What's the best bet for What's the best bet for buying tickets to this? Can you buy individual games at the box office or do you have to buy the full session strip?
I stayed at the Millenium I stayed at the Millenium once - Nittany's dead on with his comment. Its $75 - $90 a room, but you get what you pay for. The Hilton Netherland Plaza is a nice hotel for ~$125/night. Beautiful hotel, 5 minute walk or so to the arena.
I've never heard of Smoq

I've never heard of Smoq either. Eli's is a bit out of the way (its a hole in the wall place, but is always mobbed), but is very good. Montgomery Inn is a 10 minute walk or so from the arena. I think it gets overshadowed by the new restaurant boom in Cincy, a lot of good places have opened in recent years. Montgomery Inn hasn't changed much in 20 years, there's just some new memorabilia on the walls. It could use an update in my eyes. The good news is that the ribs haven't changed either - they're still very good. Worth the trip.

Someone mentioned Taft's in Over the Rhine, its a good place to grab a beer if you have extra time. It used to be a church that was built in the 1800s - the building was literally falling over. $9 million later, the place is beautiful and they have great beer.

Right Call Heartbreaking to not get it, but it was the right call all the way. Gardner was badly banged up and we were without Gibbons. Overall, that's not a good recipe for overtime. I was surprised Hoke stuck with the 2-pt call after OSU called the time out though. Still the right call - Hoke has guts. I don't think I've ever been more proud of a team in a losing effort - they played their hearts out. The atmosphere around here has been pretty gloomy the past few weeks, but this program has bottomed. Good things are ahead...
Fair points, and I hope that Fair points, and I hope that we don't have to find out what a Borges offense looks like long-term. We've got a lot of young offensive line talent that will help us out long term. As nice as it is to have a Taylor Lewan emerge as a redshirt freshman, offensive linemen typically need more time to develop. The situation we have on the interior line where we have three underclassmen starting won't be happening two or three years from now. I'm with you on wide receiver concerns - I don't see anyone set to emerge there.

Long story short, with an adequate offense and a solid defense, I think we can be on MSU's level next year. OSU will take more time, but I think we can be there the year after that. A lot of the issues on offense are coaching related and hopefully they'll be addressed, but the youth points to the future direction of the program.
There are holes with Lewan,

There are holes with Lewan, Schofield, and Gallon gone - no doubt about that.  Gardner is back, and Fitz isn't a huge loss.  Fitz was put in a horrible position with this year's line, but he hasn't looked like the back we saw in 2011 this year or last year.  The interior line will take a big step up, as should Jake Butt.  The early playing experience will help them down the road.  All the young lineman will have another year in the system too.  I'm not saying the offense will be dynamic, but with a very good defense we don't need them to be great.

True, but the situation on

True, but the situation on offense reminds me of the defensive transition from 2010 to 2011.  Mattison deserves all the credit, but that defense likely would have taken a big step up no matter what given the youth on the roster.  I see this offense doing the same thing.  Frankly, I don't see how it could possibly get any worse than it is now.

We knew going into Hoke's tenure that "The Process" and the overall state of the depth chart at that time might put us in a position where we could regress this season.  Unfortunately, that happened and this season has been extremely painful.  Comparing this team to the stock market, I think we're approaching March 2009.  Almost everyone is negative - we'll never get out of this: the sky is falling and we're destined for another ten years in the backseat to OSU and MSU.  I don't see that happening - I think we're bottoming and we can expect sharp improvement from here.  All the young talent that Hoke and company have brought in are set to improve dramatically with an offseason of experience, and I think Ron's data supports that.

Thanks for putting this

Thanks for putting this together - it definitely helps to quantify something we've known all along.  It helps to further validate what Mattison has done while putting more fire on Borges.  As Ohio has shown, good coaches can develop their players and overcome that youth gap.  However, I think their players there in much better position for their offensive transition versus ours.  I hope Hoke realizes that his job is tied to Borges.  As a defensive-minded guy, he needs to have a top notch offensive coordinator that he can trust.

Another thing this data shows us: given the youth on the team and the caliber of talent Hoke has recruited, we should expect a massive leap up next year.

Definitely gotta stay for the

Definitely gotta stay for the band!  Frank Solich has done a great job turning that program around.  I think OU won two or three games each year when I was there, and the Bobcats have been to bowls several years in a row.  Now we just have to win one....

