Weren't there rumors of attempted defections from the men's team in South Africa? I remember because they hung in there pretty well in their first game against Brazil and then I think the defection rumors came after that game. Considering the way the rest of their games went I'm inclined to believe something was going on there. |
| 1 year 49 weeks ago | The uniforms leaked earlier |
The uniforms leaked earlier were slightly different. They did not have the small numbers on the front of the jersey, which was probably done to comply with NCAA regulations. At the time the first uniforms leaked Dave Brandon probably didn't know yet whether the NCAA would allow them to do the block 'M' on the front at all. Not to mention he obviously wasn't going to screw up the planned unveiling by saying "oh yeah, that's them" like a certain coach we know.
So let's just dial back the "flat out lied" stuff a little bit eh? At least in regards to our Athletic Director... |

The 2004-2005 team was really good, at least offensively. They were crazy inconsistent all year but went into the tournament hot and absolutely smashed Wisconsin in the first round. In the 2nd round against Colorado College (who I think might have been the #1 overall seed) they got up 3-0 right out of the gate and things could not have looked better. Unfortunately as was typical for mid-to-late-00's teams defensive lapses and shaky goaltending doomed them and they ended up blowing the game. In terms of having pure talent at forward that team was really loaded. Tambellini, Hensick, Nystrom, younger versions of Porter and Kolarik. Even the 3/4 line types on that team like Moss and Ebbett are NHL contributors now. |

Question for the students on the board from an old fart: Did the student ticket allotment not sell out this year? It is pretty frustrating that teams like Clemson (6-5 record in a worse conference, RPI in the 70's, and we beat them on their home floor) are included and we aren't, but whatever. The committee certainly isn't going to forget about us if we deserve to be in. |

Well right away from the first post I can tell this blog is going to be a must-read. A Big 10 power poll...how creative! Forget the other 10 websites where I can find the exact same thing, I'm going here first! The author's biting sense of humor will certainly be entertaining as well. Can you imagine how much it burned Iowa fans when he told them to "stick to football"? Ouch! The deep thorough analysis he does will also really enhance my knowledge of Big 10 basketball; for instance I learned that Michigan, Indiana and Penn State will all make the NIT, which will give the Big 10 two teams in that tournament. So informative! Sure the post is littered with misspellings and grammatical errors, but I mean it was his first post so I'll cut the guy some slack. I'm sure all the time he spent on research made it impossible to do any editing. All in all, this blog looks like a sure-fire winner in my book! |

Isn't it funny how when the Lions play a team without a huge national fanbase they suddenly don't have a big penalty problem anymore?? Just a coincidence I'm sure. Anyone else wonder if the Lions would still be leading the league in penalties if they weren't playing in a division with the Packers, the Bears and Brett Favre? |

Why do you even watch sports? Isn't the reason we watch to feel good when our team wins? Sure they still suck, we all know that. There is a 110% chance that had the roles been reversed the Lions would've gotten a pass interference and a roughing the passer on that 2nd down play. Although this game has been pretty well-officiated, there's always a few plays that show the calls just don't go both ways for the Lions. |

I actually think I'd rather see Clay than the other two. It's the life-cycle of Wisconsin running backs, the younger, quicker back-ups always seems more dangerous than the huge, hyped starter Back in '08 for instance I was much more worried about Clay than PJ Hill. Now the circle is complete and Clay is the heavily-hyped Heisman candidate.... and other team's fans are secretly hoping he is healthy enough to take the majority of the carries again them. |

Um....actually at the moment I'm really glad we're playing Bowling Green rather than Alabama. Maybe it's just me though.... |
| 2 years 35 weeks ago | Florida State is the perfect |
Florida State is the perfect example why there's absolutely no reason to schedule anybody decent out of conference. They went out and crushed a terrible I-AA team and still had all the morons in the media saying "look out, the 'Noles are back...now i know it was just Samford, but they looked good, blah blah blah." Then of course the next week when they play somebody good they get annihilated like always. Now I know picking on FSU is really unfair considering they're playing Oklahoma and Florida out of conference this year, if anybody deserves to play a team like Samford it's them. But if you were FSU why on earth would you schedule a team like Oklahoma when you could just crush I-AA and Sun Belt teams and the pollsters would still love you anyway?? Their conference is awful so they still have just as much of a chance of anybody to win it, and they could be sitting there in the BCS championship game. My point is, this is why college football needs some sort of play-off in the worst way, and Florida State should not be ranked. (/rant) (//get off my lawn) |

I'd put Iowa in the top 10 even though I agree with Brian and others that they may be due for a fall this year. The fact is they're a team that won a BCS game and brings back a lot of their key guys, so that should count for something in a pre-season poll. |

