|2 weeks 2 days ago||Let's not forget the B1G is terrible this year||
Burke played in a loaded B1G and dominated. Was great as a frost and elite as soph. Walton has been elite for 6 weeks...
Now there is something to be said for being hot at the right time and being clutch. Walton could still have a couple chapters left in his story. If he gets 2 banners this season then he will be in elite company.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Walton and Irvin were high ranked recruits||
Walton if anything has under performed outside of the last 2mths (Better late than never though). Irvin was Mr Indiana I believe.
Guess I just don't think there is any reason this team should have been bad early in the season
|7 weeks 5 days ago||This tells me with harbaugh we are moving to tier 1a||
This tells me that with Harbaugh we are back in the game at high end recruiting. We are not blowing out other elite programs but batting even with them which is the first step to actually being able to beat them instead of getting beat in nov / bowl game.
Hoping Harbaughs scheme and QB whispering have UM playing better than its recruiting rankings over the last 3 years. Which would mean playoff. Wouldn't hurt to have elite 1sr Rd WRemerge from all these recruits and for somehow the OL to take the next step. I'm confident that the RBs in the team can get it done with a good OL. I'm a believer in Broen being ably to field good/great defenses. I think his scheme alone keeps the floor high on D performance.

I have been dozens of times to Santa Cruz where my family is from. I have probably 30+ cousins down there.
Santa Cruz is a fun city. Been for carnival which was crazy. My experience may be different to most since I could pass as a local and had plenty of people showing me around.
Food and drink is dirt cheap and the women are beautiful. Also like the combination of a major city, grittiness of a 2-3rd world country, and vibrant culture. Would recommend it to anyone. Just don't go expecting to lounge in an all inclusive resort and infinite pool. Sure they have those but that's not really the point.
An American should avoid drinking tap water as well. Stick to Beer. Pacena is the brew of choice. Sometimes I can even order it here in NYC.
Lots of eco-tourism sprouting up now as it has rain forest and mountain terrain.

Do you all think we see something new on O with Peppers?
I feel like to a must since WS very likely gets knocked out of this game at some point. Pepper plays have been very predictable as of late. Thoughts on what we might see?
I liked the Peppers hand off then reverse to McDoom or Chesson. Think we will need 3-4 BIG RPS wins on O to flip the field and give us scoring chances.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||I think UM QB will decide it||
Speight plays entire game: 24-17 UM
O'korn playing longer than 3qtrs: 10-27 OSU
I really think the QB for UM determines this game. UMs D will old its own but can only do so much if the O is not up to task.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||Don't like our chances running the ball||
Don't like our chances running the ball if high winds nullify passing games. We have not run well when it's obvious. See MSU and Iowa games up with 2mins left.
I'm hoping weather clears up so O'korn can air it out some and keep the D honest.
|19 weeks 20 hours ago||O'korn scramble more on 3rd and short now||
To me this just opens up the possibility for 3-4wide sets that start in shotgun only to scramble for 5yds on 3 and 4. Just having this to keep drives alive will be huge. We know his tendency is to run. Maybe this will help some. Can't be on every 3rd down but a few timely scrambles could go a long way.
|19 weeks 2 days ago||Just like MSU. Can't get the 1st to ice the game||
Can't get a 1st when we have to run the ball
Speight missed long ball the entire difference in the game. 0-3. Chesson with a couple drops too
|20 weeks 19 hours ago||Is OL good enough vs OSU potentially Bama and Clem?||
Is the OL going to be good enough against OSU and potentially Bama or CLEM in the playoffs though?
My worry is that new and improved Speight will not have time to make any of these intermediate / deep throws before getting sacked...
We have yet to show much of a screen game (what few we have done have worked well) or quick 3-step-drop game so far (haven't needed to) so not sure what we will do to "slow down the rush" when we play the ELITE teams mentioned above.
Note, despite the stats I am not lumping in Wisc with OSU and certaintly not Bama and CLEM. Those 3 have another level of pass rush IMO.I'm not sure we can line-up and run straight at them either.
Can Speight open up a D with his arm at that level? Guess we will find out. I think the O is good enough right now to beat OSU (to get 30pts) not sure about Bama and CLEM.
|26 weeks 6 days ago||Needs 5-7 total TDs (multiple against OSU) and lead nation TFL||
It's all about highlight plays
Peppers needs 5-7 TDs IMO. If he got a return, catch, and rushing TD vs OSU for example that would get him in. He'll need a signature moment.
Leading the country in TFL is also a must. I think he will get that though. So really comes down to the TDs.
|27 weeks 1 day ago||FB probably is a decent redshirt position||
FB probably is a good RS position since there is little risk they will ever go pro early.
|27 weeks 2 days ago||Yup. UM most be able to beat OSU in the trenches||
UM most be able to beat or draw OSU in the trenches to have any chance. They have way to much skill for or LBs to handle in space.
