The Ace Pod 3.7: Tick, Tick
This episode, as always, is brought to you by the law offices of E. Jason Blankenship, who may be socially distanced from the courthouse but is still taking on clients. You can find his new website here.
You can follow Connor on Twitter and subscribe to his newsletter, A Lonely Impulse of Delight, that includes literary analysis of Calvin & Hobbes and, blissfully, nothing about Michigan athletics. Dan is not a writer but he is @ThiccStauskas on Twitter. If you’d like to hear more, the two co-host the newly titled Yet Another Michigan Football Podcast. Alex Cook you know from his writings here, and his blog about The Grand Castle.
[Writeup after the jump]
SEGMENT ONE: COACHTHOUGHTS
Our feelings about the latest rumors, why everything must take a painfully long time, how this could end up going, etc. Answering listener questions on Jim Harbaugh’s leverage, what he’d have to do to get off the hot seat if he signs an extension, and whether insider-y info influences our desire to see Michigan move on.
SEGMENT TWO: MORE COACHTHOUGHTS
Would we want Matt Campbell to bring his assistants? All of them? Some of them? Keep the scheme? Let him choose? (Please let him choose. Don’t RichRod era this.) Also, answering why you don’t hear much from the players during these situations.
SEGMENT THREE: TRANSFER TARGETS
We scour the transfer portal for some names, mostly at defensive tackle. Surprise, I know.
SEGMENT FOUR: DAN’S BASKETBALL PODCAST
Answering questions on M’s two-point defense, whether they’re the best team in the Big Ten, how they match up against the other contenders, and whether we should expect Hunter Dickinson to be around for very long. Also, Dan breaks down the difference between a Problem™ and a Bucket™.

Ummmm... not sure what you mean by that. I remember RichRod trying to run the Read Option with Threet. I thought it was short sighted and stupid, but hey, he got to run what he wanted.

Yes, you are correct and i was baffled by that one. RR round hole/square pegged our offense. He forced our personal to run his offense which was fucking ludicrous.

RichRod couldn’t bring Casteel with him for DC. That was ok the first year, not so much after that.
January 6th, 2021 at 10:47 AM ^
I thought that was Casteel's choosing, not UM's though.

I thought Michigan offered him less salary to be the DC there so Casteel stayed because he's making more money being the DC and I think Rich Rod had to choose between Barwis and Casteel for salary reasons since Michigan refused to give him larger coaches salary pool?

That could be. I honestly don't remember.

IIRC, it wasn't about money, but the length of the contract. Michigan gave year-to-year contracts to assistant coaches at that time, while Casteel had a multi-year contract at WVU.
But I don't think he's saying that we didn't let RR choose his scheme. He did bring a lot of his WVU assistants over. I think he's talking about RR forcing Shafer and GERG to run the 3-3 stack as their base defense.

I'm not understanding this desire to keep anyone from the current staff aside from Warinner. Those are the guys partly responsible for the mess the roster is in. Yeah, an argument can be made for Sherrone because of his recruiting, but in no world should there be any fight to keep a TE coach if the new guy wants someone else.

What keeps coach JH at Michigan without signing an extension? Seriously? It's a pure business decision. He has a great contract in place now,. There is zero incentive for him to negotiate a less favorable position.
It's quite opposite. JH has highly marketable skills and will only opt for more favorable terms and conditions. Wouldn't it be ironic if JH's return for his final year results in his best season yet? He has great incentive for this, positioning him for greater marketability and demand in his next job a year from now.
January 6th, 2021 at 9:50 AM ^
So he had no incentive to do his best job any of these other years?

Not signing an extension damages the future Michigan recruiting classes. Why would you commit if you don't know if Harbaugh will be back with Michigan when you enroll at Michigan

the fact that this podcast doesn't use a Ska theme song is quite sad

Lots of players in transfer portal our coach could be working on if he weren’t waiting for a nfl offer that is not coming

Well, already lost the top DT transfer target to Florida. Offseason going about as well as the season did so far.
