I was sitting in the corner…

I was sitting in the corner very close to where Hayes caught that ball and almost left because it was so hot and we were so inept. But I had brought a young nephew, who had never been to The Big House and he was having a blast, so I thankfully stuck it out to entertain him.

Sort of like the finishes of the last three Red Wings games - this is why I don't bet on sports or leave games early.

Welcome back Jakob. Looking…

Welcome back Jacob!    SCTV hockey movie to entertain the UM/ Red Wing puck nuts here who need a laugh.

Carl Eskine has passed away…

Carl Eskine has passed away too. The last surviving member of the" Boys of Summer" those fondly remembered Brooklyn Dodgers teams of the late 1940s to mid-1950s, Erskine died Tuesday at a hospital in his hometown of Anderson, Ind. He was 97.

Seeing those teams with Jackie Robinson at Ebbets Field must have been something.

I could be arguing in my spare time...

Yeah Raymond is good…

Yeah Raymond is good offensively and feisty. He's also like a -17 in the +/-. I don't know if DeBrincat is hurt or what but they need more scoring from him and all around grit in front of the net. Playoff hockey is all about wanting it more and ugly goals.

Consistent goaltending would help but that wasn't the problem yesterday.

We'll see what at happens at Pittsburgh...

Guards Dillingham and…

Guards Dillingham and Sheppard will be lottery picks. Kentucky is in for a major slide.  You can't win with just all American HS freshmen when you are playing against 23 year olds. It will be interesting who goes and who stays at UConn, who have shown the new blueprint on how to win in college.

The transfer portal and NIL have ruined the team building strategy that most b10 teams currently use. I wouldn't be surprised if Dusty May and his aggressive recruiting staff  do well, at least in the b10.

Without Kane, who we lucked…

Other than Kane, who we lucked out on, and Larkin this offense looks like Wisconsin basketball.

if they crap in their pants at Pittsburgh, I get rid of LaLonde who can't get this team to perform in big games. Really Yzerman is to blame but he is God in Detroit so he is safe. When can we bring Trey Augustine up?

Tigers score 3 in the 9th so…

Tigers score 3 in the 9th so far against one of baseball's best closers and take the lead 4-3 over the Pirates. Strange series. stranger game going on right now. This is why I don't bet on sports...Now 5-3.

Just incredible. Most…

Just incredible. Most everything in our universe is math and physics related and mankind is pretty miniscule in the bigger scheme of things. Great to see people come together to have this awesome experience of totality. Now back to not being nice to each other.

Never get tired reminiscing with this 50th WRIF anniversary interview with Jim “JJ” Johnson and George Baier,  who supplied “the crew” — a variety of character voices like Dick the Bruiser and George Swell and Al Foul-Line.

the Sunoco gas stations sold twelve different Detroit Tiger glasses that featured Cash, Don Wert, Mickey Lolich, Joe Sparma, Dave Wickersham, Bill Freehan, Willie Horton, Denny McLain, Don Demeter, Al Kaline, Dick McAuliffe, and Hank Aguirre.

Each plastic glass has a portrait of the player with a facsimile signature and on the back a much smaller image of the player in action. The Cash glass shows Storm’n Norman twirling two bats over his head as he always did on the on the deck circle before approaching home plate.

Remember when Al was doing the color commentary on WJR? He was old school thought it was the fall of civilization when Steve Dahl led Disco Demolition night in between games of the double header at Comiskey, and the second game had to be forfeited due to rioters ripping up the field.

Stormin' Norman Cash was my guy. Effortless swing with enormous power and just a real character/ jokester.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team (11-0, 2-0 Big Ten) will host No. 1 Maryland (9-1, 2-0 Big Ten) for its Pride Game on Saturday (March 30) at 12:30 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The showdown will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

Notes

• Michigan is the No. 2 ranked team in the latest edition of the IL Women/IWLCA Weekly Poll (March 25). The ranking is the highest in program history as the Wolverines are out to an 11-0 start and just two wins away from tying the its best-ever start; U-M went 13-0 to start the 2019 season. The Wolverines are one of three undefeated teams left in the nation as No. 7 Loyola (9-0) and No. 16 Yale (8-0) have not lost a contest.

Not only was the 1989…

Not only was the 1989 Illinois basketball team their best team ever, they handily beat us at Assembly Hall in January 89 and on Glen Rice senior day, they dominated us by 16 points ( game wasn't that close) at Crisler.

Then the way we beat the NCAA semis with the Sean Higgins last second put back crushed their souls. I nearly stroked out at that game at the Kingdome and the Rumeal Robinson finals were not much better.

