I can't help but think of the Rilo Kiley song used in the football hype videos; "...and sometimes when you're on, you are really fucking on."
And tonight, "We On." Go Blue.
|1 year 21 weeks ago||A few teammates of mine||
A few teammates of mine on Bowling Green State University's rugby team play for Tiger Rugby in the Summer and will probably play with him this summer. It's a highly respected club in the states, and USA 7s player(and BG alum) Rocco Mauer also plays for Tiger. I'm sure his cardio is awful but the coaches will whip him into shape. If he can get his fitness level up to match-standards, I think he could be a force on the pitch. With that being said, I hope he stays out of trouble and uses this as a way to get his life back on track.
|1 year 21 weeks ago||Awesome stat||
I really like seeing a good distribution throughout the ranks on our team. The 20+ points stat is great, but there are contributions up and down the floor from everyone, particularly down the stretch against Kansas when Morgan came in. It's a very deep and complete team, and the way Michigan is playing, I have really high hopes for this weekend.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||It's a bookend||
It's a bookend; they'll start the season with a trophy, and the boys will end their season with a trophy. Go Blue.

Michigan winning 92 - 67

I'm an 08 grad, I'm sure if you know me you can figure it out by my username. When did you graduate? I don't see the police being brought in for something like this at our school though.

Not many coaches leave the pros for a lower level...I can only think of Red off hand as being one of the few exceptions, but I would have to think Babcock would prefer to stay in the NHL. Who knows...that would be incredible...but that is seriously OT.
Bring Danny to the Wings, he's a solid d-man with a ton of size and a good shot.
|2 years 26 weeks ago||Pop Evil||
As long as I never hear "In The Big House" by Pop Evil again, I'll feel a little better about the RAWK music. That song is embarrassing. I don't mind some of the piped-in music, but they need to do a better job of selecting songs appropriate for each scenario. I'm pretty sure they played "Build Me Up Buttercup" at the end of the Ohio State game which totally deflated the crowd in my opinion. Awful song choice. I will always prefer the marching band to anything else, but "the times, they are a'changin'.''
|2 years 27 weeks ago||Look for me||
Look for me in my Blue jersey with number 90 on it. The baby is a relic. It would be cool to meet fellow MGoBoard members, yeah?
|2 years 27 weeks ago||Probably because it IS...||
Probably because it IS the same team as last year, plus Burke. So, in spite of the obvious, another year of development and chemistry building definitely has done wonders for these boys.
Side note: Also, I love your avatar. mwY for life.
|2 years 27 weeks ago||It all depends||
I usually show up around midnight, so about 8 hours before the doors open. You could theoretically show up when the gates open though, because people don't go straight for the jerseys. They usually go for the equipment, and jerseys are taken sporatically throughout the sale. To be safe, I would recommend coming at 5:30 or 6 to get a decent spot in line and improve your chances of getting things you want. Last year there were a couple of jerseys left on the rack well into the sale.
|2 years 27 weeks ago||Myle's||
Hands down, Myle's Pizza. The cheese and toppings are laid on thick, so you are getting a lot for your money. Not quite as good as my childhood favorite Thano's Lamplighter in Ann Arbor, but I enjoy Myle's a lot. Campus Polleye's is more known for their stuffed breadsticks which are delicious, but Myle's is a better restaurant if you want to sit down, enjoy a beer, and have a thick cut of pie.
|2 years 27 weeks ago||I agree completely||
I don't think it justifies the actions of the player in any situation. I do not think that letting your emotions get the better of you makes you a terrible person, however, as many of the readers seem to think in regards to Bertuzzi.
|2 years 27 weeks ago||Yes||
They sell pants and shells for very cheap. I think I bought my pants for about $20.
They also have good deals on sticks. Brand new one-pieces are pretty cheap. The thing about the sale though is that you have to know what you want when you go in. If you need skates, go immediately to the skates. I bought a brand new pair of X:60's for $175 when they're normally triple that at least, and I also own a pair of Hagelin's Reebok's. If you have someone with you, I would recommend sending them to get the sticks, and you grab whatever it is that you need...however, a lot of people are absolute dicks and grab up dozens and dozens of sticks just to sell them on eBay. If more people would just take what they need, it wouldn't be too bad.
So--grab your sticks quick if that is what you are looking for.
|2 years 27 weeks ago||Another BGSU student||
I know BGSU isn't much to look at, but we do have some really nice new buildings, including the Stroh Center, which is our gorgeous basketball/all-purpose arena.
FOOD: Other than that, avoid campus. Myle's Pizza and Campus Pollyeye's are the places to go if you want pizza. B-Dubbs is moving to another location, so it is closed for the moment, but Jed's is always good, and City Tap has pretty good food during the day. Corner Grill is on the corner of N. Main St and is a pretty delicious dive, with relatively cheap food. Their hours are great if you want to eat after the bars close.
BARS: Most of the good bars are 21 and up with no cover charge. Reverend's(on Wooster and Main) and Brathaus(on Court, I believe) are pretty good places to start. Rev's has a lot of good beer choices, and Brathaus has the "liquid joint" which is a pretty delicious beverage that will get you drunk quickly. Everywhere else is alright depending on the night, but considering it is the weekend and it is a college town, I would steer clear of the bars on Wooster which will be full of kids running around being assholes.
Definitely pumped for the games this weekend. I should be at both games wearing Michigan stuff. I doubt it will sellout, but hopefully it is a pretty large and fun crowd. If anyone wants to try and meet up before, after, or during, let me know. I'll probably be there alone since all of my friends will be cheering for BGSU, unless I can convince my rugby teammate and Teddy Ruth's younger brother(of Notre Dame hockey fame) to tag along.
Extra: When BG hosted Notre Dame early in the season I saw Kris Draper sitting in the stands near the "press box" with a scouting clipboard. Since it is a smaller barn, there is a lot of transparency and these guys are out in the open. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for guys like him if you want an autograph or something. He was very friendly. It might be a longshot that any former players-turned-scouts are in attendance, but rumor has it that the Wings would potentially take PDG in the draft, so you never know.

