We want MSU to win. That 1% chance of us not making it involves OSU stealing an autobid. I would rather play in Munn then see OSU "steal" our spot. The sites that give us 99% in give OSU just a 6% chance of making the tournament. Michigan losing and OSU beating Minnesota is primary path for us being out.

I am a Physics/Material Science Engineering dual degree grad from Michigan.
I loved my Physics classes, but my parents said "Engineering!" I convinced them to let me double major.
After undergrad I wanted grad school, and I was convinced by my Engineering advisor to apply to Engineering. I got in to a top 5 Engineering Grad School in my field (Illinois), so I went. Grad School in a field you don't love is aweful! I completd my Master's, and went for Physics Grad School. I decided to go somewhere a better fit for me (Virginia) got my Ph.D., and now I am Physics Professor at a small Public. I love my job and it was the right career path for me,.
Some General Observations for the OP:
1) Physics is a great major. It is widely regared is a challenging/difficult degree. All of my students get good jobs. Many for a higher sallery then I get paid as a Prof.
2) Astronomy is also a good field, but I can't speak to the job prospects. In general there is a lot of cross over.
3) There is a lot of Math in Physics/Astronomy/Engineering. You don't have to be a whiz, but you can't hate Math.
4) Engineers ask the "How" questiosn. Scientists ask the "Why" questions. Which questions does your son like asking?
5) To be active in the field (Physics or Astronomy) grad school is necessary. Ph.D. typically.
The great news is that Grad Scool is free for 98% of Physics/ Astronomy/Engineering grad students. In fact you typically get payed (~$24K these days). So you won't go brooke paying for grad school.
The bad news is that the drop out rate is ~50%. Why? you can get a great high paying job if you quit or keep getting payed peanuts if you stay. It is also difficult, some don't make it on grades.
6) Faculty positions are rare. In Physics only about 25% end up in Academia. Once again the good news is that Industry pays a lot better. Most of my friends in Industry make double my salery. Of course a prof a research school like UofM would make 50% more then me.
7) Other good Astronomy departments? Illinois and Virginia are also good. Some Physics programs will off Astrophysics.
Illinois 1995 - We killed Illinois. Fun game and a friendly crowd even though we were "big" rivals.
Purdue 1996 - Terrible game. Probably the worst I have ever seen Michigan play. We just gave the game to Purdue.
Penn State 1997 - Wonderful game. I went to the alumni tailgate and traded my two upperdeck seats for one row 3 seat on about the 30. Had a great time watching Michigan destroy Penn State. Probably my greatest Michigan Football game either home or away. The only one close was Notre Dame 1991.
Notre Dame thought the same thing about another Stanford coach. They thought if you are a success at Stanford than you must be a success at Notre Dame. That didn't turn out the way they thought it would.
How many years do you give Harbaugh to win a B10 champoonship? 3 years? Or do you fire him quick as well?
Here is my problem with bringing in Harbaugh now, he could easily start with 2 losing seasons. Than the whole fire the coach thing starts up again. Maybe since he is a good ole boy "Michigan Man" he can skate through. My fear is that we end up playing musical coaches and spend the next 15 years being Notre Dame going 7-5 all the time.
So for all the Harbough fans, what is the expectation? How many years until a B10 title? When can we fire him if he "fails"?
I support RR is long is he is our coach, I suported Carr, and I would support Harbaugh or anyone else that is the coach.
Unfortuantly there is a group of 1997 Michigan fans that expect a NC every few years and would rather fire coaches all the time.

There is no talent on defense. I can easily see Harbaugh losing 9 games next year, espicially if he changes the offense and loses half of the recruits.

For someone that was nervous before UMass, I am strangely confident against State. I think that we contain them and win big. Our defense plays well against this sort of team. They held Notre Dame for much of the second half even with Crist. They held UConn for most of that game as well.
Remember that our defense is young they will improve with time. I actually don't think that State's passing game is that strong.
I doubt we will go 12-0, but I will be schocked if we lose to either illinois or purdue. I also think we should beat Penn State. Yes, I think State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and OSU will be difficult, but we do get 3 of those at home.

Other teams should go for it against us. Our offense can score from anywhere. For Indiana their punter was off so punting would only get them a few yeards anyway. I would be interested in the mathlete's thoughts.

