1 year 15 weeks ago Orange Bowl

My wife, son and I went to the Orange Bowl as we just happened to be in the area.  As an experience, it was much closer to an NFL game than to a college football game.  We were practically deaf walking out of the place from all the loud music, etc.  And the time between plays was unreal.  Even worse than a typical game.

My son (he's 8) wanted to leave and "watch the game at home" almost immediately.  Other than the actual football, which he loves, about the only other things he really liked were the band and when the FSU horse fell over.

Something is going to give, because the fan experience, even in Michigan Stadium, is going downhill.

I don't think you should use an ancient clipping as support for "golden maize" when it also describes Michigan blue as "azure blue."

This one was the opener against Virginia (and Tiki Barber) in which Michigan went down 17-0, scored 3 TD's in the 4th Q and on the last one had to wait for a ref to signal whether Mercury was inbounds or not.  I may or may not have sprained something in the celebration afterward.

5 years 39 weeks ago My take

These are my take on the % chances of M winning:

Alabama - 20%

Air Force - 100%

UMass - 100%

ND - 45%

Purdue - 95%

Illinois - 95%

MSU - 70%

Nebraska - 60%

Minny - 100%

Northwestern - 85%

Iowa - 80%

Ohio - 40%

Expected value, 8.9 wins rounded up to 9.

5 years 40 weeks ago BSD

This is the only truly acceptable response to the current situation from a Penn State sports blog right now (some derivation of these core concepts.)

1.  What happened was horrible and unconscionable

2.  Joe Paterno could've stopped it, didn't, and is therefore morally culpable in the single biggest test of his character he ever faced

3.  The Penn State community needs to perform a serious evaluation of the culture that got us to this point so that it never happens again

That's it.  Anything else at this time is pretty much unjustifiable.

Also, I take zero schadenfreude in this situation.  Zero.  All I think through any of this stuff as I read it is "what if that were my son?"  There is no joy in any of this, in any way.

5 years 46 weeks ago Not surprising

As long as you have a minimum price worked in somehow, it's the best way to extract maximum revenue.   I hadn't realized it was already being used though.

5 years 46 weeks ago This will be tried someday

Someday soon in our internet age, you will login to your account.  You will type in the largest amount you would be willing to pay for next season's tickets, along with everyone else.  The highest 114,000 per seat bids will get the seats in the order of $'s bid (highest $ bid gets 50 yard line, 20 rows up, etc.)

The end.

(We're headed there, deep down you all know it.)

5 years 46 weeks ago Desmond Howard

Not to state the obvious, but Desmond's Heisman campaign was amazing.  I remember watching just thinking that every play should be run to him and he wouldn't ever drop a pass.  Grbac to Howard was the whole season that year.

5 years 46 weeks ago Lone Survivor

Anyone interested in the Seals should read Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell.  Great book about Seal training (these players got off easy!) and a mission that went wrong.  Highly recommended.

5 years 46 weeks ago He is an excellent writer

I actually think this is the perfect spot for Albom to write.  He is a really good writer, and while he doesn't cover the day to day of sports very well he captures the whole of something like  Lidstrom's career perfectly.  Albom has perspective, and he can capture something human in just about any worthy story.  He couldn't do a UFR for anything, but he is certainly worthy to eulogize a life or a career.

Didn't think when I woke up today "I'm going to have to defend Mitch Albom a little", but there you go.

5 years 47 weeks ago As a victim myself

Having your tonsils and adenoids removed is a horrible, hellish experience.  No joke.  You can't really sleep, can't really eat, can't take the pain meds you want to take (only Tylenol, no aspirin or Advil.)  Your throat bleeds pretty much constantly for a week... It really, really sucks.  I wasn't right for 2 weeks myself.  The no sleeping is the worst.

I thought the same thing before I got my surgery, "I'll just eat ice cream for a couple days, this'll be a snap."  Not a snap.  Horrible & hellish.  I'm shuddering just thinking about it.

On the bright side it does solve the problem of getting sore throats constantly, but don't hammer the kid for that.  It sucks.

5 years 48 weeks ago You forgot

You forgot to mention "contact lens wearer" which I still find one of the most perplexing things ever.  How did/do we not test everyone's eyes once a year?  Dukes, York, Chesson, get thee to an optometrist please.

5 years 49 weeks ago It's all about travel

I still say that a B1G fan who is facing (for example):

Indianapolis in early December for the B1G Championship game

Pasadena on January 1st for the semifinal

Miami on January 14th for the National Championship

or an SEC fan who is also facing

Atlanta / New Orleans / Miami

Isn't going to make all 3 of those games.  Unless you are retired, a 1%'er, and have an extremely accomodating wife, you aren't going to all 3 of those games.

TV ratings will be through the roof, but come on.  I was at the Sugar Bowl, and I couldn't believe that a 10-2 Michigan team playing in an awesome city after three years of misery couldn't sell out the building.  As much as I loved the experience, there's no way I could justify two of those trips in one year.

These AD's and conference commissioners are crazy.

5 years 49 weeks ago IU

How is Indiana not #1?  They have nothing to be excited about, ever.  There is no joy involved at all.

While PSU is going through a tough time, they'll be back.  There is hope.  But IU?  Always sucked, always will suck.  (They don't even have a single football recruit at this point.)

It's a football disaster area.

5 years 49 weeks ago Of course I would

In my opinion the health risks associated with football are being inflated by the NFL's current issues.  From Pop Warner to the NFL there is a vast difference of experience.  The NFL has the largest people on the planet hitting each other nearly continuosly through training camps, countless practices, 20 games, etc.  It's a lot more hitting than even college, by a lot bigger, stronger men.

My son has zero chance to ever play in the NFL, and probably not much chance to play in college, at least under scholarship.  His risk of serious injury is virtually nil.  Of course I would allow him to play, and as far as his talent would allow him to progress.

