A Letter From Mike Matheny

A Letter From Mike Matheny

Former UM catcher and current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny spent the last couple years coaching his kid's youth baseball team. Before he agreed to do it, though, he sent a letter to the parents of the team. It's pretty interesting to see what he's like as a person, and it's easy to see how many think he'll make a successful MLB manager.

It's long, but you get the idea pretty early on.

OT - Victor Martinez could return this season

Well it looks like V-Mart could return late this season, he didn't have to get the reconstructive surgey to repair his ACL because it has apparently healed enough. Now its just a waiting game, he will get an MRI in July and if it shows that it has healed enough he could return sometime in August. This would just make the Tigers already potent lineup even more awesome. Victor hit .330 with 12 hrs, and 103 RBIs last year as the primary DH.

Tigers play the Rays today trying to win the series after yesterdays 9th inning collapse, Drew Smyly makes his major league debut. Its also Brennan Boesch's birthday today so maybe he will get out of his hitting funk to start the season, my fantasy team sure hopes so.

GO TIGERS!

A bunch of matinee games going on, or about to get under way.

The White Sox have gotten out to a quick start, putting 4 runs up in the first inning on Justin Masterson. How are ChiSox fans feeling about this year's team? Is Adam Dunn capable of hitting a baseball?

Tigers and Rays are set to go at it at 1:05. Good pitching matchup with Verlander vs. Shields. I know some people think that Shields is set to regress a lot this year, and he struggled against the Yanks in his first start, so we'll see how that goes. Here's to hoping Verlander picks up right where he left off last week.

With Fister going on the DL over the weekend, someone obviously was going to have to take his spot. Well, it looks like the decision has been made (per Chris Iott, MLive):

The Tigers selected Wilk to start Saturday against the White Sox in Chicago. The Tigers needed a starting pitcher to take the place of Doug Fister, who went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a left costochondral strain.

Andy Oliver and Casey Crosby both struggled in their starts (Sunday and Monday, respectively), while Wilk posted a really solid outing: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks, 0 runs allowed.

The other good news? The player to be demoted to make room for Wilk is Brandon Inge!

Inge will be the designated hitter tonight for the Mud Hens as he begins a rehabilitation assignment from a left hamstring strain. He is eligible to return from the disabled list Saturday.

Let's hope he tears it up in Toledo, thus improving his trade stock, and someone bites and makes an offer for him.

OT: Ozzie Guillen suspended for 5 games

He just had his press conference where (speaking in Spanish) he apologized to the Latin-American community for his comments. Here's a link to ESPN's summary of things.

"I feel like I betrayed my Latin community," Guillen said, according to ESPN's translation of his comments in Spanish. "I am here to say I am sorry with my heart in my hands and I want to say I'm sorry to all those people who are hurt indirectly or directly."

I say good for him for owning up to it and apologizing; this isn't an attitude he's adopted in the past with other comments he's made. But I feel like the Marlins suspending him is, I don't know, inadequate? I don't think that he should be fired, but it just seems odd. As an organization, you've got to send the message that you don't tolerate this, don't agree, etc., and I suppose they accomplished that by suspending him; but it just seems odd to go "Hey, you just complimented a dictator, you can't do that, we're going to suspend you 5 games." Maybe arbitrary is the word I'm looking for.

A nice little Easter afternoon treat. I hope you're all enjoying the holiday.

Scherzer takes the mound as the Tigers look to open the season with a sweep of the always threatening Red Sox.

It looks like Fister is headed to the 15 day - DL, so we'll start the season shuffling the rotation already. As well, the Tigers batters put the league on notice yesterday. It's still early, but if we can just get one game like that (a 10-0 win featuring 5 homers) once a week, it's going to be a fun season.

Go Tigers, and as always... GO BLUE.

It's like Christmas day for us baseball fans. I've been up since 5:00 am.

Here's to Olde Detroit and the Tigers bringing the trophy back to the Motor City.

And if you pull for any other team, out of the good nature of Opening Day, good luck to you as well, and may the baseball gods smile on your favorite club from their lofty thrones!

Happy Opening Day, MGoCommunity!
