If I were to leave my embarrassing job for the job in my field of study, I would not be able to afford to make the monthly payment on my student loans, car payments, car insurance payments, cell phone payments, internet bill, rent a one bedroom apartment and be able to adequately feed myself even if I had foodstamps, which as a college student I was declared ineligible for.

Look, I like both the show and the books but if we are all being totally honest here, the last two books had a ton of aimless filler. Many of the deviations give major characters like Sansa, Brienne, and Jaime, as well as minor/background characters like Bronn and Littlefinger, something to actually do.
I mean, did you really want to see multiple episodes of *SPOILER ALERT* Jaime spending a full season ending a siege and whining about Cersei? What about several episodes of Sansa caring for Robin Arryn's bitch ass while Littlefinger pops in for 30 seconds? Or imagine the endless fun of watching Brienne and Pod wander the north going from town to town looking for the Stark girls and meeting almost no one of consequence until the very last second? *END SPOILERS*
I liked the books, but the last one especially was a slog.

The NCAA is a farm system for the NFL, NBA, and MLB. One only needs to take a look at the draft class of each sport every year and count how many players came from college as opposed to overseas or some random amateur league. The ratio is heavily toward college athletes.
And while Bo never really cared about money, the fact remains that the financial stakes (and coaching salaries) are exponentially higher now than they were 25 years ago, when schools like ND and Alabama (just off the top of my head) were still giving out impermissible benefits to improve their teams.

Medicine and league rules have both advanced so much in the last 30-50 years that players have more awareness and more control about their health, but the people who were/are expressing the most concern are the guys who played in the 60's, 70's, 80's and even 90's, and most of that concern seems to be directed towards the current crop of unpaid teens who are quite literally putting their lives on the line for a shot at becoming a millionaire, while others around them risk nothing and profit handsomely off of them.

|20 weeks 19 hours ago||My original post got deleted||
My original post got deleted before I had the chance to post it (Damn you, MGoApp!!) so I retyped it and left out some stuff.
1) The accounting ones, I can justify. A business is a business degree and some basic understanding accounting is neccessary. Not sure I needed three classes, but it is what it is.
2) I scored a 32 on the English portion of my ACT, which all of my counselors were well aware of while they figured out what classes I needed. If critical reading and writing is indeed the hidden purpose of the neccessity of History credits as opposed to English credits (which I still had to take), then there is another thing seriously wrong with the education system.
3) I agree that Science is part of being a well rounded educated person, why is why I took a year each of Chem and Physics way back in my junior and senior years of High school, which I got B's in. I didn't add this in my original post, but I also had to take two years of calc in high school, before taking another two years of calc in college... for a marketing degree. Add that to another thing seemingly wrong with education.
4) I will admit that it is entirely possible that I just had a shitty collection of counselors, but my story is not a unique one. There is nothing special about my college experience. I am just another student in an increasingly large group who looks at his degree and thinks of all of the money spent and questionable advice that was given and taken and wonder if it was really worth all of the debt I am in just to say I have a degree in a field I hate in a shitty job market.
5) Thank you for being a teacher. That is one thankless job and I can't imagine some of the shit you put up with, like helicopter parents. Ugh.
|20 weeks 1 day ago||I actually told my guidance||
I actually told my guidance counselor that I wanted to direct movies for a living, because I had no other answer to "What do you want to do for a living?" She didn't really have a response to that.
I genuinely wanted that to be my career. I love movies and creating/telling stories but for so many reasons I didn't pursue that. My parents wanted me to have "a degree in business because the world will always need businessmen" (their actual words) and I honestly don't blame them for that. They were looking out for my best interest and directing films is not exactly the most financially secure job for your average wannabe filmmaker.

Oh god the filler classes... So many filler classes...
I'm a marketing major, why do I need to take Physics and Chemistry? Why do I need to take two History classes, one modern and one ancient? Why do I need to take three accounting classes? I went to a community college to get all my gen eds out of the damn way.
|20 weeks 1 day ago||Two things (and sorry if this doesn't add much to||
Two things (and sorry if this doesn't add much to the conversation. It's just something that's been on my mind):
1) It is interesting to see how the attitude of going to college has changed over the years. It feels like not that long ago when going to college was sort of a unique bonus for go getters and ambitious kids as opposed to an expectation for everyone nowadays.
I have witnessed and spoken to so many students who were going to college just because that's what we were told we were supposed to do (myself included). No real plan, no real/defined goal, no clue what we wanted to do for a living or what we wanted to major in. We are here because we were told that this was the next step and we'll figure it out when we get on campus, so we just rolled along with it because we did not want to disappoint our parents.
2) Which brings me to my second thing: I don't really regret going to college, but I do regret not having some kind of plan. I wasted a year switching majors, put my career and my future almost entirely in the hands of an inept guidance counselor, and graduated in five years with a degree in a subject that I increasingly can't stand (yay, marketing!) and one that every company in the surrounding area just lumps in with cold calling sales jobs anyway.
I guess I didn't have much of a point in ranting about this, other than to get that off my chest and maybe throw my chip in the "college attitude reform" pile.
Also: the jobs in the degree thing is not surprising at all, especially if you talked to someone who majored in Political Science or Communications (half of my classes were just about talking to someone. I shit you not). Lots of go nowhere degrees in college.

That's why I'm not that bothered by her comments. Every fanbase has their idiots, and if she is going to judge one as large as Michigan's based on a couple of anonymous jackwagons, then I'm just like, "Eh, that's her problem."

