|2 days 13 hours ago||Way too depressing a piece||
Yes, the defense has huge holes, but looking at the entirety of college hockey this year, Michigan is actually a Top 10 team legitimately, bordering on Top 5, as scary as that sounds. Last weekend, 3 of the top 10 teams in the USCHO rankings dropped a game, and #1 Quinnipiac tied and won. MSU always plays us tough, especially at JLA, so I don't see why this is so surprising. I'm encouraged overall that the team beat MSU on the road after dropping a tough one on Friday night. If this was last year, they would have lost on Saturday as well. They didn't, Racine had two good back to back games, and we're still tied with Minnesota with games against them coming up. As long as we sweep up Wisconsin and Ohio St the rest of the year, a couple wins against Minnesota will likely get us the B1G regular season title and a nice position for an at-large if we lose in the tourney.
|1 week 2 days ago||We've now crossed the threshold from CHAOSTEAM to HOCKEYBAYLOR||
There's enough sample size in now to say that we are going to outscore our opponents more than we're going to give up unreasonable amounts of goals. This will not preclude the inevitable heartbreaking loss or two, but I'm now convinced we'll win the league. If we can win the regular season and get to the conference tourney championship, we may stay in line for a 1-seed.... sheesh.
And the CCM Line is legit scary. This line is Zetterberg-Datsyuk-random 3rd guy in their prime scary with how fast they go from forecheck to offense-possession-shot.

Courting of Mel and others won't start until after the tournament run we'll be engaging on, so don't expect any news until April at the earliest.

This team, I mean, this is straight BigXII / 90's era Pac-10 football version of hockey. I'm now convinced we're going to outscore everybody to the conference title, we'll get an at-large since our OOC is helping our PWR, and we'll flame out spectacularly in the 1st or 2nd round. If Racine can keep his GAA under 4, we'll win the conference by a big margin.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||And even better||
Our OOC opponents are holding their end of the deal. BU, Rensselaer, Union, Robert Morris, Dartmouth, Michigan Tech, and Northern Mich are all Top-30 in PWR. Penn St & Minnesota will be the only chances for conference bonus point wins. This bodes well for a potential At-large bid if we stumble in the B1G tourney (provided we win the reg season conference title by a healthy margin)
|5 weeks 2 days ago||So 7 players need to leave / be dropped from recruiting?||
Looking at the list, I guess I can see that...
No schollie (special teamers / walkons): (3) Allen, Sypniewski, David
Not asked back: (4) Strobel, Bars?, Gant?, Richardson?
Possible transfers: (4) Green, Taylor-Douglass, a QB, McCray?
That's 11 right there, not counting any recruits on the board as committs that end up not in the class. You'd like to give Allen a schollie I'd think, but would Harbuagh not renew Bars or Gant with the depth at those positions? It'll be tight, especially if some of those transfers don't come on, so there might be some grayshirting in the recruiting class to make numbers.
|6 weeks 12 hours ago||Huge win this weekend for many reasons||
Michigan picked up at least 1, possibly two OOC bonus wins for PWR in the GLI if Northern can get their shit together and become a team under consideration. In the weaker (than last year) WCHA, that's possible. Not playing State in the championship is probably the best thing that could have happened, PWR wise. Racine looked, dare I say, good?, and Kyle Connor is continuing his Larkin-esque debut. Also this holiday break, Robert Morris won their holiday tournament, so that'll boost their resume and potentially add another OOC scalp for our PWR sheet.
If Michigan can win the B1G regular season, we probably will be an at-large team going into the B1G tourney with a championship game loss to burn.
|6 weeks 1 day ago||On a happy note||
Robert Morris and Mercyhurst are keeping their head above water (RM just won their holiday tournament with a couple of upset wins) and Union is holding strong as a ranked team. Only Dartmouth has really fallen off the map as far OOC opponents go. Beat Michigan Tech in the GLI final (them winning was about as good a result as we could hope for-- another game against Sparty just doesn't help us at this point), and our OOC may actually end up being a plus for us instead of a negative. WCHA is looking weak unlike last year, and Bowling Green just lost a key member of their team to Canadian Juniors right before break.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||From what I can tell from Miami guys on the 'nets||
There was a bit of a fools gold aspect to Blasi. Once he lost the ability to rack up points on lesser regional opponents in the old CCHA, and lost some of his recruiting cache of playing "Michigan, Ohio St, and Michigan St every year" (instead now having to sell Midwest and eastern Canadian recruits on playing NoDak, Denver, Colorado College, etc), recruiting has gone down, his technical acumen behind the bench has been exposed, and he's not gotten any breaks in scheduling in the new NCHC. This is why some of the BC Hockey bloggers are scared that Brad Bates is going to pick the next hockey coach after York retires since they think he'll try to get Blasi (who actually was hired by the guy before Bates). It's confusing, I'll grant you.

|8 weeks 2 days ago||Holy fucksticks can we just put a complete weekend together?||
Minnesota still has a lot of talent and good coaching so you knew they were going to be back and ready on Saturday. The third goal was just sloppy all around. Poor defense play at the line, compounded with a poor recovery effort, compounded again by giving up a soft one from a side angle. Great Jeebus, get your ass on the post and cover the side- you have two defensemen(!) covering the middle...

