My son continues to rave…

My son continues to rave about how amazing the weight room is.  I would highly recommend the Big Man camp for anyone with a kid playing offense or defense line.  Warm-up in the big house, nfl style combine activities on the outdoor practice field, in the weight room (wish they would have shown the box jump stairs in the video) and then technique drills in the indoor practice field.  One on one drills in the big house to wrap the day.  Best 25$ I have ever spent and a great experience for my son!

The writeup's from yesterday…

The writeup's from yesterday to today seem to be at odds with each other.  Seth's take from yesterday "There were a bunch of positive reads for McNamara in this game despite Michigan being as QB givey as ever, simply because Washington kept making the handoff the correct decision."  The take today "When they ran apparent RPOs against Washington the decision-making often seemed predetermined."  Hopefully the UFR will offer more detail to support one over the other (i.e. was McNamara making reads accurately or were the reads in fact predetermined).

Would love to take my son to…

Would love to take my son to the Big House for a game.  Very sorry about your fathers condition.  I commend you on finding a great way to celebrate/honor your father, raise awareness concerning the disease and raise funds to help others suffering with the disease.  Thank you!

Cool Story Bro

I had a highschool friend that was recruited by Coach Mattison and after the UCF game this year my friend saw him and yelled out "Hey Coach DeBord!".  Coach Mattison looked with a look of confusion but still came over to shake his hand.  As he walked away with his wife I could hear her say say "Did you hear what he called you?".  I had to correct my firend afterward to his horror.  Thought it a fitting cool story bro for the appreciation thread.

Two sons

Long time reader but this topic was so near and dear I decided to finally post.  I am a huge football fan and my boys see that every year.   They see that some of my closest friends are teammates from HS.  I did not suffer any head injuries during my playing days but did go through mulitple knee surgeries.  I understand the risks of playing the game which is why i am not actively pushing them toward football.  Tha is a decision i want them to make on their own.  When they ask about it i tell them that if they ever decide to play they WILL learn proper fundamentals and use them or they will not be allowed to play.  Only time will tell if they will decide if it is a sport they would like to try.

Off topic of recruiting and cool story bro but...

I got a chance to meet Coach John Beilein last night at a Big Brothers and Big Sisters charity event.  He was very personable, taking photos with everyone before dinner and taking a moment after every photo session to speak briefly with each person.  I thoroughly enjoyed his speech at the dinner and if that was even a glimpse of how an in-home or on-campus visit goes, I can see how he is winning over recruits and parents with his personality and his passion to teach his players how to be leaders and men.

Wishing I was home

Had to travel for work but did celebrate Thursday before I left.  My two year old told me "Happy Birthday to Fathers Day" and repeated it to me on my wake up call this morning.  Hopefully they save me some of the German chocolate cake we had before I left.

Unicode Conversion

Flew into Atlanta yesterday and now performing unicode conversion for PeopleSoft Finance and Cognos reporting applications, obviously with enough time to get a quick mgoblog fix.  On a bad note, missing fathers day with my family this weekend...bad timing for the prod conversion.

Michigan State "spin" on recruiting

It appears that Mark Dantonio is putting a nice spin on the MSU recruiting class

http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2012/06/mark_dantonio_on_spartans_2013.html

"We're being very, very selective. You can't make mistakes."

I know it is an mlive link but thought it fit into this thread.

No offense but

when do we stop saying just wait until next year or two years from now?  I am not a RR hater.  In fact, I really want him to succeed.  I am getting tired of towing the line with "wait until 20XX".   I see the progress on offense.  I do not see where the defense is going to make a huge leap to next year, but I could be wrong.  I did see some some positives today but positives alone do not put a W in the Win column.

Makes me look at the goal line fumble

If we had not fumbled on the goal line we would have had a two touchdown adbantage and the defense did it's job by getting one or two stops during the game....just proving RR's quote over and over...."we are not good enough to play poorly and win".  We are getting closer though!

Some are getting the message

Big Will has found a way to contribute (i.e. lead blocking on goal line offense) while he is getting better at his primary position.  I think the coaching staff has sent a message to the players that they have to compete (and show it in practice) to play.  It sucks that the transfers impact APR, but (in my opinion) it is better to free up the scholarship for an athlete that will compete than to have it sitting on the shelve for 4-5 years.  I wish him luck at his next stop.  Hopefully this will be the last defection of the year.

Lets Go Blue!

I hope that RR gets the job done this year.  I would hate to see a coaching change and even greater risk to the APR with transfers etc (maybe on of theose other factors that Brandon will be considering as well).  I am looking for a big day tomorrow.  Go Blue!

Dang!

I was thinking neg bang meltdowns were a myth and i was oh-so close to witnessing one real time.

Question

I thought I read that Denard again went against the two's defense and Tate again went against the one's defense.  The spring game was public and the last one was semi-public but I was assuming at some point it would be one's versus one's.  If Denard is running against the two's, does that inflate his stock a little?  Are they putting Tate in more pressure situations to accentuate ball control and better decision making when the plays break down?  Sorry to rehash the same question raised from the spring game.

You have peaked my curiosity

This was a shock to me today as I had not heard or seen any rumors before yesterday's scrimmage notes.  Anything you can share?

According to my friend the internet

There is an article quoting his dad, Butch, confirming ankle dislocation, possible ligament damage and broken bone.  I definitely feel for the kid and I wish him a speedy recovery.  One more thing for the team to rally around. He will be missed this year but I hope that we are all pleasantly surprised by his replacement....whover that may be.

