Those who stayed knew the atmosphere, knew the allegations, knew the culture they were engulfing themselves in. I also think that Brandon would have wanted someone a bit more "green" and tractable in the coaching department, who liked to publicly proclaim his love for Michigan and would be more than grateful at the opportunity Brandon had afforded him. IIRC, Hoke was extremely accomadating to Brandon and it got him thrown under the bus. Les, having had four top ten finishes and a title in his (then) 6 years at LSU, would have probably not been as open to many of DB's attempts to be more involved with his football program.

I remember one where they were interviewing a PSU Senior and all he could do was complain about how much HIS life was ruined by the scandal and how he was loudly booing while they were holding a rememberence for the victims during a pregame warmup AT HOME. The whole interview was a classic selfish us-vs-the-world mentality that the school has.
Almost every one of their fans falls into one of two categories: "oh gee that was sad and all but it wasn't my kid, so I don't give a shit and stop hating on the eternal greatness that is PSU Football!!1!"

Colter had this to say:
And from MGoBlog...
Dude wasn't even sure if he would ever be able to play football again. We don't know if Stanford offered him a medical or not, which is what Harbaugh has been doing while here, at least.
Weaver and Scott haven't said anything at all and Enis said this:
So I have no clue where you are getting all of this false information.
|1 year 22 hours ago||That's fair and I agree, it||
That's fair and I agree, it does look bad. But at this point, I'm just over this story. Swenson has offers to several other good schools and going public about whatever this supposedly is will not have any effect on his playing prospects, as far as I can tell.
And you know, maybe he truly was told about this a while back, maybe he truly was blindsided, maybe he thought that since he gave his verbal to Hoke and was offered previously, his spot was saved no matter what else, maybe he had a shitty year and the coaches told him, "nah, no thank you.". The point is that we will never know and the only word on the matter we will ever have is the word of a freshly wounded high school kid who got spurned by the school he wanted to go to for reasons which we will probably never know but he, and therefore we, can only guess at.
So continuing to poke at this particular story is just pointless to me until this starts happening on the regular to other recruits. Then we can revisit this and start to piece together a narrative.
(And to anybody wanting to bring up Falcon, Colter, or Pipkins, I am not having that argument when there were and are clear medical concerns about them.)

Same story for Falcon. Colter had a severe, career threatening injury in high school, which, again, we are never gonna hear about what was offered or not. All Colter said was that the staff cooled on him.
For the record, I'm gonna come out and say that I'm not one of those people who would bash Urban and Saban over these kinds of things, either, since we may never hear their side of the story.

Why is it that every time I hear an announcer say that the head official for the game "is one of the best in the league," they always call some of the worst games I have ever had the misfortune of seeing?
I mean, that whole game just felt like a series of makeup calls for penalties that they actually missed or think they may have missed. And it was bad for both teams. UM took the LARGE brunt of it, but MSU had a few big plays where I thought a flag could've (legitimately) been thrown, but the refs probably held back because they figured they'd already fucked up the drive enough.

It's getting to the point where I am embarrassed for them. They've owned us since Carr retired, they're undefeated and ranked in the top 5, and yet they still play the whiny, "woe is us, the forgotten children in the shadow" card.
Yet, that kind of whiny and annoying attitude plays perfectly into the culture of the majority of their fans.

"...in your mind you treat Paterno and Sandusky as the same kind of monster."
I don't really. I mean, they are both monsters but I'm not crazy enough to state that the act of child molestation is the same as the act of playing the victim while simultaneously trying to discredit the real, proven victims.
Sandusky is a true monster and I will never say he is not, but my issue with Jay and the Paterno family is that they are all playing the "We are the true victims, here, not those lying kids!" card in a case that deals with sexual violence and irreparable mental harm towards children. If that itself is not some form of a monsterous act, then I do not know what to tell you.

And yes, I know that was an uncalled-for rant, but I still see too many Paterno apologists who truly believe "it was all a conspiracy just to ruin Penn State's good reputation." Hell, I've been stuck in a fantasy work league with the guy for three years and his team name is still "The Sandusky Squealors". It takes every ounce of my energy not to punch the dude every time I see him.