Kampfer and Hunwick might arguably have had a better career than JMFJ? I really thought Johnson was going to have a monster Al Iafrate / Chris Pronger like career, but he just can't seem to put together 2 good seasons in a row. Kampfer meanwhile is turning in a very solid NHL career and Hunwick is a near all-star quality stay at home defenceman

Brutus Buckeye gets laid regularly... in costume.
In all seriousness though, how does a college player have the funds to pay for such a service?
|9 weeks 8 hours ago||Agree with Save us Mel, it's E) all of the above||
but if you want to point to a specific tactical thing we could do better to try and get some immediate improvement, it's that the defensemen are going in to dig the corners on dump and chases with poor body position and a poor first pass. If the coaching staff can get the defensemen to go harder into the corners and then either just skate around the back of the net to get more room for a better outlet pass, or trade a couple more icing calls per game into stronger clearing attempts, that may help.
|9 weeks 8 hours ago||Well, we're entering Loyola Marymount territory||
Those of a certain age will remember the 90's era Loyola Marymount teams in basketball, where they'd score 120 pts/game in a college game, but also give up 100-110. I think we're at that point with this team this year. It's outscore or bust, and it doesn't seem that Red and staff have the tactics / teaching acumen / motivational skill at this point to correct it. Might be time just to go all out into "score more than the other guys" mode, hope you can rack up enough points in the B1G to win the league handily (which even being a crap league, our OOC performance probably has enough juice to get us an at-large bid with a B1G regular season title) and whatever happens in the B1G tourney, you get in as a 3 or 4 seed and become that "team that no one wants to play" in teh first round, but expect no farther than a 2nd rd appearance. After this season, it's all hands on deck Harbaugh-hiring-style to bring Mel back to Ann Arbor.
|10 weeks 3 days ago||THIS^^||
Hawaii has no money for recruiting and the facilities are less than most big football CONUS state high schools. Add to that a NFL sized stadium that doesn't really have a good game day vibe, a place that's really expensive to live (and visit, and travel to/from home), and that all their games are at least 2 hours behind the closest mainland... yep, Hawaii has issues with fielding a consistent, winning football team.

|11 weeks 2 days ago||So once again||
shitty goaltending and ineffective defensive clears blew a game we should've won. Huh, wonder where I heard that from?
In the happy news, the split with BU probably gives us enough OOC juice to get an at-large provided we win the B1G but don't win the tournament. The WCHA isn't going to have the large number of bubble teams like last year, so that should open up 1 or 2 at -large slots.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||With the way the rest of ooc worked out up to this point||
A split with BU would be very nice, provided we can take care of Dartmouth next weekend. Who's in net tonight?
Edit- just looked, its Racine.
|12 weeks 3 days ago||There are two hopes for this team||
(1) The #1 line with Connor and Nieves turns into a Kevin Porter-2008 scoring juggernaut that can't be stopped and tires out the opposition's defense / backchecking
(2) The energy line with Morody turns into a Grind Line like forechecking terror
If both these happen, we'll win the B1G, perhaps easily. If not, it's struggle-humping defensive breakdowns wait-until-the-B1G-tourney-championship-game misery.
|12 weeks 3 days ago||Anecdotally, I'd say||
RB, DL & QB are most likely to go early. Those are the three positions that usually have multi-year starters by Jr year that are considered positions with shelf lives and are drafted highly by NFL teams traditionally to put more pressure on a player to come out early. The RB decrease the past 5-10 years or so in the NFL I still think is a blimp more than a new trend. .

You have a couple options:
1) If you have, say 20 hours to kill, watch the movies in this order: IV, V, I (optional), II, III, VI. It has been called many things on Internet boards, but I like to call it "The Godfather" mash-up. You get all the back story in a context of emotional up and downs that preserves the twists and reveals of the stories.
2) If you prefer the visual methodolgy, but don't have 20 hours, find "Star Wars Droid Tales" on either the Disney XD app or some streaming service. 6 episodes, 30 min each. The last episode aired this week. It's basically Lego Movie-like animation of the entire Star Wars movie canon (including post-movie release material that is now considered canon like The Clone Wars & Star Wars Rebels) in 30 minute chunks that give you the recaps of the major plots of the movies and characters involved in humerous segments. Good if you're a parent who has to bring up to speed some youngsters on the entire Star Wars universe and don't have the aforementioned 20 hours + to spend in front of the TV, but want them ready to understand the new movie in front of you.
3) If you're a more reading type, and you're already familiar with the general Ep 1-6 movies, read the new books "Aftermath", "Lost Stars", the 4-issue comic book series "Star Wars Shattered Empire", and find a wookiepedia entry on "The Battle of Jakku". That will get you up to speed with who a lot of the new characters are and set the stage for The Force Awakens text crawl on Dec 18. Basically fills in the gap between post-Return of the Jedi and the new movie coming up. Ignore all the "Star Wars Expanded Universe" stuff written from the mid 90's up until now. That, for the most part, has been deemed as non-canon "Legends" material which the new movies will not be subject to. If you hear people complaining in the theater why there's no "Mara Jade" or "Thrawn" in the new movie, it's because those were popular characters from the Expanded Universe novels that Disney has decided to excise from the "New Canon" in order to make new movies and TV shows / books / comics under their purview fit together consistency wise. The people complaining likely spent hundreds of dollars and hours in previous years reading and following all the Expanded Universe storylines, only to have the House of Mouse tell them its means NOTHING. Kind of like Michigan fans who spent hundreds of hours learning intracacies of spread offense philosophies to then learn that Brady Hoke was hired.
Hope this helps. Can't wait for 18 Dec!

I think Claeys is a real candidate for Minny as well. He's basically got a 5 game tryout. If Minny makes a bowl game, I think he gets the job. Minnesota's hoping they have a Pat Fitzgerald and not a Bobby Williams.
|15 weeks 1 day ago||PJ Fleck to Minnesota||
Illinois will inevitably screw up the hire, Minny will jump in, be a consistent 7-9 win team in the B1G West, and he'll eat that trophy scalpin' shit up full bore for Minnesota. The Gophers are probably the most EPL team out there in that they play for trophies more than division titles (The JUG, The PIG, The AXE)- they're basically Everton.
