Friday Night Lights Roadtrip: Inkster @ Southgate

Friday Night Lights Roadtrip: Inkster @ Southgate

Submitted by Tim on November 16th, 2009 at 4:38 PM

The MGoCreeper van headed to Southgate this weekend for its latest excursion, to see Devin Gardner and the Inkster Vikings take on the Titans of Southgate Anderson. Inkster walked away with a 35-7 victory, behind yet another stellar performance from Gardner:

Gardner finished the night with 74 yards rushing on 11 carries. He also passed for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns on an 11/19 performance.

This was not Devin at his most impressive, but it was still enough to blow out a team in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. A couple of the rushes he had were sacks that came on bad snaps where he had no chance to react, and some of the passes were catchable balls that the receivers weren't able to come down with. Still, it's clear that Devin is the best athlete on the field regardless of who steps onto it, and he's also been the better quarterback every time we've seen him play.

Inkster next takes on Warren De La Salle at 1PM on Saturday at Ferndale High School. Alas, we shall not be there, because there's some college football game going on at the time or something. If the Vikings win, they'll be in the State Finals.

New Commit LA S Carvin Johnson

Last week: Rummel knocks off Shaw 18-17.

Breaud was terrific, taking many huge hits, particularly from a human missile named Carvin Johnson and by linebacker Chris Randle. Johnson, who earlier this week committed to Michigan, returned a punt 69-yards for a score on a brilliant effort but the play was called back for a block in the back by Rummel.

This week: Rummel (10-0) v. Captain Shreve in Round 1 of the State Playoffs.

MI QB Devin Gardner

Last week: Inkster defeats Redford Thurston 50-28 in Round 2 of the State Playoffs. Article 2.

Gardner was 6-of-11 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran 11 times for 120 yards and three more touchdowns.

"He played one of the better games of the year for me," Inkster coach Greg Carter said. "He took the game over. Every time Redford Thurston (8-3) would score, he would lead the team down to answer."

Paul was there (albeit a little late), so enjoy some video from the second quarter on:

CityBallers was also there, and they provide video as well.

This week: Inkster (7-3) @ Southgate Anderson in Round 3 of the State Playoffs.

MI RB Austin White

Last week: Stevenson falls to Detroit Catholic Central 0-38.

Senior Austin White, who has committed to play at the University of Michigan next season, finished the game with 75 yards on 10 carries for the Spartans, but was unable to use his speed to break a big run against the very solid Shamrocks defense.

...except for a 30-yarder, which I would call "big." I was there, so enjoy some video:

As you can see, Stevenson employed some direct-snap shotgun stuff for White, including throwing a pass. I hadn't seen them use that before this year, and I wonder if this was its debut. If so, I question the logic of installing something completely new for a big playoff game. I also question the logic of only giving your running back the ball 10 times when he averages 7.5 yards each carry, but whateva.

TX RB Stephen Hopkins

Last week: Game preview:

Give me Marcus RB Stephen Hopkins to not want his spectacular career to come to an end just quite yet and a Marcus win. Prediction: Marcus 27, Hebron 23.

In reality, Marcus pounds out a 35-28 win over Hebron. Hopkins ran 28 times for 171 yards and touchdowns of 37 ad 22 yards. Article 2:

Marcus running back Stephen Hopkins, who entered the game needing 44 yards to set the school’s all-time rushing record, gained 171 yards with two touchdowns

“We’ve had a great offensive line since I have been here,” Hopkins said. “And coach Erwin always believed in me. Thanks to all of them I was able to get that done.”

“It was all guts,” Hopkins said. “We picked the right time to show it and I’m proud of the team for how we fought and won. We have to keep fighting and keep getting better every week,” Hopkins said. “We have to step it up on offense and on defense and we have a chance.”

LA Slot WR Drew Dileo

Last week: Game preview:

“I love playing at The Rock,” said Dileo, a Michigan football commitment who has scored 11 touchdowns this season. “The atmosphere is great. It’ll be a packed house and we’re playing for the district championship. It’s a great honor to be in this rivalry.”

More pregame fluff. Parkview beats rival Redemptorist 44-27.

It looked like the Wolves had Parkview stopped, but on fourth-and-3 at the PBS 47 the Eagles executed a fake punt, with Dileo running 24 yards for a first down.

Three plays later, Dileo scored on an option pitch around left end. Scott’s second PAT made it 17-7 with 9:39 left in the half.

Dileo later had a 41-yard punt return.

A 23-yard Wilson to Dileo pass helped key the drive that ended with a 2-yard TD run by Brandon Johnson.

As you can see, his first 4 pass attempts were completed. Add to that the fact that 2 of the incompletions were Hail Marys and one was a perfect fade to a receiver whose toe was on the line, and you have a pretty good passing day.

