Per Zach Lowe: Wolverines in NYC FTW!!! Whether he gets the gig or not, glad to see head coaching buzz around Howard. Being an assistant for Sporlstra is a pretty solid way to learn high-level NBA coaching.

Rice Commission recommendations to be released today

Rice Commission recommendations to be released today

For those who aren't aware (like I wasn't until recently) Condoleeza Rice has been hired by the NCAA and Mark Emmert to provide long term "fixes" to college basketball. Their findings are supposed to be released today. Some of the expected changes include:

Ending One and done (although this is an NBA rule, not NCAA)

Changing summer league basketball by either disallowing coaches to attend shoe-sponsored camps, or the NCAA starting their own league.

Liberalizing agent rules: allowing players to have earlier contact with agents without having to declare for the draft.

Transparent apparel deals, mostly with coaches compensation.

Changing/removing "self-enforcement" of violations.

5 year post-season ban on violators for the 1st offense, as well as loss of all postseason revenue during the ban.

Baseball model is almost certanly not going to happen.

Emmert would like to begin implementing the recommended changes this year and has said that he intends to follow through with everything they suggest, so there could be really big changes to basketball soon.

Semi-relate article on the history of "student athletes" and where everything sits today. Really good article detailing the major legal cases that have brought us to where we are today.  Of note, The UNC issue, and how the NCAA couldn't go after UNC because fewer than half the students who took the fake classes weren't athletes, so it was a school issue, not an athletics issue.

Talks about the supreme court cases that have shaped college sports, including the coinage of the term student athlete, and another SC Justice who mandated that college athletes not be paid.  Good read if you haev the time or inclination.

Coach B w Andy Katz podcast

Coach B w Andy Katz podcast

Stumbled across this podcast today, Coach Beilein comes in after the 18 min mark. The man hasn't taken a break, hitting the recruiting trail right after the championship game. Also brings up the point that we won about 60 games the last 2 years and we're losing the top 6 players that helped us do so, 7 if Matthews leaves. Future is very bright, I hope we give the freshman time to adjust and learn the offense (and defense!) as they will certainly improve come March next year. Can't wait to see what our coach is able to do with all this young talent!…

The Detroit Mercy coaching search continues to wind all over the map...Would fit the "small, Catholic" school profile that Pitino is said to be looking for. However, UDM is an Adidas school so that would seem to create some conflicts.

Final 2018 Basketball COMPOSITE Rankings

Final 2018 Basketball COMPOSITE Rankings

As noted by a couple of users in the 247 rankings thread, the composite was updated this afternoon now that Rivals, ESPN, and 247 have all released their final 2018 rankings.  There are a couple of small changes from earlier today (and one large drop for Nunez):

Ignas Brazdeikis: 36th / 4-star

Brandon Johns: 65th / 4-star

David DeJulius: 98th / 4-star

Colin Castleton: 117th / 4-star

Adrien Nunez: 291st(!) / 3-star

Not sure what happened with the Nunez composite ranking - earlier today he was at 216.  Regarless, we end up with 1 Top 50 recruit and 3 total in the Top 100.  Four 4-star recruits and one 3-star recruit.

For those interested, Taylor Currie ended up at as a 3-star at 191. Also, Indiana still has a chance to bring the Big 10 it's lone Top 10 recruit if they can sign Romeo Langford (6th in the composite).  He would join Jalen Smith (14th in the composite / signed with Maryland) as the lone 5-star recruits in the B1G for 2018.
