Coaching Decision in Arizona Game

Coaching Decision in Arizona Game

Submitted by Ziff72 on September 5th, 2014 at 10:15 AM

I was curious what other people thought of a rather interesting coaching decision last night in the Arizona game.

Setup-

Zona is up 3.   They have the ball.  4th and 4 from the UTSA 30.   23 seconds left.

Options as I see it

a.  kick FG- go up 6  but risk block or fielp position with miss

b. regular punt- risk block but kill time and only gain 10 yds of field position

c. pooch punt- risk block but maybe get some field position

d. go for it conservative- less chance for screw up but probably won't make it

e. go for it aggressive- best chance to end game but open yourself up for disaster.

The time left made it interesting to me.   It wasn't a lot of time but just enough if they got the ball at the 30 to get in fg range with 2 or 3 plays.   A punt that rolled could kill some time but open up more variables.

In the end Zona went option d.  They ran up the middle and didn't get it.  I didn't like this strategy as it only killed 2 seconds.  UTSA got the ball but ran 2 horrible plays and the game ended, but I wasn't sure what I would do.  I liked going for it but I think I would have ran a play to the end zone or a wide run to kill more time.  A pooch punt seemed like another attractive option.

Give me your play.

M ranked among ND's rivalries, superlatives

M ranked among ND's rivalries, superlatives

A local South Bend news outlet recently released a poll where Notre Dame fans and alumni across the country voted on superlatives regarding the Irish's rivalries. I know, I know, who cares what Notre Dame fans think, right? But it is interesting to see where Michigan fits into all this.

LINK (The link I have apparently doesn't work, so I'll just transcribe the results):

Most Hated - Michigan
Most Anticipated - Michigan
Most Thrilling - Michigan
Most Frustrating - Michigan/USC (tie)
Most Heartbreaking - Michigan
Most Critical to the Season - Michigan
Most Enjoyed - Purdue/Navy (tie)
Most Prestigious - Michigan/Stanford (tie)
Most Irrelevant - Boston College
Most Satisfying Win - Michigan/USC (tie)

Rank the Rivalries in terms of Importance:

1. USC
2. Michigan
3. Navy
4. Michigan State
5. Stanford
6. Boston College
7. Purdue

Interesting to see that Michigan takes so many categories (hated, anticipated, thrilling) but is No. 2. Based on these results, you'd think Michigan would be No. 1 outright.

Yes, to hell with Notre Dame.

Forget 27 for 27, last night Tusculum (Division II) allowed -100 total yards and -124 rushing yards against the College of Faith. The College of Faith ran the ball 36 times for -3.4 yards per carry.

Tusculum won 71-0.

Ouch.

Interesting to see what happens with this story.  There had been a lot of speculation that if reinstated late this week that they would not play.  However Brian Kelly says the players have been working out well with the strength and conditioning coach and will in fact play on Saturday if cleared before the game.  If they are in fact innocent, I hope they play.

The fact that this is the last time in a WHILE that I will be able to do a wallpaper for this game is depressing.  I went with a vintage poster look, inspired by the official program from the 1942 game.  I hope you enjoy it - I am tired.  Goodnight!

I'm hoping this is ok to share. This is my first post so my images may not work or may be too large. I apologize in advance.

Sunday evening I was browsing eBay looking for cool Michigan items to display in my basement. One of the items I've been looking for is a seat from the stadium renovations that happened in the late 90's and early 00's. I've missed on a few of them but found a seller with a handful of them listed. Without reading too much of the description I messaged to ask the seller a question concerning missing items from the certification.

The seller got back to me quickly and answered my question while striking up a conversation based on my Pittsburgh related user id. Sending messages back and forth, I informed him although I love Pittsburgh pro sports I am a Michigan fan first and foremost. I also told him I fell in love with Ann Arbor when I made my first trip there. On that trip my brother donated a kidney to my Mom.

After a few more messages, and out of the blue, the seller told me he'd like to send me a seat free of charge from his Mom to my Mom. I was floored. I offered to at least pay shipping but he refused. After this, I also shared that my Mom was undergoing a mastectomy the following day to remove a cancerous lump. I also read more of the description and connected the dots the best I could. Seeing his signed his last message "M" I believed I was talking to Matt Schembechler, son of Millie and Bo.

2 days later, this arrived (accompanied with a note signed by Matt with best wishes to my family):

I'm hoping this was ok to share. I couldn't resist because it was one of the nicest things that could've happened to my family the night before surgery. My Mom really liked the story and couldn't believe he would do something so nice.

Thanks to the fine folks at Maize N Brew for providing the link to the maxpreps story. It's a great article that describes some things this young man has had to overcome, including a learning disability shared with his father. It's very much worth a read. You can either click here: http://www.maizenbrew.com/2014/9/4/6106841/michigan-football-recruiting… Or here: http://www.maxpreps.com/m/article.aspx?articleid=0d9837c3-908d-402e-937… Either way, you'll end up at maxpreps.

I know, I know. CFN. Consider the source, son!

But hey, they DID predict UM 52, App State 13 during Week 1, so there's that.

I think Michigan surprises everyone, improves from last week, and blows ND's house down in epic fashion thanks to Touchdown Neezus!

It won't even be that close.