Going to take big time Improvement to make that game any different from last year. Best chance is if we can somehow run the ball to keep them off the field and have the DL do enough damage to get them in 3rd and longs to break up some drives. They will get big plays though.
Considering UCF and Colorsdo held their own in the interior I'm worried. Again, worried for OSU that is.
I see no chance UM loses to anyone other than MSU and OSU on the schedule. Rest of the B1G OLs and offense are not good enough.
|27 weeks 2 days ago||If you are a 5th year senior skill player||
Than you are probably not NFL material and we'd probably rather an early entry bound junior be playing. Sounds harsh but those are just facts. We probably want as many NFL bound juniors in the starting lineup as possible.
If we want to beat Bama, OSU and be playoff or B1G title program than we can't build a team like Wisconsin...or even MSU. Yes I know MSU best OSU in a fluke last year. We see what happens when they play Bama.
The best players must play. Best athletes must play early to get reps and groomed to be potential stars. If they don't get there then the next crop of recruits will be nipping at their heels to try all over again.
I mean if you look at OSU skill players we can't expect gritty, well coached, but inferior athletes to beat them. They will get beat to the edge or over the top. Out "athleted" if you will.
Only OL Really consistently could use RS. Even now Frosh QBs are stepping in day 1 and doing well. Given Harbaughs pro style scheme probably best that we don't have Frosh starters so they can understand the playbook though.
Im personally hoping there are 2-3 more Evans types emerging before Nov. Frosh that you just have to play or start bc they are too good. Need that kind of talent to make playoff. Beat OSU.
|29 weeks 1 day ago||I do worry about blitzing LBs with short passing game||
We know teams are going to be scared of our DL and get the ball out quick. Guess it will be on CBs to stay tight in coverage and force PDs. Safeties will need to clean up well to avoid big plays.
Definitely think we are getting lots of TFLs. If the running game on O can get going TOP can be our best friend. I just don't see a lot of sustained drives for opposing teams, probably give up some chunk plays though. lots of punt returns for peppers that's for sure.
|39 weeks 5 days ago||Dempsey||
I think at minimum Demps will be a late sub FWD that we bring on when we need a goal in Russia. His playmaking ability is still second to none on the team. I don't think his scrappiness in and around the box will go away.
I don't think he will have the legs to go a full 90 though. Not sure he will have that for WCQ even.
If Demps can start and go 60 in Russia then I'm all for it. He's earned the benefit of the doubt imo until 2 Fwds are clearly better. Right now only Woods is on that path to eclipse him. Woods I agree was the Big Big winner.
I think Bradley needs to embrace the beckerman role and go full on D Mid with limited possession duities. Problem is Bradley is not that great defensively. He just runs around a lot often times with limited purpose. Beckerman for all his physical short comings puts him self in good positions. Unfortuantely, even that is not good enough now bc he is so slow and lacks any possession skills.
Beckerman should not suit up ever again unless its a concacaf bottom dweller.
|39 weeks 5 days ago||agree 100%. No way WC squad be that young||
Klinsi won't even play Nagbe and Pulisic in Copa at home. No way he starts or gives serious minutes CCV, Miazga, Zelalem, Green. All would be fortunate to start in Gold Cup next year.
None of the latter names could really do much at the US youth levels let alone senior in 2 years.
I think Ecuador starting line up will largely be the WC starters. I hope replacements for Jones and Bradley are available or at least to push them bc I consider our central midfield weak.
Back line is set until WC. Only changes if a LB emerges which would be great so Johnson can move to midfield.
FWDs will be strong, I hope Altidore is limited to a Dempsey backup from now on. Wood better stay ahead of him with Morris actually coming on in a like for like with Wood starting next year.
I worry Klinsi loves altidore though...
I too suspect Guzan will not be the goalie. After LB that is priroity #1 IMO.

|51 weeks 1 day ago||i agree||
From O'Korn I saw happy feet way too quickly. Granted its very early but O'Korn isn't the Frosh or even RS Frosh. He has multiple years in college.
He did not seem as poised. It worked out most of the time bc he got yards with his legs but QB play like that makes the OL look worse and doesn't give playmakers a chance downfield.
I'm sure he'll get bettet as time goes on but Speight looked like he won Rd 1 to me.
|1 year 16 weeks ago||or at RB, or at WR, or at TE...||
spread even the playing field. 1 on 1 anything can happen and thats all those O based themselves around. Creating 1 on 1 matchups. actually 2 on 1 if you count the QB.
|1 year 16 weeks ago||good||
Will put more pressue on UM coaches to be able to gear OUR D to stop spread offenses. MD will be a nice tune up for OSU most years. That makes OSU, IU, and MD all running spread in our own divison. We'll be forced to react if we want to go to Indy.
