Amen to that. And fell on a big fumble in the Rose Bowl. What a find

Don’t sleep on Fresno St.

Don’t sleep on Fresno St.

Bulldogs have a veteran starting QB in Mikey Keene, looking to prove he’s an NFL guy. They’re experienced and at the apex of their competitive window. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve irrationally been scared by a week one pay-game, but they should have enough to make a game out of the opener.

Did anyone else anecdotally…

Did anyone else anecdotally get that feeling he looked tired and low-energy for his ESPN on-field interviews?

I’ve read this three times and listened to A Better Son/Daughter this morning. May we all remember this feeling. Thank you, Brian.

After a two-week work trip in Sweden, I’ll be home for 36 hours before flying back out to Houston Monday morning. MGoWife (a Badger) is doing me a real solid.

Hey! Flying back from WJC…

Hey! Flying back from WJC right now. I’ve been the NHL Network sideline reporter for the past 3 WJCs and was a WOLV TV broadcaster from 1999-03. Such scenes last night! Special to be there with our USA boys and especially the great UM kids I’ve gotten to know over the past few tournaments. Gavin Brindley has really picked up a ton of hype - his motor is outstanding and allows him to play inches taller than he actually is. His parents are great people and met at Miami University. Like Rutger, and a bunch of the players on the team, his dad is Canadian but a full-throated USA partisan.

It won’t last into the B1G season, but Rutger and MSU’s Isaac Howard were good buds on the team. They had a special high-five when lining up in the tunnel before every period where they both yell TWOOOOO! (Ike wears 22 for Sparty and USA.) Incredible to see how much USA’s development program has flourished.

Craig Button of TSN - an excellent human, and fanatical M fan whose daughter was born at the UM hospital - and I stayed up to watch the Rose Bowl from our hotel’s hospitality suite. Milton was stopped at ~2:35 am in Gothenburg.

I’ve got a bunch of pics on my instagram and instastories. Great shot of Seamus wrapped in an American flag and Frank high-fiving some Swedish kids. Go Blue! #BlueAbroad

I think this suggests the transfer portal or Tuttle staying and getting the first crack and running with it. Was an awfully big recruit, and if he's motivated to stay for that sixth year, he might be better than many portal options.

Fresno State will return a really good offense. Mikey Keene is a future NFL draft pick and as a reshirt sophomore led the MWC in completion percentage and averaged 278 passing yards per game. Decent chance the Bulldogs enter the season ranked.

Flying in from LA. Quick 24…

Flying in from LA, meeting a friend flying in from Denver. Quick 24 hour trip. Staying at the MSP Intercontinental. Will pre-game at the Stub and Herbs tent. Excited to check another B1G stadium off the books.

Fun fact! Because the Gophers were off the 1999-00 schedule, and we had The Grapes of Wrath rehearsals during the 2001 game, this will actually be the first LBJ I've seen in person.

You may go on with your day.

Any chance the band will…

Any chance the band will travel for the Little Brown Jug? Assuming it's a firm no, given that it's two weeks before they play at Sparty. Barring playoffs, it's almost certainly the only game I'll make this year.

Anyone know where the M…

Anyone know where the M sections are at Huntington Bank Stadium? Just bought flights from LA.

Californian here. So…

Californian here. So frustrated by the lack of start time transparency. It keeps me from attending games. By the time the networks announce the start times, I'm often priced out of flights. I'm trying to visit every B1G stadium (Rutgers will be last) and don't want to spend $600 or use 72,000 Sky Miles because the announcements aren't made until a week out. /vent

Because I get irrationally…

Because I get irrationally worried about Week 1 nonconference opponents, I took notice that Mikey Keene, Fresno State QB and UCF transfer, threw for 366 yards and 4 TDs in an upset win at Purdue. Bulldogs are the defending Mountain West champs.

We've got an incredibly difficult schedule next year, even when the B1G slate gets redone.

LA native and 2003 M grad here. Go Doyers!

All the above is accurate - as well as that the Bruins haven't been nationally relevant since 1999 or so. And even when they've been good, it can still be a blase fanbase. Go look at the ratios of Wisconsin-to-UCLA fans in their 1990's Rose Bowls. I was at the 1994 game, when it was 90/10 Badgers.

It's much more of a semi-commuter school walled in amidst the most expensive neighborhoods in Los Angeles than it is the typical B1G school's balance of studies/football/fun. Much tamer experience compared to M.

