My wife got me a starter brewing kit a few year ago for my birthday, and the stuff that came with it was ok. It didn't help that the types that came with the kit weren't what I would have picked on my own. Plus it was from extract instead of from scratch, which felt like cheating but I don't even know where to begin starting from scratch. In the end, it just seemed easier to try lots of different stuff from the store rather than try to make my own stuff that might not even be very good.
So what say you, people who actually brew from scratch. How hard is it to actually brew beer starting from scratch rather than from extract? And how hard is it to make beer that won't make me regret not buying good stuff from the store?

Ohio St. just throws everything off in that chart because they are currently way ahead of everyone nationally. But if you look at the national ranks, Michigan is closer to #3 LSU than #11 Iowa. Also, Michigan is likely to land quite a few high ranking recruits between now and signing day, while Iowa and the rest of Tier 2 are unlikely to land many. So even though that chart makes it look like Michigan is close to the rest of Tier 2 at this time, the tea leaves are pointing to the final results looking like last year with OSU and Michigan well ahead of the pack in the B1G.

The circumstances around it are weird, but I like the move because at least one of the second-tier B1G programs is finally taking that BTN money and trying. This is 100x better than taking yet another MAC coach with a couple decent seasons and trying to tell everyone this guy is the one that will be the next Urban Meyer. This is something a lower-tier SEC program would do to try to make a splash and move up in the world.
Which means it probably won't work out, because apparently no coach ever works out at Illinois. But if every B1G team went after big names like this, most of them would work out and the whole conference would be better off.

Yeah, I was going to chime in on this too. The only way Penn St. was scoring was if they got a short field, and Iowa was backed up to their own goal line and punting out of the end zone. The odds of getting off a good punt are low, and the chances of something disastrous happening are high. Iowa had shut down the Penn St. offense all day, the chances of them getting a field goal without good field position were so much lower than something going horribly wrong with the pressure punt. It made sense at the time, and hindsight only confirmed it.

I'm just a guy who was watching on TV - my wife is relevant only because I wouldn't be watching MSU roll over some MAC team unless she wanted to watch. I don't know that was the sole reason with 100% certainty, but it's the only reason that makes sense. Terry was the 3rd string quarterback, but they ran him in for one random play in the middle of a drive and then immediately put Cook back in. It wasn't truly garbage time yet, and they hadn't played their 2nd string (O'Connor) yet. And if they wanted him to get some snaps with the 1st teamers they would have let him have more than one snap. Only reason that makes sense is getting him experience coming in for a lost helmet situation before he needs to do it on a play that really matters.

It's still incompetent. My wife is an MSU grad, so I got to watch MSU run concussion drills with Damion Terry *during games* last year. While they were in the middle of blowing out MAC teams (which they could do because they had a passable offense) they would randomly rush Terry in for one play for no reason other than to simulate what would happen if Cook lost his helmet during an actual game. The worst part may have been that they were so confident in winning that they were doing this in the first half of games.
So Dantonio and company were so well prepared they had a plan for this very possible scenario and were drilling it during live games. But when it happens to us, our coach doesn't know the rules and our back up can't find his helmet. Incompetent.

I don't think cable demise is imminent, but it's happening eventually. I think the demise will go down at about the rate newspapers have disappeared - they've been dying for 20 years now, but most of them are still around, if very cut back. So cable isn't going away any time soon, but I bet 20 years from now the thought of expanding the conference solely for cable fees will look about as stupid as if the conference had expanded based solely on newspaper distribution 20 years ago.
The sports channel race was always a house of cards based on getting fees from people who don't watch that particular sport. It's a bubble driving demand for entertainment without paying for 20 sports channels you don't care about, and eventually someone is going to reliably fill it.

I didn't think any of the errors made a difference in the overall theme of the book or any of the conclusions reached, but some people looking to refute someone writing negatively about Michigan latched on to them as reasons to discredit the whole book. The difference between benign factual errors and making up and embellishing stories depends on your point of view after all.