The benefits of playing in a structured team sport, learning a role, discipline, etc. far outweigh any risk.

5 years 49 weeks ago Wow

I clicked through just because I didn't quite believe the concept.  But it's even worse than you'd think.  She probably knows that there's no crying in baseball, but I think this other team doesn't realize that.

5 years 49 weeks ago Bronze Uni's

Remarkable how well this mascot works with those horrid Nike Pro Combat bronze atrocities.

5 years 49 weeks ago Rest in Peace

Given my pic, I figured I should add that I hope he has

5 years 50 weeks ago Vada Murray

Didn't Vada Murray suffer from lung cancer?  Apologies, but I didn't understand that reference.

5 years 52 weeks ago We all know why

This is a classic case of using stupid reasons to justify the real reason that you can't say.  And that is that warm weather teams don't want to potentially play at a cold weather site.  They all currently mostly play near home and don't want to give that up.

I think the B1G should stand firm.  Home games are the only way.

One other thought, who would want to go see a Semifinal, then turn around and head to the Championship Game a week or two later?  People will wait and see if they can just go to the Championship Game and semifinals might actually not sell out (even though the TV ratings would be through the roof.)

6 years 1 week ago He's doing a Hoke

Just as Hoke teaches the fundamentals every year and doesn't assume that everyone remembers everything, Seth is doing the same.  I say thanks, even as someone who has watched football for almost 30 years now I appreciated the refresher.

6 years 7 weeks ago Just hope for...

Just hope we win the B1G title.  That's all you have to say.  However that works out, hey, stuff happens.

6 years 7 weeks ago Plays too

Since the whole point of this endeavour will be to reflect back in a few years on what we have loved in Michigan sports, I would also suggest we strongly consider adding 3-5 plays as well as players.  The players need to be honored, certainly.  But consider the 2015 you looking back and reading a write up these specific plays (just off the top of my head):

2012 Football - ND v MIchigan - Robinson to Gallon - The Cloaking Device

2007 Football - Wisconsin v Michigan - Threet rumbles for 50+ yards

2006 Football - Michigan v Penn State - Branch destroys QB

2011 Football - Michigan v ND - Robinson goes 84 yards

2012 Football - Nebraska v Michigan - Mike Martin forces a pitch on an option play as NT

2012 Basketball - Ohio V Michigan - Trey Burke scores over Sullinger

Etc.  You get the idea.

Again, this is not at all to take away from the players, but also to capture those specific moments that made us all giddy beyond belief.  I would probably go back and read that page once a month.

We could also include the UFR of the play to give it that MGoBlog connection (or have the best UFR description of any play.)

6 years 12 weeks ago Air Force

Off we go, into the wild blue yonder, climbing high, into the sun...

6 years 18 weeks ago Coin flips are too arbitrary

It'll never happen, but the OT order should be decided by what yard line you are willing to start from (keeping in mind that the team to go first will start from the 25.)  So would you make it the 40?  Your own 35?  Removes the arbitrariness and adds another element of strategy.  How much is knowing what you have to do worth to that team in that OT?

The type of auction could be fun too.  It could be that each head coach gives their auction number to a different linesman who then communicate it to the head ref and the winner is the furthest back.  That would be my preference.  But a straight up back and forth between captains would also be interesting (it might take a bit more time which is why it's not my preference.)

The NFL OT could probably replace the OT coin-flip with a similar auction and still keep a sudden death OT going.  It would take luck out of it.

6 years 30 weeks ago Record

I'm curious to know what Bacon thinks Michigan's 2008 record would have been if Lloyd had stayed.  Do Mallet, Boren, Arrington, etc. still leave?  Does that matter?

6 years 31 weeks ago No agenda here

But I want to point out that "the touchdowns are red herrings" is going against that whole "results based charting service" attitude.  You're clearly looking through some tinted lenses at that point.

And before you jump all over me, I want Borges to put out an offense as close to last year's as possible, so I am in agreement with the overall theme.  But you can't just say "ignore the fact that all our points came from under center."

6 years 48 weeks ago Let me ask this...

I think this practice is despicable, but only because they yank the scholarship.  Frankly, I'd be fine with this:

1.  Coach brings kid into room and tells him he is off the football team as he's not going to see the field

2.  Agrees to continue a scholarship at the school, just not a football scholarship.  Also agrees the kid can be on the practice squad (or whatever is allowable without counting against the 85 limit)

3.  Has no problem (obviously) if the kid wants to transfer and try to make a team somewhere else.

Now there is a way that big-time boosters can put their money to work, scholarships for kids that tried but just couldn't make the team.

Am I a jerk for thinking that?  If so, why?

8 years 22 weeks ago Just a great post

Loved it. I'd add:

Michigan Football is the pack. The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

8 years 30 weeks ago M Fans

M fans tend to be more independent and less into Groupthink than some other fanbases, at least when I went to school there. For example, it's easy to get ND students to ALL wear a green tee, they are open to Groupthink from the womb.

Michigan students, and particularly alumni, just tend to have a higher percentage that says, "screw your edict, I'm wearing what I want!" It's an independent streak that I happen to like. (Frankly, I'm amazed that the Maize-Outs have been participated in and as successful as they have been.)

Just my .02

8 years 35 weeks ago Love the concept

How about:

A: Then why does it say "aksepted"?

B: EPIC FAIL

8 years 35 weeks ago A rebuttal

I started typing "Uniqenam you ignorant slut" but just barely stopped.

Our mascot gets so many things right, here's a small helpful list:

1. It is unique. There aren't any other Wolverines in major colleges.
2. It actually has something to do with our state, the Wolverine State. It's not some generic "tiger" or "bulldog"
3. We don't have someone in a corked head running around, which is a good thing
4. A wolverine is a vicious animal with a mean streak, which is what you want in a mascot (you want a banana slug?)
5. It's my handle (enough said)

So I would counter that it's actually the BEST nickname in sports, or at least in the running.