At this point, OSU would be

At this point, OSU would be wise to send the team (and the NCAA, more importantly) a message and dismiss Posey.  There's simply no excuse for knowingly taking money after already being suspended for it once.  Not to mention that one other time was during one of the most highly publicized black eyes in program history.  I'm not saying Fickell or Smith will actually follow through with it, but he's let his team down and the program needs to hold him accountable and set an example.

I grew up a Michigan fan in

I grew up a Michigan fan in Columbus (my Dad went to UM), and lived there for most of my life before starting my MBA at Ross about eighteen months ago.  There are certainly some things you'll have to watch out for, but Columbus is actually a good city in many respects.

The Bad:

  • Don't even bother turning on sports talk radio.  All they talk about is OSU 24/7.  Occasionally they'll take a break to talk about the Blue Jackets, but its almost all OSU
  • As a few people have mentioned, most alums and OSU fans in general are respectful.  I've had some great conversations with Buckeye fans about the rivalry, Bo & Woody, and what not.  That said, there are a fair share of jerks out there, but you won't hear much from them
  • There's no Michigan bar.  Usually you'll find a few scattered Michigan fans at the bar and around town (there are far more Michigan fans in Cbus than there are OSU fans in Michigan)

The Good:

  • Columbus is one of the few midwestern cities that is actually growing.  A big part of that is because the city has a wide radius and extends out to what would likely be suburbs in other metros.  There are a lot of nice neighborhoods, including the Short North, Victorian Village, German Village.  Dublin, Westerville, and Worthington are pretty nice suburbs.
  • The Arena District and Short North has a lot of nice bars.  Blue Jackets games are a lot of fun, and the Red Wings obviously make it to town regularly.  The city's AAA baseball team, the Clippers, has a great new stadium in the Arena District as well.  Definitely one of the nicest minor league parks I've been to.
  • As others have mentioned, you'll get all the Michigan games on the Big Ten Network.  All the Michigan coverage you got in Cleveland you'll have in Columbus
Its good that you're thinking

Its good that you're thinking about this now, but keep in mind that most people work for 3-5 years after undergrad before going back for their MBA.  It is extremely difficult to get into most top programs without work experience.  Be sure to snag a good internship or two while you're at VT.  Other than that, I agree with the other posters.  Keep the grades up, stay involved in extracurriculars, and prep hard for the GMAT.  The nice thing about the GMAT is that you can benefit significantly from preparation.  Plan on spending 3-6 months preparing for it.  The GMAT score is only one of many factors admissions considers, but it is important.  The average GMAT score at Ross is about 90th percentile, but with significant prep that kind of score is very possible.  Best of luck!

Ross MBA Class of 2011

While Devin isn't going to

While Devin isn't going to jump over Denard, it will be very interesting to see his progress in spring practice.  When Devin played last year, to me he looked like he just wasn't quite ready.  However, he definitely showed flashes: he can make some of the throws that Denard can't.  Hopefully a year with the team and a year in the weight room has paid off for Devin.  I think we'll see a big step up in his ability at spring practice.

No, its not true.  However,

No, its not true.  However, he did joke about changing it.  One of the first things Bo did upon arriving (according to "Bo's Lasting Lessons" is study Michigan's history and traditions.  I can't find exactly where it is in the book so I can't explain the whole story, but he joked with some people in the athletic department about changing it knowing it would get under their skin.

Hang in there, M&BWahoo.

Hang in there, M&BWahoo.  Calling each person individually takes a lot of time and they do break it down over several days.  I believe my call came on the third day after they started.  As hard as it is, try to stay off the MBA message boards and do something to take your mind off it.

Congrats, Zone Left!  I'm

Congrats, Zone Left!  I'm sure that's exciting and a huge relief.  Good luck at Ross!

I'm a current MBA2 at Ross,

I'm a current MBA2 at Ross, and remember how anxious I was hoping for the phone call from admissions.  Ironically, this coaching search seems to trigger that same level of anxiety!  The application process involves a lot of hard work, but that one phone call makes it all worth it.  Regardless of the outcome, you've been admitted to two great schools and I'll bet you have an excellent chance of getting into Ross.  Good luck!

No, its not.  Its something

Well if they were looking to

Well if they were looking to fly a plane down there that won't attract massive attention, that's a huge fail.  It certainly would be one hell of a coincidence.  I wonder when LSU is scheduled to return from the Cotton Bowl.  Tomorrow evening?

Jackson was fired with the

Jackson was fired with the rest of the assistants.  However, there's always the possibility that he could be rehired.  Given his standing with the program, one would think that's a pretty strong possibility.

