OT: My worst gambling beat EVER...

Submitted by GLORY on May 3rd, 2024 at 2:36 AM

Never EVER been rogered quite like this.  Won't bored you with a long narrative, but it's UNREAL:

The Maple Leafs up 1-0 against the Bruins mid third period, I put in a sizable LIVE bet on under 2.5 total goals.  The Maple Leafs score again with ~2min to go to make it 2-0.  Nervous, but still good, feeling confident.

Now....5 seconds to go...shot, rebound, buzzzer...I WON!

So I thought...

.1 second!   .1 **** second!

Worst beat EVER.

My father says gambling is the “tax on being stupid.” I agree with him on gaming, where the house has a built in advantage. But there is always a way to get an advantage on sports if you put in the work. Remember, 90% of gamblers quit right before they would have hit a big parlay.

No one posted after the Wings final game this year, but that one timer from the point by Perron with 5 seconds left to send into OT was unreal. Surely must have blown thousands in bets, what an amazing shot! And then the heartbreaker seeing the Flyers basically give the game to the Caps.

OP, don't start the blog down this path. Anyone who's gambled enough has similar or worse bad beat stories and I don't think people want to hear mine or others.

Just as an aside, if you feel the need to vent to strangers after suffering a bad beat, be very careful gambling.

I picked Baltimore’s Bradish for both of my teams. He made his first start after being on the IL to start the season. With 2 outs in the fifth, he walked Judge so he got pulled in a game the O’s won 7-2. That cost me 2 W’s (1 for each team).

Stuff like that, I assume.

eh, I wouldn't feel bad.  It is OT. You shared a funny story about a bad beat on a sports bet on a sports blog.  I think it opens up others to share their stories too. I'm not a gambler, but don't think a story like this means you have a problem.

I am worried that there are a lot of people who do lose a lot on gambling. Watched a documentary on it.  Crazy what types of losses people were taking.

Eh, I don't mind hearing this type of OT story.  It's short and to the point and a bonus with a properly embedded video.  Only thing missing was the amount wagered.  Otherwise, it's fine.  I got some enjoyment out of it, mainly knowing that I'm not the only one.  I have a few "doozies" myself (considerably worse than this one).

Mine wasn’t necessarily a bad beat, but who I betted with. I had a plan to go against the grain during the 2007 March Madness. Everyone was picking Florida to repeat, so I picked Ohio led by Old Man Oden and Conley.

It came down to me and my former co worker Will for all the bracket money. He had the Gators & I had Ohio. Florida repeated as champion and that was closest I ever got to winning the March Madness pool at work.

Took me a while but i finally decided Uconn was safest pick this year even though they won last year also. Then on the other side, I couldn't pick anyone with any confidence. I ended up going with Purdue figuring a lot of people would not. I chose the correct championship game and winner and still didn't win my bracket. Choosing Kentucky to the final four was my downfall.

we played in toronto when i was on the jr. wings and were treated like celebrities, and then some.  beat the canadian junior national team (the 'young nats') and you'd think we won the stanley cup.  saw the leafs play the LA kings for the western conf title years back during the first gulf war and decided then that i liked them and would root for them if not in conflict with the wings.   i don't think they've won the cup since something like ~67?  hockey's version of the lions.

1967 was the last Stanley Cup won by Toronto and the last Cup for the Original Six. As a youth, I was still pissed at the Leaf’s for beating Gordie and my Red Wings in ‘64. Montreal beat us in ‘66,  so I didn’t care who won in ‘67.  My attitude about the Leafs has softened since my pond hockey days. Can’t say the same for Les Habitats.

I cannot root for Brad Marchand despite that I love Pasta and Coyle. I have never wanted to see a player except for Claude Lemiuex or Milan Lucic get their head taken off at center ice as bad as Marchand except for maybe Claude Lemieux or Lucic. I actually really like this Leafs team. Nylander is a beast and Matthews is awesome.

A nanny-state comment to start the day:

I'm not thrilled that U.S. citizens are easily able to place bets of all types from their phones. Many of them have poor impulse control, a shallow understanding of probability, and are living check-to-check.

I think we should go back to the days when the only legal place to gamble was Nevada.

And gamblers who didn't win called it a "loss" not a "beat."

It still seems like a good bet.

I don't gamble, but I couldn't resist (I can't even remember the name of the site) giving away money for the super bowl:  I bet $5 on KC and $5 on SF, risking 24 cents on the vigorish for a possible gain of $200 in betting credit.  Won the $5 on KC and then made offsetting basketball bets on the $200 to come away with about $90.
