article 2. MGoUser Clarence Beeks gives yet another awesome breakdown of Jones's performance. Conelius threw 17/27 for 187 yards with a touchdown and a pick, while running 23 times for 53 yards and another score.

Conelius Jones continues to impress me with his arm, decision-making, and excellent play-action skills. As I've said consistently now, Jones is not all that fast (he's not slow, but he's more quick and shifty than fast), but what has become obvious is that this kid really has the potential to develop as a passer. He shows good presence in the pocket and makes good decisions with where to go with the ball (usually). However, he does tend to bail out and run sooner than he should sometimes, which indicates that he's not processing multiple reads consistently.

I highly recommend checking out the full text of Beeks's breakdown.

This week: Greenwood @ Spartanburg (2-2).

LA Slot WR Drew Dileo

Last week: Parkview Baptist takes down Arcadiana 31-14.

He was also an efficient 4-of-6, throwing for 59 yards, including a 35-yard toss to tailback Drew Dileo with 7:24 left for the Eagles' final score.

Something about that QB's stats screams "wishbone offense," though I guess we already knew that. Drew had 14 carries for 77 yards to go along with the receiving TD.

This week: Parkview Baptist (2-0) @ Church Point.

MI WR Ricardo Miller

Fluff from ESPN.

Last week: Pioneer defeats Saline 36-17. MGoUser ArborBlue provided a game report. Ricardo had 3 catches for 48 yards and a (24-yard) touchdown. He also misjudged a wide open pass that should have been a 60-yard TD. For the record, Saline QB (and MSU commit) Joe Boisture was so horrible he got benched during the game. Miller photo appears courtesy of Lon Horwedel for AnnArbor.com.

OH WR Jerald Robinson

Last week: Canton South picks up their first win by taking down Ravenna, 28-19.

Two plays later, Canton South’s Jerald Robinson caught a Logan Bowles pass for a 54-yard touchdown and a 14-13 lead.

I believe that it Jerald's first touchdown on the year.

This week: Louisville @ Canton South (1-2).

MI WR Jeremy Jackson

Last week: Huron falls to Temperance Bedford 28-21.

This week: Huron (1-2) @ Monroe.

This week: Avon Lake (1-2) @ Olmstead.

OH DT Terry Talbott

Last week: Wayne falls to Glenville 57-28. Neither Talbott brother is mentioned in the game recap.

This week: Huber Heights (2-1) @ Trotwood-Madison.

PA DE Ken Wilkins

Last week: Trinity falls to Greensburg Salem 10-7. Recap article. The Trinity defense was very stout, save for a pass interference penalty in the endzone that ended up providing the deciding points on a QB sneak.

This week: Trinity (0-2) @ Thomas Jefferson.

PA DE Jordan Paskorz

Last week: Hampton falls to West Allegheny, 26-7.

This week: Hampton @ Shaler Area.

OH LB Antonio Kinard

Last week: The Leopards fall to Campbell, 14-6.

“We made a lot of mistakes,” said Whittaker. “Twice we turned the ball over inside the 20 and we had one TD called back [Antonio Kinard’s 38-yard pass interception in the early seconds of the game]. We blew three opportunities.”

This week: Struthers @ Liberty (2-1).

FL S Marvin Robinson

Last week: Lake Region is knocked off by Kathleen, 33-0.

This week: Sebring @ Lake Region.

OH CB Courtney Avery

Last week: Lexington falls to North Canton Hoover, 41-20. Avery was held to only 16 yards passing in the second half.

This week: Rice Consolidated @ Lexington.

OH CB Terrence Talbott

Last week: Wayne falls to Glenville 57-28. Neither Talbott brother is mentioned in the game recap.

This week: Huber Heights (2-1) @ Trotwood-Madison.

2011 OH CB Greg Brown

Prior to this week's game, Brown had 5 catches for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Last week: Fremont Ross knocks off rival Tiffin Columbian 49-35. I highly recommend checking out that article, because it's heavily Brown-centric.

Brown caught touchdown passes of 39 and 29 yards while finishing with three grabs for 98 yards... "Greg is so versatile that he can hurt an opposing team in so many different ways and we're going to take advantage of that," Fremont Ross coach Derek Kidwell said... "I feel like I always have to step up," said Brown, who has verbally committed to attend Michigan in fall 2010 [sic]. "If I step up, then there's a good chance we're going to win."... Brown gave Ross a 64-yard kickoff return...

Second article that's not so Brown-y.This week: Cleveland Benedictine @ Fremont Ross (2-1).

