Sam Webb Interview With MBB Assistant Mike Boynton
Fascinating (and long) interview this morning on WTKA with Sam Webb and Mike Boynton, the former Oklahoma State head coach who Dusty May hired as an assistant. If you're feeling good about the direction of our basketball program, you're going to feel even better after listening to this guy.
He's from Brooklyn, he's funny (his story about trying to tell his wife where Stephen F. Austin University is was great), he's engaging, he's open, and he provides excellent insights into where Dusty is taking the program. He goes through Dusty's philosophy when it comes to recruiting and the portal, and he gives detailed info on each of our new players.
I wasn't taking notes, but his insights on Rubin Jones were especially good, and why having a fifth-year guy who knows nothing but winning are excellent.
I'm pumped to have this guy as one of our assistants, and I'm pumped about these players. GIve it a listen.
LINK.
Not to mention, he can probably get Cade to swing by during recruiting visits!
Spent about 10 seconds pondering what possible connection Boynton has to McNamara.
True! His story about recruiting Cade was also great. He first saw him as a high school freshman. He was at the school to watch some other guy and saw this kid who was dominating and asked the coach who the kid was and why nobody was talking about him. The coach said, "He's only 14 years old." So Boynton because the first coach to say hi, and kept at it.
Heard some of this on my drive into work this morning; was super impressed with Boynton
Great hearing his wife’s parents live in Holland
“I don’t think everybody’s made that decision (about returning), but as we’re putting together our roster, guys are maybe seeing maybe I oughta look somewhere else if I’m not going to be a primary part of what they’re doing moving forward.”
This is pretty telling right here. Don't expect all of the Juwan's guys to stay with Michigan.
Sounds like a hint that Burnett may bounce.
It's not necessarily Burnett. It could be one of the two guards. They're being recruited over by the transfers and the incoming freshmen.
Brooks is the only other guard that wasn’t recruited by May. Cheddar already said he’s staying so other than that it would have to be one do the two above or Jace
or GW3
Great to see an energetic new batch of assistants. I like the old staff but it had gotten stale.
Well worth your time to watch the whole thing. One thing I took away was I'm not not quite sure Burnett and Howard are gonna be on the team next year. I feel like he could have easily confirmed at least Burnett was gonna be here because Webb point blanked asked him and he gave pretty much a non answer.
Geez. What would that be - 4 schools in 4 years?
Great interview...he's an excellent communicator and seems very personable.
Strictly rumor mill material, but someone over on the Victors board was hinting that another roster spot was opening up. When asked for clarification, they said they considered both Burnett and Jace to be gone, but didn't make clear whether that meant another spot was opening up in addition to Burnett and Jace, or if the spot opening up was one of Burnett and Jace.
It's still fluid. It's clear that May is still recruiting for wing players in addition to Goldin. Juwan's guard may or may not stick with Michigan.
The four Juwan's guys still have until May 1st to make a decision.
This is terrific. Boynton's great. May's great.
Thanks for posting. It's long but gave me something to listen to while I cooked.