More Athletes on D please. Sorry, I just disagree with Brian on this topic wrt LBs. Instincts are obviously critical but just being a stud athlete can clean up some mistakes (as well as magnifiy errors yes I know).
I'm fine with pro-style O with Harbaugh and turning away from spreads. But we can't ignore the spread when it comes to playing Defense. OSU is/will be the best or close to the best at it as long as Meyer is there.
|1 year 16 weeks ago||Cook > any UM Pro Style QB since?||
MSU has had NFL caliber O talent as of late.
|1 year 16 weeks ago||+10000||
I agree 100% and was going to post basically the same thing.
Not sure anyone can convince me that you need A++ talent to be ELITE on O and run a pro-style. Same is not true for Spread game. Examples of the latter are plenty.
Luckily at UM we have the potential for A++ talent on O (still ligh years away from that - see OL, RBs).
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Goes back to recruiting||
Ppl get mad but we recruit just shooters. More to the game then that. Great when 3s fall you don't need to rebound or play d then. When they don't you need a plan b.
We don't even recruit good ball handlers. Literally just shooters and incredibly weak under skilled 4s and 5s. Wagner is a 3 at a real ball program.
UM Built like a mid major thru and thru.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||Way too soft||
Beilein's best team had Burke, Mcgary, and JMO. Three tough hustle players. Now we just have a bunch of guys who are good at horse. Yes I know those 3 were talent but there toughness was what made the difference.
Zero rebounding and zero D. It's ok to recruit well rounded players and not just shooters who are young for their grade. Constantly look like boys among men. Team is set up like its a mid major...not a legit power program.
|1 year 18 weeks ago||Beat OSU and we go to rose bowl||
MSU will beat Iowa and go to the playoff. Rose or committee will take a Michigan team drag off an OSU win over Iowa. There biggest win if they lost to MSU is NU. Been there done that. Michigan has 1.5 losses in the eyes of committee too.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||Non-lewis DBs have just been OK though||
Non Lewis DBs have not been spread out onto island as much either...so IMO will be easy to avoid Lewis for IU.
If UM DL straight blows people up its all moot bc Non-Lewis DBs can hang with IU WRs for the first few seconds. IU knows that though, I imagine they get the bal out real quick and hope to break something. I agree they won't consistently move the ball much this way. But they are goos at O. They will break some.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||its not a great match-up for UMs D IMO||
I think UM's secondary (outside of Lewis) could get exposed a bit.
Key will be consistent DL pressue on obvious passing downs makeing the DBs look good. Safeties have given up some plays in the running and passing game (and taking some away too) as of late.
Honestly UMs best D could be there O. IU has not been able to stop the run much...but UMs run has regressed some as of late (Minn has a good D but Rutgers does not). Hopefully the OL has a good day and the RBs are starting to get healthy. I think the O could keep IU off the field with special teams giving us good field position on O (and D).
Just can't let special teams or the O give away any points. this UM O is not ready for a shoot out.
I would say its defniitely a classic UM game to lose sort of situation. IU is capable of stealing one though.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||exactly||
Love me some Peppers. But the hype is getting to be much. He is almost at the Norfleet level.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Peppers not "Generational Talent". He is 1st rd NFL pick||
Great article. Great kid. UM lucky to have him. Just hope we get more which doesn't seem to unrealistic to me. Homer goggles aside.
I mea neg away but lets not over-hype Peppers. Will get Heisman talk next season bc we are MICHIGAN and he plays 5 positions for us.
He is great and will be a 1st rd pick after Jr year. That just makes him a once per year talent in CFB.
This just shows how weak the talent - true playmaker talent - at UM over the last 10 years.
The elite of CFB (Bama, LSU, OSU, USC in the day, even UF on D, FSU..etc) have a player like Peppers on the roster every season. They just don't need him to play QB/WR/RB plus CB/LB/Safety bc they already have good players at that position. Lack of depth and playmakers on this team is why Peppers seems like a man among boys on our team.
FWIW, Denard is/was just as talented as Peppers and last I checked he's the same generation. Damn near every other year LSU has a DB equally a freak. Bama probably every 3 years. TN had Eric Berry. Myles Jack at UCLA can do it all. McCaffery at Standford I'm sure can play 5 positions if needed. Hargraves at UF. Braxton Miller at OSU (if they would use him). Honey Badger..etc..etc
Hopefully with Harbaugh we have 1st rd NFL talent starting in the back seven every season. Then we'll be like LSU, Bama, OSU, FSU, UF..
