I've had 2 dreams about the tourney since the brackets were announced. In the first dream, my wife woke me up and I was telling her about how seeding works (I was still half dreaming). In the second dream, I thought it was Wednesday when it was actually Thursday and missed the deadline for filling out my bracket. So I started panicking because I wouldn't have anything but Mich to root for.
Maybe this makes me a bad Michigan football fan, but I honestly never really noticed the color of the facemasks.
I did, however, like the numbers on the helmets. I thought that was a really unique look (sans Alabama). Last year, anyways, I felt like it kind of sent a message like, "We are back to traditional Michigan football."
What the girls who win don't tell you is that their boyfiend or best guy friend told them who to pick for upsets. Then they pick the rest based on the above.
As a #3 seed, I think FSU can make it far. Despite some bad losses, they are 4-1 against Duke and UNC (beat each team twice). I know, its not much of an upset and definitely not a cinderella pick.
As far as Mich, I don't like to speculate and jinx it. I pick them to lose in the first round, always. Then, worst case scenario I got the pick right. Losing a bracket pool is worth Mich winning in the tourney.
I agree with the 4 seed and 3 seed predictions. However, to bump us up to a #2 seed, I think we'd need to beat OSU and Mich St., and do it at least somewhat convincingly (or at least look good while winning those games). Wins over Minnesota, Purdue and Indiana, for example, I don't think would bump us up to a #2.
Unfortunately, the Big Ten is at a disadvantage when it comes to tourney seeding because its so strong top to bottom (sans Nebraska and PSU). It will be tough or almost impossible for any BT team to get a #1, and depending on how MSU and OSU do this weekend, they might not even get a #2. Neither team has been exactly hot lately, although OSU played well last Sunday.
Its ok though, I think the BT will do very well in the tourney. I think Purdue and Indiana, as well as MSU, OSU, and of course Mich will all have a good opportunity to make some noise (not that all of those teams will, but they all will be ready). Playing tough teams in the BT week in and week out pays off this time of year.
The simple fact that this thread exists right now makes me so happy...
Tough call though on which is better. I guess I'd go with b-ball. Michigan is about championships. Both senior classes deserve a lot of credit for what they've been through and what they've done for the university and its fans. They make me proud to be a 2-time Mich grad (soon to be 3-time), and a Mich fan for life.
I think they keep the best of the same # seed closest to home.
For example, if Michigan and Illinois were both #4 seeds, but the committee thought M was a better #4 seed, we would be in the midwest, and Illinois would be in another region.
I would say that #3-5 in the conference sounds about right. Also, keep in mind that we have the easier portion of our schedule coming up, which may bump us up in the AP and Coaches poll.
Aside from OSU (at home), we don't really play any elite Big Ten talent. In terms of middling Big Ten talent, we face Purdue (at home) and Illinois twice.
March Madness, definitely, hands down for me, especially the first weekend. Sixty-four teams playing a total of 48 do-or-die games in 4 days, it can't be beat. The tourney is where college b-ball legends are born (eg - Fab Five, Mike Bibby, Carmelo, etc.)
I have to say though, nothing beats my obsession with Michigan football the week leading up to the season's first game. A VERY close second...
I definitely agree, Ohio is clearly the best team in the Big Ten. Despite that, we played hard, and kept it close until late in the second half. I don't think we could've asked for much more considering we were on the road and we weren't shooting lights out.

I just finished reading the book yesterday too, and I felt like most of the information in the book I already knew, and the book didn't answer any of the burning questions that I had.
I think the key to Rodriguez's firing was the defense. The author only briefly mentioned that there was tension between himself and Shafer and himself and Greg Robinson. Nowhere in the book did he explain the hiring of Shafer or Robinson, or much about the firing of Shafer. They didn't explain why RichRod hired either of those coordinators, who else he considered for the position, his selection criteria for the position, etc.