I think it is a good sign

Throughout this entire helmet debate, i have not heard one rumor that Tate wants to pick up his football and go elsewhere.  If they are truly competing then that is nothing but positive for UM football.  It does make me excited to see the product that is placed on the field Sept 4th.

Thanks

I did want to know and I appreciated the answer to my question.

Hi I'm Earth, have we met?

Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways.  I will try and refrain from posting stupidity in the future.

Not sure why I was negged

I clearly remember watching side-by-sides of the game and we got screwed on that one.  Time had run out and as I recall coming out of that game, home team guys are no longer in charge of the clock.  In my mind this stick out as one of the worst calls against UM in the last decade and thought I would share.  I have followed the blog for a long time and recently started trying to contribute.  Any insight to the negging would be appreciated.

Where is the phantom second debacle

Jeff Smoker throws a TD pass to TJ Duckett on 4th and goal with 1 second left to lift the Spartans past the Wolverines 26-24.  Obviously time had run down on the clock.  In all of my maturity, I promptly proclaimed the party at my house to be over and had fits of rage sprinkled in with hours of sulking for the remainder of the day

I was wondering the same thing

Was the question specific to Tate or was RR referring to an incident off the field (i.e. website wall of shame discussed on the blog).  RR appears to be keeping the pressure on him.  I hope that the pressure has positive results.

I live in BC.

Thanks for the 800 number.  Seems like the kzoo river will never catch a break, between the raw sewage overflows and now this oil spill.  The hits just keep on coming.

I think the story is relevant

because I feel it could turn out to be another UM football recruit under RR that could go through the same public magnifying glass that Demar Dorsey endured.  I understand there is a difference between the two, one was convicted and one was not....but I think the heart of the issue was character and traditional Michigan standards.  I am interested in following this because he is considered to be a "sleeper" type recruit and if this "blows up" the same way it did for DD will he be able to make it to campus.  Could he have done without the link to the Seaholm article...yes, but all articles referenced are public knowledge.  I see this as a case where Brian is getting in front of a potential issue with the recruiting class.

"Let's not forget Michigan is

"Let's not forget Michigan is under NCAA scrutiny right now. A possible "scandal" surrounding an athlete who used LifeSkills to artificially inflate his GPA to qualify is not a risk the University should take."

How would there be a scandal if the NCAA Clearnghouse approved him?  Isn't this just a case of Michigan's academic standards being higher than the NCAA minimum?  I hope that RR and admissions are on the same page now.  I think  it is outrageous that we would offer a kid, let him sign and then deny him after he did everything he had to do to become eligible.  Good luck to Demar, I hope you land squarely on both feet!

If anti glare technology will

If anti glare technology will help out with "Cath the damn ball" syndrome, then I am all for it!

I think Tommy Boy said it

I think Tommy Boy said it best....."Forget it, I quit, I can't do this anymore, man. My head's about to explode. My whole life sucks. I don't know what I'm doing... I don't know where I'm going. My dad just died.  We just shafted a recruit. We just killed Bambi. I'm out here getting my ass kicked and every time I drive down the road. I wanna jerk the wheel INTO A GODDAMNED BRIDGE EMBANKMENT."

I am upset and embarressed

I am upset and embarressed because the University of Michigan with all of our integrity and tried and true processes, extended an offer to a student athlete to join the Michigan family and at (what seems to be) the last minute the University is leaving him out in the cold with (based on the interview) very little information or direction on the situation.  It is bad for the student athlete and it is bad for the image of the University.  I am a firm believer that if you give someone your word, you stick by it.

Besides the fact he is being

Besides the fact he is being shafted by admissions, what does it mean he has not heard from the coaches?  He just hasn't heard either way if he is in or not?  I hope that the coaches are walking he and his family through this process.

I hope to see him in the winged helmet soon!

Can't say I would blame him,

Can't say I would blame him, but with Journey's "Don't Stop Believing''" on constant repeat, Lord help me....but I gotta believe this is a comeback year

Did he happen to mention

Did he happen to mention anything about our defensive coordinator as well?  I am hoping he pans out too!

Best wishes to Jon.  I hope

Best wishes to Jon.  I hope that the images and triumphs of Brock Mealer will help keep his spirits high during this trying ordeal.  I wish him a speedy recovery!

To be fair, I referenced a

To be fair, I referenced a link that was already readily accessible from the links provided in the main post and I referenced it because I thought it germane to my reply.  There was probably no need to link the article (one for redundancy and two because it is innuendo) and I will keep that in mind in future posts.  The blind sided article referenced issues off the field (as a reason he may lose his senior season) and IF it is true, I hope that it is something very minor and not something that will stir the proverbial pot again like the signing of Demar.  Thank you for the constructive feedback.

Link in the comments of the Blind Sided article

I certainly hope that the person in question is not Shawn.  I really do not want to have another Dorsey-esque media frenzy about a recruit

http://www.seaholmhighlander.com/community/seaholm-high-school/801-student-caught-on-tape-breaking-into-lockers

I hope that everything works out for the kid!  Based on the articles, it looks like the kid is trying to pull himself up from a less than ideal situation and I will be rooting for him.

Agree with Magnus

If we are going to go through the process of cleaning up the atletic department, seems like we could add the admission process to the list as well.

I would hope that there is a process in place for the admissions office to weigh in on potential recruits before RR pulls the trigger with an offer.  To ensure all parties are informed.  RR an company can extend the scholarship knowing that the recruit has some work to do for admission and the athlete can choose to accept the scholarship and put the work in or make the choice to go elsewhere.

I do not want to believe that UM is extending scholarships and the athletes are assuming that as long as they clear the Clearinghouse they are in.  I do not like the trend(Witherspoon, Witty and possibly Dorsey)