I was just going to say the same thing: how can "the Meth Heads" be somebody other than Iowa?? |
| 2 years 41 weeks ago | The first game against the |
The first game against the Bears will be very interesting I think. Chicago talk-radio has been putting it in the win column all summer, although they"re pretty much putting the Super Bowl in the win column too (I've never seen a fan base so deluded by some questionable off-season moves...Mike Martz and a completely un-motivated Julius Peppers are suddenly going to put your team over the top, really???) I think it could be a decent match-up for the Lions though, yes our secondary sucks but so do the Bears receivers, and it's not like Martz is going to attempt to establish the run so our D-line should be able to tee off on Cutler. If the Lions manage to get some early points on the board and force the Bears to play from behind I think they can take it. Then again, maybe I'm the most deluded fan in the NFL to think the Lions can beat anybody on the road...I guess that's August for you! |
| 2 years 41 weeks ago | I think people are confusing |
I think people are confusing your suggestion of going back to the Fab 5-era shorts with the bigger block "M" (which I agree with) vs. that absolute nightmare of a uniform we had in Jamal Crawford's year which had the block "M" on the actual jersey above the number. By the way, how great is it that Jordan Dumars looks exactly like his old man? |
| 2 years 41 weeks ago | They do get back RB Jewel |
They do get back RB Jewel Hampton, who was going to be the starter until he was injured prior to the season last year. Iowa is a team that really does not have a lot of holes on paper, although I agree that Stanzi is maybe a little overrated. The good news is we somehow kept it close last year on the road and maybe we won't give up 3rd and 10+ conversions every damn time this year??? Please???? |
| 2 years 41 weeks ago | We better hope Crist |
We better hope Crist struggles because if he's competent Notre Dame's offense is going to be really tough to stop. Very few secondaries in the country (much less ours) are going to be able to match up with Floyd and Kamara (sp?) on the outside and don't forget they still have Rudolph in the middle. Plus they probably won't be shooting themselves in the foot with their playcalling as much anymore. Of course our offense should match up well with their defense again this year, but with the game in South Bend it's going to be extremely difficult to get out of there with a win I think. All the more reason we really need to beat UCONN in the opener. |

| 2 years 46 weeks ago | Truer words have never been |
Truer words have never been spoken...the MLS team names are just awful. There's got to be a middle ground between ridiculous American-style team names (Seattle Sounders, Columbus Crew) and the sadly pathetic attempts at copying the big European clubs (Real Salt Lake, DC United) but most of the teams have not found it. LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire aren't bad, but the others....yeesh. All the good players in the world aren't going to make anyone respect the MLS with team names like that. At least the Tampa Bay Mutiny aren't around anymore, that one was probably the worst. |

The talent pool is fine, probably unmatched by anyone save maybe Brazil in terms of athletic ability and population even with the competition from other sports. There are a lot of people in this country. The US soccer program just needs more time to develop, it really only started about 20 years ago. The sport is getting far more exposure than ever before on major networks and in the media. It's really only a matter of time - twenty years, tops, I would say - before the US is consistently on the Brazil/Germany/Argentina level. |

Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The book that the movie "Gettysburg" is based off of, very moving. If you like thoughtful, intelligent sci-fi (and based off of the responses so far, I think a lot of you do.) Hyperion and The Terror by Dan Simmons. Two great reads in very different genres (sci-fi and historical fiction) by one of my favorite authors. |

I think the point where Hunwick was just the starting goalie rather than the adorable walk-on pretty much already happened by the NCAA tournament. Both games in that tournament we didn't exactly have the greatest defensive effort in front of him and Hunwick was still very good. In my mind the job is his until he falters. |
| 2 years 50 weeks ago | Agreed...while the back-up |
Agreed...while the back-up was terrible in the Northwestern game by the OSU game he was playing great and is probably a better pure passer than Stanzi. Clayborn is much more indispensible to the Hawkeyes, he makes turns them from a respectable defense to an elite defense. |

| 2 years 51 weeks ago | Well maybe old Bob knows |
Well maybe old Bob knows something about soccer after all. Count me as one of the Findlay-over-Ching second guessers that feels a little foolish at the moment. I've got a big plate of crow warming up in the microwave, but I think I'm not quite ready to eat it yet. If Findlay actually plays like that in the real games I'll be happily chowing down. As far as the starting 11 goes I always assumed that Dempsey would have to go up front in an effort to get the best 11 guys on the field, and gun to my head I'd still bet that's the case against England. I really wouldn't be shocked though he does put one of the forwards up front and moves Dempsey back. Dempsey's always seemed more comfortable in midfield and the fact that Bradley put 3 faster strikers on the roster over other deserving candidates indicates to me that pairing one of them with Altidore is what he ultimately wants to do. |
| 2 years 51 weeks ago | Penn State ahead of Wisconsin |
Penn State ahead of Wisconsin is pretty surprising, and I have no idea why Iowa isn't in the top 10. Oklahoma at #1 is probably just to create controversy. Steele's research is second only to Brian but he's still in the business of selling magazines, so sometimes he's got to Cowherd/Bayless it up to create some buzz. |