I don't care what the official color is, stephenrjking made a post yesterday full of historical photos and the football team hasn't been wearing the official color for as long as color photography has existed. The only pants in those photos that are close to the official color are on other teams. So I think all the people lobbying for the official color seem to be traditionalists longing for a past that never existed.
This was the photo he posted at the end, and I agree. This is how the football team should look, whatever the "official" colors are. And the official colors are nowehere near this or any other color we've ever worn.
I tried picking as close to this as I could without going too highlighter, and picked FECF200*. Maybe one of the lighter ones would match replicate the picture better, but it wouldn't be an orangey one.

And we had the Arkansas series scheduled in the break in the ND series, and have been scheduling home-and-homes with teams like that in the future in place of the canceled ND series. The problem is that these home-and-homes are being scheduled many years in advance, and the way the ND series was suddenly canceled made it hard to find games for the next few years. So it sucks for the next few years, but the blame lays mostly outside our athletic department, and change is coming in the future.

But the sort of thinking that has multiple posters here fretting about leaving money on the table *has* affected fan attendance in other ways. So while this one deal won't make much of a change in attendance, it's a hopeful signal that maybe the new leadership in the athletic department will consider something other than next quarter's revenue when making decisions, whether it affects the players or the fans.
|1 year 11 weeks ago||This is true to a certain||
This is true to a certain degree, but once you're revenues are high enough it doesn't hurt to leave a little bit of money on the table to make players and/or fans happy. In fact it may pay off even more in the long run through better recruits who win more games or happier fans who won't stop buying tickets if the team has a down period. I think the Brandon era would show the perils of making every decision based on next quarter's spreadsheets.

I think it's stupid for the same reasons Brandon's focus on expanding the brand was stupid. The marginal gain from cornering the market on college football fans in Mexico City is going to be more than offset by upsetting long time season ticket holders who don't get marquee out-of-conference games with their season tickets. This is an example of taking the main revenue sources for granted while chasing people who are never going to buy Texas tickets, and that was what started the ball rolling on getting Brandon driven out of town. Any expanding the brand that occurs won't matter if your main fan base doesn't want to buy tickets any more.

As a result, you can count on them having something about your team, but it won't be nearly as good as the stuff from sites that actually focus on your team.
Way back in the day Brian reserved the Fiutakin' it tag for clueless columnists who didn't let their cluelessness get in the way of hot takes, but even that got old five years ago. And CFN is somehow still going...

Because not everyone got the offer Michigan got. Adidas gave Michigan an offer that was way beyond what anyone else was getting with Nike (or anyone else), plus they guranteed Michigan would be the highest paid team for the length of the contract. Obviously they can't gurantee every team be the highest paid, but Michigan was a big enough name to make it worth the big price to make a splash and get the Adidas brand out there.

This differs with the way I remember it - I thought the parents moved in the 03-04 season. I had student tickets in section 17 for 02-03 (right on the aisle next to section 18) and remember a big fist fight between (IIRC) Ferris St. parents and some students in the top half of section 18. The next season (03-04) the opponent parents were on the other side of the arena, and I was in section 18 behind some random non-student Michigan fans between the students and the opponents' bench.
I might be off on some of the details there, but 03-04 was my last year with season tickets and I remember at least one season of the parents being moved.

I don't think there's much disecting to do for the Brady Hoke tenure - he was a poor head coach who lost way to many games. I think this post is more for the Dakich's of the world who were contending that there were no complaints with the athletic department or Dave Brandon if the football team was winning more games.

The target demographic was stated many times: the family of four from Grand Rapids that only goes to one game per year. These families are frequently going to minor league baseball games, so they thought if they made Michigan games more like minor league baseball games they would draw all the casual fans from around the state.
Of course they forgot the main reason these families go to minor league baseball games is because they are relatively cheap while Brandon was charging through the roof for Michigan tickets. Or that minor league baseball games don't feature hours of traffic backups, $50 parking fees, and get you a full seat more than a foot wide. Going to Michigan games means putting up with a lot of annoying stuff but doing it anyway because you're a die hard, but Brandon decided to change what the die hards liked to try and draw people that were never going to come anyway.