I don't think I will ever know of a person that I could hate more than Jay Paterno.
Sandusky is a fucking monster but at least he knows he it and the whole world knows it, what little comfort that brings. Jay thinks he's fighting a one family crusade against the pinnacle of injustice and he has a cult of apologist morons that enthusiastically eat up and regurgitate every idiotic fucking word that spews from his mouth.
These people are the reason that I hope karma exists. Fuck the Paterno family.

I'll put it like this. You are about to go on the first date with the most beautiful woman in the world and you've been crushing on her hard. All of your friends tell you, "Holy shit, bro! So jealous! Hey, take her out to a nice dinner and go see this funny movie! Our girlfriends all wanted to do that and they loved it, so there's no way she won't like you after that!" And they all have hot enough girlfriends (although not as hot as this woman), so why the hell shouldn't you at least try it?
But no, you tell them you want to go to a rodeo and take her out to McDonald's afterwards instead. They all look at you like you're crazy, but you insist, "It's not THAT bad..."
Don't be the stubborn dude who blew his chance at sex every night with the hottest woman in the world just because he thought Rodeo and McDonald's was an appropriate substitution for Red Lobster and a movie she wants to see.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||This is probably the best advice. If you know you||
This is probably the best advice. If you know you won't be seeing your future bosses later that evening, just bring a change of clothes and get changed into the stuff you actually want to wear after the pregame stuff. But don't fuck up a potential dream job just because you want to look like you fit in with all the other obsessive superfans.
|1 year 17 weeks ago||I know that my opinion is worthless to you and||
I know that my opinion is worthless to you and I've done nothing to earn otherwise, but seriously, if you are doing this for a job or networking or even anything that promises to pay off at anytime in the future career-wise, just wear the Michigan polo and some khakis. Jerseys are already a polarizing thing to the general public. How do you think a potential employer looking for a professional worker would feel?
I know that this year may not be the year that you take over, but next year is the year that all of those people will become your peers and superiors, and do you want them to remember you as that nice kid who really loves Michigan, or that idiot, borderline obsessive fan who everyone thought had just accidentally wandered into places he had no business being in?
You only get one chance to make a first impression. I'm saying this as a person who is mildly envious of the position you are in: please do not blow your one shot at this just because you wanted to wear a Michigan jersey instead of a more professional Michigan polo.

Fuck no. The vast majority of these guys want to play pro football, believe that they can play pro football, and commit to coaches like Harbaugh, Sabah, Meyer, and Les Miles under the assumption that they are going to help them get there.
Nobody commits to Urban Meyer to learn how to teach 8 year olds cursive.

There is a reason that Michigan is Michigan and Western is Western.
Michigan has had 100 years of great athletes walk through the door and play well and WIN. Without those talented athletes winning games and putting fans in seats, would Michigan even be Michigan? (Yes, coaching is important too, so why are coaches the only ones getting paid?)
I'll put this another way: If Michigan football and basketball had both won 5 straight championships, would we still be having attendance issues? Would people still be flocking to buy Michigan jerseys and helmets and other sports gear made by Nike/Adidas/UA?

And I actually may have underestimated the football cost, because I somehow forgot to include the $60 padded pants... Damn, football is expensive.
|1 year 25 weeks ago||I worked at a sporting goods||
I worked at a sporting goods store throughout college and I will definitely second that. Football is just way too expensive for some families compared to the miniscule monetary cost of soccer and lacrosse. Some of these parents would come in complaining that the school wouldn't pay for their kid's pads and helmet and I don't blame them. Those two things alone start at a $150 combined for the cheap ones and you might as well add $30 for a pair of cheap shoes (not counting the replacement pairs), and let us not forget grabbing a decent pair of gloves for $20. I mean, you're realisitcally looking at $200 for football gear compared to $25-30 for a pair of children's soccer cleats.
Factor in the current concussion health scare and I would honeslty have been shocked if attendance wasn't plummeting.

Bottom line: it just wasn't pulling in enough viewers for NBC. If it had been on cable? Sure! But not for one of the major ones. Only reason it lasted this long is because it cost NBC almost nothing to broadcast it, since it was an international production. So it was less of a "This is bleeding money" and more of a "This is costing us potential profit from a more mainstream viewer friendly show"
I definitely give NBC props for going this far and I really hope Amazon will either pick it up or sell the rights to Netflix, cause they are aching to add the show.