The thing that I was somewhat surprised about was how much it seemed like RichRod preached tradition behind closed doors. He knew (or should have after a couple months) that a lot of what Michigan was about was tradition and why he was getting blasted by the media was because he was not traditional (spread offense, Mich Man, etc). I think by being more open about that with the media, he could have at least saved himself a lot of grief if not his job
I agree, hopefully we will be a lock when it comes to tourney time. But if we're not, that Iowa loss is one that we'll be wishing we could have back. I was saying this before the game had even started...
I think I have confidence issues when it comes to Michigan b-ball. In my defense, I was around during the Tommy Amaker era, so that explains a lot.
On the first screen in the above play, Morgan rolls to the basket early—he never comes into contact with Marble, nor does he affect the path Marble must take to stay on Burke, eliminating the potential for a switch or even a delay in getting out to Burke.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think as soon as Morgan sees that they are going to double Burke, he is supposed to abandon setting the screen (ie-not make contact on the screen) and "slip the screen", heading straight to the basket. The only problem is that Burke, instead of getting the ball to Morgan immediately (over the top or through a crease), he retreats, letting help rotate over by the time he would be able to get Morgan the ball.
On a true pick and roll, the point is that the screener rolls and seals off the defender on his back side. The guy is still being defended, only the defender is behind him as he rolls to the basket. Notice that Morgan never actually rolls, because there is no defender to seal.
The team overall was very careless with the ball, and looked pretty slow and not very intense on defense, particularly in the first half.
Last year Morris and Morgan would kill teams with Morgan setting high screens and then rolling, slipping the screen, or Morris driving into the paint. I did not see very much if any of that this year. Does that have something to do with it taking time for Burke and Morgan to develop chemistry, or something to do with Burke's size? Why not have Hardaway or Novak run the same thing with Morgan?
Grandpa was an alum and diehard Mich fan, therefore my dad and uncle were Mich fans. Ergo, I was a Mich fan ever since I can remember (I mean that VERY literally).

Grandpa just passed away last winter, wish I could've finished my dissertation sooner so he could've been there. My dissertation will be dedicated to him.
I agree that the VT TD in OT was not a catch and was correctly overturned. However, I don't understand why VT fans seem to think that if the TD stood, that VT would have won. Michigan still had another possession to score a TD to tie the game.
Granted, Michigan's offense couldn't move the ball to save their lives. However, how many times when the team needed the offense to score this year did they (and/or Denard) pull it out, no matter how badly the game was going at the time? (Think ND, OSU, Sugar Bowl, etc.)
While it may be hard to logically explain how this team won some of their games this year (like the sugar bowl), I think this team had a few lucky breaks, and was able to overcome bad breaks. But more importantly, this team knew how to win, was hungry to win, and were able to will themselves to several wins. Knowing how to win is an extremely underrated quality in a team that comes from experienced players and great leadership. Many times, it is referred to as having 'it', and this team had it.

It does, however, depend on your camera angle, as was mentioned and used in the post above. Also, imaging a football field and human beings on it differs greatly from imaging a sphere in relative darkness (as in my thesis).
However, my point stands that for an exact 3D rendering, you would need 2 cameras.
You would need only 2 cameras assuming that you know the exact position of each camera. Each camera gives 2 dimensions, and as long as each camera isn't in the exact same position (practically impossible), then you can find where anything is in 3 dimensional space. Of course, if you want to get real exact, you would want to sync up the cameras so that the shutters open and close at the exact same time.
This is how they do the strike zone thing in baseball. Also, this is how humans have depth perception (two eyes, a couple inches apart), and 3-D movies are shot (the cameras have two lenses separated by a foot or less). If it seems like I know too much about this, my Ph.D. thesis involves two high frame-rate cameras used simultaneously to determine a particle's position in 3D space as a function of time.
Edit: Of course the accuracy of your method is limited by camera resolution.
Overall, a very interesting post. Being an engineer, a couple further questions came to mind that would be interesting to look into:
Does taking a defensive timeout affect the rates of offensive success in converting a first down or scoring? In other words, not taking into account the clock, does a timeout benefit an offense or defense in these situations? This would mostly be something to take into account in issue 2 or 3 noted above for timeouts.