IMHO, Bertuzzi is not a bad person, nor is he a criminal. I spent 17 years playing hockey, and the last four seasons of my career were in junior leagues throughout the US and Canada(I rode the bench, I'm not trying to brag here). I DO NOT condone what Bert did by any means. It was ruthless and definitely warranted punishment...however, when you let anger get the best of you on the ice, you will likely do something stupid that you would not do if you were level-headed. In one of my games, the opposing team's star-player (Mike Santee) grabbed my stick and wouldn't let go. I asked him to fight while he was holding my stick parallel with his chest, and he would not drop his gloves or let go of my stick, so I cross-checked him in the neck, knocking him out of the game, and got jumped by their goalie and started a line brawl. It was a dirty, dirty play. Maybe nowhere near Bert's dumb move, but when you're angry, you stop using rationale and that is when stuff like this happens.
|2 years 32 weeks ago||FTW||
I would say that almost the entire lower bowl was filled. I was sitting very close to the ice, but I was surrounded by Buckeyes. As the game wore on, I started to get pelted heavily with snowballs. Maybe I am a bit of a masochist, but after winning, those snowballs felt great on my head. Not a bad crowd though, and it was awesome having the pep band there. Didn't expect so many Michigan fans. It's a shame how uninformed Columbus Community College hockey fans are. Go Blue!

Some GA students made this awful rap song for the SEC Title Game. Definitely worth a watch. The first kid looks like Darren Helm.

I would have loved to see him stick around long enough for us to whoop them(however far down the road that may be) but none the less, pretty wild way to wake up on my first morning back in America.
|3 years 18 weeks ago||Not OT, Amazing News||
SO great to hear about this. I was at that game and only 12 years old. What a fantastic finish, and way to deal with adversity by Brabbs. I think I remember him running the ball once or twice too. On fakes obviously. Correct me if I'm wrong. If not that game, maybe one of the others that season.
|3 years 20 weeks ago||Unfortunately||
That isn't how it works. He's small and tiny, and he's 24. Guys rarely get drafter later than 19/20 years old. He'll finish his career and hopefully get a shot in the ECHL, maybe the AHL if he is lucky, and doesn't decide to go into the business/real world after. He's a hell of a goalie with a lot of heart. Never say never.
|3 years 20 weeks ago||Thanks for this||
I've been going to games on and off my whole life, but these are the things that make Michigan Hockey a unique and wonderful experience. I was only eight when they won in '98, so tonight is huge for me(as it is for all of us). I just hope we win, so I can savor it for as long as I live. What a team, eh? Go Blue!
|3 years 20 weeks ago||This guy^||
Not only did they recruit the entire D-5 team, but Gunner Stahl is their captain. He'll triple deke for sure, he's fancy.
|3 years 22 weeks ago||God is a Michigan fan||
God is a Michigan fan...seeing as how he went there. His real name is Jack Johnson, and he willed the puck to change direction.
Really though, I have no idea how that happened. Amazing.
|3 years 22 weeks ago||Wonderful article||
Growing up I played at a pretty high level against several current and former Wolverines(Wohlberg, Palushaj, Czarnik, Vaughan, etc), I always knew that college hockey was my ultimate goal. Sadly, my dream didn't come true, but I have always admired the players that chose to get their education while playing college hockey instead of heading North to play in the CHL.
It is programs like St. Mike's that keep the integrity of the players and the sport alive. Awesome article, thanks for posting.
|3 years 23 weeks ago||He coached||
He coached Honeybaked his daughters' Honeybaked AAA team. I think it was U12 or U14 age group. So...that just tells me nothing. Granted, they did win the state title and went to nationals(don't remember how they did, my friend was his assistant coach).
|3 years 23 weeks ago||Great hire!||
Anastos recently coached his daughters'(I believe he has two) Honeybaked U-12 team to a state title! If that doesn't tell you how good of a coach he really is, then something is surely the matter with you...
|3 years 23 weeks ago||Being at the game||
Being at the game was so rough. First of all, Michigan did not play with any desperation what so ever. Not having Wohlberg hurt a lot because Michigan did not play with the physicality that he normally has. Defense was lathargic. Second, the Western fans were just fucking obnoxious. My ears and my soul got jail-sexed harder than Mr. Hands got pumped by that horse...that eventually killed him.