8 years 40 weeks ago Benefit

Isn't swearing one of the perks of being a football coach? Like 401k, health care plan, free tickets, and I can swear like a sailor and everyone shrugs it off. Awesome!

I think you're looking at this the wrong f-ing way.

8 years 43 weeks ago How about this?

Let's rename all the positions. My suggestions:

Nose Tackle - "Tip of the Bloody Spear"

Defensive Ends - Legion of Doom

Mike LB - The Reaper

Sam LB - Souldrinker

Will LB - "Weakside" doesn't cut it. Not tough enough. This should be the Abominable Linebacker

Deathbacker - Deathbacker

CB's - Anthrax

Safeties - Rabid Snarling Dogs

8 years 43 weeks ago Individal Games

Rationally, you might be right.

Given that, I really think it does matter if you get an individual game wrong, if you work in the athletic department. Say you overprice Eastern Michigan, and those individual game tickets don't sell. Now you're faced with explaining that. Say you underprice Ohio State, or a hypothetical Texas matchup and the tickets sell out much faster than anticipated. Or worse, *don't* sell out.

I agree with you that I'd like to ultimately see better matchups. I'm just trying to relate what the folks in the athletic department are thinking about (not just at U-M, but all of them in college athletics.) This is their job, and they aren't about to do anything risky or rock the boat without a mandate from up high.

Look at the infamous Halo. How innocuous did that probably sound on paper? But Goss almost certainly lost his job at least partly over that.

8 years 44 weeks ago Forecasting

I think part of the reason this isn't done is forecasting the price for every game gives you a lot more of an opportunity to get it wrong. Any type of administrators hate getting it wrong. If they set the price too high for game X and didn't sell out, for example, that would look really bad. So it is much easier to set the price for a season and end up in the same place.

Not to mention, look at how many years the Big Ten has had 2 teams in the BCS. That (in the minds of the AD's) validates the current scheduling strategy as a good one. We get screwed by seeing less good games, but they keep those revenue streams up.

8 years 44 weeks ago The difference

Was also after going 3-9 as Chrisgo pointed out.

I guess you are the Jim Rome-type Brian was referring to, you seem to have written this post with your hair on fire.

8 years 44 weeks ago Penn State

We have Instant Replay bascially because of JoePa's whining during our 11 year role as their Maize and Blue Overlords. It then spread to the rest of college football.

8 years 44 weeks ago :)

I found this hilarious.

8 years 45 weeks ago That Miami game

I almost never miss Michigan football, ever. The list of what I've missed since 1984 is extremely short, and only includes parts of 4-5 games.

We were up by 2 TD's in the 4th, and I had something going on that was important (who can remember now?) I remember distinctly thinking "well, we've got this one in the bag, and even if Miami were to come back, would I really want to see that? Ha ha. That's not gonna happen." I quit watching and left.

So I missed it.

8 years 45 weeks ago Yep

You just found #11.

8 years 45 weeks ago Good call

I was so young that I only remember using all my nonexistent telepathic powers to somehow make that FG *miss*. Needless to say, my powers stink.

8 years 50 weeks ago But

Not necessarily why

8 years 50 weeks ago Bowl money

The Big Ten has about 6-7 teams go to Bowls every year, which means they split up a decent sized pot. ND would get that guaranteed every year, but still probably come out a touch behind over a long span.

OTOH - Wouldn't they pick up a decent amount from the Big Ten Network, assuming it makes money? And money from a conference championship game (which would suck, but would definitely happen.)

8 years 50 weeks ago One Thing

It doesn't shoot down your theory or anything, but I don't think Ryan Mallet would be worried about starting over Tom Brady much less Mustain. That kid had ego to burn.

8 years 50 weeks ago Good post

Well written and well thought-out. The concept of him being a return specialist is interesting. Maybe RR will give us something next Feb to indicate his thinking, maybe we'll have to wait longer to find out.

Personally, it still seems like a reach to me. I hope the kid proves me way, way wrong.

8 years 50 weeks ago Thank you, thank you

Thank you for proving my point so much that it actually made me shake my head in amazement.

8 years 50 weeks ago I'll do it

Allow me to sum up your position:

1. Nobody should follow recruiting
2. For God's sake, if they do, they shouldn't have any opinions on it
3. If they have opinions on it, under no circumstances should those opinions conflict with the coaching staff, who is so right that they are unquestionable in all things great and small
4. Opinions should be kept to themselves unless they agree 100% completely with ShockFX (if they are only 99%, response on that 1% will be swift and severe, with a lot of !!! and CAPS to emphasize frustration with ALL THESE DAMN IDIOTS!!!!) - This one is from your general comments, not the OP
5. In recruiting, there is a rigid, inflexible order to things and the Michigan supporter should not aspire to be better than (I'm guessing here) 15th? Complaints are only acceptable at 20th and below. (Again, could have the number wrong, you were a little vague on your actual expectations.)
6. Finally, you believe that posting about people who post on recruiting is somehow less of a waste of time than posting on said recruiting. (Otherwise, why bother?)

That about cover it?

8 years 50 weeks ago Hmmm

I'm not sure I understand your point. Michigan has always been a recruiting powerhouse, certainly top 1-2 in the Big Ten most years. USC hasn't always been where they are, nor have LSU or Florida. It's somewhat cyclical. But even RR's first 2 classes were really good, good enough that I don't understand why he'd have to take a Dileo in May. That was my only point.

8 years 50 weeks ago Well

My understanding is that the O-line is always running to the line of scrimmage, but it would be in the 4th quarter that it would really hurt the morale of the defense. (In a "we're so in shape, we're still running when we don't even need too!" way.)