Also, is the advantage dependent on coaches/coordinators? Does it depend on unit ranking? Eg - Does a timeout benefit a 80th ranked offense more than a 5th ranked offense? (the same could be asked about defense)
Unfortunately, I don't have time to look at the stats for these questions, but the results would be interesting.
It seems like a lot of the OL that we have recruited for the 2012 class seem to have Oregon in their top 5 or 10 schools. Granted, Oregon is a top ten program in the country right now. However, from discussion during the Richrod era, its seems as though spread offenses prefer smaller, quicker OL, whereas Brady Hoke talks about having/getting big, strong OL.
Is this something where they tailor their OL bodies by the training programs once they arrive at the respective university? Or is this possibly a result of Richrod having already developed a relationship with some of these recruits, and Hoke taking advantage of that prior relationship/interest in Michigan? Or is it just that our OL recruits are so awesome that they are big, strong, AND quick, so they would fit well in any system?
I also refused to do the wave for the same reason, and I was in the section that was trying to start it. A 15 point lead against any opponent is not enough of a lead for me to be distracted by doing the wave. At that point, I was still intently watching the game, making sure that we would pull out the W.
Also, just curious, does anyone think that it distracts the players? (not saying I won't/don't do it in a blow-out) Especially when the student section starts cheering (when the alumni picks up the wave) at a seemingly random point in terms of what's happening in the game; I could see that being kind of confusing. Maybe (and hopefully) the players are just so focused on what's going on in the game that they don't even notice...
I just drove by on Sunday, but I forgot to bring my camera. From the outside, things looked mostly done. It looked like they were still working on some things on the inside though.

Tom Brady saved me Monday night, I came back from being down 35 points going into Monday night's game to win (Brady got me ~43 pts in my league's scoring system). I also have Mario Manningham. He wasn't super productive in week 1, but I hope he can start producing a little better.
Same here. I sat in section 31, and mostly watched the scoreboard when the ball was on the opposite side of the field (and not on purpose).
The downs being screwed up was really annoying at first, but i think they fixed it later on in the game, didn't they? I didn't notice it in the second half, at least not as much.
I've been to 54 out of the last 57 home games. My longest streak was 35 games. The stretch goes back to 2003, including the last time we beat OSU. I've only missed 3 games during this time, 2 for weddings, and 1 for a business trip. Luckily the games I missed were just Houston, Central Mich, and Delaware St.
As a Ph.D. student, we sometimes forget to register for classes until the last day, since our "courses" never fill up. One of my fellow PhD classmates was getting worried because they still hadn't received their tickets.
They have now registered for classes, I'm guessing that they will still receive them in the mail? Does anyone know exactly how that works? Do you just have to be registered by the time they finish mailing the last sets of tickets? Or do you have to go pick them up if you aren't registered at the time that they would have initially mailed them?
If Sparty beats Ohio, we're going to get earfuls from Sparty about how we haven't been able to beat them for 7 years...that is, until we beat Sparty AND Ohio. I don't know if I can deal with that...
I thought he had turned things around when he decided to come back for his final year and at the beginning of his senior year when he was all business. It seemed like Lloyd had given him a good talking to. Maybe Lloyd needs to give him another call to set him straight.
Growing up, I was always the biggest Michigan fan. My grandpa graduated from Mich, so he was a big Mich fan and that 'fandom' was passed down to my Dad and my Uncle, and finally to myself and my brother. As a kid, I would literally cry when Michigan would lose a football game.
I kind of always figured that I would have to become a fan of some other college in my life, either when I went to another school for undergrad or grad school, at least in some capacity. However, after graduating from Mich with a Bachelors, Masters, and soon a Ph.D., and marrying a Michigan alum, I now know that I will never be anything but a Michigan fan...and I am more than OK with that!