MI QB Devin Gardner

If you can help out finding articles on any of the commits, we'll try to make it as comprehensive as possible. We were only able to make it to 1 high school game this week (sorry to spoil you last week with 4 games), so that's listed at the top. In future weeks, the 2011 commits (of which there are currently 1) will be included as well.

MI RB Austin White

Last week: Stevenson lost to Howell 14-28. Austin rushed 16 times for 119 yards and 2 TD (12.44 YPC). He also caught 4 passes for 59 yards, and had a 53-yard touchdown grab erased due to penalty. Paul and I were there, so experience the glory of HD:

In all honesty, if Stevenson's coaches would have just given Austin the ball more (and you can't argue with his production), the Spartans would have had a much better chance to come away with a win.

This week: Stevenson (0-2) at Salem.

MI QB Devin Gardner

Last week: Game preview. Inkster lost to East Kentwood 52-33. From the sounds of it, Gardner's receivers did him no favors:

On two occasions in the first half, Gardner heaved up nice touch passes to the end zone only to see the ball slip through teammates fingertips and fall harmlessly to the turf.

Devin finished 19-30 passing for 389(!) yards. He also had a 66-yard rushing touchdown on the game's first play, and finished with 10 rushes for 102 yards with another touchdown (2 total).

This week: Inkster (0-2) has the week off.

Last week: Was expected to have a breakout performance. The vikings beat Northwestern 20-10.

Conelius Jones ran for 45 yards and a touchdown and threw for 125 yards and another score as Spartanburg traveled to Northwestern and knocked off the Trojans 20-10 Friday night.

No word on attempts.

MI WR Jeremy Jackson

Last week: Huron defeated Tecumseh 41-14. Jeremy had an interception for the Rats, but no receptions.
This week: Huron (1-1) @ Temperance Bedford.

OH WR DJ Williamson

Last week: Harding rocked Youngstown Chaney, 58-0.
This week: Harding (1-0-1) v. Akron Buchtel on Saturday evening.

OH OL Christian Pace

Last week: Avon Lake fell to Brunswick 7-24.
This week: Avon Lake (0-2) v. Elyria.

OH DT Terry Talbott

Last week: Wayne defeated Canton McKinley 27-14. There's no specific mention of Talbott, but the defense performed well:

Four big plays — including one on defense — catapulted the Warriors to a 27-14 victory over Canton McKinley...
Wayne’s defense unleashed a “trifecta” — sack, fumble and TD — as the Warriors forced four turnovers and improved to 2-0

After seeing how dominant he can be a week ago, I would be shocked if Terry wasn't directly responsible for some of that defensive wizardry.
This week: Huber Heights (2-0) v. Glenville on Saturday evening. This should be a hell of a game. I'd recommend checking it out, if you're in the area.

PA DE Ken Wilkins

Last week: Trinity falls 22-36 to powerhouse Canon-McMillan.
This week: Trinity (0-1) @ Greensburg Salem.

PA DE Jordan Paskorz

Last week: Hampton defeated Blackhawk 21-13.
This week: Hampton (1-0) v. West Allegheny.

OH LB Antonio Kinard

Last week: Liberty beats Niles 29-12. Kinard caught a 24-yard touchdown pass, and also came in for some praise from his coach:

Whittaker said Gutierrez and Michigan recruit Antonio Kinard are the heart of his defense.
“They were all-conference linebackers last year,” he said. “We’ve come to kind of expect them to make those types of impact plays and they have made many.”

This week: Liberty (2-0) @ Campbell.

FL S Marvin Robinson

Last week: Lake Region lost 0-9 to Winter Haven. Marvin had 20 tackles(!), in addition to a forced fumble and an interception. 43 yards on 8 carries (5.38 YPC).
This week: Lake Region (0-1) v. Kathleen.

OH CB Courtney Averyaveryshelby.jpg

Last week: Game preview. Lexington destroyed Shelby 42-6.

Senior QB Courtney Avery broke a couple of tackles and burst up the middle on a 54-yard TD run less than three minutes later.

Avery finished the game 14-26 passing for 202 yards, and he ran for 40 yards on 7 carries.
This week: Lexington @ Cameron.

OH CB Terrence Talbott

Last week: Wayne defeated Canton McKinley 27-14. There's no specific mention of (either) Talbott, but the defense performed well. See above for details.
This week: Huber Heights (2-0) v. Glenville on Saturday evening. This should be a hell of a game. I'd recommend checking it out, if you're in the area.