They were certainly running in the spring game.

8 years 50 weeks ago Specialized

By specialized, I'm really referring to recruiting. That is, they are looking for certain athlete types to fill roles, more so than a typical offense, specifically to generate a recruiting edge by running a particular system. I think the spread is a fine system, but when they first trotted it out, it was unproven and risky. As it found success, it reduced the recruiting advantage because more and more schools were going after the same kids.

Imagine if you and I sat down to design an offense based on utilizing kids that other schools might overlook. There's a good chance that it would be weaker than the norm. But maybe not. That's why they play the games.

8 years 51 weeks ago No

What I am saying is that the system will evolve and Dileo will, in all likelihood, be less effective in whatever it evolves to.

Maybe he will be an amazing player. But I think the chances of that are slim, and based on that can't understand why the staff accepted his commitment so early or didn't make it conditional. From where we sit with what we know, it seems like a reach.

I happen to think this one recruit was a reach, and explained why I thought the staff made that decision. This is clearly a debatable point that two reasonable people can disagree on.

8 years 51 weeks ago Misunderstood

I wasn't making any judgements about the spread. I was stating that any offense geared to use different players than the "norm" could be inferior, could being the operative word. (That offense could also be on the cutting edge of offense, in an evolutionary sense.)

If a staff decided to pursue a wishbone, they would likely have an easier go of finding solid players to fill it, but it might not be successful. That's the risk.

The point is running a specialized offense increases both the chances of obtaining quality players for that system, and the chances the defense can figure out a way to stop that particular system.

8 years 51 weeks ago Let me expand one thing

I never intended to imply that the coaching staff didn't realize they could get better athletes with more defined (less risky) potential. They clearly understand that. What I'm implying is that *they still believe Dileo, et. al. are premium players in their system*. They have yet to make that shift into what the best system is for the level of athlete they can now recruit. It will take a couple of seasons before those two variables stabilize.

For example, does Smith really know what a potential Michigan QB is? Not yet. He won't know until Forcier is a senior. The point being, more changes than just the kid. The kids capabilities drive the system, and vice-versa. Right now, the coaches are working with an outdated model of what the offense is. I believe that's why they offered this guy, AND why I think it was a mistake. They believe he is perfect for a system that will be outdated when he's ready to play in it.

I really believe in 2 years, RR will scratch his head and wonder why they recruited him, but right now he would say "look at him! He's an ideal slot receiver for what we run!"

8 years 51 weeks ago Thanks

It is really hard to be critical without sounding like you want to run them out of town. I really like this coaching staff, but they occasionally do something here and there that drives me batty. This was an attempt to explain why I think they were wrong without coming off like I want a change or something. I don't, I just want them to adjust their thought process a bit. Oh, and vent in a constructive way.

8 years 51 weeks ago Hmmm

I'm not entirely sure that is a compliment, but I'm taking it as one. Thanks.

9 years 1 week ago Paulus

I'm beginning to think "Paulus" is some foreign word meaning "one who is relentlessly overhyped."

Do you think Beano Cook will suggest he can win 4 straight Heismans until someone points out he only has one year of eligibility?

9 years 6 weeks ago ?

We have a basketball program?

Just kidding, it is great to see us finally back.

9 years 6 weeks ago Really?

You're that bottom line that purple uniforms wouldn't phase you? What about pink? What about a helmet with a whoosh style "M" on it, or just bypass that and go straight to a McDonalds logo? Hey, it's an M after all. No biggie, right?

Now I know who that picture is... it's a pre-zombie Al Davis.

9 years 9 weeks ago Mallet

Something changed, because he came to Michigan to play behind Ryan Mallet. Only fortune even thrust him into a starting role this early in his career. I kind of doubt he thought he really could unseat him. (He couldn't unseat Nick Sheridan to start the season.)

I'm not saying he was a prima donna, just that he wasn't coming to Michigan (realistically anyway) to be more than potentially a 5th year senior starter.

If you can't start the season ahead of Nick Sheridan in any system, you should rethink your NFL dreams. It is odd to have switched twice in 2 seasons. Still, hope it works out for him.

9 years 9 weeks ago Don't forget Mallet

Even more to the point, he came into the program to ride the pine behind Ryan Mallet. He only really had the potential of starting his final season, barring an injury to Mallet. Admittedly things have changed, but this isn't a kid who expected excessive amounts of playing time when he made his first transfer.

It's odd, hurts our depth chart something fierce, but I still wish him well.

9 years 9 weeks ago Threet and Mallet

Maybe I'm not recalling the timing correctly, but didn't Threet come in to essentially ride the pine and back up Ryan Mallet for 3-4 years? If so, he wasn't coming to Michigan to be a 4-year starter, that opportunity kind of fell into his lap. More likely he was planning a possible 1-year starting gig in his 5th season. Guess he's had a pretty serious change in mindset.

Of course, the new offense and terrible O-line probably helped change that mindset, but still... this is a departure from the expectations when he came in.

9 years 10 weeks ago One color number praise

I also love the one color blue numbers. It just plain looks better in every way.

Did you ever consider putting the stylized helmet design logo (the one that has the wing from the side, then 2 stripes, the top one fading away at about 11 o'clock that was on the student shirt in 2003 or 2004) on the sleeves or shoulders? That is new and looks pretty sweet. It might freshen the away jersey look while still being a nod to the most distinctive part of the uniform.

9 years 11 weeks ago USC

USC has Burfict, Fanqupo, Flournoy, Harfman, Kennard and Vekihite. Only one of those sounds SP Islander to me, and I've never heard of the other surnames before.

9 years 12 weeks ago That's why

I was sorting through Rivals, and his real first name is something less cool. Basically I saw "Adam Jones" and moved right along.