I agree that the difference between a 40yd and 100m race are very different. I'm sure that Ben Johnson (especially 'roids aided') would be able to run the 40 in significantly less than 4.38s if he had trained specifically for that distance.
Comcast, Blockbuster (the store near me went out of business), and now Netflix, I feel like are or have all ripped me off. How can TV and movies really be that expensive? Having interned and getting research funding for NASA for several years now, it has been rumored within NASA that this is, in fact, NOT the last shuttle mission. Its not on the schedule yet, but they are hoping to send up one more mission in the fall. So there will likely be one more shuttle launch.
My Dad ran into Bo Schembechler several years ago at the Detroit airport. He didn't have anything with him except for a piece of paper to get him to sign, but he got him to sign it to me. I remember when my Dad got home and gave it to me (I was probably about 10). Even then, I was the biggest Michigan fan and I knew all about Bo, but I couldn't believe it. I have that piece of paper framed and wouldn't give it up for anything.
Also, my uncle has a baseball with about 10-15 players' signatures from the '68 Tigers on it. He's still working on collecting more of the players' signatures when they do public signings, etc.
It says that it will be played on the hangar deck in the case of rain... What about wind? Even a slight breeze can really screw up shots, especially 3-pointers. Also, more often than not, on the ocean or even in a bay, it is pretty breezy. I can't see them not having some sort of barrier or something around the court to block the wind.
Seeing the Illinois game on TV this morning reminded me of just how bad we actually were on defense last year, I had forgotten... Hopefully we can turn things around sooner rather than later.
And Nebraska had an overtime miracle where a receiver illegally kicked the ball to himself, so they should have had one loss anyway.
Minor detail, but that Nebraska kick play is one of those vivid memories that will always seem like I was there. He kicked it up, and another player caught it.
Chauncey and Rip weren't even all-stars until after 2004. And Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace only had 2 each before 2004 (according to Wikipedia). I would say that none of those players at the time were 'superstars', or even 'star' players. What made that Pistons team great was how they complemented each other, and I was proud of that.
I'm wondering if anyone else thinks we will see that type of offense this year, only with more QB runs? It was kind of a hybrid spread with a lot of passing and some running out of the spread formations to keep the defense honest.
I'm sure certain situations will be more power running based, but I think we could be successful with that type of an offense for this year. Our personnel would fit very well.
Kind of OT for this thread, but anyways... So the evening that Stonum got the DUI, my friend and I saw him walking down South U earlier in the evening.
After we heard about the DUI the next week, my friend said, "Man, I wish I could go back and run up and just punch him in the face or something. Then he would've had to go to the hospital or something and would've never gotten that DUI!" (kidding of course)

Just got myself another 6-pack of Hopslam today, enjoying that right now.
In Wisconsin's defense, they have been playing much better b-ball since they lost to Mich. They've won 7 out of their last 8, all big ten games.

I thought I had heard that we had cooled off on Burbridge because of admissions concerns, BEFORE he committed to MSU...is that not true?
I took a quantum physics exam at 8:30am the day after my 21st, seriously. Therefore, I studied on my 21st b-day.

Same here. I sat in section 31, and mostly watched the scoreboard when the ball was on the opposite side of the field (and not on purpose).
The downs being screwed up was really annoying at first, but i think they fixed it later on in the game, didn't they? I didn't notice it in the second half, at least not as much.
I've been to 54 out of the last 57 home games. My longest streak was 35 games. The stretch goes back to 2003, including the last time we beat OSU. I've only missed 3 games during this time, 2 for weddings, and 1 for a business trip. Luckily the games I missed were just Houston, Central Mich, and Delaware St.
As a Ph.D. student, we sometimes forget to register for classes until the last day, since our "courses" never fill up. One of my fellow PhD classmates was getting worried because they still hadn't received their tickets.
They have now registered for classes, I'm guessing that they will still receive them in the mail? Does anyone know exactly how that works? Do you just have to be registered by the time they finish mailing the last sets of tickets? Or do you have to go pick them up if you aren't registered at the time that they would have initially mailed them?