| 3 years 1 week ago | It's not just hockey, places |
It's not just hockey, places like south Florida and Phoenix are really just bad sports markets in general. So much of the population of those areas are transplants, they don't identify with the teams in their new areas. Plus there's a lot more to do than watch sports. Look at the Dolphins, Marlins, Diamondbacks, Heat...even in so-called "Southern sports" absolutely nobody cares about the local teams. This goes double for a sport like hockey that isn't nearly as popular to begin with. The NHL needs to get the hell out of Phoenix, Nashville, Florida and Atlanta, Columbus, pretty all the Southern markets other than California and Dallas. Hockey will never succeed there. I'd say put one team in Winnipeg, maybe a team back in Quebec or Hartford and contract the rest. The NHL really needs about 4-5 less teams so the talent isn't so diluted. |
| 3 years 1 week ago | Yes, think about recruiting. |
Yes, think about recruiting. It doesn't matter how good your reasons are, you can't sell your guy out. The #1 thing blue-chip recruits are looking at in a school is how that program can prepare them for the next level. If they think a coach might - for any reason, justified or not - speak negatively of them to NFL teams, then they WILL NOT attend that school. Michigan's recruiting will fall off the cliff it's already hanging over if Rodriguez gets the reputation as a coach who would be willing to do that. Rodriguez should deny this to the death and pray the Bengals or another NFL team doesn't confirm Trent's story. |

| 3 years 10 weeks ago | Hunwick actually looks pretty |
Hunwick actually looks pretty respectable tonight. Let's hope he gets his confidence up because I'm sure it will be a big difference playing on the road next week. |
| 3 years 11 weeks ago | I think you're being a little |
I think you're being a little generous to Bradley and a little hard on Torres but otherwise solid analysis. I would've loved to have seen Holden play the whole game, just have a hope his injury isn't serious. Another injury is just the last thing we need right now. |
| 3 years 11 weeks ago | Think any of the fringe guys |
Think any of the fringe guys helped their cause tonight? Certainly not Bornstein or Findley. Beaseley I thought was pretty decent, I'd bring him to South Africa if he stays healthy. That might've been it. Also, Donovan out wide? Just never seems to work, I feel like he needs to be in the middle where he can get the ball more. |

It is comforting to know that even when we have our worst football team ever, our worst hockey team in decades, and our most disappointing basketball team in a while we can always count on demolishing Minnesota. |
| 3 years 11 weeks ago | I think a guy that obviously |
I think a guy that obviously doesn't have the most pressure on the team but nobody's mentioned yet is Stonum. He showed some flashes last year (Notre Dame, Michigan State) but disappeared down the stretch. If our offense is going to be elite this year we need somebody to become that Manningham/Braylon type playmaker and I think Stonum is the best bet for that. Plus of course if he can't do it there's about 20 freshman wide receivers ready to try and take his place.... |
| 3 years 11 weeks ago | Good list for the most part |
Good list for the most part and a really interesting read. Amazing how good these guys get at such early ages. It did seem to me like there were a few too many strikers though, and definitely some guys that were there based on reputation rather than current skill level, Henry and Ballack for instance. I'd put Donovan over either of those two. |

Ok....this might seem awful but I'm just going to ask anyway: Does anyone else think they just gave that Canadian chick the bronze in figure skating because her mom died? She was pretty bad, especially compared to the two American girls. |

Sasha (not going to make an attempt at his last name) looks really good so far....I'd like to see him make the team but it's getting to be a pretty crowded midfield. Casey is trying too hard, he needs to relax and stay onside. |

This is good to see...usually when there are city rankings in just about any category Detroit is always last. Sometimes I wonder if they even bother doing any research beforehand or just put Detroit in last automatically. |

I dunno, the Barn is pretty crappy. Feels really small, old and high school-ish. Granted Williams has a great atmosphere when the place is rocking, but it's not all that nice of a facility. |