Incidentally, I also strongly considered Ray Ray Armstong, but just because I love the name Ray Ray.

9 years 12 weeks ago Last name

For me, it was the last name on that one. Maybe you live in an area awash in "Flournoy"'s, but I'd never heard that one before. It sounds medieval.

9 years 12 weeks ago Really?

I obviously didn't see that one, but that's an all time great name.

9 years 14 weeks ago Crying Children

So will Brian queue the crying children? Or will he roll with crying kittens? Or perhaps crying children holding crying kittens?

I had a pretty bad week all considered, and came to the site to hopefully have a laugh. Then I was greeted with this. It was like being kicked in the nuts with a Congressional Mandate.

9 years 22 weeks ago Coachspeak

Everything any coach says is seen through the lens of his record. The same schtick at 9-3 is a lot funnier than the same stuff at 3-9. Things can downshift from "cute" to "grating" in a hurry.

Then there's John L. Smith slapping himself, which is a fantastic blend of strange & funny no matter the record.

9 years 22 weeks ago Maybe it's just me

I gotta think we can do better than "nuh-uh."

9 years 23 weeks ago Alabama

Nitpicking, but Alabama did not go 1-12 in 1993. They went 9-3-1 on the field.

You must be counting forfeitures. Whatever RR does, it better not be racking up forfeits.

9 years 23 weeks ago I did the following diary on

I did the following diary on 2002-2007 recruiting, and it has been far less successful than you'd think.

9 years 25 weeks ago The All-Name Michigan Team

I'm sure someone has done this, and he's a first-ballot entry.

9 years 25 weeks ago Criteria

I can't say I had any hard and fast criteria for the A/B/C, it was more gut than anything.  But the minimum for "A" would be multi-year starter at their position at slightly below average or better.  Hood contributed on special teams, but without starting at all at his position, he's not even a tweener.  He would've had to be exemplary in that role to overcome not starting, and he was solid at best as a special teamer.

Put another way, what would you think if I told you current recruit Shavodrick Beaver's career would be special teamer as a Jr/Sr, makes us laugh with hall-of-fame funny name, and sporadic 5th receiver?  We wouldn't have the current enthusiasm, that's for sure.  That's a "C" in my book.

9 years 25 weeks ago Thanks!

You hit the nail on the head with what I was trying to show.  Think of all the Mallett-love that was going on, and what did all of that amount to?  Some fumbled snaps and beating ND.  There's the Michigan career all that anticipation amounted too.  The next guy has to step up.

9 years 25 weeks ago My bad on Minor

I did transpose Minor and Brown.  My bad.  Doesn't change the totals.

We could have a spirited debate on Watson, but it really wouldn't change the conclusions.  If it makes you feel any better, Gabe was one of the ones I spent the most time deciding on.  He's a strange case.  Starter, yes, but benched at one point IIRC.  Never really dominated like Alan Branch who followed him.  Perennially out of shape.

Just saying I can certainly see your point, but I decided on the whole I was unsatisfied with him.  And I didn't include being drafted one bit for anyone, only what I saw them do (or not do) in a Michigan uniform.

Thanks for the feedback.

9 years 25 weeks ago Yes it was a mistake

I just transposed the names.  Doesn't change any totals.  My bad.

9 years 25 weeks ago Only on the field

I evaluated strictly on on-the-field result for Michigan.

9 years 25 weeks ago Yep

True dat Jay.  I have high hopes for the staff, but what I'm seeing (on defense really, I expected the offense to struggle) makes me skeptical.

9 years 26 weeks ago Oh, calm down

I get it that you don't think Penn State adjusted.  I believe it was a combination of them adjusting and Sheridan not being good.  That's the only place we differ on that game.

If you don't think Illinois made successful adjustments, or think that prior games aren't relevant, that's your business.

9 years 26 weeks ago We agree on that

Sheridan is miserable.  But he doesn't play defense.  Nor has he played every 3rd quarter this season in which we only scored 7 points total (which I notice you skipped right over.)  Nor is he on the coaching staff, which ...

Wait a minute... this is your Baghdad Bob impersonation, isn't it?  Cute.

9 years 26 weeks ago I am right, unsarcastically

There are clear parallels between the two games.  Your assertion that it wasn't the other team adusting to us, but a different QB or a hurt QB, could work for Penn State but not for Illinois.  Illinois is a good counter-example to your theory because it removes the variable.  Threet was fine that whole game.  Same result, early success and then carnage.

Yes, it is possible that the PSU result was all because of Nick Sheridan, but that then opens the door for what the heck happened with the Illini?  Or we go with Occam's Razor, and say that our coaching staff isn't terribly good at adustments this season.  Maybe there isn't anything to adjust too, the team just isn't that good.

Another support for the adjustments theory... we've scored 7 points in the 3rd quarter all season.  7.  I'm not entirely sure what that says, but it certainly doesn't support the argument that our coaching staff is comprised of evil football geniuses.  They are clearly being outmaneuvered, albeit with inferior personnel and not by Bret Bielema.

9 years 26 weeks ago Forgetting Illinois?

That works for Penn Sate, but bascially the same thing happened against Illinois.   Sheridan didn't play in that one that I recall.  Same script, awesome first quarter followed by 3 quarters of carnage.

9 years 27 weeks ago I'm dumb

How could I forget the jet tracking?  That's a great point.  It cracked me up at the time that's for sure.

9 years 27 weeks ago Full disclosure

Thank you all for those kind words. I should tell you that in the late 3rd-quarter of the Toledo game, when Sheridan was in and I didn't know Threet was injured, I pitched a mini shit-fit. It was inglorious. If my kid's first word is "Fucknut" my wife is going to kill me.

Then I found out Threet was injured, and I became totally calm. That was the only frustration of the day, and then that was that.

