The team representing the state of Michigan will now play Wisconsin. Nice game, fellas. 1-0, the good guys. The other guys go home to Hamilton, Ohio.
No love for 3,000 hits? I know it’s old news (Aug 7th)*, but we did get an A-Rod retirement thread on that day. I went back 7 pages looking for an Ichiro post and was surprised no one posted anything.
Ichiro is now one of 30 MLB players with 3,000 hits. Pretty cool that the 42 year old legged out a triple on his 3,000th hit. Ichiro and Rose are the only players with 3,000 hits in their first 16 seasons and he is tied with Rose for most 200 hit seasons (10). He started his “rookie” season as a 27 year old helped usher in the influx of Asian position players.
IMHO - Class act player with a beautiful swing and sure to be in the HOF. His jersey, cleats, arm guard and batting gloves he wore when he hit #3,000 were sent to the HOF.
My cool story – I met (briefly) his parents and wife after a Braves game last summer.
* I’ve been busy and neglected this blog recently. SIAP - I looked!
Home run. That's like storybook type stuff.
Didn't see this posted, but Harbaugh got some pretty good heat on his first pitch at the White Sox - Cubs game Wednesday. Looks like he's been practicing a bit since his first pitch for the Tigers.
Will attempt to embed video in comments, but here is the link.
and another from MLB.com
Edit: Looks like he also borrowed Matt Szczur's shoes? You can see him taking them off at the end of the second video.

LET'S GO AL
Now that the Tigers wrapped up their first half of the season today (46-43), the ASG is looming.
The Futures game is going on right now on MLB featuring two Tigers prospects including one who should be on the team right now in Joe Jimenez.
But the winner of Tuesday's ASG gets home field in the World Series. Should it be like that?
It certainly makes the game more interesting, and I like the idea. But I think they should change the selection process big time. I think if home field in the World Series is on the line, you have to get rid of the fans picking the starters and have them pick the reserves instead once the starters are named.
What say you?
This is the one all star game in this country where the players actually try and where the result does matter. Even if they got rid of the home field rule, this would still be the best all star game.
The Detroit News has a nice article on an upcoming documentary about Mark "The Bird" Fidrych.
I'll never forget that summer. I was in high school in the Detroit area. Fidrych actually came to an interview with high school students, and I was a photographer for our student paper, taking his picture, talking to him, next to him. Not an uber cool, unapproachable guy (maybe the times were different). Anyway, he was a simple, down to earth, happy go lucky, approachable guy. I can see how John and Jim Harbaugh loved him too. I don't have cable or get the MLB network, but I think this is one special I'd like to see.
The producer of the movie, Bruce Cornblatt, loved the project, and loved the interviews with Jim and John. About Jim, the article says,
Jim Harbaugh, in the documentary, called Fidrych his favorite player growing up, and had a touching story about the time he was at Tiger Stadium as a fan and Fidrych came over and said hi. Jim Harbaugh the young boy was speechless. The day after that Monday night game, Jim Harbaugh said he was pitching in Little League — and mimicking all of Fidrych's mound antics.
Can't exactly say why, but my eyes teared up just a bit thinking back to that summer. Where does time go?
Major league games are great, but they murder your wallet and you probably aren't going to a handful or more of them a year unless you're affluent.
I love going to minor league games. I have a stadium that just got built in my hometown within walking distance and there's one I live a short drive from for 9 months a year when at school.
I've been to
- Fifth Third Field in Toledo (Hens killed Columbus 10-0 tonight)
- Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park
- Great Lakes Loons in Midland
- Pensacola Blue Wahoos
- Jimmy Johns Field in Utica, MI
