MSU was somewhere above 2 deviations above a typical major conference defense last year. A regression to just 1 deviation above, while still excellent, will require a significantly better offense for the overall team to be elite this year.
MSU has an excellent program and may have taken the mantle from Wisconsin as the best "program" in the conference. They are great at talent identification and development in a way that Michigan hasn't been for 25 years. It's the reason Wisconsin has been good for so long and why OSU dominated the conference during Tressel's run.
However, I don't believe in that team as a national contender. They can certainly win the Big 10 and are probably most likely to do so. I just don't see them making a title run. The Big 10 is going to be a muddle this year and I'm guessing the winner has 2 losses in conference.

Guess what, great football teams retain players. This is Michigan schtick or not, that's why Wisconsin and MSU both have really nice programs. More importantly, it's why Jim Tressel owned the conference for a decade. He kept bringing in 15 player classes that stayed for five years unless they were too damn good to keep off the field and out of the NFL.
Brady Hoke is doing the same thing right now. On paper, this Michigan team is loaded with a 5th year, borderline 5-star QB. If they block anyone, they can no kidding win the conference. Next season, they're the favorites going into the season. Recruiting and retention are the first steps towards excellence.
There are legitimate concerns with the offensive line coaching, but that's basically it. The move to Nussmeier is a decided step in the direction of modern football. His brand of offense is the same one that's torched Big 12 defenses for a decade now.

Sure they're talking about Michigan and not Miami?
With ND and OSU having issues, we're about 9.5 wins on paper. I think the most likely outcome is 9, but 10 and 11 are coming into play.

You guys got it right about retention. The best programs, the ones that win titles year after year, retain and develop players. Regardless of your thoughts on Rodriguez's coaching, strategy, or defensive coordinator hiring decisions, he was awful at roster management.
A coach's job is to identify the right players, develop them, and get them to buy into their system. Rodriguez kept running off players, especially when he first arrived.
Hoke and his staff gets these kids to buy in. That's why Michigan goes six deep at receiver, linebacker, corner, defensive tackle, and running back. It's why there are a truckload of highly rated linemen who are sticking around despite all the issues.
If you wanted him fired after last season, fine. They're going to be loaded next season, with a question at quarterback and offensive line coach.

Disappointing, but Bellomy just wasn't ready. Not even close.
It sure felt like we were going to win that game up until we realized Denard wasn't coming back in.

I missed 2012 MSU because I was on an MBA recruiting trip in Seattle. It was the only game I really wanted to attend that year. Very frustrating.
Also, some guy got into a fight with me on the Internet because I was a terrible student for trying to get a job instead of going to the game.

Why did Brian draft a guy who isn't going to play this season with his first pick? That's dumb.

They've got a top-150 type redshirt freshman. The best realistic hope is Braxton Miller's freshman year, which probably means 8-4 or 9-3 given that the supporting cast should be really nice and Meyer's system is friendly to young QBs.

Actually, I think it's the opposite of professionalization. I'm hoping the coming court decisions press MAC teams to deemphasize sports. EMU, Akron, Kent St, etc have no business playing big-time college football. Instead, they could regionalize, play each other, and shrink their athletic budgets to a sustainable level.
I don't like big-time sports programs that are heavily subsidized by student bodies and taxpayers. Spending enormous amounts of public money on a program that a tiny percentage of students will ever have an opportunity to use isn't a good use of funds--at least in my book.

7-0 and 6-1 are probably the most likely scenarios. Unfortunately, 3-2 and 2-3 are most likely for the last 5.
|1 week 6 days ago||Expecting a win in Columbus||
Expecting a win in Columbus is very optimistic, but I do see OSU taking a step backwards. You can't lose the line they did and Carlos Hyde without a dropoff. Even last year, they weren't the same when Hyde was taking a breather.
That said, I still think they're the favorite to win the conference, with MSU second and Michigan third. The other division doesn't inspire much confidence.
|1 week 6 days ago||I think they're generally||
I think they're generally terrified. Cardale Jones is the current backup, with the much more highly touted JT Barrett behind him. Barrett is a true freshman and I've heard he's pushing Jones.
Basically, they've got our situation last year. A clear, obvious #1 with a vast, terrifying gulf behind him.

Let's be fair, the statement is the most adult statement in modern college football. I mean, Miami basically said "come at me nerds" in its official response to its mess a couple years ago.

He struggled, but was okay. That's basically what I hope Cole can do. It's absurd to expect him to Jake Long as a junior.

My bet is Magnuson moves outside if Kalis can come back. I really hope Cole is Taylor Lewan as a redshirt freshman, but it just seems so improbable that he can come from high school, spend a summer lifting weights, and be ready to play at this level.

I hurt my back about 7 years ago. It took at least 2 before I felt really good again. I didn't stop periodically stop tweaking it until 3 years later.
The back is really hard to compensate for, so you end up not fully recovering for a long time.