Have also seen M Football at AT&T 2x (L/W), Rose Bowl 3x (L/L/L), Notre Dame 2x (L/L), Sugar Bowl (W), Utah (L); and M Basketball in San Antonio for the Sweet 16 (L) and at UCLA 2x (W/L). Have seen a bunch of non-UM Rose Bowls too.

Got to know Soony Saad …

Got to know Soony Saad (Dearborn/2010 Men's Soccer) a bit while working on a Middle Eastern soccer project. He actually had a pretty terrific qualifying campaign for the Cedars, who surpassed expectations and were several inopportune moments away from advancing towards the IFC playoffs. Scored at Iran; scored twice in South Korea, where he'd previously played. Keeps in close touch with Justin Meram (Shelby Twp), still bangin' away in MLS and for Iraq.

LA native/resident, 2003…

LA native/resident, 2003 grad and married dad of two. Have never been to an NCAA tournament basketball game. Delta status and the lack of M events I've attended over the last two years made it an easy decision to spend a few Skymiles. Zona game + watching USMNT from a stadium club won't be awful. Good 24 hours ahead. GO BLUE BEAT NOVA

Welp. We all knew it was going to happen soon. Was hoping he'd stick around for a second year. Good luck, Mike, and thank you. Hope our orbits align should we need a Harbaugh replacement X years from now. Go Blue!

HOW DARE Cato June not run…

HOW DARE Cato June not run down the player that would ultimately become one of the greatest NFL TEs of all-time?! (woof, that citrus bowl)

Have been to OSU twice, ND…

Have been to OSU twice, ND twice, AT&T twice, Rose Bowl twice, PSU, Wisconsin, Utah, Sugar Bowl. OSU easily the worst, but nothing beyond anything you'd expect. There were also plenty of friendly fans there. Most of these games, it was just one person making us feel uncomfortable for like 45 seconds and as a Dodger fan I've had worse experiences in San Francisco and San Diego.

If there's a "worst" away game experience, could we (neutral site) Alabama, 2012? Zipped in and out; hardly tailgated; team was never in the game. Wisconsin 2019 was bad, because with a 11am game, there was no time to tailgate and then the game was awful. Can't say I've had a truly bad experience looking back at the list.

Feels and memories. Grew up…

Feels and memories. Grew up as a Wisconsin fan in Southern California because my mom was a Badger and we saw them in two Rose Bowls that decade (and again at the end of that season). Last year, while looking at schools as a senior, we caught a Wisconsin-Purdue game at Camp Randall in which Brees, as a freshman, set an NCAA record for pass attempts (with something like 83). Anyway, the Wisco fandom changed Week 4 when that M defense admirably shut down Ron Dayne and won a tooooooough road game. This was only my third Saturday at the Big House, following the ND and Rice games that season. The 1999 team was so, so good, and reading the MGoBlog oral history of the Orange Bowl, you could read how much it affected them that they weren't playing for the nat'l championship that season. Recall walking to the Stadium knowing that the weather would probably affect Brees and Purdue more than it would Michigan. It did! A win more comfortable than would be expected. The weather carried over for the next few days, because I recall taking a train the following day to Chicago to go on tour with Phish, and there was similar weather while we tailgated outside the show at Rosemont Horizon. So many good memories! To be 18 again. Man, the B1G was so good in '99. W/M/Sparty finishing at 4/5/6 IIRC, plus Brees and Antwaun Randle El headlining some impressive talent.

Fragmentation has allowed…

Fragmentation has allowed other networks that did not exist (Longhorn, Big Ten, etc) 15-20 years ago to buy rights, spreading live events - which draw better ratings than studio shows - across a wider landscape. As this happened over the past 15 years, they failed to continue to produce highly charismatic anchors that drew viewership (Patrick/Olbermann/Mayne/Scott/Eisen/Berman/Cohn), and in the 1990's dramatically captured the zeitgeist of sports and humor without taking themselves too seriously. There was poor top-executive leadership as they lost their corner of the sports market.

I'd agree with the OP that there's not much use for ESPN or Sportscenter beyond live games and Gameday. And thankfully no one with brain worms has entered this thread with LOL ITS CUZ OF THE LIBS

Los Angeles native; 2003…

Los Angeles native; 2003 grad. Always try to make one game a year. This is the one! My mom (an Ohio native) and wife (LA native) are both Badgers, and I grew up watching Wisconsin football through the 1990's, which was a very good time to do so. Saw them defeat UCLA in 1994 and though my allegiances completely changed in 1999, still saw them beat Stanford at the Rose Bowl that season (shortly before rushing home to watch Tom Brady and David Terrell take down Alabama).