Look we should beat UMass, but Delaware state is a bad D1AA team. UMass is a good D1AA team. This will not be 70-0, and if we just play Gardner we will have trouble.
My older sister went to MSU when I was 5. She also went to vet school there, so for many years I cheered for State. I went to about one State game a year for around 8 years. I never saw State win live. I was thrilled when they beat Michigan and went to the Rose Bowl in 1987.
I wanted to study Science or Engineering growing up. When I was a Junior in High School, I realized that Michigan was a lot better school in these fields, and I started to consider living with the enemy. When I was accepted at Tech, MSU, and Michigan, the choice was easy: Michigan. My sister was not happy.
My freshman year, I became a Michigan fan. I loved my school. My friends were great, and it was neat to be at a place that valued education. When it came time to choose sides in the 1990 UM-MSU game, the choice was also easy: Michigan. Well, the first time I saw MSU beat Michigan live was the first time I didn't want them to win a game.
State is still my 4th favorite team. If they are not playing, Michigan, Illinois, or Virginia, than I cheer for State. (I got graduate degrees from the other two schools.)
It is fine to cheer for your childhood team. But no matter how bad Michigan gets in football, basketball, or hockey. I will always cheer for them, and remember those great years as a student. GO BLUE.
WOJO is a Michigan and Alum, and he is always pretty fair to us. I expect the game to be close.
My favorite quote from a UofM player before a UM-MSU game, was something like this: "We need to win this game, or we will hear about it for the next 5 years."
A lot of my family went to State, and no matter how many times we win I always hear but we we beat you in the 1990 game.
Colorado probably got a 2 or 3 for 1. The non-BCS programs are really pushing this sort of thing. This is why Texas is playing at Wyoming.
MSU has set up to play EMU/CMU/WMU over like the next 15(or 10) year in a rotating basis. Each is also getting one home game against MSU. Can you imagine the hype at these schools for playing MSU at home!
This is why the number of FCS games have gone up for everyone. Most MAC/WAC/MWC/CUSA teams are demanding at least one return trip. So instead teams are scheduling Delaware State so they can keep their 7 or 8 home games.
It is going to be harder going forward for Michigan to maintain an 8 game home schedule. Personally I would like to see a maximum of 7 home games per team.
As an alum of UofM and UVa, I can say that for most of the time being a UVa fan was a nice relaxing experience. Decent teams with low expectations meant low stress. I always stress during Michigan games.
Groh has to be done. He has one good year out of the last three, and this year looks very bad.
I miss the sundresses and ties. It added a lot of character to the UVa crowd. I do prefer the new band. The scramble band was fairly lame and usually unfunny.
1997 vs. Penn State -- Last game that I have seen live. I made the drive over from grad school. Traded my two nose bleed tickets to an alum that had an extra ticket at the 40 yard line 3rd row. Great seats. Best game I have ever seen Michigan play. They did nothing wrong from start to finish. For the first time I thought we might be #1.
1991 vs. Notre Dame -- Great close game. They had come from behind to beat us the year before, so emotion was high. I was in the student section about the 15 yard line. We had a great view of Desmond's great catch in the end zone.
1991 vs. Ohio State -- A slaughter, but Desmond Howard finished off a magical season with a punt return into the end zone and then flashed the Heisman pose. Howard was so amazing in 1991.
1993 vs. Ohio State -- We were 6 and 4 they would go to the Rose Bowl with a win. A LOT more Buckeye fans then in 1991. They all were carrying roses. Final Score Michigan 28 OSU 0. Michigan played great that day.
A surprise but defiantly one of the most exciting games I ever saw in person:
1990 vs. MSU -- I know a loss. MSU broke our hearts. We were #1. A win there and maybe a National Championship was waiting for us. But it was an amazing game. The crowd was electric. Late in the 4th quarter State scored to make it 21-14, the students were really down. On the kickoff Desmond Howard returned it for a touchdown into the student end zone. The students went CRAZY. Everyone was jumping up and down hugging each other. As a freshman that moment made me a true Michigan football fan. What followed, State drove for another touchdown 28-21, and Michigan answered scoring with a few seconds left to make it 28-27. On the two point conversion Howard was "closely" defended and he wasn't able to bring it in.
We then recovered the onside kick and had a hail mary that was almost caught in the end zone.

I grew up a State fan, but I went to Michigan for Undergrad. I cheered for Michigan as soon as I steped in the door. It was my school.
I went to Illinois for my Master's dgree. I cheer for Illinois except when they play Michigan.
I went to Virginia for my Doctorate. I cheer for UVa except when they play Michigan.
My Dad cheers for Michgan football and State basketball.
It is a free country cheer for whoever you want.

Here is what they are doing with Morris Package:
1) Normally when Speight goes out it is for the Wildcat Peppers package.
2) Peppers might throw, but 90% of the time this is a run.
3) Defenses will play run when they see Speight go out.
4) By having the Morris package they can take Speight out, but still there is threat of a real QB throwing the ball.
5) The OSU play will be Morris comes in and throws a bomb on a 4 vertical play. No tricks, perhaps not even play action.
Tech had been bad for 30 years before Mel got there. The improvement that he is done there is amazing.
He would have huge success at Michigan.