If Sparty beats Ohio, we're going to get earfuls from Sparty about how we haven't been able to beat them for 7 years...that is, until we beat Sparty AND Ohio. I don't know if I can deal with that...
I thought he had turned things around when he decided to come back for his final year and at the beginning of his senior year when he was all business. It seemed like Lloyd had given him a good talking to. Maybe Lloyd needs to give him another call to set him straight.
Growing up, I was always the biggest Michigan fan. My grandpa graduated from Mich, so he was a big Mich fan and that 'fandom' was passed down to my Dad and my Uncle, and finally to myself and my brother. As a kid, I would literally cry when Michigan would lose a football game.
I kind of always figured that I would have to become a fan of some other college in my life, either when I went to another school for undergrad or grad school, at least in some capacity. However, after graduating from Mich with a Bachelors, Masters, and soon a Ph.D., and marrying a Michigan alum, I now know that I will never be anything but a Michigan fan...and I am more than OK with that!
I agree that the difference between a 40yd and 100m race are very different. I'm sure that Ben Johnson (especially 'roids aided') would be able to run the 40 in significantly less than 4.38s if he had trained specifically for that distance.
Keep "Better Son/Daughter". I like the videos with that song, as others have said above, it is very unique for a hype video.
Comcast, Blockbuster (the store near me went out of business), and now Netflix, I feel like are or have all ripped me off. How can TV and movies really be that expensive? You can rent movies from Family VIdeo for like $2 per movie! Too bad there isn't one in AA. I guess I'll be left to renting from Redbox...
Having interned and getting research funding for NASA for several years now, it has been rumored within NASA that this is, in fact, NOT the last shuttle mission. Its not on the schedule yet, but they are hoping to send up one more mission in the fall. So there will likely be one more shuttle launch.
My Dad ran into Bo Schembechler several years ago at the Detroit airport. He didn't have anything with him except for a piece of paper to get him to sign, but he got him to sign it to me. I remember when my Dad got home and gave it to me (I was probably about 10). Even then, I was the biggest Michigan fan and I knew all about Bo, but I couldn't believe it. I have that piece of paper framed and wouldn't give it up for anything.
Also, my uncle has a baseball with about 10-15 players' signatures from the '68 Tigers on it. He's still working on collecting more of the players' signatures when they do public signings, etc.
It says that it will be played on the hangar deck in the case of rain... What about wind? Even a slight breeze can really screw up shots, especially 3-pointers. Also, more often than not, on the ocean or even in a bay, it is pretty breezy. I can't see them not having some sort of barrier or something around the court to block the wind.
Seeing the Illinois game on TV this morning reminded me of just how bad we actually were on defense last year, I had forgotten... Hopefully we can turn things around sooner rather than later.
Minor detail, but that Nebraska kick play is one of those vivid memories that will always seem like I was there. He kicked it up, and another player caught it.
Purdue is a strong engineering school, which is probably why that male enrollment is higher. The College of Engineering at UM is around 80% male...
Chauncey and Rip weren't even all-stars until after 2004. And Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace only had 2 each before 2004 (according to Wikipedia). I would say that none of those players at the time were 'superstars', or even 'star' players. What made that Pistons team great was how they complemented each other, and I was proud of that.
I'm wondering if anyone else thinks we will see that type of offense this year, only with more QB runs? It was kind of a hybrid spread with a lot of passing and some running out of the spread formations to keep the defense honest.
I'm sure certain situations will be more power running based, but I think we could be successful with that type of an offense for this year. Our personnel would fit very well.
Kind of OT for this thread, but anyways... So the evening that Stonum got the DUI, my friend and I saw him walking down South U earlier in the evening.
After we heard about the DUI the next week, my friend said, "Man, I wish I could go back and run up and just punch him in the face or something. Then he would've had to go to the hospital or something and would've never gotten that DUI!" (kidding of course)