Pelini's ties to tOSU is a

Pelini's ties to tOSU is a huge selling point in my opinion.  He would immediately have an understanding of the rivalry and the importance of The Game, and would likely understand the importance of tradition and the M's history.  I'm not sure why he would want to leave Nebraska, but he certainly seems like a viable candidate to look into.

That's definitely encouraging

That's definitely encouraging that he got to 62%.  I think he was at about 55% last year, so that's a sizable jump.  It might take a couple years, but he should definitely make it.

The only knock on Barry is that he couldn't stay healthy.  It would be interesting to see how healthy Lark would have stayed if he didn't play on Astroturf his entire career.  The old-school Astroturf was like playing on concrete, and had to really wear on him.  At one point in his career he actually offered to pay to have grass installed at the Reds ballpark.  Regardless, when healthy he was one of the best all-around shortstops of all time.

I'll bet you $500 that Denard

I'll bet you $500 that Denard starts and runs all over Mississippi State.  RR is just playing games with Mississippi State's coaches so they have to potentially prepare for two QBs.

Right - but it's a lot bigger

Right - but it's a lot bigger deal when its the head coach.  The national media cares about RR and his job security, but not about the defensive coaches.  The local media cares about the defensive staff, but they aren't going to beat it into the ground like they do with RR.

If RR is the coach,

If RR is the coach, announcing it before the bowl game can open up a big can of worms. Why, will you ask? Think about it. What the next question will be? What about Greg Robinson and the defensive staff? Are they coming back?

All he has to say is "We'll be evaluating individual position coaches at a later date."  Done.

I had a very similar

I had a very similar experience about three weeks ago.  It was the Tuesday after the Illinois game, and I was interviewing with a regional bank in New York state.  The guy I interviewed with played football in college and coached for a while before pursuing other careers, and was an OSU fan.  Out of the 40 minute interview, we spent five minutes talking about the company and the job and the rest of the time talking about Big Ten football, Bo, Woody, Tressel, and The Game.  My first interview question (pretty much verbatim) was:

"Assuming Michigan finishes 7-5, you're David Brandon and you're making a decision on the coaching staff.  What do you do?"

I gave him my opinion that I'd bring him back and replace the defensive staff.  He followed up with:

"Jim Harbaugh calls you on the phone and says he is available, but this season only.  Does your decision change?"

While the talk was about football, he was also checking to see if I'm able to make decisions for the long term and stick with them.  It definitely gives you a little bit of an "in" to be able to talk Michigan football (or sports in general), and situations like that in interviews aren't uncommon.

Think of the hours Rich Rod

Think of the hours Rich Rod works.  Think of all the emotion he puts into getting things right with the team.  He's passionate about the team and when you go through all the negativity he's gone thru at times, it only makes sense that he's so emotional.  Like the guy or not, the certainly didn't picture things working out this way, and the negativity has taken its toll.  Nobody wants to turn things around more than Coach Rod

Herbstreit has no credibility

Herbstreit has no credibility talking about Michigan coaching situations.  Remember when he came out and "broke the story" that Les Miles accepted the job at UM in 2006?  Great work that was.  Regardless, Herbstreit is simply regurgitating other meaningless drival in the MSM and really adding nothing new to the discussion

I think there is some truth

I think there is some truth to that.  Michigan has three big natural rivalries, while OSU really only has Michigan.  From that standpoint, it elevates the rivalry a little more for OSU than it does for Michigan.  While the Michigan coaching staff historically doesn't emphasize doing things throughout the season to prepare for OSU, Tressel has his team do that.  Is that right or wrong for UM?  I'm not sure, but RR and his staff certainly have to be aware that its a key focus in Columbus every week and OSU is going to get a little better prepared and a little hungrier for the game as the season progresses.

John Cooper's undoing was treating the rivalry like just another game, and a lot can be learned from that.  Words can't describe how much I'd love to see him back, because his prep for The Game was a joke.  If we were playing against him, there would be no doubt in my mind that we would go into the horseshoe as big underdogs and beat OSU.

Rich Rod had the team fired up to play last year and we'll see the same strong effort this year.  Remember how he had Ufer radio highlights playing during practice last year?  You could tell how much The Game meant to Rodriguez last year, and you can bet that he'll do absolutely everything to prepare and motivate the team.  Like every week, this team will leave it all out on the field.

I grew up a Michigan fan in

I grew up a Michigan fan in Columbus (my dad went to UM) and I lived there for most of my life before coming to Michigan to get my MBA.