9 years 28 weeks ago I disagree

There is no way that RR is somehow "sacrificing" 2 wins (or any wins) with bizarro, substandard playcalling to somehow install his offense in a bid for future glory. He, and every other coach and player, are trying to win the game in front of them, period.

If they are running plays that don't work in games, they most likely worked in practice. And he would run a Wisconsin ISO based offense if he thought it would win more games, which he obviously doesn't. (Even the play with Mathews lined up ineligible has some purpose in RR's mind, otherwise he wouldn't use it.)

Look, if something doesn't make sense to us, I guarantee there's still some reason for it. Might be a bad reason in our minds, but there's a purpose behind it in the coach's mind. And the purpose is always, always, always to win the game. Never to set up some future thing on the possibility that might help you later.

9 years 28 weeks ago All I can say is while you

All I can say is while you may or may not agree with the content of the gentleman's diary, it wasn't poorly written or in any way deserving of a lobotomy.  The disclaimer was his way (and lots of people do it) of saying "my perspective comes as a casual fan of the game."  Nothing wrong with that.

If you want expert analysis everytime, may I suggest you limit yourselves to posts authored by "brian" or "gsimmons".

9 years 29 weeks ago The Block M

For my .02, trying to get a block M anywhere in the logo will look forced.  It already has a distinct Michigan design in the Winged Helmet, so it's not like you have brand it to say which school it is for.

If you can fit it in and make it look natural, then you're really good.  But if you can't, then just forget about it.

9 years 29 weeks ago Everitt

I'm almost positive that was Steve Everitt.  IIRC, he broke it in the ND game, the one with The Catch.

9 years 29 weeks ago Skrepenak

See?  Just another example of a Michigan football player thrown into life with no skills living in a cardboard box.  Someone call The Ann Arbor News.

9 years 29 weeks ago Banner time

There was an inordinate amount of time invested in the banner search, and people got invested.  I admit I'm partial to the Yvgeni banner.  Consider that one my vote to ultimately replace this one.  I'm pretty sure that one's not from Flicker.

9 years 29 weeks ago Skrepenak

I remember him.  His senior year was just before I got to Ann Arbor, 1991.  He was one of the first (maybe the first) 300 pounder.  I always think of him as the "prototypical" lineman prior to John Jansen.

9 years 29 weeks ago Holding onto the ball

Minor tends to fumble a lot.  I think that's one issue, if not the pimary issue.

9 years 29 weeks ago Way better

Than the last one. You either had to lose the teeth or go all in, and I like the all in version.

My only nits at this point would be the thin blue lines that define the nose (they look drawn in and don't quite flow with the rest of the lines in the logo) and the eye shape might need to be adjusted slightly to make it look angrier.

I have to say I am a Block M guy for anything football related, but I could see this on an away hockey jersey in a couple versions.

9 years 29 weeks ago TMKYD

A message from The Man Keeping You Down:

"Ahem. Firstly, I have a titanium bidet as everyone knows platinum chaps the arse. Secondly, I have instructed my assistant to write you a strongly worded letter. Strongly. Worded. Finally, ckersh is correct about using 'pwn', I don't really know what that means. Right-o, off with you ruffians, back to your squalid little dorm rooms and duplexes."

Well, sounds like there's a three martini lunch in his future.

9 years 30 weeks ago Uhhh,

I was wondering how you knew that!  Thanks for reading.  You and Wife32 are both of my fans.

9 years 30 weeks ago Absolutely

Yeah, Cat32 isn't able to grasp the whole "it's imaginary" thing.  She will make a glorious, triumphant (and disapproving) return if I ever do another one of these.

Hope it was a funny read on a weekend our team wasn't playing anyway.

9 years 33 weeks ago Offense / offence

While "offenCe" isn't technically a misspelling (I don't believe) it isn't the typical variant when used to describe a football offenSe. This is the nth diary to use the odd alternate spelling. Am I missing some inside joke or something? It always causes me to stumble when reading over it.

Yes, I suppose I have issues. (But it did take me about ten diaries to actually post something and ask.)

9 years 34 weeks ago Outstanding

That story was outstanding! Thank you for sharing that.

9 years 34 weeks ago Well

Off the top of my head I can think of three sequels, but they're all super-hero movies.  The Dark Knight, Spiderman 2, and Superman II.  (Gotta give it up for The Phantom Zone.)

I could probably think of some others.  (Like The Wrath of Khan... how could I forget Star Trek II?)

I guarantee this sequel - Michigan 2009 will far surpass Michigan 2008.

9 years 34 weeks ago Well now

That's not exactly the Ark of the Covenant that any army bearing it cannot be defeated... but then again maybe it helped us win the games in the middle last year. Couldn't hurt.

9 years 34 weeks ago You're killing me

OK, that was really funny.  And probably verbatim what I'll be saying on Saturday.

9 years 34 weeks ago Thanks

Hmmm, maybe I should get a job in the Athletic Dept...

Go blue, and have fun at the game.

9 years 34 weeks ago Eco

I am so with you on Foucault's Pendulum.  What frustrated me was the sense when you finally got through it that you didn't gain very much but some vocabulary or jargon on the occult.  It was kinda like a Michael Crichton book where he didn't know how to end it (although unlike Crichton most of the time, he didn't go with the giant explosion.)

9 years 34 weeks ago My 3

3.  Words That Work - Frank Luntz - Interesting take on how language influences what people think.  Saw him as a guest on Real Time with Bill Mahr and could see he had some interesting things to share.

2.  Apollo: The Epic Journey To The Moon - David Reynolds / Wally Schirra - Wish I could say it was inspired by Michigan's "Space MF!" commercial, but in reality just a fascinating topic to me.  Highly recommended read of a time when we (& NASA) thought much bigger than we do now.

