I bet Rutgers isn't in the top 50

Ditch Penn State, Rutgers, Nebraska, and Maryland. Play a 9 game conference schedule with the other 10 teams.
You've now heard a better idea.

Let's be clear, this is "A Modest Proposal," not some less than brilliant idea.
Second, this modest proposal has nowhere near the obnoxiousness of fan base. I want to know Oklahoma State's plan to get AAU membership.

Pretty sure Rutgers tickets can be had for about $95 less than the Athletic Department's sale price.

I played a game against Ian Gold's brother in football. Played more or less to a draw, but we didn't run to my side much.
I also played a couple times against Ryan Van Dyke. Really tough to stop when things broke down.

I haven't understood why they have football for a long time. It's so expensive.

Peppers: top-10 (frowny or happy?)
Overall, probably the strongest class we've had in a long time. Lewis is awesome, but not quite a prototype NFL corner, Peppers is just uber-talented, ideal size, and will be really productive. I think Kalis puts it all together this year and is drafted.
Oh yeah, forgot about Wormley. He's an early 2nd round pick. Chesson probably goes in the 4th or so.

Why would college athletics collapse? I don't understand this portion of the argument.
There's a tradeoff to be made between giving a salary to revenue athletes versus better facilities for non-revenue athletes. I'm concerned about building really high-end facilities for non-revenue sports from a budgetary standpoint. A building isn't a one-time cost, but rather an upfront cost and a commitment to maintain the building.
Building very high-end facilities that won't generate any revenue is a model that only works in today's world of college athletics. I'm not sure how long that model actually works, however.

I've always guessed the university subsidy was an accounting issue. Something along the lines of university maintenance maintaining the athletic buildings, but the athletic department not transferring money to the appropriate university account.

As a Bay Area transplant, I'm probably biased, but they're so much fun to watch, it's impossible not to like them.
Plus, they're basically the ideal John Beilein team. That counts for something in my book.

I'd prefer he stay coaching Michigan. He can run the State Department's Twitter feed, though. That would be fun.

I'm not really sure who this benefits.
If the goal is TV dollars, I'm not sure anyone gets more money. Maybe we'd get something more if Texas came in, but Texas would get less.
If the goal is football competition, you'd be bringing in a few teams to shore up the other half of the conference, but we'd never play them.
By the way, the Big 10 shares its revenue and won't let Texas be in charge. I can't see that ever happening unless they ditch the Longhorn Network. Even then, it's going to be a hard sell for both sides.

There's a keeping up with the Joneses factor here, except most coaches don't want to keep up.
Summer is coaches chance to work normal weeks, see their kids, etc. Most just don't want to go to satellite camps, much less organize them.
Harbaugh is the type of guy who is hyper competitive and loves this stuff, so he'll always have some edge there.
|34 weeks 3 days ago||With the injuries to||
With the injuries to basically the whole defensive line and OSU's excellent defense keeping our defense on the field, we were dead before the game started. I actually thought Durkin did well given the circumstances.
We basically have Mattison that pass for the last couple years. Durkin did great and the team is less without him -- although Brown may actually be better.

There's a specific fee that's part of tuition to supplement the athletic budget.
It's an arms race and they're trying to spend like everyone else without the financial capacity to do so.

Cut and run.

Bo was supposedly very angry with Illinois for firing Gary Moeller after 4 seasons.
They won the next two games against them by a combined score of 115-35.
Choose your enemies carefully.
|45 weeks 6 days ago||Michigan ran about 1.2 plays||
Michigan ran about 1.2 plays for every 1 play Northwestern ran. This is probably more dominant than it appears because we forfeited two possessions due to the kickoff return and interception return touchdowns.
It's a nice proxy for control because it removes pace. In the Michigan / Northwestern context, it matters a little less because they both play pretty slowly. Against a team like Indiana that really wants to play quickly, you'll see time of possession and play ratio diverge.
|45 weeks 6 days ago||Time of possession is a proxy||
Time of possession is a proxy stat, but the actual information is easier to find. I'd care more about a ratio of plays than game time. It's a four hour game, standing on the field for 4 more minutes vice standing on the sidelines doesn't matter. Running 30 more plays does matter, however.

He's a little too down on a defense that's allowed 31 points in 5 games (minus the Utah pick six).
I like Michigan Monday, but you can almost sense genuine concern relative to OSU. Haven't been able to see that in a while.

Whoa, Harbaugh is the general here.

Smith is starting because he's the best pass blocker, period. Isaac is a monster and, in my opinion, shows much better vision. However, he basically can't pass block, so he can't play.

Disagree, the backs weren't split. This is a traditional wing-t, with the old "t" formation broken and the halfback on the wing.

They couldn't really move the ball against a shitty FCS team. They'll have a couple nice plays, but a freshman QB against that defense isn't going to go well.

Was there a cost-benefit analysis for any of the marketing ploys during Brandon's tenure?
In other words, was there an incremental dollar made from Beyoncé, Eminem, jet pack guy, etc? I understand what they got out of it, but what was the benefit for Michigan?
Oh yeah, Pop Evil, Appalachian State.

To be fair, there are many other ways to ruin your financial future.
|51 weeks 3 days ago||If safeties actually have to||
If safeties actually have to account for a vertical passing game, I think 9-10 wins becomes the expectation rather than about 8. We're going to be able to run the ball better this season, but you're looking at another order of magnitude improvement if the safeties have to hang back.
The other piece you're not accounting for is if Jake Ruddock really does bring quarterback play up to a "B" level or not. If he's not ready to play in this system, there's a 6 win season coming.
Personally, I think we're getting an Arkansas season from last year. By the end of the year, we should be scary. The start might be miserable, though.