Columbus actually isn't that bad of a city.  Unlike most midwestern cities, Columbus is still growing and has gotten a lot nicer over the past 20 years or so.  Cost of living is low, traffic is ok, and there are many quite a few nice neighborhoods to live in.

As for being an M fan in Columbus, it actually isn't as bad as you might think.  However, when I lived there, I made a very deliberate point of not listening to sports talk radio or the sports portion of the local news.  Ohio State football is the only sport in Columbus.  Since the city only has one professional team, the Blue Jackets, people in Columbus pretty much talk about Ohio State 24-7-365.

Another observation: you'll see a lot more people wearing Michigan clothing in Columbus than you'll see people wearing OSU clothing around A2.  I would regularly wear Michigan stuff around Columbus, and rarely would I get a comment (walking around campus may be a different story).  However, there were days where I would wonder why people were constantly glaring at me and then remember I was wearing a Michigan hat.  Most OSU fans are respectful, but you'll run across the occasional douche bag.

Long story short: its not that bad being an M fan in Columbus.  The city is actually pretty nice, just be sure not to turn on sports talk radio because listening to that crap will definitely induce projectile vomiting...

Its hard to believe it was

Its hard to believe it was four years ago.  It was so shocking that he died the day before the biggest Michigan-Ohio State game in a decade and one of the biggest of all time.  RIP Bo

I'm currently an MBA2 at

I'm currently an MBA2 at Ross.  There has been a lot of great advice posted, but I do have a couple of things to add:

  • Have you talked to any of the student ambassadors at Ross?  Reaching out to a couple of them within your areas of interest is a great way to learn more about the program and how a Ross MBA will help you achieve your career goals.  You should be able to better craft your responses to the common interview responses based on your conversations with current MBAs.  The ambassadors are there to help you, so definitely take advantage of that.  http://www.bus.umich.edu/Admissions/Mba/Tours/ambassadors.htm
  • You mentioned that you don't care what industry you get into.  That's all well and good, but you need to have some direction in terms of what your career goals are.  Where do you expect to be in 5-years?  10-years?  Those are common questions and you need to be prepared to answer them.  You don't have to go towards the career goals you spoke about in your interview when you get to Ross, but you do need to have a story and career goals for your interview.

Having been in your shoes two years back, I know the process is very stressful.  If you follow the tips that some of the other posters have mentioned and be yourself, you'll do great.  Good luck!

What a career for Griffey.

What a career for Griffey.  As a Reds fan, I'll never forget his time in Cincy.  Although the injuries obviously slowed him down, it was still a pleasure watching that sweet swing.  I went to a Reds game in Cincinnati in May 2004 when the Reds were playing great baseball.  They were playing the Marlins that night.  Late in the game, around the 6th or 7th inning, they cleared everyone out of the bleachers in left field because of lightning in the area.  The lightning was really close, and I can't believe they let them keep playing.  The Reds had a runner in scoring position, and Sean Casey - who was one of the hottest hitters in baseball at the time - was coming to the plate.  Marlins manager Jack McKeon, who managed the Reds a few years back, decides to walk Casey to get to Junior.  On queue, Junior jacks a pitch halfway up the moon deck in right field for a three run home run.  As he rounded third and headed for home, he gave a quick glance at McKeon in the Marlins dugout as if to say "Seriously?  You intentionally walked him to face me???"  The whole scene was just remarkable.

When you think about the injuries he had over the past decade, its amazing he made it this long.  He's got many screws and bolts in his body, and had to rehab back from injuries damn near every year.  I'm glad to see he got to finish his career in a Mariners uniform and am proud of the fact that he played clean in an error when everyone else was dirty.  Next step Hall of Fame for one of the all time best.

