Bad takes go here to be exposed later: JJ McCarthy

Right, so, I've had it.  First JJ was underrated, and so now apparently he's overrated, because this is 21st century America and there is no golden mean.  The same people that thought Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield [ed: long string of failures deleted here, highlighted by, but certainly not limited to, JaMarcus Russell], Tim Couch, Akili Smith, and Ryan Leaf were all can't-miss prospects, now think JJ is overrated.

I lost it in this pile-on from CBS Sports:

J.J. McCarthy is going to go way higher than he should

J.J. McCarthy isn't a top-10-caliber talent

...he is a late first-round pick, and any team who takes him in the first half of the first round is reaching.

J.J. McCarthy will be in drafted too high because of 'sheep syndrome'

McCarthy is a good player, one who might be worthy of being drafted in the back end of the first round. But a top-10 pick? Please.

This is a convenient jumping-off point because three different guys [Jeff Kerr, Garrett Podell, Pete Prisco) all pile on here (initially included Bryan DeArdo but he wasn't so bad).

Post all the terrible JJ assessments you've come across ('they never threw the ball!' 'muh counting stats!') here so we can find them to mock them later, like we Bills fans do with the people who thought Josh Allen was turrible.

Why are most QB's overrated?  The reason is QB's are evaluated on their potential ceiling, not their floor or current body of work.  They also do not account for the most important aspect of a QB which is pre-processing of the play prior to snap.   We see many college QB's who win plays after the snap.  We rave about JJ McCarthy throwing on the run and escaping the pass rush.  He is not the first or last QB who will look good.  However, that kind of play is unsustainable in the NFL.  The opposing defenses are too good.  If a QB depends on an athletic play every play, they are doomed.  It does not matter how fast they are, how strong they are, or how accurate their arm is.  The most important capability is calling the right play and knowing the right read before anything happens.

In the case of JJ McCarthy like most QB's, we really do not know.  They are not put in a position to tell us, or they are so good they out athlete everyone.  Monday morning QB, we know why CJ Stroud turned out so well.  He actually played extremely well against Michigan.  Knowing nothing about JJ McCarthy the odds of him being equal to his draft stock is unlikely just on raw statistics.    It appears the NFL has not figured this out.

I like JJ, I think he's a better prospect than Drake Maye.

I also have no idea how any QB will do in the NFL, a quality I seem to share with every other human being on Earth.