1.  A Feast For Crows - George RR Martin - I don't typically read fantasy, but this series has a hard edge to it.

Currently reading - The Gaudi Key - A blatant, blatant rip-off of the Da Vinci Code.  Maybe the authors thought if they wrote it in Spanish, no one would notice.  Unfortunately, someone translated it.  (I love Gaudi and was in Barcelona last year, so I'm plunging ahead.)

9 years 34 weeks ago Owen Meany

I loved that book!  I should probably go back and reread it.

9 years 35 weeks ago Thanks!

Thank you, thank you.  I work for kudos, so much appreciated.

9 years 35 weeks ago 10 Demerits

For creating a post in the diary section.

9 years 36 weeks ago Same page

I actually think that's an excellent idea, one I've heard before and support.  Keeps the number going, provides an incentive, etc.  The other ones are 11 for the Wistert brothers and I believe Ron Kramer (87?) and Bennie Oosterban, 47.

9 years 36 weeks ago High standard

Woodson is the only one I would nominate in my Michigan football watching lifetime.  He played on the field three years, which is more than most do.  His resume is amazing.  I'm surprised it hasn't happened, and I brought it up to point out that it's pretty difficult to make the case for anyone reaching that level with the way things are today.

9 years 36 weeks ago Responses

I would say that newspapers do have resources.  We're not talking much here, look at what bloggers can do with virtually no resources.  Maybe it's just redeploying what they've already got.  At the least they'd have access to Elias Sports Bureau or similar databases to conduct reserach on.  The point is they don't emphasize analysis *at all*, and is part of the reason they're losing ground.

I brought this up because any medium which is always behind from a time-standpoint should naturally trend toward analysis.  Yet they don't.  It's really strange.

I don't agree that Henne and Hart should have their numbers retired (although they were great, great players,) and I think in college it should be a very high standard.  Maybe one every twenty years.  I was just pondering what it would take nowadays... and it appears to be a Herculean effort and a degree as someone else mentioned.

9 years 36 weeks ago Creepy

I'm with QB Waggle... funny, but that buried the needle on the Creep-o-Meter.

9 years 37 weeks ago 80%?

Methinks your 80% number is beyond inflated. And I have no issue with selling that as a fan's souvenier, but it will never see the field.

Michigan wears blue jerseys with maize #'s at home, that's the deal.

9 years 37 weeks ago 2003

It was 2003, and I would love to see that game again.  I have this superstition about taping big games, mostly because it ends in fiery doom.  Clearly that hasn't factored in at all from 2004-2007.  Why do the football gods not see my sacrifice?

9 years 37 weeks ago Like the stripe I like the away jerseys with the maize stripe. If there's anything I would tweak, it's the numbers. They need to be bigger & longer.
9 years 37 weeks ago Danielson

Oh, I know exactly why you picked Gary D, his inane promoting of the SEC in 2006.  But that's just one moment of stupidity, whereas the rest of his career was well above average.  Mike Patrick on the other hand hasn't called a sober game in 15 years.  When I'm in the stands listening to the announcers on my very hot-to-the-touch headset, Mike Patrick will absolutely cause the most misery.

If this were about holding a grudge though, it's Gary D.  He blew any Michigan karma he might have had.

9 years 37 weeks ago Hmmm Hey, I think I know you in real life Brah!  Throat cancer... not a smoker, "just lucky I guess."
9 years 38 weeks ago Wow Now there is a blast from the past. Excellent work. Bravo!
9 years 38 weeks ago Thank you, thank you

I knew you were doing it tongue-in-cheek, so that's why I didn't go for the jugular.

And I definitely appreciate the props!  (True story.  The coaches used to tease Shonte mercilessly, and their favorite thing to say was "Why did you put Shonte in there, you know he's a liability!"  At least, I was told this by one of the student managers at the time.  Just because of that, he's one of my favorite Wolverines.)

9 years 38 weeks ago Resolved. Resolved.
9 years 38 weeks ago Brent sux Brent is in, but I actually like Gary Danielson.  Prior to doing the SEC games he was quite solid.  Since Mike Patrick sounds drunk everytime he does a game, and it annoys the absolute crap out of me, he's in.
9 years 38 weeks ago Yep

I've been to both Compton and USC's campus.  I threw that in there because they really do think they're in the hood... they're not.

9 years 38 weeks ago WVU fan Done.  Although I must say, I've been to West Virginia, and I really liked the people.  Of course they looked at my like a giant walking tourist dollar, but they were awfully nice.
9 years 38 weeks ago What I said was...

Your argument isn't sufficient to determine if you are right or wrong.  Simply saying that they recruit the same as rest of the Big East, then claiming they did great in-conference with the same talent level is a straw-man argument.

I made no actual claims myself, except to suggest some ways you could actually check that claim out.  Looks like you did a bit up above, and I gotta say that's not too shabby.

9 years 38 weeks ago You know...

Everytime some yahoo types "first" in a post, Michigan loses one first down, and Shonte Peoples cries a silent tear.

So please, stop for the Peoples.

9 years 38 weeks ago Not exactly, um, "scientific"

Two points that kind of derail things...

1. The amount of success could be proportionately more than other conference juggernauts, based on the same level of talent throughout the various conferences. That would mean they were still getting "more" from "less" on a comparative basis.

2. You would really have to look at how the Big East fared compared to the rest of the BCS conferences, but in particular how WVU fared against non-Big East competition. That's how you would see if they did more with less. In other words, simply look at the games where they clearly had "less", and see how they did. The two I know of for sure are Georgia and Oklahoma, and that's enough for me. Michigan hasn't kicked the snot out of anyone but ND lately, and they're not Oklahoma.