Last week: Spartanburg falls to Boiling Springs 35-39.

the Vikings marched down inside the Boiling Springs 30-yard line in the final minutes, but a fourth-down run by quarterback Conelius Jones, another Shrine Bowl pick, was stopped short

For Spartanburg, Jones ran for 77 yards and a touchdown and threw for a score to Alton Miller.

And what is this "Shrine Bowl" you speak of? It's the North v. South Carolina High School All-Star game. Jones was selected to play as a wide receiver. Interesting quote from the article:

Last week: Game preview. Parkview Baptist beats Baker 35-0.

Senior Drew Dileo scored on a 19-yard run with 9:16 remaining in the third quarter. Dileo passed to Johnson for two points and the final scoring of the game.

Dileo added 36 yards rushing on five tries.

This was a "pull the starters" type of game in bad weather, which partially explains the pedestrian stats.

This week: Parkview Baptist (7-1) @ Redemptorist on Thursday.

MI WR Ricardo Millermillerbedford.jpg

Last week: Pregame fluff. Pioneer bests Temperance Bedford 28-7 in Round 1 of the State Playoffs. MLive article.

Then midway through the final quarter Sorise capped a five-play drive with a 22-yard pass that bounced off a Bedford defender into the hands of Pioneer's Ricardo Miller for a TD...

Miller, who has verbally committed to play at Michigan, caught five passes for 70 yards after making just two catches for 16 yards in the first contest.

"We had to play a lot more Cover 3 because they went to a tight-end set with Ricardo Miller in the middle," Wood explained. "You can't let Miller run free down the seam, so we had to bring the safety over the top."

Big game for Miller, especially considering the inaccuracy by the Pioneer QB. Also, hooray for filling in stats for a game that had previously been blank on his season-long chart. Miller photo by Lon Horwedel of AnnArbor.com.

FL S Marvin Robinson

Last week: Lake Region loses to Jenkins 7-34.

The Thunder are playing without starting quarterback Tavaris Carr and Division I prospect safety Marvin Robinson because of injury.

Word on the street is that Robinson might be able to play injured, but with his team doing so poorly, he doesn't want to jeopardize spring practice at Michigan by re-aggravating it.

This week: Lake Region (0-7) @ Bartow.

OH CB Courtney Avery

Last week: Game preview. Lexington falls to Ashland 28-31.

The loss tempered a career night by Avery, who has battled injuries all season. The Michigan-bound senior completed 32 of 42 passes for 313 yards and two TDs and rushed for a score.

“Courtney is a player,” said [opposing coach] Valentine. “There’s a reason everyone was behind him and he goes to Michigan. I look forward to seeing him play on Saturdays.”

MI QB Devin Gardner

Last week: Inkster defeats Steubenville 36-29. It snapped a multi-year regular season win streak for the Big Red.

Inkster's season seemed over when Steubenville took a 29-28 lead with 1:19 left to play, but Michigan-commitment Devin Gardner completed a 63-yard bomb to Vorheese Zanders with 39 seconds left.

Gardner completed 14 of 25 passes for 275 yards and four TDs. He also ran 11 times for 55 yards and a score.

This local article provides much more detail on the gameplay itself. Video highlights from the local news. Also, this mgoboard thread was pretty epic while the game was in progress.

FNL: AA Pioneer @ Chelsea

FNL: AA Pioneer @ Chelsea

Submitted by Tim on October 19th, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Last Friday, I got my third opportunity to check out 2010 Michigan commit Ricardo Miller in person, as the Ann Arbor Pioneer Pioneers (we're from Pioneer!) traveled to Chelsea to take on Michigan State commit Nick Hill and the Chelsea Bulldogs. Ricardo Miller caught 4 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in a 45-9 Pioneer victory.

First, since it's what everyone cares about the most, the video:

Ricardo Miller Scouting Report

This was the first time I'd seen Miller look truly dominant against high school competition, though he's looked semi-dominant before, he just never gets the damn ball. His quarterback doesn't have the confidence in his own arm to hit Miller on the always-wide-open deep posts (or deep crosses - look how open he is nearly every time he runs a route, but the QB is too scared to throw it), otherwise Miller would have finished with 200+ receiving yards in every single game of his I've attended.

Ricardo Miller

In this game, the QB managed to hit him on a couple screens. Those play more to the QB's strengths than Ricardo's, but the coaching staff has struggled to find ways to get the ball into his hands, and a screen is better than nothing. Miller also caught a quick slant at the end of the first half, then outran the Chelsea defense down to the 8-yard line before two deep defenders managed to drag him down as the second quarter expired. In the third quarter, Miller got behind the defense and the QB finally hit Miller for his second 53-yard catch of the game. This one was a touchdown (above, courtesy of AnnArbor.com's Lon Horwedel). Miller was also targeted a couple times on poor throws that suggested why the QB rarely throws it long.