Let's hope for no rain. I'll always remember that 1999 game between undefeated Michigan and Purdue, and Jr. Drew Brees was already probably the best QB in the country. Was very happy for the steady rain that afternoon!

Zach Smith arrested in 2009…

Zach Smith arrested in 2009 at UF for throwing Courtney Smith against a wall. Meyer uses several influential UF figures (and Zach Smith’s mother and grandfather) to pressure Courtney Smith to drop charges. Courtney continues to be serially abused for the better part of a decade. Holy schnykies, what a scumbag. (Meyer, Smith, enablers, etc.)

I live in Los Angeles and have been to Ann Arbor once since UTL and still found this interesting. More breadth of content/reporting/analysis for the site is always a good thing. If Brian writes it (also applies to, like, Spencer Hall, Katie Baker, and a few others), I will read it.

Shannon Brown. I'm an LA

Shannon Brown. I'm an LA native and a very big Lakers fan, and while I wouldn't consider Magic on this list - he was drafted two years before I was born, so I never saw him play in college - Shannon Brown was probably my favorite Laker role player from the 2009/10 championship squads.

I work in sports broadcasting and have gotten to know Anson Carter fairly well. He's a great guy, but like Magic, I wasn't yet in college to have built up any animosity towards him while he was at State.

Kirk Gibson, for obvious reasons. Eww, too many Sparties.

Bad take

First off, it's Petr Klima, not Peter Klima.

Second, this is what Brian's job is. He's a journalist, and he does an excellent job - better than anyone else who covers the team - in keeping Michigan alumni and college football fans informed about what's happening with the program. The site isn't exclusively reporting-based, but Brian has a very good track record of responsibly reporting news and relying on sources who have served him well in the past. His responsibility, like any reporter, is not to pick and choose only the positive reports that please the athletic department, but to keep people as informed as possible to what is happening within the program. To think that he should ask himself  "why he is reporting it and whether it helps the team we all come here to be entertained by?" is the pure antithesis of journalism. If that's something you actually believe, there's a position waiting for you as the SID for the University of North Korea Fightin' Propagandists.

Hey, Shawn Hunwick, here's your turtle back, safe and sound.

NHL 94

The Kamloops Blazers' NHL 94 game celebration was a WHL meme that lasted about two weeks before opponents quickly tired of it.  I'm very surprised that 1990-94 born players picked up on a trend that occurred so early in their childhood.  I've told players on my own team that the reason that I follow the Denver Broncos was because of Tecmo Bowl, only to be met with blank stares.

Major Juniors vs NCAA: FIGHT! For those who didn't click on the link to the Edmonton Journal, here are a couple more of Linden Rowat's quotes to balance the one quote plucked for the purpose of slandering the CHL: "I don't really know what I'm going to do pro-wise if I get an opportunity but I'm kind of setting up for going to the CIS and playing some (university) hockey and get a degree" "I learned a lot about living the (hockey) lifestyle, being a good person, being a good community person," added Rowat. "Teammates, friends, living with different families, it builds your character" Rowat now has four years of a full ride paid for in college - the CHL's educational system is in full effect here. Also, here are some amazing WHL (and WHL prospect) names that should be read in a Canadian accent: Dalton Sward Mackenzie Skapski Mason Wilgosh Rigby Burgart Brodie Melnychuk
EVT-PDX We were actually down in Portland last night - Everett extended its winning streak to 11 games by taking down the Winterhawks 4-3 in a game with a terrific, playoff-type atmosphere (though not Yost). Lombardi Dean Lombardi wasn’t the GM of the Kings at the time of the Cammalleri signing – that was former GM Dave Taylor (per previous post). As I can count the number of UM hockey games that I’ve seen since graduating on one hand, I don’t have any valid opinions on the current state of the Michigan Hockey Program. Still, from the head coaches, assistant coaches, and other hockey figures I’ve spend time with, there is a strong prevailing view that Michigan is not as good at developing talent as it is at simply plucking the best players from around North America. Since joining the Western Hockey League I haven’t had a conversation with one person that has defended Michigan’s ability to cultivate and develop talent. This is not just NCAA vs Juniors: FIGHT issues here – the people whom I’ve had discussions about this have also spent time on the coaching staffs of various NCAA programs and are more neutral in the NCAA vs Major Junior tug of war. As someone who grew up in Los Angeles and has devoted many painful years of my life towards following the Kings, this Lombardi-Johnson spat irks me, and I’m disappointed that Dean's unneccessary comments were publicized. I just wanted to convey that it’s not just one flustered GM who harbors these opinions – it’s definitely a commonly held view amongst many respected hockey figures. I’ll let myself out.
