The invasion of Grenada is more apt. Cuba and the Soviets embarrassed us at the Bay of Pigs. We responded by hammering them when they were impossibly overmatched.
At least I hope it's apt.
Damn it Brandon.

Relative to the 2011 defense, which was the best one since 2006? Yes, we are better on paper. Going into 2011, we were thinking Mike Martin would be good, Demens would be ok, and I think that's it.
Going into this year, Jake Ryan and Blake Countess are all-Big 10 types. We've got really nice depth at linebacker. Our defensive ends are nice players. Whoever plays opposite Countess should be a nice player. The big concern for me is the interior of the defensive line. If they can find 3 guys who can consistently rotate in and be servicable, this defense is really good. On paper, it's a top 3rd of the Big 10 defense. If things go well, we can challenge for #2 behind MSU.

On paper, this is the best defense since 2006. They won't be at that level, but they may be at the level the 2011 defense was at the end of the season. If that happens, we're probably looking at 10 wins.

I'd actually prefer to be 70-80 rows up. I feel like rows in the teams don't give enough perspective on what's happening.

Wait, polite French people? When I visited, I thought they were exceptionally rude--and I'm not the type of guy to play the obnoxious American stereotype.
As an aside, back when I flew planes for the Marine Corps, they did deny me entrance to French airspace after authorizing entry. Aviation just doesn't work like that. My assumption was an overnight diplomatic spat that never made the papers, but it was ridiculous. The extra gas we wasted left us just above emergency fuel when we landed in Germany.

I'd guess most schools give players going pro a firm handshake and tell them to come back and finish school when they're ready. It's good PR and the marginal cost of an additional student is somewhere near zero.

I don't think it helps him maintain his ideal state. He wants the NCAA system to remain in place.
However, he knows the system is in a lot of trouble and the small schools are blocking the reforms he sees as necessary to keep the Big 10-type model viable financially. Helping to kill the NCAA's case is his way of pushing reforms in the relatively minor scope of this case with the hope that the Kessler case doesn't push the reforms out of his and the other conference commissioners control.
That's my guess as to his motivation. Assuming he just f-ed up, like Brian seems to, is just not correct.

Jim Delaney knew exactly what he was doing when he firebombed the NCAA's lawya-case. He is in charge because he is a smart dude.
Honestly, the NCAA's lawyers are probably having the time of their life. They can't win, they know it, and are basically spending time coming up with ridiculous crap to say in a court of law. The side bets must be awesome.

Michigan isn't in deep right now and probably never will be. Rutgers is f-ed.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||I totally disagree on the use||
I totally disagree on the use of department funds. Michigan is doing the same thing as every major athletic department in the country, which is binging on huge capital projects backed by projected TV revenue and ticket sales, using university AAA credit ratings. A lot of these projects are for non-revenue sports, which will generate zero financial return.
This is against a backdrop of huge lawsuits that could upend the college athletics expense model.
For me, it's fundamentally irresponsible to finance multi-million projects that are expected to generate no return. It's insane to do it in such an uncertain environment. Let's say the various lawsuits go against the NCAA, which seems, given the reports out of the O'Bannon trial, likely. Assume the result is Michigan ends up paying $1000/month to scholarship football and basketball players.
85 scholarship FB players
That's $98K/month or $1,176,000 / year. 20% of your surplus is gone. That's only $12K per player. Michigan can afford that. There are probably 10-11 departments in the Big 10 that can't. If that number goes to $2000/month, the model might explode.
This is a criticism of Brandon and basically every other AD in the country. The facilities arms race is totally unsustainable and is at-risk today. If the model fails, public universities (taxpayers) all over the country are on the hook for short-sighted AD decisions.

Here's why A&M is giving up jersey sales for star players:
"...Texas A&M made just $59,690 on jersey sales for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013?"
There's no money in it, yet it is a very visible contradiction of the amatuerism hype the NCAA promotes.

Do a little mental math and make a few reasonable assumptions and you'll get an okay approximation of football revenue and costs. It's a huge, huge profit margin.
I'd guess 100% of football costs for the year are paid after the first game with minimal profit. The rest is probably profit.
|5 weeks 5 hours ago||From a classic cost||
From a classic cost accounting perspective, you'd look at a driver--perhaps coverage time. That said, I think it's 100% football for the cable channel. Comcast isn't carrying BTN for wrestling or basketball coverage. Without football, the network wouldn't exist. I'd allocate the BTN money entirely or nearly entirely to football.
|5 weeks 8 hours ago||I think a lot of the||
I think a lot of the subsidies are accounting related more than anything. Rutgers has a sizable student fee that goes directly to the athletic department. My guess is Michigan's "subsidy" is a cost accounting measure for facility maintenance or "rent" for a portion of one or more buildings.
Personally, I hate these aggregate revenue and expense numbers. I want them broken out by football revenues / expenses, basketball revenues / expenses, and then all the other sports. Football and basketball make enormous profits that are used to subsidize the other teams. Furthermore, the projected revenues from football and basketball are used to finance facilities for all the other sports. If the TV model falls apart, the university will be stuck with a big bill for what I view as completely unneccesary athletic facilities used by under 1% of the student body.

Dude, Bennie Friedman has more Big 10 titles, Big 10 MVPs, All-America Awards, and NFL MVPs than Denard ever will. He's considered the first great professional passer. In 1928, he led the NFL in passing touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, and extra points.
Look, the 2010 defense opposite the 2008 offense would murder the NFL champs from the 1920s. Bros didn't even lift then. Got it. Arguing Denard was one of the all-time greats is certainly doable, but arguing he's the best QB in school history? That gets really hard, really fast.

I almost left all the point-a-minute teams and Yost out. The quality of competition just isn't there, you know? It's hard to separate quality from facing really crappy teams.
I almost picked 2010 offense, but with 1997 defense, I thought Denard was too turnover prone.

Yeah, that's the twist I outlined...
If Lloyd Carr is your worst coach and the 1947 offense is the worst offense, then you can't lose. This forces a more judicious allocation of dollars at the high end.
