I've definitely lost a good bit of faith in Hoke over the last three months, but I think he can be a good coach here in the long run. He has a Rich Rodriguez problem, however. I'm not sure what the dynamic he has with Al is, but I certainly am under the impression that he spends most of his time on the defense and probably leaves the offense to its own devices.
Can that work? Of course. But it bit Rodriguez badly, and it may prove costly for Hoke. This situation isn't entirely analogous to Rich Rod's, of course. Hoke exerts more influence on our offense than I think Rodriuez did on our defense (we can argue about the details, hypothetical person who disagrees), and I think that to the extent Hoke is involved with the offense, he is a negative influence. Hoke has made it abundantly clear that he does not tolerate the spread (which I think is a silly, stupid position to stake out, but if you're angling to be the knee-jerk rebound coach at Michigan post-Rodriguez, it makes sense. Or he's just a little dumb...neither is especially reassuring). I think in being so blindly dedicated to MANBALL, Hoke is limiting our options and it's costing us.
Ultimately, if Hoke can get rid of Borges and bring in an offensive staff that shows at least reasonable improvement next year, I'll be happy with 9-4 if we don't shit the bed offensively like we have this year. Can we go 9-4 with Borges next year? Sure. But my faith in him is shot; I'm willing to give Brady time but Borges is a problem. Not the only problem, but a big one. Someone can argue that Funk and Gardner and youth are also problems, but I think that those problems can get better. So long as we have Borges, however, I think we'll be saying, "wait until next year, then we'll really see what we've got." And I'm not sure I can deal with that.
I'm not sure the fact that it wasn't tested immediately is a scandal. It's obviously not ideal, but a quick google search reveals that Memphis has ~12,000 untested rape kits, Texas is trying to test ~20,000 old kits that were never tested and that suburban communities around Chicago frequently test less than 2/3 of the rape kits they receive.
Obviously athletes receive favorable treatment relative to other people; not in ever case or by everyone, but it happens. Any attempts by police to prevent the truth from coming out are despicable. But let's not indict the police department just yet. Evidence testing (DNA, etc.) by police in real life doesn't work like it does on TV, and there's a lot we should be doing to fix it. But let's not assume the worst.

Maybe it's just because I'm inclined to be pessimistic about these things, but I think we should hold off on giving the new defensive coaching staff too many accolades just yet. I'm not saying the old coaches were better (clearly many, many, many, many things were very wrong there), and I'm very happy with the coaches that are here now, especially Mattison.
But the ND game is troubling for a lot of reasons. I think that the ND game is the only game we can take much from going into the rest of the season. And ND should have wrapped that game up a couple of times--the only reason we were still in it at the very end is because of a couple of very unforced errors (Wood fumble, Rees derp) and some other errors you can call forced but were probably just Rees being Rees. And when our defense needed to stop ND from scoring with a minute left, they failed pretty spectacularly. The touchdown bust on that drive is almost certainly a direct result of a poor decision by Mattison.
And before we conclude that San Diego State is better than Uconn (not that they won't be; the jury is gonna be out for another couple of months), keep in mind Uconn went to the Fiesta Bowl last year. They weren't an awful team. I also think San Diego State could have made that a game if Lindley had played better. His passes were off a lot of the time, and I don't think much of that can be ascribed to having a defender in his face. He just played poorly.
What I'm trying to say is that I hope you're right, but I wouldn't get too excited. I think that coaching may have something to do with turnovers, but we haven't seen enough of these coaches to call them great. There is a good chance we've been lucky. And I agree that ND last year would have put up better numbers with Crist in the whole time. But I think the diary numbers indicate that maybe we should brace ourselves for a rougher big ten season than I think we're hoping for because these things take time to fix. I think he generally did run his program the right way, at least in terms of caring for players and putting their education and welfare first. I think the issue is not so much human decency (I don't think Kelly was callous or uncaring about the death of someone he was responsible for), but that at Michigan the coaches put less pressure on the support staff than at ND--in this one specific regard, at least. I know michigan's lifts were at less than half height, but keep in mind the wind was blowing faster than 28 mph and they were still up. Either they didn't have a policy or they weren't adhering to it if you believe that said policy existed before the accident. I'm just saying that the coaching staff at Michigan maybe didn't say that the videographers had to go up all the way because the coaches didn't really care, and that maybe previous Michigan coaches were just like Kelly in that they did care and didn't understand the potential danger that caused. And I think Kelly's staff made it very clear that they wanted the best film they could get, regardless of the weather. I think a lot of people never had reason to think about the possibility of wind knocking over a lift, and I'm guessing Kelly probably thought it wasn't something that would ever happen. Doesn't excuse ignorance or negligence, but I don't think people think about it when the lifts are used every day and only two have fallen in the last ten years or so

Whatever you may have heard about michigan going inside to practice that day isn't exactly true. and by "isn't exactly true," i mean that it isn't true at all. And from my personal understanding, the vast majority of coaches don't pay attention to those things until people get hurt or killed. Other people are paid to watch out for such things, but they have no real power over coaches because the coaches are the ones who say whether or not they keep their jobs. It's a terrible system. I'm shocked more student workers haven't been hurt or killed or that seems don't seem to have changed since the Notre Dame incident. Also, "properly secured" is not a phrase I would use to describe Michigan's hydraulic lifts. Probably not a good phrase to describe any college football teams' lifts, actually.

Whatever you may have heard about michigan going inside to practice that day isn't exactly true. and by "isn't exactly true," i mean that it isn't true at all. And from my personal understanding, the vast majority of coaches don't pay attention to those things until people get hurt or killed. Other people are paid to watch out for such things, but they have no real power over coaches because the coaches are the ones who say whether or not they keep their jobs. It's a terrible system. I'm shocked more student workers haven't been hurt or killed or that seems don't seem to have changed since the Notre Dame incident. Also, "properly secured" is not a phrase I would use to describe Michigan's hydraulic lifts. Probably not a good phrase to describe any college football teams' lifts, actually.