So I get why they don't like us ( along with the whole Gary Moeller stuff). Also they really haven't had much success when it comes to NCs:

Seems like Michigan Medicine…

Seems like Michigan Medicine is looking to expand their footprint in SE Michigan or just find relatively low cost areas close to Ann Arbor.

The UMHS Specialty Pharmacy mail order pharmaceutical facility on Joy Road in Dexter ( where the old Thomson-Shore book manufacturing plant was) is an example. Funny the old Edwards Brothers book manufacturing plant on State Street is the new site of the UM indoor track.

I think the old KMart HQ allows Michigan Medicine to attract workers/patients to a more attractive/convenient location than going to ever more congested and expensive Ann Arbor.

Really radical idea : UM should buy part of Ann Arbor Pioneer. The Ann arbor school system faces a huge budget deficit  and severly shrinking overall attendance of the three high schools (Pioneer/Huron/ and Skyline).

Another option would be the…

Another option would be the site Briarwood Mall. Forget condos or whatever at the demolished Sears. Buses run up and down State already. Hotels and restaurants there. Easy on /off of I-94.

As an interim rink couldn't…

As an interim rink couldn't the women start out using the nearby Ann Arbor Ice Cube since the  USA National development team moved out to Plymouth?

Ferry Field now just a seldom used track and could be a long term site for a new hockey rink. The new indoor track by the lacrosse field is beautiful. It would cool to somehow use the Albert Kahn designed Ferry Field gate for an ice rink entrance.

The plaque about Jesse Owens' amazing feat on May 25, 1935 setting three world records and tying another at the Big Ten meet at Ferry could be accommodated somewhere close by. And get a plaque for Willis Ward too!

Owens tied the world record of 9.4 seconds in the 100-yard dash, then had a long jump of 26 feet, 81/4 inches, ran the 220-yard dash in 20.3 seconds and the 220-yard low hurdles in 22.6 seconds for Ohio State. That feat is amazing enough — but Owens did all four in the span of 45 minutes.

I will be happy really just…

I will be happy really just to see a team play proper fundamental basketball. The wins will take care of themselves.

Reed and Tschetter are the two guys I'd love to come back. They seem like good kids and with proper coaching and some line up depth, they could be solid college players.

The way the NCAA rules, or lack of them are, really benefits how quickly May can reform next year's M squad. It's like the Seinfeld routine where we are just rooting for the jerseys, not the players necessarily, because way they can come and go each year.

Also coach Beilein,…

Also coach Beilein, understands leadership and real team building, on and off the court, like few others. May seems to get it as well. JB was interviewed recently by Michigan Medicine two weeks ago ( lots of simple wisdom here).

"...and if Beilein's…

"...and if Beilein's involved with the program he will probably suggest that May look at Saddi Washington, Lavall Jordan, and Luke Yaklich."

On a weekend where pretty much every team I was rooting for lost,  the hiring of May with some Beilein "help" puts a huge smile on my face.

The more I learn about May the more I love the hire.

Nice season but how can you…

Nice season but how can you not foul Kansas' center Jackson when you are up in regulation and Kansas has to make threes to get back into the game?!!

Put a 6 '6" 48% FT shooter (ugly release) on the line and you are giving up 1 point max per possession rather than threes.

Nice to see Juwan there.

Went to see the Wings beat the Isles last night. Great to see Larkin come back from injury and score  two goals.  Andrew Copp was the number one star. Compher was good as well. How blessed are we to watch these Wolverines at the terrific Yost Arena and see the start of some great NHL careers.

When I saw the forum post I…

When I saw the forum post I was hoping this would be a commentary on Phil's interview with Sam Webb this morning on WTKA.

He and John B are as good a persons as you will find. Great mentors to young men. Stand up guys who will never embarrass the school off the court and are universally respected. Sam was blown away by Phil's love of these kids and perspective and still wanting to help the kids now and in the future, even after he has likely been canned by the Warde, via Juwan.

I would love to see Phil in a support role to our next coach but don't think that is likely. Thanks Juwan and Phil for your efforts. Sad it didn't work out. Sincere best wishes to where life takes you.

My family lived on Muirland near Clarita many years ago. Occasionally I drive by the old neighborhood and marvel at the beautiful Tudor homes in Sherwood Forrest/Palmer Woods/ University District (and see that the Bishops residence / John Salley home is for sale). The first great athlete I saw was when Pershing's Spencer Haywood played at Mumford, where my Mom taught.
