Charles Matthews not invited to NBA Combine?

According to this list from Yahoo Sports, it appears that Charles Matthews didn't receive a combine invite, which goes against what was previously reported.

Obviously this bodes well for his chances of returning. Interestingly enough MSU's Nick Ward, IU's Juwan Morgan and Purdue's Carsen Edwards also didn't get invites, so they also will most likely be back

Who knows if either will end up happening, but it's the offseason so I thought it was interesting.

2019 5 star PG Tyrese Maxey has Michigan in final 5, announces May 9

So Michigan probably has a VERY VERY slim chance of landing him, BUT we are in his top 5 so can't rule it out all together.  Kentucky looks like the heavy favorite.

Maxey told Prep Circuit that all of his finalist schools have told him there is a scholarship available for him should he reclassify to 2018.

Thought that last quote was interesting because we do have an open spot for 18'.

Reaves is a 6'5" guard from Wichita State who shot 43% from 3 with about 4 attempts/game.

According to Arkansas Hoops on Twitter, Reaves had been contacted by the Wolverines shortly after announcing his intentions to transfer in April.

Reaves averaged 8.1 points per game in 21.5 minutes during the 2017-18 season. Mostly a bench player, he had started 11 games for the Shockers during the season.

Michigan will face George Washington and Providence will play South Carolina in the first round of the 2018 Hall-of-Fame Tip Off at Mohegan Sun, per a source.

South Carolina is already a scheduled home game for later in the year, so we could play them twice.

OT: Gores Wants SVG to Return

And... JEFF BOWER is the scapegoat, the guy who literally does nothing for the organization.

Gores and SVG have been meeting for two unecessarily long weeks, for no apparent reason, other than to find anyone except SVG to move.

http://www.mlive.com/pistons/index.ssf/2018/05/report_tom_gores_wants_s…

As a lifelong Piston fan, I am terrified what this means for the future. Gores does not look like he has a single idea what is happening with this organization, and neither does Stan. They are treading on some dangerous territory unelss this guy is not canned. The Pistons are tied to horrible contracts and do not have any form of plan in place other than remaining wildly medicore, and never picking in the lottery because they are not willing to embrace the proper way of rebuilding.

I am gutted about this. At least the Tigers are TRYING something, whether or not it works is another discussion. They have not won a single playoff game in a decade, which completely took me off my chair after I heard that.

Charles Matthews gets combine invite

Charles Matthews gets combine invite

Monday night it was revealed that Charles Matthews received an invite to the NBA Draft Combine. This is a big deal in terms of the odds of him leaving and getting drafted. Unlike the NFL combine, where scores of players who aren’t invited get drafted, virtually all Americans who are drafted have been invited to the combine. Around 70 players will participate. Last year, of the 67 invited, I could find only three who returned to school:

Hamidou Diallo
Justin Jackson
Moritz Wagner

EDIT: User Streetchemist below pointed out that I missed Svi Mykhailiuk from Kansas and Thomas Welsh from UCLA on this list. Go give him an upvote please.

Obviously most of us hope that Charles follows in Mo’s footsteps and pulls out of the draft despite his combine invite, but the odds of him leaving this year just significantly increased.

Rice Commission recommendations to be released today

Rice Commission recommendations to be released today

For those who aren't aware (like I wasn't until recently) Condoleeza Rice has been hired by the NCAA and Mark Emmert to provide long term "fixes" to college basketball. Their findings are supposed to be released today. Some of the expected changes include:

Ending One and done (although this is an NBA rule, not NCAA)

Changing summer league basketball by either disallowing coaches to attend shoe-sponsored camps, or the NCAA starting their own league.

Liberalizing agent rules: allowing players to have earlier contact with agents without having to declare for the draft.

Transparent apparel deals, mostly with coaches compensation.

Changing/removing "self-enforcement" of violations.

5 year post-season ban on violators for the 1st offense, as well as loss of all postseason revenue during the ban.

Baseball model is almost certanly not going to happen.

Emmert would like to begin implementing the recommended changes this year and has said that he intends to follow through with everything they suggest, so there could be really big changes to basketball soon.

Semi-relate article on the history of "student athletes" and where everything sits today. Really good article detailing the major legal cases that have brought us to where we are today.  Of note, The UNC issue, and how the NCAA couldn't go after UNC because fewer than half the students who took the fake classes weren't athletes, so it was a school issue, not an athletics issue.

Talks about the supreme court cases that have shaped college sports, including the coinage of the term student athlete, and another SC Justice who mandated that college athletes not be paid.  Good read if you haev the time or inclination.

Coach B w Andy Katz podcast

Stumbled across this podcast today, Coach Beilein comes in after the 18 min mark. The man hasn't taken a break, hitting the recruiting trail right after the championship game. Also brings up the point that we won about 60 games the last 2 years and we're losing the top 6 players that helped us do so, 7 if Matthews leaves. Future is very bright, I hope we give the freshman time to adjust and learn the offense (and defense!) as they will certainly improve come March next year. Can't wait to see what our coach is able to do with all this young talent! https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2018-04-24/march-madne…