Friday Night Lights 2009: 9-1

Submitted by Tim on September 1st, 2009 at 10:16 AM

Huge week for the Friday Night Lights feature, as nearly every Michigan commit kicked off the season this weekend, and Mgoblog was live and in person for four of the games (covering 6 of the commits). Players with MGoOriginal content will be at the top, and guys who haven't hit the field yet are towards the bottom. Without further ado, Friday Night Lights:

MI QB Devin Gardnergardnerrynearson.JPG

Last Week: Game Preview. Ann Arbor.com fluff. Inkster loses to Ann Arbor Pioneer 32-35. Article #2. Devin threw 10/14 for 97 yards and a touchdown, while running 16 times for 113 yards and a touchdown. See the MGoBlog review of Gardner, including a photo gallery and HD video.
This week: Inkster (0-1) @ East Kentwood on Thursday. MGoBlog might be in atendance. Hell, let's take a vote. Would you rather have more Devin video or some Austin White video from this coming Thursday?

MI WR Ricardo Miller

Last Week: Game Preview. Ann Arbor Pioneer defeats Inkster 35-32. Article #2. Ricardo caught 3 passes for 70 yards. Photo gallery and scouting report never really got published, because there was actually too much(!) content for MGoBlog to handle this weekend, so you'll have to suffer through the MgoHighlights:

This Week: Dexter @ Ann Arbor Pioneer (1-0). MGoBlog will either be at this game, or the Huron/Tecumseh game. Leave your preference in the comments.

OH WR Jerald Robinson

Last Week: Canton South fell to Dover 14-27. Jerald caught 2 passes for 6 yards, returned one kickoff for 15 yards, and made 1 solo tackle and 6 assisted tackles. See the MGoBlog report from the game, including video.
This Week: Canton South (0-1) @ Canfield.

MI WR/TE Jeremy Jackson

Last Week: Ann Arbor Huron fell to Chelsea 35-29. Jeremy had 6 receptions for 86 yards, including a 48-yarder. He also added 3 tackles and 6 assisted tackles from his free safety spot (where he actually looked pretty good, at least at the high school level). Original MGoHighlights:

This Week: Tecumseh @ Ann Arbor Huron (0-1). MGoBlog will either be at this game, or the Pioneer/Dexter game. Leave your preference in the comments.

OH DT Terry Talbott

Last Week: Wayne defeats Cincinnati Princeton 21-4. MGoBlog was there, and you can see the photos here:

We're still having a slight delay on the HD video, but it will be posted when available. Terry finished with 8.5 tackles, 4.5 for loss (18 yards). He also had 1.5 sacks (11 yards) and 2 QB hurries.
This Week: Huber Heights Wayne (1-0) @ Canton McKinley on Saturday.

OH CB Terrence Talbott

Last Week: Wayne defeats Cincinnati Princeton 21-4. MGoBlog was there, and you can see the photo gallery above.
This Week: Huber Heights Wayne @ Canton McKinley.

SC QB Cornelius Jones

Last Week: Spartanburg defeats Union 35-0.

"Jones ran for touchdowns of 3, 1 and 3 yards and completed 6 of 7 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown."

“He’s a very athletic quarterback and you have to give Spartanburg credit, they just took it to us,” Union County coach David Lipsey said.

As with last week, Clarence Beeks gives us the dish.

This Week: Spartanburg (1-1) @ Northwestern.

MI RB Austin White

Last Week: Stevenson falls to crosstown rival Franklin 7-21. Austin has 14 carries for 64 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown for the Spartans' only points. Rivals has video of White's performance. Be forewarned, though - it caused my browser to lock up once.
This Week: Howell @ Livonia Stevenson (0-1) on Thursday. Leave comments on whether you'd rather have MGoBlog at this game, or Devin's game in Grand Rapids on Thursday.

TX RB Stephen Hopkins

Last Week: Marcus pounded Grapevine 62-28. Boxscore. Hopkins had 13 carries for 78 yards and touchdowns of 4 and 6 yards.
This Week: Plano West @ Marcus (1-0).

OH WR/S DJ Williamson

Last Week: Harding tied Shaw 24-24. Second article. No mention of Williamson in either paper.
This Week: Chaney @ Warren G. Harding (0-0-1).

Last Week: Season preview fluff. Avon Lake upset 28-16.
This Week: Avon Lake (0-1) @ Brunswick

Last Week: Liberty defeats East 17-6.
This Week: Niles @ Liberty (1-0).

OH CB Courtney Avery

Last Week: Lexington led 7-3 when the game was suspended due to weather:

When the game was suspended, Avery was 6 of 7 passing for 91 yards with one TD and one interception.

