Companies that recruit is a huge deal that too few applicants pay attention to during the application process. Ross isn't as strong a finance school because a lot of the top firms recruit lightly there, not because of some ranking. It's also why we're so strong in consulting and marketing, for example.
Regardless, I think perception is everything in b-school. The education at the top schools is basically the same, with the main difference being total emphasis on cases vs some lecture. If you think Kellogg is best and the firms you care about agree, then it is best.
People tried really hard to complicate b-school selection. I basically looked at the previous paragraph and it was easy. I got everything I wanted from Ross.

I view the focus level rankings as totally made up. To me, the MBA is 100% about name, recruiting opportunities, and alumni network. Stanford for me is way above Wharton there, and their application numbers bear it out. Harvard is, well, Harvard.

I'd argue that Columbia and Stern should be lower too, but when salary is a marker, both will beat Ross every time. Bankers have the highest salary and I feel like Ross is weakest there.
I had a great experience at Ross, so the ranking isn't too important for me.
Also, Wharton should be below Harvard and Stanford. Those two are, at least for me, head and shoulders above the pack in reputation.

The marginal value of increasing margin declines as margin gets higher. A 40 point win is a lot better than a 14 point win, but a 56 point win isn't that much better than 40 points.

The BCS proudly acknowledged it ignored margin of victory.
Margins can and should be considered. A win by 30 is more impressive than a win by 3.

I watched all of the 2000-01 Duke game. I think it started with a 34-4 Duke run. That was opposite a Final Four MSU team.
I missed most Michigan basketball for the next decade while I bounced around the country for work. Some of those teams were bad enough that sending a TV signal outside the BIg 10 footprint violated several anti-smut statutes.

Great comment. This would diminish the EV of a touchdown. Assuming the NFL's goal is more exciting plays, this potential change could backfire.

The problem with gold is that it doesn't have practical uses in proportion to quantity available. It's a bet on affluence and/or gold as currency types.
Gold isn't ever going to be a currency again. Even when there was a gold standard, people still relied on credit and bank notes rather than actual coins. Stocks and bonds, to me, are based on a real moneymaking activity rather than hoping others will continue to want a piece of metal.

For me, Ryan's move is least concerning. I'll bet $1 he sort of plays MLB in a 4-3 alignment, but still has his hand in the field turf for most nickel downs--which is also most downs. The staff just doesn't want teams to force him out of the box to cover up a slot.
The rest of the moves sound like desperation, but Ryan's makes sense to me--especially with improving depth at DE.

I think it's being panned less due to substance and more due to poor rationale. If the rules committee just said they wanted to give teams a minimal amount of time to substitute that would affect timing of very few plays, then there would be argument, but probably acceptance. Player safety is obviously a BS argument.
I don't see a reason to slow down offenses, but I also think defenses should be able to substitute. This rule seems to strike a nice balance, but it's not being sold as such.

The number of snaps in 10 seconds isn't the issue, it's the defense knowing they can substitute--which is a huge advantage relative to old rules.

I'm expecting a lot of no tight end sets this year with two split ends and 1 or more H-Back types. I don't see any of the tight ends outside Butt being able to stay on the field. Bunting is probably too light and too far behind the receivers to play standing up.

Actually, 12 months old isn't too bad. I was assuming they were more like toddlers or early elementary age. You can bring really young kids to a winery and probably still enjoy yourself. The weather here has been extremely mild--even for California--so you can probably go to the small places and have fun.
Try Saddleback Winery. It's owned by an old school Napa guy. Basically, you sit outside on a picnic table and get some wine for about $15/person.

If you're looking for affordable stuff with young kids, go to the Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park. My toddler loved looking at the different plants and running around.

I'm optimistic that a switch to zone blocking will help quite a bit. That may be because I believe in zone blocking a lot more than I believe in man blocking, but I still think the scheme change helps us a lot. I don't think there is a single team in the country running a man-to-man "power" scheme anymore outside of Wisconsin that is able to run the ball very well.
This staff is insane if it doesn't implement spread running techniques this season. We can still move at a snail's pace, but we need to move the math in our favor to move the ball effectively.

Lewan basically murdered people on run plays. On pass plays, the guy lined up on him tried about 25% of the time. As much as we like to make fun of NFL scouts, they know what they're talking about regarding offensive linemen. Lewan was an elite player for several years.

It's a net loss for Michigan. I just can't figure out why the loss is okay here, but not for anything else in the department right now.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Let's go ahead and calculate||
Let's go ahead and calculate how much Michigan will lose relative to a home game against CMU.
Michigan Stadium Ticket Revenue: 110000*65 = 7,150,000
Staff + Facility cost: 500,000
If the basic assumptions are close to right, Michigan probably loses around $1.5MM by playing this game due to travel costs. Or, we could play a home and home with Florida, get the same net as playing in Jerry World, and have two interesting games.
This is totally worthwhile.