Maybe a smart risk for the football team, but a giant "fuck you" to many of the players who commited thinking they'd get a fair chance once they are upperclassmen and instead get cut by their junior year to make room for The Next Big Thing™
And I fully realize that most players are aware of this potential to some small degree, but many of those guys are left without much of a safety net and having to transfer to smaller, less prolific schools with only a couple of college credits towards some worthless Gen Ed field to show for it.

Nine times out of ten, I would just say "touché." This was the tenth.
That rule of "bad press is still press" works out great for smaller brands in competitive/obscure markets where you desperately need to stay relevant if you have any hopes of staying in business, like GoDaddy.com and their joke-y, faux scandalous, sexualized ads and month long pre-Superbowl build ups... but Nationwide is not in that scenario.
They are a well known brand thatplaced a bad ad in the biggest ad day of the year in America that basically said, "Hey, buy our insurance in case you kill your kid!" and not in a dark, black humor kind of way. THAT may have given them the discussion they craved with less of a backlash. But instead, they went the overly serious route and now people are sad and pissed and are now boycotting Nationwide because of the commercial.

I majored in Advertising in college and the first rule of advertising that every one of my professors would constantly pound into my head was, "Make sure that your message is simple, clear, and easy to understand,"
So, if someone asked me what Nationwide's message was, I would say that it felt like they were telling me to buy life insurace for my child because I never know when my neglect might get them killed.
Horrible, horrible, horrible idea/execution/everything. This should not have ever been brought up even in brainstorming.

|23 weeks 3 days ago||1) Luck has not won anything||
1) Luck has not won anything yet. Please do not begin to compare him to two of the greatest QBs of all time until he has played at least 6-8 seasons.
2) Harbaugh deserves more than 10% credit for Andrew Luck. You even said it yourself,
"But 4 stars is 4 stars. He was the 4th rated QB in the class."
Yes, the fourth. Not the first. 4 stars, not 5. Which means that even though some analysts thought he was good, no one thought he was going to be the number one overall pick or as Mel Kiper once said of him, "...the safest draft pick I've seen since Peyton Manning." Luck deserves some credit for that, but he absolutely did not get there all by himself. Not even close.
3) I'll give you a partial on Kaepernick. He has indeed regressed, but he is regressing from a partial year of starting to a full year of starting to a year of injuries and organizational dysfuntion. He also took his team to a 3 point Super Bowl loss and an NFC championship appearance. I'm hesitant to write him off as a failure.
4) Alex Smith was a complete bust until Harbaugh saved his career. Seriously, go look at his stats, I'll wait. He had a 51:53 TD to INT ratio and was 19-31. Since Harbaugh? 71:23, 38-16-1. Throw out the win-loss if you want, he's still a MUCH better QB since Harbaugh coached him. Also, Alex Smith is NOT the problem with Kansas City. Not by a long shot.
5) I don't think you are a troll. Just felt the need to toss this in here cause of a later comment someone made.

You look at what he has done with Luck, Kap, and Alex Smith... three different yet successful QBs for three successful offenses. Smith was a huge bust until Harbaugh came into town, Kaepernick was considered a huge reach and a project when they drafted him, and while Luck was a well regarded recruit, he wasn't some consensus 5 star true freshman starter who was projected as a three year player.
They may not all have set passing records, but all three have had loads of success with varying quality of their offensive lines and mostly below average receivers (save arguably the WRs for Luck's current season with the Colts).

It's not unheard of for a good coach to swoop in and take a talented, underperforming team and go undefeated, i.e. Urban. It's also not out of the question for there to be some growing pains while getting familiar with your new coach, i.e. Rodriguez.
I think Harbaugh falls a bit closer to Urban on that scale, mostly because of the system he is trying to run with the players he has. Both coaches were handed players who fit the schemes they are trying to run and one has been wildly successful while the other has yet to coach a game. We'll see.

Sorry, but I can't put my unwavering trust in someone who has only been a member for two weeks. I appreciate your insight, but this community has been burned countless times by fake accounts who seemed very credible right up until they were caught.
As someone said earlier, the agent wouldn't be much of an agent if he wasn't trying to find the best deal for his client up until the very last minute. So, we'll see.
I'm still wildly optimistic. At this point, Michigan just makes the most sense. The Raiders and MAYBE the Falcons are possible landing spots, but I don't see either of them offering the same benifits that Michigan has put on the table, i.e. complete autonomy and a financial package that makes him at worst one of the top three highest paid coaches in all of football. You would really have to want to coach in the NFL to turn down that offer to coach for the Raiders, who haven't won anything since John Madden was a coach and have been the worst franchise in the NFL since 2002. (Yes, worse than the Lions, and yes, I remember 2008. The Raiders still have the worsr overall body of work during the last twelve years.)
I don't know if this is relevant to Harbaugh, but if he came here and continued his successful path in coaching, he would basically be an idol here. He would be the coach that saved Michigan when it was at it's lowest point. It's the kind of stuff they build statues for. And I could not give two shits how pathetic MSU and OSU fans think that would supposedly make us.
So, that said, I'm 100% sure he is coming.

- That the 49er's suck at (passing) offense may have something to do with this. Their line has struggled with injuries all year and their receivers are garbage. Boldin is past his prime, Lloyd is a one hit wonder same as Crabtree, Stevie Johnson is buried in the depth chart after two straight terrible years.
- Kaepernick has struggled a bit, but I would'nt call him a "tire fire." You can easily chalk up his struggles to injuries to his supoprting cast.
- Their DC absolutely deserves a share of credit, but how much is debatable. As far as player discipline, I am not worried about this. NFL organization politics =/= NCAA organization politics
- This, I have no answer for. All I can do is point to his success and improvement at every single head coaching stop and chalk this year up to some really bad luck.
