After this weekend, I am withdrawing most of my questions of Naurato's coaching acumen. The last two games in high pressure situations against high end opponents, missing their #1 defenseman, their defensive structure has been nearly perfect. The retrieval and breakout structure was top notch, easy passes made by players being in the right spots to get the puck out and initiate counterattack. Keeping shots to areas where Barzo can square up and have eyes on target the entire time. That's attributable to coaching strategy and drill.
Honestly, who cares if mhsaa sponsors it. There's a strong girls hs program in the state with both a Div 1 and Div 2 level in spite of mhsaa's idiocy. We also have a strong tier 1 in program with the usual suspects (Little Caesars, Honey baked, Belle Tire, Fox Motors, etc) sponsoring nationally competitive teams. The issue has never been pool of players within the state. It's always been a triple headed monster of cost of Div 1, desire to have Yost as the home rink to maintain parity with the mens team, and balance with Title 9 scholarship limits.
You obviously never played in the Oakland Activities Association against Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, or Lathrup :)
I remember playing in the mid 90s against Seaholm I think, and they had a point guard that wore a yamaka and had white Nike hightops with "Air River Jordan" on them in sharpee marker. Dude was a ball handling wizard but couldn't shoot for his life.
USA Hockey Arena is right there, 15-20 min from campus and 20 min from most of metro Detroit. Forget Toledo, why we couldn't put together a bid for friggin Novi, Michigan I can't for the life of me.
With 5 hockey east teams likely in the tourney, Michigan is one of the teams with the most geographic flexibility. Read the uscho bracketology article weekly and you'll see what I mean. The #2 seed vs #3 Michigan is a game that could be swapped to any region to get the geographic continuity for the #1 seeds that the committee tries to keep intact (aka, they try their damndest to get every Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire team playing to all be at rinks that touch the Boston commuter rail map).

On a related note, because it's hockey... Congrats to the Washtenaw United girls high school hockey team for winning the stae championship last weekend, 5-1 over Cranbrook. Washtenaw Utd is a combined HS varsity team for any girls from a Washtenaw County high school that doesn't have varsity girls hockey (Pioneer has a team and Skyline and Huron combine into Skyron for the girls season). Most of the players are from Saline, Dexter, and Chelsea, but there have been Fr Gabriel Richard, Green hills, Ypsi, Lincoln, and next year Whitmore Lake in the program. Many of the girls on the team have UM alums as parents, and a couple are active faculty members. Their uniforms are Blue, Maize, and Silver-- a tribute to their heritage out of the Ann Arbor Cougars girls club program that wore UM knockoffs for their existence.
Good coaching that enforced a repeatable structure, reasonable recruiting success, and getting an A-/A college hockey goalie.
Flip either MSU's goalie to this year's UM team and we're a solid 2 seed trying for a 1 seed with a BTT victory. I'm still not the biggest Naurato fan because I'm not sold on his ability to put in and enforce structure with a winning defensive system, but if you get a better than B+ goalie on an average Naurato team and we'll outscore most of the opponents.

1) get #3 seed in B1G tourney so we host a first round playoff series.
2) stay above 12 spot in pairwise so we stay out of a 4 seed placement in the NCAA 's.
Encouraging to see a bounce back weekend from our d-corps. 2 solid d pairings + a playable third means our 5 goal a game average will have us picking up at least 4 points every weekend from here on out.
The failure of Truscott, Duke, *and* Warren to not be reliable stay at home defensemen has been THE weakness on this team. You can probably survive with one of those three being subpar, but having all three being risks and your best defensemen being an offensive minded one (granted an All-American level one) is not a formula for success. The team NEEDS one of three of Truscott, Duke, or Warren to be a reliable partner with Casey, and a second to not be a trainwreck in the third period with Edwards and things will be fine*.
*Fine being this is at best a 2nd round team, probably not a Frozen Four contender. Which after the last two seasons, is perfectly fine. Also why it's really important to stay in that Top 12 band so we don't draw one of the Top 4 seeds in Round 1.

Are we getting the college hockey equivalent of Steve Spurrier (a lot of innovative offense, maybe just enough defense to win big), or are we getting Lincoln Riley who seems to not know *how* to coach defense? And yes, I've been worried about this since his hire. There doesn't seem to be a defensive structure that's emphasized or drilled, and that shows when the team has to close out a game in the third.
Hart and Campbell become co-OC's (run gm coordinator, pass gm coordinator), keep position coaching titles on them. Find a TE coach. Playcalling is Campbell's responsibility with inputs from Hart during game.
Bigger loss for assistants to me is Jay Harbaugh from a Special Teams and recruiting perspective.
Assuming Minter goes, we should try and get Wink Martindale to come here with an assoc HC title with the knowledge that he leaves after a year, and then I feel better promoting either Clinkscale or Elston to DC.

Being only two when it happened, I always wondered what it was like when Team USA beat the Soviets in 1980, and THEN had to play the Gold Medal game. Now I know. When it was 20-13 and JJ was staring down a third and long with no one open, that was our "if you lose this game you're taking it to your f*g grave" moment. He got the first down and from then on it was "we are not losing this game".

Q1 and Q4 were the game plan. Misdirection, play action passing, and just a touch of timely QB running to keep the defense honest. Q2 & Q3 were the antithesis of our effective offense this year, trying to much "smart" stuff. The stuff them in a locker approach and then punish the LBs for overplaying is the most Harbaugh way to win a game in the history of Harbaugh games.
I like Penn St v. Ole Miss from a competition standpoint, and I'm assuming that Dart is going to play for Ole Miss.

I was in Dayton during that time period and coworkers of mine from Indy area ended up becoming friends with him- they were native Hoosiers and said he became pretty in with the Indy area HS coaches and ingratiated himself with the community in his sort time there.