9 years 38 weeks ago Demerit! This isn't really a "diary", it's a comment.
9 years 39 weeks ago Maize Craze

I'm not even a really big fan of the Maize hockey jerseys, but I don't hate them or anything.  A maize football jersey would just not look good.  Cal, Oregon and West Virginia don't look classy in them, they look desperate.  For a program like ours that is as steeped in tradition... no maize jerseys.  Them's the rules.

Seriously, how can you improve on the blue jersey with the maize numbers?  Impossible.

9 years 39 weeks ago Hmmm

Sounds like prevailing opinion is that I didn't do too shabby except for MSU. Obviously I hope I'm wrong, and I'll take the hit and admit I probably set that one too low. However:

1. We've beaten them an inordinate number of times in a row, with a bunch of squeakers in there

2. State thrives on emotion, and the rhetoric has been through the roof this offseason. They're going to have the emotional edge. That's when Sparty is dangerous. Given that, I probably should up the %... say, a toss-up at 50%?

Couple other notes...

Utah - If you believe the line, then plunk your money down. Vegas isn't around to predict games.

Penn State - We're all just slinging opinions here, and my opinion is Penn State is going to stink this season. The past two years against us, they barely scored. Assuming SS is even a tiny upgrade from Ron English, how does PSU even put 20 up on us? With "Spread HD"? Zombie-man is the type of coach RR will eat for breakfast. I feel pretty good about that streak continuing.

Ohio State - These percentages are being assembled in July, yes. So what do we know? We know Michigan is a giant "?" in several areas, not the least of which is scheme. What do we know about the Bucks? We know a tremendous amount (Lloyd word alert!) Anyone who would say standing here *today* that we have anything more than a 10% chance based on rivalry alone is smoking the funny weed. Obviously after getting more information I'd change some things in October.

9 years 40 weeks ago Whitely/Howard Todd would be the 3rd CB in the game.  You might be right about Whitley being better than I recall, but I seem to remember his name being around disaster quite a bit.  I do know that at no time was I ever thinking "Everything's good.  Howard/Whitley is in the game."
9 years 40 weeks ago The Traitor Formerly Known as Boren Obviously Boren, like Gabe Watson, is on the list for different reasons than ability.  I'll have to sit and watch him knowing what is really in his traitorous little heart.
9 years 40 weeks ago Slippery Slope That's a great call.  It's going on the list.
9 years 40 weeks ago The Genie of the Lamp If I ever stumble across a proverbial "Lamp on the beach", one of my wishes will be "Gillette makes it."
9 years 40 weeks ago The weather in hell is unpredictable I was at that game, and was sick before I went.  Agreed.  Another bad one was a Boston College mid-1990's game (not the Chuck Winters Special) where it started off warm and then went into full-blown monsoon icicle mode.  That's probably the coldest I've ever been in my life, wearing a t-shirt and getting drenched in 40 degree weather.
9 years 41 weeks ago Timekeeper Something tells me the game won't be that close, they probably won't need 60:01 to beat this squad.  But I'm sure he'll be on tap, just in case.
9 years 41 weeks ago Without question

I take full responsibility for forgetting Alex Mitchell, which was an unforgivable miss by me.  It has been corrected.  Somewhere right now, Andy Moeller is smiling just a little and isn't sure why.

Also bumped the weather to "UCLA 2000."  I wasn't there, but people who were told me it was like being in the 4th ring of hell.

9 years 41 weeks ago WR's I chose Bellamy for the same reason I did Watson... he was supposed to be a star and disappointed.  He just kinda faded into the background.  But I grant you he did more than Butterfield, who never did more than make sure we accidentally played with 10 (that I recall anyway.)
9 years 41 weeks ago "Special" Teams Yuck.  I'm glad I was 5.
9 years 41 weeks ago Not all bad

Are you thinking of Michael Taylor, who replaced him in 1988?  Demetrius had only 100 net career rushing yards (Taylor had 600+.)  Brown was a career 51% passer, only 57% in 1988.

I'm probably mentally forgetting/discounting his 1988 turnaround.

But even if he was good in 1988, who would you replace him with that played in real contested games?  Even Dreisbach had the Virginia game.  Scott really only lost his spot to injury, IIRC.  When you think about it, we've really had a great run at QB.

But 7 INT's... that's gotta earn Mr. Brown the starting spot.

9 years 41 weeks ago That reminds me Weren't the officials in the 2004 ND game just as egregiously bad?  And I believe both squads were Big Ten officials.  Thanks for nothing you clowns.
9 years 41 weeks ago Tim Brown He only beat us once with any meaningful playing time, the year he won the Heisman (1987.)  I don't recall him being stellar in that game or anything, but I think that's the one in the four game win streak they pretty much kicked us around so he probably did.  But he'd be in the discussion of "excellent receivers who played us, and would torch the defense as assembled."
9 years 41 weeks ago Wow I'm shaking my head.
9 years 41 weeks ago CB's Todd would definitely be 2nd string.  Johnny Sears let Ball State almost precede The Horror by 10 months.  He's actually ahead of Whitley on my list.  I think I have some gray hair now simply because of James Whitley.
9 years 41 weeks ago Officials How could I forget the Sun Belt officials?  They are definitely the Zebras-in-Hell.
9 years 41 weeks ago Good call Amp Lee is absolutely in the discussion.  That game was an unsightly abortion from the Buckley interception onward.  There were many good RB's I can recall on opposing teams, but the feeling of powerlessness for TJ was powerful stuff.
9 years 41 weeks ago USC Represented Both Poole and Udeze were from the 2004 USC team, one of the few games I walked away from thinking "they clearly had more talent than we did."
9 years 42 weeks ago 1997 This begs the question why we don't go back to the sweet M hologram on the shoulders, like in 1997. I'd say those jerseys were kinda good karma. And it actually looked very sweet, in a subtle kind of way.