You're probably not in the target market for this. Most people this will appeal to are already paying close to $100 for cable alone (and even more if they are getting premium channels). And probably more than $35 for high speed internet. And already have some streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc on top of it. So if these people can get most of what they use cable TV for with the Sling service, it's an easy way to save a lot of money. If you can get all the cable TV and high speed internet you need for $100, it's clear this isn't the most appealing deal, but you're in a shrinking minority. Cable bills are only going up.

Who is your ISP? ESPN3 isn't free, it's "free" if your ISP pays a per-subscriber fee to ESPN (and then of course those fees get passed on to the subscribers). Those ISPs then get directly into ESPN3. What about a power-based scheme makes you think the offense would have been any better? As I said up thread, we hadn't been running one the previous couple years under Carr - those last couple offenses were all zone-based schemes, and Carr had been recruiting Molk-type linemen more suited for zone blocking than man blocking. The line woul dhave been even more inexperienced in a power-based scheme than a zone-based scheme. Why do you think this would have improved anything?
|1 year 46 weeks ago||What offense did you think he||
What offense did you think he should run?
People with this complaint act like Michigan had been running a man-blocking scheme under center forever, when in fact Michgan had switched to a zone-based run scheme for the last two years under Carr. In 2007, damn near every game started with a zone stretch behind Jake Long because that was the base play of the offense. Switching to a man scheme and running isos would have been an even further departure from what we had been running under Carr. In fact, as far as the O-line was concerned, it was pretty much the exact same thing. Only real difference in the run game was that the quarterback was always in the shotgun and occasionally kep the ball to keep to keep the defense honest.
As far as the quarterbacks go, you act like no QB available could do what RR asked of him, but do you really think they would have been ok sitting in the pocket, surverying the field, reading coverages, and making accurate throws? Threet couldn't do this at ASU after he had a few more years experience. An old school pro-style offense relies even more on the QB than the spread, and the options available for that didn't look promising.
The problem for the offense that year was that the line was incredibly inexperienced and couldn't block anyone, and the quarterbacks were young and sub-par and couldn't overcome the line. They weren't going anywhere that year, especially if they switched to some half-ass pro-style that they hadn't even been running the previous couple years. The 'refused to adjust his offense" meme needs to die.

|1 year 48 weeks ago||I think these tweets have||
I think these tweets have quite a bit of hindsight revisionism. Newspapers need to assign a narrative to the game, and MSU is obsessed with Michigan, so when MSU wins it was because of the obsession.
The real reason MSU has dominated this rivalry recently is because they've had better teams. MSU lived for this game before Dantonio was their coach, but they ususally lost anyway because Michigan was the better team. However, since Lloyd retired, MSU has usually had the better team over the whole season. And (suprise!) they usually ended up winning this game too. I think very little of the outcome Saturday will have to do with intensity of mid-week presser quotes and a lot more to do with which team has better coaching.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||You got tickets after it||
You got tickets after it changed to a donation based system. Prior to that, it was a list that you actual had to wait on until your turn until your turn came up after enough people died/stopped renewing their tickets. It was supposedly like 20 years long in the early '00s, and I remember signing up after graduating even though I was moving to the other side of the country just in case I was back in the area when my name finally came up - if I waited until I actually moved back to sign up, I might never get tickets.
But then Martin switched to the priority points based system, and he and especially Brandon jacked up prices and PSLs until they burned though any waiting list people who might pay more than exisiting customers, and now there is no wait as long as you have enough priority points. It was great for next quarter's revenue while things were going well, but it killed fan loyalty for times times like right now. Why renew tickets during bad seasons when you can just save your money and buy your way back on when things are going well? It's not like the athletic department will care about your loyalty if they think someone else might pay more once things are going well again.

While it's totally understandable that the offensive line wouldn't be good, it still shouldn't be this bad. And it was bad last year too, even when we had two tackles that went on to get drafted by the third round. It wasn't particularly good the year before either. And it's not like the offensive line is the only problem - none of the skill position players are distinguishing themselves (and Devin Gardner seems to be getting worse), and the defense seems to be getting worse every year.
Expectations for the O-line should be lowered because of the issues you mentioned. But all the vitriol on the blog is due to the many, many issues the team has beyond the O-line. If the only issue was the offensive line being subpar, people on this blog would be a lot happier.

