Sounds kind of like my trip there when I watched them play Western in 1998 (Antwan Randle-El's debut).
Saw Assembly Hall. The fans were very nice. It was easy to get in and out of the stadium parking lot. Really the only annoying thing was listening to their marching band announcer. He is no Carl Grapentine. His blowhard voice is like thousands of nails on a chalkboard. IU brought their band to the big house last year and I was displeased to hear that awful voice again after 14 years.

I think the majority of us who have followed the modern history of this rivalry are well aware that the outcome of this game has had little to do with the success (or lack of success) on the rest of the season. But we still obviously want to win it because...you know, FUCK Notre Dame.
As for your other points, I don't doubt that this rivalry has put together so many fantastic finishes the last 35 years. And yes, we probably SHOULD play every year. But that doen't mean I want us to anymore.
This goes beyond our painful memories with them like the ref in South Bend using an index card to see if Michigan got a first down or Carlyle Holiday leaving the ball behind on the 2 yard line and getting rewarded a touchdown.
It's the endless undeserved hype. The underserved NBC TV contract that continues to get renewed despite the fact that they are 24th in winning percentage since they got it. And then my personal breaking point came when after decades and decades of dodging conference invites, they figured out that they MUST be in one in this day and age but still make their own terms by saying they want to be a part time member. And then the ACC sacrifices their balls and agrees to it. That's not how it should be. You're either a full fledged conference member or you're not. I had always been annoyed at the special treatment ND got but once this "membership" happened with the ACC, I was done. When we stop playing them after this season, I will have a much easier time trying to stop getting mad over all the shit they get away with.

While technically true of those 3 games, only the Penn State game was a disaster for the defense. At least they showed up in the other 2.
The non-existent offense did us in against Iowa. And one of the (many) low points in the season for me was seeing our weak ass offense make Nebraska's 116th ranked defense look like world beaters.
The defense was painfully bad against Akron, Penn State, Indiana, OSU and Kansas State. Many times almost Gerg like with giving up big play after big play through shocking futility. I think we were so busy pulling our hair out over the offensive line that we overlooked how often the defense could not get the job done. We beat OSU and don't even have to settle for the 2 point conversion attempt if they just play a D+ to C- game. And giving up over 500 yards to Indiana is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

I was at the Horror. My seat was in row B (technically the 2nd row) of the north end zone....right where the field goal was blocked on the last play.
I understand all the complaints and arguments for scheduling this opponent again. And I know beating them 100-0 won't change history. But speaking as someone who basically had front row seats to witness this insanely painful moment in sports history, I still want to see us pound those guys into the ground. And if we don't win by AT LEAST 50 points, I think I will lose my mind.

Driving down S. Main, when I see the big house in the distance, I feel excited....kind of like the way it felt at 6 years old whenever your mom would drive you to McDonalds and you would see the golden arches, only better.
Walking inside the stadium, I hear choirs singing in my head.

I remember someone posting the full game a couple years back but it might have been removed.
I have the game in my collection but it's my least favorite win over Notre Dame and not a game I revisit very often. Other than John Carney missing the last second field goal and some nice plays by Jamie Morris, there's not much about that game that's fun to remember. ND was unranked and finished the season unranked. That game should NOT have been close and ND never punted. Lou Holtz had them playing light years ahead of their talent in just his first game and they were sooooo close to knocking us off.
The best highlight reel for that game would cover 6 plays. The rest of that game, not so much.

Three straight meetings Indiana has torched our defense, no matter who their QB is. It's gotten old.

"When he took over the Alabama brand, it's not like he was taking over a losing program."
It amazes me how short people's memories are. Look at the several seasons leading up to Saban's arrival for Alabama. 3-8, 7-5, 4-9, 6-6, 7-5, 6-7 with 2 random 10 win seasons in-between. Not a losing program all time but at THAT time pretty bad. They had some pretty horrid seasons in the 90s as well.
It's kind of like USC before Pete Carrol arrived in 2001 and got them the best players money can buy. 60+ losses over an 8 year span, the college football world jokingly referring to them as SC Community College.
The 25 years before Mack Brown arrived, Texas was about as bad to a mediocre program as one can be.
Oklahoma and LSU in the 90's? Awful.

Please. I've played the "what if game" for every close loss in my lifetime, just like any regular football fan does. That's not restricted to MSU. Up until 2008, I so rarely had to play the what if game in regards to MSU.

The streak against Indiana was the only winning streak that survived the RichRod years. But unfortunately, they know how to score and score often against our defense now.
Here's a fact that will blow your mind about the 87 Indiana game. The Hoosiers were the favorite for that one. They were ranked #15. Michigan was ranked #20. The way that game unfolded was a 10-7 4th quarter lead for us until Indiana blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for the game winning score, 14-10. Indiana was a decent conference team in the late 80's into the early 90's under Bill Mallory.
A happier memory from that 87 Indiana team was their 31-10 win over the Bucks in Columbus...