Those Daily hockey liveblogs are even worse luck than the basketball liveblogs last year. |
| 3 years 13 weeks ago | I disagree that this game was |
I disagree that this game was a positive for Crosby...he was invisible most the game and he only scored the game winner after missing an earlier shot in the shoot-out. There were several 5-6 minute stretches during the game when I wondered if he had even taken a shift, his line clearly isn't Babcock's main scoring line. Good player obviously but he just doesn't dominate the game the way Ovechkin does...I think at this point the debate over which one is better is hardly even a question anymore. Have to say Brodeur was impressive though, neither goal was his fault and he was money in the shoot-out. I was a little surprised they chose him over Fleury but so far that choice is looking pretty good. |

Classic Big 10 reffing...one controversial call goes against the home team and now every call will go against us in OT. |
| 3 years 14 weeks ago | I was amazed with how the |
I was amazed with how the Gophers stuck to the press even when we absolutely killed it again and again in the 2nd half. Why not sit back and clog the middle...make Michigan beat you with an outside shot?? I still think Tubby is a great coach but his stubbornness cost them the game tonight. Anyway kudos to Morris, as well as Douglass and Novak for stellar defense and rebounding. Maybe not a huge win in the grand scheme of things but I'm certainly less pessimistic about the Big Ten tournament/next season than I was before tonight. |
| 3 years 14 weeks ago | It's unbelievable how Big 10 |
It's unbelievable how Big 10 officials get influenced by the crowd. The second the crowd gets on the refs we get an absolute flood of fouls called on Michigan. We've seriously gotten 5 in the last minute of play! |

| 3 years 14 weeks ago | Colts 35, Saints 17. Favre |
Colts 35, Saints 17. Favre sliced up the Saints pass defense easily and Manning is much better than Favre. Plus no chance in the hell the Colts turn it over like the Vikes did. I hate Manning and I'd love to see the Saints win, but I don't think it's going to happen. |
| 3 years 15 weeks ago | The "running from police" |
The "running from police" comment is really unacceptable, he should be fired for that. What's sad though is it's not really any worse than any number of things he's said over the years....I just wonder how in the world he still has a job? |

The Sportscenter guy was laughing while he was reporting the story, and at one point goes "are we really talking about this..." Yup, it's going to be a loooooong off-season. |
| 3 years 16 weeks ago | Honestly I thought overall we |
Honestly I thought overall we got the better of the calls slightly. We were really bumping their guards on their drives and it rarely got called. A little frustrating that Manny got thrown out last year for the same thing that Lucas did today, and apparently according to the rules Lucas should have been tossed. It was clearly inadvertent though so think it's the right call not to throw somebody out for that. Just makes what happened to Manny that much more frustrating. The grab at the end will never, ever be called. Great play call by Beilein though and executed perfectly by Douglass on the pass. Just bad luck it didn't go in (what else is new?) Bottom line: If Michigan had brought the same amount of heart in all our bad losses that we did against MSU, UCONN and Kansas we would be in great position to make the tournament. |

| 3 years 16 weeks ago | The problem with doing the |
The problem with doing the college OT system in the NFL is that the kickers are too damn good. Anything under 50 yards is pretty easy for most guys. It would just end up being a FG kick-off. Still better than what they have now though. I like the idea of a 10-minute quarter, there's still an advantage for the team that wins the toss but not as much. The system as it is right now has to go. I hate Favre and the Vikings as much as the next guy but it's just so unfair that the game is essentially decided by a coin flip (unless Marty Morningweg is your coach!) Hopefully this game is a catalyst for changing the rule. |

Ok I looked it up. From the point when we went up 39-30 with 9 minutes left to the point when they went ahead 47-43 we were called for seven fouls, Wisconsin was called for 1. Ugh. |
| 3 years 17 weeks ago | I'm pretty sure Wisconsin |
I'm pretty sure Wisconsin didn't pick up a single foul from about 8 minutes left until 1 minute left (when the game was essentially over.) In that same stretch Michigan got called for around 8. There's no point even going on the road to play a team with roughly equal talent in the Big 10, you won't win. Just save the plane fare and forfeit. |

I am so sick of the Jared Allen love-fest. What he did off the field was easily as bad as Pac-Man or Chris Henry or any of those other guys...does anyone remember that anymore? No, instead he got traded to a contender and is now just a big lovable party animal! Funny you don't hear anyone saying that about Pac-Man, Plaxico and Braylon do you? No need to state the obvious truth as to why he gets a free pass. Just sickening. But yes, yes, he is a damn good football player. It's going to be really tough for New Orleans to block him I think. |

