I said coming into this game that this may be Michigan's toughest game left.
And we sure didn't make it look that way.
For the second straight game, leading scorer Katelynn Flaherty had an off night (13 points). And for the second straight time, the 5-time B1G Freshman of the Week Kysre Gondrezick has picked up the slack. This time she had a career high 25 points.
Michigan went into Mackey Arena tonight and out-rebounded Purdue, 38-24.
Purdue led most of the first quarter before Michigan took the lead and wound up with a 22-18 lead after one and a 38-30 halftime lead.
The Wolverines would pull away lead and stretch the margin to double digits in the 4th quarter, when Kysre really got it going with 13 points in the final quarter alone.
Michigan took this one in the end, 72-62. A HUGE win on the road at a tough place to play that always gets a decent crowd.
Michigan is now 20-5 and 9-2 in the B1G. This Michigan team has reached 20 wins faster than any other team in PROGRAM HISTORY.
Michigan will return to Crisler and take on Wisconsin (5-18) on Sunday. The Wolverines beat the Badgers at Kohl Center back on New Year's Day by 17.
Here's an update on one of the coaches in our rearview mirror. Tommy just became the winningest coach in Harvard basketball history, prompting this feature on CBS's "Men of March". Interesting cameos here by a few recruits who chose Amaker over Belein:
Unless I am gravely mistaken, last night was the first time UM has worn black/dark socks with the maize jerseys since the 2013-2014 season, which ended with an Elite 8 appearance. Since that season, the team has inexplicably been wearing white socks/shoes with the maize jerseys; a horrible looking combination matched only by the horrible play of the team.
Michigan comes out in black socks/shoes with the maize jerseys for the first time in two years and they blow out their hated rival by almost 30. Coincidence? Most certainly not. I hope the coaches have learned their lesson.
Just thought this would be a fun little topic to throw in with the Michigan win last night.
Not sure if anyone is paying attention or noticed, but the nation's leading scorer resides in Mt. Pleasant. Dude is averaging 30.7 (!!!!!!!!!!) PPG which is almost a full 7.0 points more than the player sitting in the second position. And he's a pretty short guy, only sits at 5'9.
CMU hoops have been relatively dormant lately so it's finally nice to be able to point something positive with the program.
4 games with 40 or more, 1 game with 50.
Who's living in the past now?
Izzo: "U-M's seniors have lost 4-5 times to us, and they played with incredible passion that we didn't match"— Minh Doan (@_minhdoan) February 8, 2017
Izzo says he's not making excuses ... but, 'that was seniors against freshmen.'— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) February 8, 2017
Irvin, the other senior, had a whopping 3 points. Bzzzt.
Izzo says his freshmen (Winston, Ward, Langford) didn't understand the seriousness of the game— Minh Doan (@_minhdoan) February 8, 2017
Ward is from Columbus and Winston is from Detroit.
Izzo says MSU had a great week of practice, didn't show up on court.— Matt Pargoff (@MaizeBlueNews) February 8, 2017
