College Hockey Junkies: Transfer Portal Tracker
The Grand Forks Herald is maintaining a college hockey portal tracker. I'll have to stop claiming that nothing good ever comes out of North Dakota hockey.
It seems like there's been a step change in the portal this year. Previous years it was mostly:
- fringe large college players hopping down to grab more PT (James Sanchez)
- small college guys transferring up for exposure late in their careers (Jake Barczewski)
- upperclassmen getting squeezed by large recruiting classes/scholarship situations (oddly we sent Kevin Lohan to BC and then got Marshall Warren back a few years later)
There are lots of drafted players in the portal this year, which feels like a new phenomenon. And what's going on at Wisconsin? They had a pretty good year, but seem to be the leaders in high profile defections this year.

Not high profile, but per Brian's twitter link in the front page post, it looks like NMU has 13 or 14 guys in the portal...
A picture was going around showing something like all but 2 guys off Northerns typical line chart are in the portal. That smells more like a culture problem than a bunch of guys trying to up transfer
I know just enough about college hockey to be dangerous. But I remember reading there has been an influx of NHL draftable talent in recent years so I'd think that more drafted skaters in the portal is probably largely a function of that.
speaking of junkies... one of the things I miss most about the site's old days; in its hockey previews' capsule summary at the top it would say
Kind of out of date, though; you can find lines on most of the betting sites nowadays (you can find lines on most anything nowadays)...
Identify top ranked goalie, acquire.
Marty Turco II come on down
Ok, so which goalie do we get? Scarfone is a Jr, so he can't get into UM. Next 4 are Freshman or soph, so they are options, but AIU and Mercyhurst are very low level. Maybe we go after a Whale?
They would probably have good net coverage but be terrible at skating and puck handing