In 88, Taylor was lost for the year in the epic freezing Minnesota game at the Big House. And Brown took over the rest of the season. But he still came in and played in the blowouts, probably much earlier than you would see in a blowout today. Taylor got injured quite often and Brown needed to always be ready.
But I hear you on the 1988 squad. They were much better than their 9-2-1 record.
*Mike Gillette's game winning field goal against Notre Dame was just wide right in the final seconds. We lose 19-17 and those bastards go on to win the national title.
*The next week, we blow a 30-14 lead on #1 Miami. The Hurricanes pull a Notre Dame and during their comeback, seem to complete miracle play after miracle play combined with a miracle onside kick and we lose 31-30. That Miami team finished 12-1.
Two losses by a combined 3 points to the #1 and #2 teams in the country. And the tie against Iowa? We come back from a 17-3 hole, tie the game. In the 4th quarter, we put in one last drive. On first and goal from the 1 yard line, Tracy Williams fumbles the ball away. So the game ends 17-17.
For such a great team, they had so many instances of horrible luck. And the same villains in college football got to benefit from it once again.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Of all the interceptions||
Of all the interceptions Demetriuos Brown threw in that game, the 7th was the worst. You had Greg McMurtry absolutely wide open in the corner of the end zone and Brown didn't even glance at him, instead throwing the 7th pick.
Take that play back, throw the easy TD to McMurtry and a rebuilding (by Bo's standards) Michigan team beats MSU's best squad in a decade 18-17, despite getting picked off 6 times. Sparty fans would have been suicidal. It would have been epic.

I'll admit it. I was a HUGE Brady Bunch fan. When I was little, I would watch the reruns of the show on TBS. When I was 6, I told my mom I wanted to leave home and move in with the Bradys. She had to break the news to me that the Brady kids were all grown up, so was there really any point?
Years later, when I found out Ann B. Davis went to Michigan, I thought that was so awesome. Hopefully she went to the Big House some time her senior year and saw the Mad Magicians play.

That win meant so much. After this game, the team played 'A' football the rest of the season, (until the Rose Bowl of course when we lost to another pay for play Pete Carroll USC team.)
But after that Minnesota game....
*56-14 over Illinois with the best punt return for a TD by Breaston ever.
*31-3 over a top ten Purdue team that came in with a ton of hype and was playing great football all year.
*27-20 over a MSU team that was coming off 6 straight wins and the media was suddenly in love with John L. (That game wasn't as close as the final score, it would have ended 34-13 had Navarre not fumbled on an unblocked sack that was returned 80 yards for a TD).
*41-10 over Northwestern...returning to Evantson for the first time since the horrible 54-51 game.
*35-21 over OSU.... Should have gone up 35-7 but Braylon's 90 yard TD was called back thanks to holding.
That was some excellent football during those 6 weeks.

The Eric Cartman voice helps add to the comedy of the video. I'd say that kid is fortunate that it's the end of the school year. He'd never hear the end of it at school if the spelling bee was in January.
And after looking it up, apparently a kabaragoya is a large water monitor native to South Asia.

True, Texas has more advantages but before Mack Brown arrived, they went through a 28 year period of mediocrity and just plain crappy seasons. So it's not like they have a long history of taking real advantage of their instate talent.

You need to keep your heartbreak straight. That was the year before. And my main memory of that game, other than Braylon dropping the wide open easy TD bomb, was when a Navarre pass bounced up off of Braylon's heel and right into the hands of a USC player when we were inside our own 20. I don't know what Michigan did to piss off the Rose Bowl GODS but it must have been massive, because that kind of shit has been happening in that stadium since the Nixon adminstration.

|11 weeks 6 days ago||I used to think that way but||
I used to think that way but not anymore.
Going 11-2 in 2011 with a Sugar Bowl victory didnt make a difference in the 2 B1G games I went to as the student section was half empty for the Minnesota game (which was Homecoming) and the Purdue game. Nebraska was ranked that year and I was shocked when I saw how many empty seats there were.
Those problems remained coming off that 11-2 season in 2012. A meh home schedule that year but we still went 6-0 at home with some classic games.
The reality is it doesn't matter how good or bad the product on the field is. The only sold out games are always going to be the rivalry ones or a top ten conference opponent. Students could care less about all the rest. I don't think they see any difference between a 8-4 Purdue team and a 2-10 Akron team. The prices are ridiculous but I don't think it would any different if they were cheaper.
Expanding the student section before the 2011 season seems like the biggest epic fail now.

Watching Gardner get sacked a thousand times last year destroyed my a soul a little bit.
I could say the bright side is it couldn't get any worse. But I ended up saying that about the defense after RichRod's second season. So I'm not going to make that mistake again.
I'm just going to stick to praying for the best but not expecting any miracles. It's easier on the heart.

Winning and developing players is an obvious thing you expect out of every coach, That goes without saying.
Sometimes I wish we could see a little more passion out of Hoke. If we do something stupid, don't just shrug your shoulders, clap your hands and move on. It's OK to get angry sometimes to fire the players up. But Hoke has got to be the calmest coach I've ever seen. Its hard to imagine him getting mad.