Once the game resumed, he picked up where he left off, leading to a 42-17 victory.:

The Minutemen had big plays throughout the game as Avery connected on 18 of 28 passes for 278 yards and three TDs, including scoring connections to Kenya Coombs (53 yards), Brian Byrne (28 yards) and Kevin Smith (3 yards).

The touchdown was a 53-yarder.
This Week: Mart @ Lexington (1-0).

TX RB Tony Drake

Last Week: Skyline's season doesn't open up until this Friday.
This Week: Kimball @ Skyline.

LA Slot WR Drew Dileo

Last Week: Dileo's season doesn't start until the 11th.
This Week: Dileo's season doesn't start until the 11th.

PA DE Ken Wilkins

Last Week: Season preview fluff. Individual preseason fluff:

"He's an unbelievable physical talent," Trinity coach Ed Dalton said. "He's very muscular, and he has a 28-inch waist. He looks like an NFL player today. He's not going to take a year in college to get that physical look. He already has it. He's blessed physically."

...

"[Committing early to Michigan] was a relief off my shoulders," Wilkins said. "I found out where I wanted to go, and there was no point in letting the pressure build up. It was a good position to be in to be wanted by all those schools, but I wanted to do what was best for me."

Trinity's regular season has not started yet.
This Week: Canon-McMillian @ Trinity.

PA DE Jordan Paskorz

Last Week: Season preview fluff. Individual preseason fluff:

A hybrid defensive end/linebacker, Paskorz has carved a reputation as one of the WPIAL's elite players. Various blog writers question how elite...

"Everyone is entitled to their own wrong opinions," DeMatteo said. "Honestly, I can only base mine from working with the kid, but it's hard to find a player of his caliber. He worked hard, he devoted time early in the morning and he didn't miss workouts [ed - too soon?]. Jordan has been a quiet leader, and at least to me, he's exemplified what a Division I player should be."

What isn't questioned is Paskorz's athleticism. His muscular frame -- and the potential to add more bulk -- is evident. He runs a 40-yard dash in about 4.7 seconds and can dunk a basketball from a standing position. Paskorz, who also plays tight end, had nine sacks for a Talbots squad that struggled to a 1-8 finish in 2008.

This Week: Hampton @ Blackhawk

FL S Marvin Robinson

Last Week: Season preview fluff:

Anchoring that secondary will be senior safety Marvin Robinson, who Reynolds called "one of the best players in the school's history."

The article goes on to mention that he is being recruited by schools like Ohio State and Michigan. OK, but which one has he committed to, moron?

This Week: Lake Region @ Winter Haven.

The high school football season is officially underway. Only one of Michigan's commits (Cornelius Jones) has played in an official game thus far, but there have been several scrimmages that are at least worthwhile to mention, and lots of season previewin' has been going down. If you run across a game article on any of these guys, make sure you drop it in the comments.

Last year at my old digs, I chronicled the weekly performances of Michigan commits in their final season of high school ball. That feature, Friday Night Lights, will make the move with me to MGoBlog. High school football news is not always so easy to come by, even in today's internet-centric world, so let me know if you have any additional information for any installment of the series.

MI QB Devin Gardner

By all accounts, Gardner is poised for a monstrous senior season. He's worked hard over the offseason on improving his ability to throw the ball, his conditioning should be at a peak, and his Inkster Vikings are expected to be one of the best teams in the state of Michigan.

There are a couple things that could hold him back: The Vikings play every single game on the road, including a couple trips to the Cleveland area, and another to Steubenville, Ohio (damn near in West Virginia). He also lost his #1 target from last year in current Wolverine Cameron Gordon. Still, look for excellent numbers from Devin in this space.

SC QB Cornelius Jones

Jones's season last year went poorly, as did his team's. However, Spartanburg should be one of the most improved in the area, and Jones will try to put up better numbers. In his second year under the current coaching staff, and Cornelius's second playing high school football, there's nowhere to go but up.

Hopkins, named one of the best players in the Dallas area, will try to build on a solid junior season and show that he is an elite player. However, he may make more of an impact defensively than carrying the rock.

MI RB Austin White

White put up pretty good numbers last year, as he led Stevenson to the state semifinals before bowing out to eventual champion Rockford. The only thing that prevented him from getting ridiculous stats was a ton of blowouts. The Spartans should be a pretty strong team again, and White should have the opportunity to continue mixing long runs with steady production on the ground. Look for him to potentially flex out as a receiver more often this year, and hopefully contribute on defense.

Jackson's Huron River Rats are making the transition to a triple-option offense, which doesn't bode well for his receiving numbers. He is also changing positions (probably to tight end), so it remains to be seen what kind of statistics Jeremy will produce in '09.
