OT - 2018 World Cup Storylines

With the World Cup only one week away, I thought it would be a good time to bring up some storylines that the casual soccer fan might enjoy keeping track of since our own national team will not be attending.  Obviously, there are more than what I will post here, so feel free to add on in the comments if you think of other ones!

To launch the new site we have to freeze content on this one and download it all. The site will still work today as normal but anything posted from now until the swap--comments, posts, whatever, is going to go away. If you're working on a big diary or something, save it for after launch.

NOTE: If you get yourself banned today that's going to hurt. All rules still in effect.

See you again on 3.0

OT: Chrysler getting axed?

OT: Chrysler getting axed?

Submitted by SteelCityMafia on May 31st, 2018 at 11:48 PM

With the FIAT-Chrysler news conference Friday morning at 3am Eastern, the company is prepared to release their new five-year plan. Chrysler, the halo brand of the American portion of FCAU, is rumored to be on the chopping block with the nameplate getting shuttered altogether. This would just leave Dodge, Jeep, and Ram as the lone brands remaining, with Jeep and Ram both being part of rumors to be sold off to various investors over the last five years or so. Additionally, Fiat is pulling out of the US market.

As a big MOPAR fan who has family ties to Chrysler this stings quite a bit, and I am hoping it does not preceed a sell-off of the Jeep/Ram duo and the closing of the Dodge brand. Dodge especially makes very cool cars and I wish for a successful future for the company.

OT: Zidane steps down from Real Madrid

OT: Zidane steps down from Real Madrid

So.... that was unexpected. In the greatest coaching mic drop we have seen in some time, Zinedine Zidane, known to most casual soccer fans for the head butt that got him a red card in the 2006 World Cup final, has resigned as manager of Real Madrid, just a few days after they won their third consecutive Champions League. He was only at the helm for three years, making his trophy case that much more impressive. Can't think of a recent American sports equivalent, though I hope my fellow mgobloggers can chime in.

2018-19 Women's Water Polo Record Predictions

2018-19 Women's Water Polo Record Predictions

Submitted by Fitz on May 31st, 2018 at 9:10 AM

As most everyone knows, the Women's Water Polo season is only 6 months away. Coming off last season's 32-9 record ended by a loss to Cal in the playoffs, it's about time for us to take a look forward. The team returns 2 of their top 3 scorers from last season. With no published schedule yet this is clearly a fruitless activity but what is everyone's prediction for the year? Mine is 35-6.

Started to get really, really frustrated with this dude. Loses to a guy that had to qualify as a lucky loser.

Mahut v Del Potro in the 3rd, split the first 2 sets.

Other American men:

Steve Johnson- 2nd round (will play JL Struff)

Isner- 2nd round (will play Zeballos)

Donaldson- 2nd round (will play Dimitrov)

Querrey- 2nd round (will play Simon)

That's it. That's all we got left for USA Men at the French.

As I write this, it's 3-0 USMNT v Bolivia in an utterly meaningless friendly. Two teams not playing in the World Cup this summer. USMNT doesn't even have a permanent coach.

But, fortunately, basically NONE of the old has-beens, weren't-that-good-anyway generation is playing right now.  They have put an entire team of up-and-comers out there.  Both 18 year olds have scored.  Pulisic at 19 is literally the leader of this team.  Oldest players on the pitch are like 25 and 27 for the US.

I can't remember a team like this for the US -- so much young, unproven talent, but, their resumes are remarkable.  Schalke, PSG, etc. etc.  One of those "...in four years...." group.  We really do have a cupboard full of 18-to-20 year olds who are poised to get in the mix, and the ceiling ought to be a lot higher than the past group of underachievers.

As long as MLS keeps their grubby paws off of most of these kids.

MgoGardeners, How Does Your Garden Grow + Adult Beverage Time

MgoGardeners, How Does Your Garden Grow + Adult Beverage Time

Mates,

It occurred to me that even for urban dwellers, having a garden is kind of a thing.  It also occurred that some of you might be really good at that, and a wealth of knowledge given all the smart-niks that are on the board.   With summer finally arriving up north its time for those things up here, and I'm curious about what you all are growing and how.

So the Questions are:

1.  What are you growing (yes, even if its medical marijuana) and how are you doing that?  You growing plants, flowers, vegetables, raised bed gardens, potted, irrigated, whatever, give some background on it.

2.   Been hot up here and been busy outside much of the day.  About to do the last of the chores for the day, and an adult beverage will soon follow.  What's in your cup?

Hoping you are enjoying a great holiday weekend,

XM

EDIT:  I knew there were some serious gardeners here.

Also, hello to ms. dudeness, whose head i am apparently renting out without payment.  getting better for you hopefully.
