Walk-on Brendan White given scholarship. How does this affect our scholarship limit?

Curious what this means for our scholarship limit. My understanding is that we're already over the limit and needing some attrition to put us at the right spot. Does this move not change our limit, or does it indicate possibly even further losses than anticipated?

Just congratulate the kid ferchrissake.

Congratulations Brendan!!!
Now to my question, weirdo...
January 25th, 2019 at 12:29 AM ^
#1. His name is Brendan White
#2. It doesn't. He's a senior and will be graduating at the end of this year so most likely it just helps him out for his final year. From the post though, it looks like he may get a 5th year, in which case we are down one scholarship for next year.

I edited the title to reflect the correct last name.

I agree. Will, you seem a little too big for your britches.
January 25th, 2019 at 9:50 AM ^
It’s a legit comment. Otherwise Gentleman Squirrel’s comment above correcting his name doesn’t make sense
January 25th, 2019 at 9:55 AM ^
What part of Delhi are you from?
January 25th, 2019 at 11:33 AM ^
I'm assuming you have previous issues with Will. If not, way over the top.
A lot of people have been calling for stronger mods to clean up the trolls. I agree and appreciate what I've read of Will so far.
If this is a continuation of a previous arguement, I have no opinion.

He's doing his job, why would you have a problem with that, on your first day here?

I'm guessing this was a leftover scholarship from the 2018 season so will zero effect. Usually after the season, if they are under the scholarship limit they give the extras to walkons who they feel earned them.

Good for Mr. Wright bad for anyone trying to find a negative in this.

... bad for anyone trying to find a negative in this.
C’mon Q, you’ve been here a long time ... you should know there is ALWAYS a negative from the the “Hand Wringers.”

i'm confused. i posted the tweet for the board....

- Noice! I like to see the program finding ways to reward kids who have put in the work.
- It's Brendon White - he's a WR who saw limited action, but in multiple games, in 2018.
- He attended Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale for HS (Hiss!)
- Looks like we might be getting him mixed up with MSU's 2019 RB recruit Brandon Wright.

It does affect our scholarship limit.
We now have one less open scholarship. You're welcome.
January 25th, 2019 at 1:18 PM ^
Since we're on mgoblog, and being pedantic is fair game, I will note that "less" is not universally considered to be incorrect in cases like the one above--viz., when the discrete, countable object in question is one in number.
So, if we were discussing multiple scholarships, then "fewer scholarships" would be the correct formulation.
If we are discussing one scholarship, then "one less scholarship" becomes acceptable. (In fact, some guides to English usage insists that "fewer" is actually incorrect in this context.)
January 25th, 2019 at 1:24 PM ^
If we're truly going to be precise, it doesn't affect our scholarship limit at all. It's still 85.

Love me some grammar!

I would assume that the coaches have a pretty good idea of who will not be coming back, even if that information hasn't come out just yet.
January 25th, 2019 at 5:39 AM ^
Every year we somehow have to rediscover the fact that the coaches know more about this than we do. I had no reason to suspect this year would be any different.
January 25th, 2019 at 7:36 AM ^
You can always hope it's different.
January 25th, 2019 at 7:43 AM ^
I genuinely do not hope MGoBoard knows more about this than the coaches.
January 25th, 2019 at 8:38 AM ^
I always say that if this board were truly in the know and in charge, we would be Wake Forest but with cooler helmets on a good day. Note: "on a good day".
January 25th, 2019 at 6:34 AM ^
There will be more transfers, which will leave more spots open. In my opinion.
January 25th, 2019 at 6:59 AM ^
Hey Ace (Williams) are you really going to try and pretend that you are an insider again?
January 25th, 2019 at 7:09 AM ^
In his absence he must have stockpiled puppet accounts that refer to him as "Shea." I'm amazed at the number of upvotes he gets.
January 25th, 2019 at 8:08 AM ^
I think that is a safe prediction as there are transfers every year. Predicting dismissals from the team would be true prognostication.
January 25th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
I’m not an insider. Saying my opinion pretty much tells you I dont know, it’s my opinion.
Peters will transfer in my opinion.
Nordin will transfer in my opinion.
That doesn’t make me an insider. Those are my opinions. My name is not Shea. I am not an insider.
January 25th, 2019 at 9:59 AM ^
Hopefully he is using "starter" loosely and it is Nordin. But no matter what, the result will be one less starter returning from last year (see what I did there?).
My fingers are crossed that the receiving corps stays intact. A transfer there would kneecap my excitement for the season.
January 25th, 2019 at 2:39 PM ^
Well we were 3 over the 85 limit for next year before this announcement. So we would now need two more besides the ones who are talking about
January 25th, 2019 at 9:24 AM ^
That's exactly what an insider named Shea would say.

Good to know that we've got so much talent that we can afford to hand out scholarships to walk-ons .
I'm sure he's a great kid and he works hard, but Harbaugh is way too into walk-ons.
January 25th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
Well we have 80 to use, and if we will only be using 78 or 79 based on attrition, why shouldn't you reward a kid who has been paying his way for 3 years?
January 25th, 2019 at 11:29 AM ^
85 is the scholarship limit.
January 25th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
The reason we shouldn't is because we're in the business of winning football games, not rewarding walk-ons who try hard.
Give the scholly to someone who might contribute on the field in a game.
January 25th, 2019 at 7:16 AM ^
Good for him. As a walk-on he has worked his ass off for the team.
January 25th, 2019 at 7:36 AM ^
Congrats to Brendan. These scholly numbers always work out in the end. This likely means that the 2019 class has reached its final number and the roster is solidified. So now everyone needs to get to work and get a little better every day. The season is long-not as long as the off-season.
January 25th, 2019 at 7:51 AM ^
Great for this player, will save him or parents $40.000 or something like that, but do not expect him to get a 5th year, saying that ,can someone enlighten me on what has happened to the 3 QB's on the Netflex high school football saga ?
January 25th, 2019 at 8:20 AM ^
Well to my knowledge and using simple math that would mean there is one less scholarship available now.
January 25th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
After thorough research, I've determined we have one less than before it was offered.
I'd also assume the coaches wouldn't have offered it if they thought it would be needed to bring in a 5 star.
January 25th, 2019 at 9:04 AM ^
It's a fair question. Michigan was three over by my count. I know at least one guy here is gone after spring and probably two or three more from among older players who've already been passed by younger guys. I couldn't begin to guess who else might leave (and I'd prefer we not guess out loud on any of them please) but chances Michigan goes the next 7 months without losing 4 or more from this roster is slim to nil.
January 25th, 2019 at 9:49 AM ^
Interesting!!! If this team in not STRONGLY competing for an NC, especially beginning in 2020, then Michigan has a coaching problem. Realistically, with the OL and the skill players on offense and a solid defense the 2019 team could well "take care of business". First year players and first year coaches are an excuse-not a reason...these players and coaches win every year...Michigan needs to also.
