Have you heard of (or watched) The People vs. O.J. Simpson? That's actually the first season in a series called American Crime Story, and the second season will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It could go a long way in bringing that particular world to light for many Americans, like myself, who still don't know that much about what happened there.

I don't even mind watching or listening to coverage from the "bad guys'" side - I remember listening to a Notre Dame radio station during a UM-ND game, and it was somehow less annoying to hear them cheering on their team when it was what you expected them to do. Like, it just felt honest. Plus, we won, so I got to enjoy their existential horror.

I used to dislike Collinsworth because I thought he came off like a jerk and was sort of negative all the time. But honestly he just diagnoses plays so fast and tells you exactly who screwed up and how that allowed the play to be successful. Now I don't mind his general tone because I appreciate his substance way more.

I'm curious to see how this game breaks down. Seems like a bizarro opposite-world scenario for our team, and ... and I don't know what it means. But we won! 8-2 is all right, would love to tack on a few more wins.

Bless you, Buckeyes. And bless you, Chad Carr. It's wrong that you have to go so soon, but you've made a big difference in your short time on Earth, and that's incredible. You champion.

Peppers can run better than running backs, catch better than receivers, throw better than quarterbacks, and spot the ball better than referees.
|25 weeks 1 day ago||I'll bet I could lose the||
I'll bet I could lose the game for UM if I was quarterbacking. I would find a way. I'd say there would be a 1 in 3 chance every play that I turn the ball over if I'm asked to throw, and only a 1 in 10 chance of an actual completion - deep balls and anything remotely challenging are not on the menu for me. I'm sure Harbaugh would game plan for this and make me hand it off every play, but I would still deliver a sub-optimal handoff probably 3 out of 4 times because I don't know where the RB is going and I'm not used to how quickly the play develops. I'd estimate a 1 in 5 chance of me fumbling the handoff every play. So our offense has become slightly less than 1-dimensional, and our 1 dimension is handicapped significantly. Our blocking and running is decent, but is it enough? If it didn't violate the rules of this thought exercise, I'm sure Harbaugh would have me motion to the receiver position every play and let Peppers take snaps.

Generally I just trust Harbaugh more than me, but I would be ok playing Speight if Rudock had any nagging injury stuff and we were in control of the game.

In my mind, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan are the true "Great Lakes States" and they have all the nice land and water. You can't beat those ones for sheer prettyness. The more southern states in the Midwest are more boring landscape-wise, but they do have more notable big cities.

|26 weeks 5 days ago||I agree that you have to||
I agree that you have to allow people to do things they enjoy even if there's some danger involved. I think one fair point is that we should try to make the sport as safe as we can without compromising the nature of the game, but there will be disagreement about how far is too far. Is it good to have concussion protocols? My opinion is yes. Do I think the targeting rule is working? My opinion is no, that seems to be compromising football a bit.
|26 weeks 5 days ago||"Wisco decrribes each as||
"Wisco decrribes each as equally valid comparisons, to which I wholeheartedly disagree."
They are equally valid for the questions they address. I think you're conflating "validity" with "importance.". Do I think one question is more pertinent than the other? I don't know so I won't take a stance on it. The logic of both comparisons is sound, though others have pointed out that we could optimize the stats for accuracy.
|26 weeks 5 days ago||I agree with you 100%, you||
I agree with you 100%, you are flat-out correct on everything you said. I'll add two things that go beyond what we've already talked about when considering how dangerous football is.
One difference between football and driving is that driving (for now) is basically essential - for many people, you just have to drive. Football will always be optional, so the cost-benefit consideration will be different. I don't know what the tipping point would be, at which death rate you'd go "ok this just isn't worth it anymore." I think we're still way below that, but it's subjective.
The second thing is that death rates don't tell the whole story of how dangerous an activity is. We still don't understand the long-term effects of football on the human brain, but I'm certain that more relevant statistics will be those that track outcomes over time.
|26 weeks 5 days ago||Which statistics you want to||
Which statistics you want to compare depends entirely on what question you want to answer. If the question is "is football more dangerous than other sports", then you want to compare the fatality rate of football to that of other sports. If the question is "how dangerous is football in the grand scheme of things", then you compare it to everyday things. Both are equally valid.
Your example of comparing highways to military service, however, is objectively flawed because you chose to compare absolute numbers, rather than fatalities per capita.

I hope that Blake gets a run in the NFL, it would be cool to see him make it at the next level. I think a lot of us are thinking maybe he could, wondering if he will.
|27 weeks 5 days ago||I have no problem. They can||
I have no problem. They can say whatever they want. It's up to me whether I take it seriously or not, and I obviously do not. Jim Harbaugh has done everything MSU fans were afraid he might do and then some - he elminated the gap between UM & MSU in less than a year. They know they were lucky to escape with a miraculous win, let them spit as much venom as they like. I don't care what they say, I'm still pretty happy with where this is going.
|27 weeks 5 days ago||I think it's a perfectly fine||
I think it's a perfectly fine question to ask, but I think that we probably won't be able to know the context. Maye there's some kind of understood etiquette that Brian ignored. Maybe the Lost Lettermen completely overreacted to something insignificant. I don't know how these things work, I don't know the journalism world, I don't know the personal relationships, and I don't think I care enough to find out. Consequently, I don't judge either way.
|27 weeks 5 days ago||In AFL, if you do not get rid||
In AFL, if you do not get rid of the ball in a timely manner upon being taken to the ground, a free kick is awarded to the other team (so it's a change of possession). I doubt that had much of an impact on Blake's panicked actions, because lots of American punters have tried the same thing when attempting to salvage a broken punt, but I suppose it's possible.
