Kelly Lytle is a really nice guy. He contacted me through YouTube a couple months after Rob's death. He asked if I would email him any highlights of his dad's playing days (which I always offer to former players and their families). Unfortunately, since only a couple games were televised per-season in the 70's, I had so little footage to send him.
When he died, I wanted to make Lytle some sort of tribute video. All I really had to work with was an interview he did about being a Heisman candidate before the 76 Minnesota game (crappy picture quality and all) plus barely a minute of highlights.
Kelly told me they ended up playing the video at his funeral...

I would have loved to have heard Notre Dame's reasons for hiring Gerry Faust. But I was barely a year old at the time.
Dominant high school coach (who had coached nothing but high school) should make an easy transition to a major college program, right? Ummm...no.

I hope that's Iowa's spring game in that picture. Because if it's actual game day, I'll never complain about the students waiting until halftime to show up at the big house again.

I'll be missing the BYU game this year for a wedding. *SIGH*.

Who knows what the hell Nebraska is thinking, though? They hired a coach who went 93-80 record wise at Oregon State (.538 winning percentage) with the highest bowl appearances to the Sun and Alamo Bowl games.

I would have laughed if ANY coach had done this to him.

After Manningham's catch, it's a good three minutes of the camera panning across the stadium getting close ups of devastated Spartan fans.
Henne and Hart's four year stats against MSU were pure porn
2004: 24/35 for 273 yards, 4 touchdowns
2005: 26/35 for 256 yards, 3 touchdowns
2006: 11/17 for 140 yards, 3 touchdowns
2007: 18/33 for 211 yards, 4 touchdowns
2004: 33 for 225 yards, 1 touchdown
2005: 36 for 222 yards, 1 touchdown
2006: 22 for 125 yards
2007: 15 for 112 yards

Section 37, row 24.
Just like Braylonfest the year before, all the excitement was in the other end zone. I couldn't see the ball as soon as it left Henne's hand. I had to watch the crowd reaction to know what happened. And then I lost it.
As exciting as that play was, it never should have come down to it. The game should have been over after the Leon Hall interception. I practically blew my vocal chords out on that play. But then the flag came out for celebration, and punting the ball when we should have got insurance points, yadda, yadda, yadda. Thank GOD for Manningham, Steve Breaston's kickoff return and Lloyd fighting to get that extra second back on the clock.
PSU's stupid ass fans were livid about that despite the fact JoePa argued and succeeded in getting a few seconds back on the clock earlier in the game.

The main thing I remember about the natural grass was how impossible it was to maintain. Watch the 4th quarter of the 2002 Penn State game and clumps of grass are flying every time a player is tackled.
We also had to say goodbye to the block M on the 50 yard line for 12 years. Just a few games into the 1991 season, the paint had already almost completely faded and they didn't bother retouching it and did away with it the following year. Once the field turf was added in 2003, the block M at midfield made it's triumphant return. Although the students could no longer throw marshmallows.

Beaver Stadium used to be our home away from home. We were 5-1 on that field until RichRod happened...followed by Gibbons missing chip shots that would have won the game two years ago.
How I long to go back to victories there followed by the endless clown show of Penn State fans accusing Lloyd Carr of paying off the officials and the Big Ten refs scheduling secret meetings to intentionally screw PSU over.

|2 weeks 6 days ago||I must be one of those rare||
I must be one of those rare people who have never experienced this at the big house.
About 95% of the games I have been to have been in the north end zone. Every section I was in was seated for the Ho-hum 2 yard runs or non-exciting plays. But if we were in scoring position in our end zone or on D in our end zone, everyone was always on their feet screaming as they should be. No confrontations, no "down in front!" just common sense.
There were obvious exceptions; 2005 Penn State (Manningham!) everyone stayed standing for the end of that 4th quarter. 2012 OT against Northwestern, nobody dared to sit down after Roundtree caught that bomb.
Only once have I ever turned around and signaled people to get on their feet which was 2004 Braylonfest when we were making our comeback...although that was the south end zone. It's kind of a different world on that side of the stadium with no students.

Officials have screwed up obvious calls and non calls for many years. But how they couldn't notice the obvious mugging just several feel away on this play is mind boggling.
UMgoblue.com has a feature about the play. While the ball is in the air, Eddie Brown has grabbed Desmond's waist and then grabbed both his ankles as he falls to the turf. The flag should have been thrown before the ball even reached Desmond.
"I saw six-foot, five (inch) Elvis Grbac back there about to dump it in there for an easy two points and I'm thinking there's no way I can go back to East Lansing if I give up this play," Brown said. "So I tripped him and I tried to act like I tripped and fell."

Bennie Joppru Excellent tight end and very underrated. I don't ever remember him dropping a pass.
I love and agree with the John Kolesar mention. He's also the highest profile former player to ever contact me on my YouTube channel. He offered to buy me a beer next time I was in Ann Arbor.

I'm going to hate myself for reliving this but it was a touchdown lead over Notre Dame that went to hell in the second half, all starting with a muffed punt turnover by James Whitley and then things snowballed. Kraig Baker missed four field goals (2 blocked, 2 wide right) and Jarious Jackson played solid the rest of the day. Against Syracuse, Donovan McNabb simply had the game of his life against our D and went all Vince Young on us.
1999 Tom Brady was a stud. The comeback king.
1998 Tom Brady made me want to pull my hair out several times but he did improve over the course of the season.

It's been over a decade now since they started allowing 6-6 teams to go to bowl games and I still think its a dumb idea. But I'm not losing any sleep over it.
I don't really watch any bowl games anymore until we get to a day or two before New Years...unless a B1G team is playing.

A few side notes involving some of those night games:
*1972 UCLA - The Bruins QB was actor Mark Harmon (and son of our own Tom Harmon) who got knocked on his ass by the Michigan defense on the second series and had to leave the game with a head injury. UCLA had no answer for Schembechler's running game which racked up nearly 400 yards on the ground. Interviewed before the game, Tom Harmon apologized to Michigan fans and said he was rooting for his son. Michigan won 26-9.
*1986 WISCONSIN - The first ever night game at Camp Randall Stadium. Jim Harbaugh became the first ever Michigan QB to throw for 300 yards in a game.
*1982 NOTRE DAME - The first ever night game at Notre Dame Stadium. The results of the game we can forget, which was a 23-17 loss. Bo losing to Gerry Faust is criminal and embarrassing.
*1990 NOTRE DAME - When the jackass ref pulled out an index card to measure whether or not Michigan had a first down. Only in South Bend.
*1998 NORTHWESTERN - The game with the driving rainstorm, the entire field being nothing but mud and Justin Fargas being our running game.
*2003 MINNESOTA - 21 point 4th quarter comeback with Navarre, Braylon and Chris Perry. The 100th anniversary of the little brown jug.
A slight possible correction on 1989 UCLA. An epic win, yes. Vada Murray recovers the onside kick, JD Carlson kicks the game winner with 1 second left. I was only 9 so I don't remember the start time. But there was daylight when the game started. It might have been night time back in Michigan but not on the west coast.