But alas, he wasn't a Michigan Man, and the AD assumed we didn't need to pay much for coordinators because it was an honor to coach at Michigan. And as to Hoke, the entire reason behind hiring a coach with a 47-50 career record was institutional vanity - no other blue blood program have even considered him. But he was the best Michigan Man available, and apparently that was all that mattered to us.

Me too. History is filled with teams that were great despite relatively low talent, and rarely were they great for long. Putting together elite teams without elite talent is *hard*, and especially hard when you lose a bunch of multiyear starters from your team strength.
I don't think they'll be bad though, just merely very good instead of elite like last year. I think the closest analog is probably Wisconsin, who also consistently puts together good teams despite mediocre recruiting thanks to program stability and coaching. But Wisconsin rarely finishes in the top 5 (only once in the last decade, 2006, and only in one poll), and only slightly more often in the top 10. They're usually in the top 25 though, which is good for that level of recruiting. The top 10 years are the exception, not the norm, and I expect things to be similar for MSU.

Only potential issue is future support - Motorola has only guranteed 18 months of updates, and they phone is already a year old. But it's available for cheap right now with the X+1 coming out soon.

Either Michigan is a lot better than 2011, or the Italian teams are a lot worse, but the previews I read predicted these types of scores. UMHoops specifically mentioned that Notre Dame was beating the same teams by similar scores a week earlier. The next game is the only one that was expected to be a challenge.

I wonder what MSU's redshirt percentage was back in Dantonio's first few years. It's one thing to redshirt most of your freshmen when almost your entire two-deep is filled with known-quantity upperclassmen you personally recruited and spent a few years developing. It's another when you're hoping the new guys might be better than the leftovers of the previous coach's classes. I doubt Dantonio started off redshirting 12% of the freshman right off the bat, but I have been wrong before.

I was about to post the same thing, but you got to it before I found the link. Here is the Brian's original post about SHORYUKEN pass defense for more detail.

Hasn't Brian been promising an upgrade to a newer version of Drupal for like forever? One that has a mobile website module with it? Seems like it's getting kinda late in the offseason for an upgrade like that.

Brian said there ran 90% inside zone drills during warm-ups, but he says nothing about during the actual scrimmage. But Space Coyote did a write up on the scrimmage, and here is what he had to say:
Emphasis mine, but it does seem a little bit like the spent more time working on the thing that needs the most work.

Nothing will ever purge the sting of that defeat. Ever. App St. wants to play us because because they are moving up the FBS this year, and there is no better way to make the jump than to remind everyone of that one time they were nationally relevant. Whether or not they beat us doesn't really matter as long as they are back in the spotlight again. No other opponent would put them back in the media spotlight nearly as much as a rematch of The Horror.

OSU and MSU are conference rivals with respectable teams. We're going to have to play them every year, and beating them will actually prove something. The App St. game was completely avoidable and here is no margin of victory that will stop people from talking about that one time we lost to them.

It has nothing to do with the opinion of the media. It has everything to do with not being able to enjoy the usual previews in anticipation of the season without everyone having a convenient excuse to dredge up memories of the worst single week in Michigan football history.

Memories of the absolute horse shit preparation and performance by Lloyd Carr and his staff would slowly fade into the background unless there was a reason for all of the media outlets to reminisce about it at the same time. And DB provided the reason.

I'd be very surprised if this is the only oral history of The Horror. And I'm sure ESPN.com and SI and a half dozen other CFB sites will have retrospectives too. And I can't wait for College GameDay to have a segment about it. Anybody got an over/under on the number of times the FG block will be replayed during the game broadcast? What a way to get Michgan fans pumped up for the start of college football season.
But at least we'll have a Wow Experience. Thanks DB!

No, I'm out of state and I'm not going to be able to make it to any games this year, and no one I know is interested in the non-Penn St. games.