This game, however, was not Ricardo's best blocking performance. He's usually performed very well, sometimes even dominating against defensive linemen as a tight end. This game, he was just OK. He got a Pioneer running back killed when he whiffed a block on the perimeter.

Nick Hill Scouting Report

On the other side of the ball, the pride of the Chelsea Bulldogs was Nick Hill. Unfortunately, I was running low on memory and I didn't shoot any video of him. However, in my estimation (and please note that I am not a professional) Hill didn't impress. He looks like a guy that would go to a MAC program, where he would become a star... against MAC defenses. It's easy to see why the Michigan coaches didn't offer. I think that Mark Dantonio offered him because he wants a bunch of guys on his team who are pissed at Michigan, in hopes that they Hulk Up and perform like beasts against the Wolverines each season.

For someone who is often compared to Mike Hart, the first thing that jumps out about Nick Hill is his fumbling. He fumbled three times in the game, losing two of them. He also dropped two passes, one of which should have been ruled a lateral and a 3rd lost fumble. Hill didn't seem spectacular running the ball, either. Once he got in a groove, he showed some of the jump-cuts in traffic that led to the Hart comparisons, but he's not a tough runner, and goes down on first contact almost every time. His only big play was being the recipient of a pitch on a hook-and-ladder play that he ran in for a touchdown with nobody from Pioneer threatening to come near him. Hill got hurt and missed the entire second half, and I honestly didn't think his backup (random white kid who will never sniff a D-1 offer) was all that significant of a downgrade.

Last week: Pioneer scrapes by Huron 23-19.

Sorise began moving the Pioneers down the field. And after connecting with Miller once once previously in the night, Sorise found a wide-open Miller for a 39-yard reception down to the Huron 5-yard line.

"That was the changing moment in the game," Sorise said. "(Miller) told me if he beat the (defensive back), just to throw it up, throw it deep."

Miller, playing in his first Pioneer-Huron clash, did the rest.

"I told Miles I would go out and get it," Miller said. "I went out and made a play."

Miller's catch left Pioneer only 5 yards from the go-ahead touchdown.

MI RB Austin White

Last week: Stevenson defeats Novi 14-7. White did fumble the ball once. Article 2.

The Spartans had 222 yards rushing led by White’s 133 on 28 carries.

White also had 3 catches for 34 yards in the game.

Article 3:

“As long as we keep winning I don’t care how many times I carry the ball,” White said. “The team is working hard. To be around these guys is a great feeling. We’ve come such a long way since the beginning of the season. It’s exciting right now. We didn’t change a lot in the second half. People just started making plays. We’ve been focusing on making plays. I think we’re going to be the kind of team to pound it down their throats. That’s the kind of team we’re developing into.”

This week: Stevenson (4-2) @ South Lyon East.

MI WR Jeremy Jackson

Last week: Huron defeats Saline 32-20.jjacksaline.jpg

Gleichert directed the credit to his blockers, saying "our offensive line just played the best games of their lives. I'm going to give all credit to the O-line. They played an amazing game."

Senior wide receiver Jeremy Jackson, who caught eight passes for 132 yards and a touchdown, agreed.

"When the line blocks, everything goes well for us. They're firing off the ball real hard and on each and every play they're coming off with a purpose," he said.

"That makes the run and pass really easy."

If you can help out finding articles on any of the commits, e-mail me, and I'll try to include your contribution. This week, I made it to two games, and they're listed at the top. If you want up-to-the-minute updates of the games I attend, follow me on Twitter @varsityblue. Michigan received a commitment from Will Hagerup over the weekend, and I'll try to catch up with his season in the next edition of FNL.

South made plays first. Bowles, in South’s second possession, found Jerald Robinson over the middle and the 6-2 speedster did the rest.

Last week: Lake Region falls to Sebring 21-29. Marvin starred for the Thunder on both offense and defense:

Led by linebacker Luke Lehning, tackle Matt Wells and safety Marvin Robinson, the Thunder defense took nearly everything out of Sebring's offense except Clarke, holding the Blue Streaks to just 20 rushing yards on their first 20 carries...

On the first play from scrimmage after Clark's 40-yard TD, Robinson burst through the Sebring secondary, took a pass from Carr in full stride and sprinted to a 64-yard touchdown.

This week: Lake Region (0-3) @ Haines City.

OH CB Courtney Avery

Last week: Lexington falls to Orrville 21-41. Avery injured his ankle in the game, and only got limited time.

Not having Jefferson (6 carries, 69 yards; 2 receptions) and Avery (13-of-22 passing, 133 yards) was a factor.

It remains to be seen whether the injury will keep Avery out of any games in the near future.