I think last night was a compelling argument for why the Big 10 needs to move their schedule back later in November if they want to perform better in bowl games. Wisconsin played that late game at Hawaii this year, and they looked really sharp last night. Miami on the other hand looked rusty and out-of-sync on offense. |
| 3 years 20 weeks ago | I think this is a good |
I think this is a good match-up for OSU actually. If Boise State was too physical in the trenches for Oregon then they're really not going to like playing the Bucks. I think this game will resemble that game a lot, Oregon's offense line gets dominated and the backs can never get anything going. And if the post-game resembles the Boise State game... well then we're all winners. |
| 3 years 21 weeks ago | Watching the Texas-MSU |
Watching the Texas-MSU game...anyone else getting annoyed by the clearly biased Texas PA announcer? I'm sure he wants Texas to win, but does he have to say "that's his FOURTH foul" when an MSU guy picks up a foul? It just sounds so amateur. I know Crisler's guy sometimes does that ("basket by MANNY HARRIS") but I really hope he never stoops to this level. Makes me appreciate the PA guys at Yost and Michigan Stadium, that's how it should be done. |

Seriously...how is it that every night the Big 10 Network has 3 games like Ohio State vs. Southwest Ohio Tech or Northwestern vs. Des Moines School for the Blind....and yet half of Michigan's games haven't been on any channel this year? |
| 3 years 24 weeks ago | The US still has just as much |
The US still has just as much chance as anyone of getting South Africa right? I feel like that's really all we can hope for, any of the other seven seeded teams are pretty much equally deadly now that France isn't going to be in the seeded pot. The African teams and the South American teams going in the same pot is unfortunate but fair, really. |
| 3 years 26 weeks ago | I think he's right in that |
I think he's right in that Michigan's biggest and probably only advantage is OSU not quite playing at full intensity having already clinched the Rose Bowl. Not to mention the fact that they've won so many in a row in this series. To me this game reminds me a bit of 2004. Michigan had already clinched the Rose Bowl and just never got going on the road. Hopefully the same thing happens to OSU tomorrow. Probably unlikely considering how prepared Tressel teams always seem to be in this rivalry, but we can hope right?! |

I remember a few years ago they were only going to ABC/ESPN games even if it clearly wasn't one of the better games of the week, they must've gotten a lot of heat over that. I think pushing their own agenda is one of ESPN's biggets problems - one of the reasons the Daulerio's of the world get readers - so I'm glad they aren't doing it here. |

| 3 years 32 weeks ago | My post had nothing to do |
My post had nothing to do with the Twins team, it was about their fans. Obviously I have nothing but respect for the way the Twins team won out down the stretch...very impressive without Morneau. My point about the white guys is that they are who the fans always talk about as the "heart and soul of the team". The guys like Punto, Cuddyer, Kubel, Nathan, etc. I won't argue that those guys are very good players who had great stretch runs, but who's to say they don't go out and get drunk and fight with their wives? Twins fans, that's who. Because "Twins players would never do that. We're different." So negbang away if you want, but I'm going to enjoy the shadenfreude of the Yankees massacre, just like I enjoy it when Utah, Notre Dame, Duke, or any of the other holier than thou teams gets crushed. |
| 3 years 32 weeks ago | I'm not sure who to root for here... |
I have to say, at least Yankees fans know what they are. Twins fans are like Packers, Jazz, Duke, Notre Dame (etc.) fans....they think they have this perfect, uncorrupted team. Lots of scrappy white guys, lots of fundamentals, lots of hustle. I know a few Twins fans, and the thing they all said after the Cabrera thing was "oh, a Twins player would never do that." Not to mention the outrage when the golden boy Joe Mauer was caught clearly stealing signs. "Oh no, you're wrong, a Twins player would never do that. We play the game the right way..." Ugh.... I think I'll enjoy the shadenfreude of the next two Yankees beatdowns. |

Anyone remember the Cal-MSU game about about 7 or 8 years ago when Cal pulled a trick play that involved Kyle Boller catching a pass from a receiver? Well you may not remember the play, but I'm sure you can remember Pam Ward's description of the play, which instantly became a staple sound clip of talk radio shows throughout the metro Detroit area: "HE'S THROWING THE BALL BACK TO BOLLER!!!" Ever since then Ward has been refused to get too excited about any play no matter how improbable. I assume this was a direct order from her superiors after the widespread mocking of her call of the Boller play (which I think was one of her first games announcing.) |

I'm going with 45%, I think their offense is a pretty good match-up for us but on the other hand their D-line might just eat us alive like they did to Penn State. |

It might've just been time for South America. I wouldn't argue with that. On the other hand if Madrid wins then you have to figure something fishy is going on. Samarach (sp?) was very shady when he was in charge of the IOC and he's heavily involved in Madrid's bid. |