Thanks for posting that. Thanks for posting that. Every scout who watches Chapman absolutely raves about him. For a small market team like the Reds to commit $30 million to a guy who has never pitched a day in the majors really describes what kind of stuff he has. He almost made the Reds coming out of spring training, and if he performs he'll be in the majors by June.
If you're looking for one If you're looking for one bedrooms in the Forest / South U area, you might want to take a look at Forest Plaza. I live there now - its an old building but its in pretty good shape. Its a good location if you're a b-school student and many of the occupants are MBAs. The building typically fills up during the MBA admitted students weekend in mid-April, but it looks like they have plenty of units open now. http://www.campusmgt.rentlinx.com/Property.aspx?PropertyID=24271
Glad to hear it. His number Glad to hear it. His number is unofficially retired in Cincinnati and I'm sure the Reds will formally retire it at some point. Hopefully the Hall of Fame is the next accolade in Barry's future. He's one of the best all around shortstops of all time, and he certainly deserves to be there.
That team deserves a hell of That team deserves a hell of a lot of credit for getting to today, but it sure sucks going down that way. How a ref can blow a whistle thinking the puck is covered when the goalie is spinning around looking everywhere for the puck is beyond me. Unbelievable...
UVerse I'm hoping they show the game live on UVerse. Here's the channel info in AA: ESPNU has a different game scheduled for 7:30 (as has been well discussed), but the Michigan game is listed on an alternate channel at its regularly scheduled time - #693 in SD, #1693 in HD. Hopefully UVerse actually airs the game, I've had some issues with them in the past. I'm surprised ESPNU wouldn't use regional coverage for these games, they certainly would get more viewers that way...
I never turn down a I never turn down a opportunity to go to a Michigan football game. I'll go every year, and I've been to the past two tOSU games. The 2008 game was pure misery, and almost everyone would tell you going into the game we were going to watch a massacre. Despite that, I was still there, which I'm sure you were not.
Game I wish I had not been Game I wish I had not been at: UM at OSU, 2008. After the quick interception to start the game, it was pretty much 60 minutes of pure torture. Brandon Minor was the only player on the Michigan offense that looked worthy of being on the field. To top things off, the weather was cold and miserable. Games (among many) I wish I attended: Capital One Bowl on 1/1/2008. It would have been a thrill to watch Lloyd Carr go out the right way in person with a heck of a win. UM-OSU 1997. #1 UM vs. #3 OSU. Woodson & Boston going at each other. It was one hell of a game and one of the best versions of The Game that has gone in UM's favor in recent memory.
As long as the WR is As long as the WR is deserving, I don't think RR is going to take any crap for handing out the #1 jersey. At this point in time, there is no one on the team that deserves that accolade. However, that could change after this year. Hopefully, Tate makes a big step up this year - I think that's necessary for this team to really turn a corner. If Tate makes that jump (and I think there is a good chance he will - both the talent and the desire appear to be there), every receiver on the team gets better.
You know things are bad at CB You know things are bad at CB when everyone's praying Cissoko will be back. Ugh...
I like the optimism, let's I like the optimism, let's just hope the team starts turning the corner this year. The last thing I want to see is Rich Rod get fired and the team rebuilding all over again. Assuming that Tate develops into a solid starting QB and is a four year starter, redshirting Devin Gardner is extremely important. The last thing we want is for him to play in limited time in 2010, only to blow a year of eligibility and leave him only a year to start. There are downsides to the redshirt, though. By redshirting Gardner, Denard would likely remain at QB for next season. I know Denard was a true freshman this year, but I just don't think he has the passing abilities to be a QB in the Big Ten. Hopefully Rich Rod will be able to find some ways to use him at other positions while leaving him at QB.
If I remember correctly, RR If I remember correctly, RR left WVU without saying anything to his players. At least Kelly had the decency to meet with his players and tell them he's leaving and not take the easy way out. On the other hand, Kelly broke the news right after the team banquet. The day was supposed to be a time to celebrate the season. However, the day will be remembered in the players eyes by Kelly's departure. My perspective: couldn't Kelly have put off the signing until today out of respect for his players??? Announcing the departure after the team banquet (and after announcing to the team that he wasn't going anywhere) very much seems like a slap in the face.
Sea of Red While I think some of OSU fans can be attributed to ticket brokers, there were simply too many of them for that alone to be the case. I was in the student section, and by my estimation I would say there was 40,000-50,000 Ohio State fans in attendance. Moreover, I would consider that observation to be conservative. Of note, there was very little red in the student section. I believe that UM students held on to their tix, and were generally much more supportive of the team leading up to the game. Interesting enough, the OSU fans that were there were fairly quiet until late in the 3rd quarter or so. You could hear them cheering on big plays, but that was about it. The O-H-I-O chant, in my mind, was flat out embarassing. Once the chant started, UM fans started cheering and the band started playing to cover it up, but there were simply to many OSU fans to drown it out. While I'm disappointed about the number of OSU fans, among a thousand other items, I think we have many things to be optimistic about. The pieces are starting to fall into place for this to be a solid team again, and I'm confident we won't see another sea of Ohio State scarlet at Michigan Stadium in 2011.
