He played well when he played, and he was behind a senior likely 1st round pick and senior likely 2nd or 3rd round pick who rightly got the bulk of the playing time. That he didn't jump in front of experienced, really good players is no indictment of his skills. He'll be real good next year as he slots into the starting lineup.

Oh, he was tweeting it out this last weekend again. And even the Ravens official twitter actually posted it as well.
|3 days 6 hours ago||I'm surprised he took the||
I'm surprised he took the job, definitely a good hire for Purdue. He's in the vein of guys that Purdue needed to consider (someone who will do something different there). There's of course the danger he'll use it as a stepping stone job but the B1G has enough money that they ought to be able to keep him from most programs if a jump elsewhere would be based solely on pay.
I'm thankful they didn't hire a guy like Calhoun or Coach Ken from Navy, because at least the "different" that Purdue will run offensively won't be buttloads of cut blocks.

Is it possible that he's so strong to Michigan that they've set him up to be a blueshirt? There has to be some pretty significant trust both ways for that. He's visited once or twice on his own. Seems like a guy they want to be in the class one way or the other.

I said this in response to Spencer on Twitter, but I reiterate
I'd sooner hire the dickbutt picture than hire Kiffin or Josh McDaniels as my college HC

Hey who wouldn't want to play behind pro bowl offensive linemen like Kyle Long and Josh Sitton and throw to a good receiver like Alshon Jeffrey? Surely nothing would happen to knock all three of those guys out of the lineup.

Northwestern also lost @Butler in a game that was tied with 30 seconds left (Butler held for the last shot and hit a contested jumper with 0.5 left). Butler is probably going to be their usual decent self, making the tourney, finishing 4th-ish in the Big East, etc. I think some of the talent Collins has been able to bring in is starting to come to fruition at Northwestern?
(of course now watch Vic Law and McIntosh go down hurt because Northwestern)
Also Northwestern has a guy whose name is Dererk Pardon. Not Derek. Dererk. If you were going to go with an odd name, shouldn't you go the full monty and go with Begyar Pardon?
|2 weeks 2 days ago||That would have been great||
That would have been great except JK wants to be a manager, and he'll have clubs in Europe willing to let him. Some of what he'd been pushing for has been implemented and more is coming, hopefully they don't mess with that with him gone. Because our reliance on pay-to-play club teams left out a whole lot of people from the system. Clint Dempsey's parents sacrificed money they didn't have and lots of time to get him to a club. How many Dempseys, and better, did we miss out on because their parents couldn't manage it? How many were we missing out by pretty much ignoring the Mexican and other soccer-mad ethnic communities entirely in our system? They pretty much have their own leagues and such - how do we get the talent into the US system?
MLS clubs building out their academy structure will help some. But there's still a lot of pay-to-play out there.

There's actually only the one of the 8 we didn't recruit, and that's probably because there was no point - it's Pat Swilling's kid, and he's committed to GaTech where his brother is now and his dad and uncle both played as well. Hard to imagine a verbal more solid than that one.

Kelly-Powell doesn't have prototype size and he's not quite fluid enough to be a full-time corner, but he makes up for that with his intelligence, instincts, and physicality.
So... Kovacs, but more athletic?

American Outlaws supporters group people will be 8,000 out of the about 20,000 fans, and they have already said in advance that anyone starting a chant like that in their sections will be subject to removal. They don't mess around either, you can be booted from AO entirely for inappropriate behavior, which can even include losing the ability not only to get tickets through AO (since you wouldn't be a member) but possibly through US Soccer as well.
I'm pissed that I wasn't able to go, had to sell the tix I got in the lottery (we sell them for face value within the AO group)

|6 weeks 6 hours ago||The parts of the graph that||
The parts of the graph that are most interesting are the extremes. The teams who significantly increased their pace all appear below the line, meaning defense got worse to some degree, while the teams that slowed way the hell down all appear above the line. Maybe the sample size isn't large enough, but it does seem there's a clear correlation.
Of course, correlation is not causation, and the article itself doesn't claim to know why the correlation exists.

That's the thing though - Ohio State and Auburn are in the top 20 of pace, and still have top 10 defenses. Clemson is faster than average and does a fair bit of no-huddle stuff, and they're #2 in S&P+ defense.

|7 weeks 2 hours ago||Their recruiting pipelines||
Their recruiting pipelines aren't anything special. They've usually been in the bottom few teams in the conference. The good defensive linemen the last few years have either been 3 stars they developed (Smoot was a 225 lb guy out of high school) or occasional JUCO (Jihad Ward, for one).
Lovie bringing them up in recruiting in part involves working the Chicago area where he has name recognition with the kids and actually keeping a few of the 4 star Illinois kids in state. Beckman's recruiting kinda sucked, so there's nowhere to go but up really.

I don't know if it's still the case, but the most amazing thing in the games I've gone to there was in/out privileges. If you didn't park super far you could go to your car at the half for a beer. Or to walk your dog (which my cousin did). And then come back to the stadium early in the 3rd. Only college games I've ever been to that allowed it.

I imagine FEI, as a drive-based stat, really likes that we have a very strong record of finishing drives in the end zone, hence our offense being rated much higher there than in S&P+ (a play-based stat)
