OT - Quality of Big 10 Football as Expressed by Round 1 of Draft

Submitted by alum96 on April 26th, 2013 at 2:29 PM

I realize the sample size (1 round of 1 year of a draft) is tiny but reviewing the 1st round of last night's draft is pretty damning for Big 10 football.  The degradation of play overall has been pretty obvious on the football field lately even correcting for Michigan's fall under the RR era - i.e. last year Ohio barely squeaked by Indiana and the average Purdue Illinois Iowa Minnesota game has become a scary thing to watch.

We can talk about depth all we want but in terms of top end impact NFL players it was a very dour night, especially considering this draft is generally considered weak and the Big 10 could still now show up.  There was a grand total of 1 Big 10 player drafted - a lineman from Wisconsin second to last in the round.  That was matched by the MAC.  And whatever conference Houston is in.  Michigan has its own shutout streak of 1st rounders but there was nothing out there from the Ohios, Penn Staters, Nebraskas et al.  To put in perspective an average (underachieving?) Florida State team had 3 players alone drafted, North Carolina 2.

Some comparison

SEC - 12 players

PAC 10 - 4 players

BIG 12 - 3 players

ACC - 6 players

It's the middle of the offseason on a Friday so the board is slow. So let's help pass the time by trying to come up with the best puns for Moe Ways' name (or any other commit from this class). I'll start it off with a few:

Moe Way, Mo' problems for the defense.

He gives us Moe Ways to score.

The business school is hosting 21 current and former players starting today to help them prepare for business opportunities post their playing days - looks like Jason Avant will be in attendance as well.

Wish them the best!

Slow morning, so what did you think of the first round of the draft? What do you think of your team's pick(s)? My 3 favorite NFL teams are the Lions, Bengals, and Pats:

Lions - took Ezekiel Ansah 5th overall. I had never heard of him, but it sounds like he's got insane physical tools a lot of potential. I don't know enough about the guy to feel one way or another about him, but DE was a need.

Bengals - took Tyler Eifert 21st overall. While a good pick, I was a bit confused. It's like not the Bengals really NEEDED to take a tight end in the first round. But I think he'll fit in well, and the Bengals passing attack is going to be sick next year.

Patriots - traded their pick to Minnesota, so they have the 20th and 27th picks in the 2nd round. I'd like to think they will take Denard in the second round, especially since Kiper projects that they will take a WR with the 27th pick (he says Aaron Dobson, who is clearly inferior to Denard).

What are your thoughts?

In an effort to create a wonderful learning device for my young children, I am in the process of creating a Michigan Football alphabet book.  I enjoy Scott Van Pelt, and like him I tend to make lists and completely overlook somebody obvious.  While I am hoping to make connections to current and recent teams as well as some of the all-time greats, I also don't want to ignore great performers from before my time (football awareness ca. 1988).  I am attempting to use some first and last names to avoid some of the unfortunate letter overlaps (for example, D is for Desmond allows H to be for Harmon).  I would love you to spend some of the time you might ordinarily spend snarking to help my children grow up as fully elucidated as possible.  Of course, you can snark me instead if you want; it's Amurca, we're all free to make choices.

Thanks in advance.

To make this better, here's what I have.  Tell me where I'm wrong (in some places I'm using place fillers)

Avant, Braylon, Charles, Desmond, Elvis, Ford, Gardner, Harmon, I, Jansen, Kovacs, Lewan, Mike (Hart), Neinberg, Oosterbaan,  P, Quarterbacks, Reimersma, Sword, Tom, U, Victors, Woodley, Xavier, Yost, Zoltan.

Big Ten Presidents are voting this Sunday on proposed divisions, division names, and 9 game schedule for 2014. It also sounds like one school is thinking about trying  to ask for a change because they were unhappy with the new divisions--Rittenberg surmised that this school was Michigan State. Where's the threat?

Hat Eating Watch - April 2013

Maurice Ways is currently on Michigan's campus, and as noted in Thursday Recruiting, Brian has once again offered to eat his hat in defying the possibility of an incredulous event.  That event now being the believed forthcoming commitment of one Mr. Ways.

Sure this thread is likely to be short-lived, given his stated preference for Michigan.  Add in the recent visit to MSU, with its gray concrete and dull green stadium, Clockwork Orange scoreboards, and I'm-so-repulsed-I'm-reminded-why-I-so-love-Michigan effect on recruits, and a commitment is likely in the offing.  But damn it there's a chance.  Maybe Ways waits until tomorrow.  Maybe Hand, Peppers, McDowell, Marshall, Scott et al are calling so much he can't get through.  Maybe Hoke refuses to take any commitments today, because Hoke is an everyman, and like us he's wondered what a man consuming his own hat would look like.  Also interesting: what does the hat look like?

Maybe we get to see this idiom played out, just once in our lifetimes.  It's nearly 5:00 and the work day over.  Dinner awaits.
