FWIW. Michigan doesn't seem inclined to get re-involved.

I have several prime parking spots at State between Stadium and Granger. I expect the parking situation will be like that of a night fooball game.

Smyly should be in the pen. I still don't understand that Fister trade.

Last year we bonded over 21 Pilots and Jake Bugg, (which got her into some Johhny Cash, Dylan) and The Cure. She was so inspired that she bought an electric guitar and is getting pretty good :)
Looking forward to Artic Monkeys, Black Keys and The Kooks this year's year show.
I like the old school bands that are really talented musicians such as Rush and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer but realize my breed is dying off,lol...

I hope I am alive for the day when I can take a train from A2 to a Red Wings game (in Detroit).
The Joe is old, ugly, uncomfortable and doesn't take advantage of its prime location (no views from inside, poorly planned parking, obstructs what would be a nice river view).
As long as there are fireworks, count me in ; )

Congrats to you and good luck in your future. Your Michigan experience socially and academically will hopefully prepare you well!
By the way I am very proud of Charles Woodson,Juwan Howard, and countless other athletes for the work they do with Mott's Childrens Hospital.

Not sure how you draw this conclusion.
My point was that the academic reputation of MIchigan, especially grad schools, is what is sacred to this institution of higher learning.This is what draws the huge donors who want their names associated with surgery units, cancer research wards, business schools, etc.
All sports are subserviant to academics. Football is great entertainment for students, alums, and walmart wolverines, and is a nice recruiting tool for getting undergrads. The cyclical nature of UM sports teams winning won't make or break Michigan's admission rates or the pocket books of its donors.
Academics definitely would prefer UM to be sucessful in all sports including football, but don't lose sleep over it if they don't.
The frustration for many UM alums over 40, and perhaps some of the Regents, is that DB is trying to turn every home game into a Super Bowl, when what makes college football great is that it is not the Super Bowl. This does not diminish the high marks he gets for improving all of the athletic facilites
|1 week 1 day ago||The point was big donations are not tied into football||
Also the secondary point was grad schools are where reputations of universities are made.
The year old story helped support that flow of posts. No need to snarky.
|1 week 1 day ago||Huge UM donation||
In case you are wondering why Krazy Jims had to move his Blimpy Burgers. It is funny that the story shows a picture of UM football fans, yet Munger made no appropriations for athletics or undergraduate studies. Most big time donors want UM to be like Stanford and the Ivies academically, not like Alabama.
Stanford is actually an interesting role model for UM athletics and academics in many ways. Unfortunately the commercialization of college football, and now basketball, make this very difficult for the universities.
|1 week 1 day ago||The reality is||
if guys like Ross, Wilpon, etc don't like UM's President for ANY reason and don't contribute big dollars, then that President is in trouble. Not sure that is the case yet, but from what I have heard Schlissel may need to tone down the perceived Ivy League snobbery to keep people happy. He is a very smart and I'm sure has figured, or will figure, it out. Doesn't mean he or the Regents will be a lap dog to DB.
To suggest that success in UM's football program, compared to academia, is essential to the University's future sucess is nonsense. I'd be surprised to hear if anyone who has graduated from any of UM's grad schools, where UM makes its national reputation, would place winning football championships on such a pedestal.
If one believed this really were the case, Brandon and Hoke should be fired immediately and $aban should be hired.

Many of his partners are also B school graduates. Interesting fact is that Ross's uncle, Max Fischer is the benefactor whose name adorns OSU's Business School.
If someone had a good academic experience that helped them become very, very successful, it's only natural that when they get older they want to leave a legacy where they spent some of the happiest years of their lives. Michigan and other top institutions are masterful at culling these relationships. These relationship advisors make good dough doing this - and some aren't even alums.
I don't think the RichRod years, and maybe the Hoke years, will jeopardize this process at a great institution such as UM. I would be more worried if our Bus school, Med school, law school, Engin school, etc dropped THEIR performaces and stopped producing the real leaders and best.

http://www.freep.com/article/20140718/NEWS06/307180095/mark-schlissel-fireworks-michigan-stadium ironically this Freep article seems more balanced.
Those who are offended by the Administration's views on the DB/ football team, should turn your attention to the Regents who voted against the fireworks. Bernstein and other's made some pretty biting comments.
|1 week 2 days ago||The concept of UM being much more than Saturday afternoons||
is VERY Duderstatian. In fact he said this. He was a very philosophical leader and did not care much about public opinion, something missing in most leaders today. This allowed him to advance Michigan in race, gender, and sexual orientation equality; modernize the campus; and improve research critical to grad schools.
While he probably preferred the marching band to the football team, under his tenure we did enjoy Rose Bowl and Final four trips.
I've read that he wishes that students were as passionate about social issues as they are about athletics.
Probably realistic to think Schlissel, an academic coming from Brown, has some of the same thoughts.
|1 week 2 days ago||Michigan isn't in the national spotlight?||
By the way there are also sports besides Michigan football that are representing the university exceedingly well ; )
Despite the worst 7 year stretch of football in memory, inflation adjusted donations have never been higher to UM than during the past few years. It may change the paltry dollars we sports fans contribute, but the big dollar players have, and will continue to contribute.
Al Glick loves this football team, and will do so through tough times, as all loyal alums do. I don't know Stephen Ross but the last 7 years didn't seem to quell his financial contributions.
What is probably true is that the big dollar donors that are also very passionate about football have Brandon's ear, and some offer "advice". I doubt they are contributing less because they are not satisfied with Hoke's performance.
The big money usually comes from older folks who have perspective, not like many sports bloggers, who live and die vacariously with M football.

Will be interesting to see how he does at Washington. His work at Boise St. was impressive and fun to watch.
|1 week 2 days ago||Some perspective||
UM athletic budget $137,000,000.
UM health system budget $3,300,000,000.
It's great that our athletic department operates at a surplus and provides us with entertainment, but our new President has better things to do than have an opinion on fireworks.
|1 week 5 days ago||Using the footings demanded by Fielding H Yost?||
What a visionary, or nut, he was to think football would become so popular, not long after many college Presidents wanted to ban the sport, so as to put a second deck on the Big House.
|1 week 5 days ago||He's great when he is on WTKA||
At his age he tells it like it is, but tempered with a UM passion. Like Bo and Brady, you can tell he is a quality old school individual.
|1 week 5 days ago||DB has really set a high bar for athletics in all sports||
These facilites are very impressive. I don't know how needed they are, but there appears to be no shortage of big money alums who are happy to foot the bill.
In truth UM had been leap frogged by other universities, most notably OSU, and now it looks like we are back to setting the pace. Once the Edwards Brothers property is bought and those athletic facility improvements are made, we truly will be leaders in facilities across the board.
Hopefully better facilities will mean better coaches and athletes, leading to more M wins : )
