Gardner's passing performance has everything to do with how well his line blocks for him.
He needs more time.
The line is improving, but they are not "there" yet.
They are doing better with run blocking (zone blocking) than pass blocking.
Ben Braden had a bad day.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||O Line||
The O line is improving game to game. In the second half, they were really opening some holes, and Green was hitting them for nice gains.
Pass blocking is improving, but Braden is a sieve.
Gardner's performance, like any quarterback, depends to a great extent on the pass blocking.
When Michigan drives ended in punts today, it was because they did not pound the rock.
Too much passing, with poor pass blocking, meant doom.

|11 weeks 14 hours ago||The Score was NOT indicative of how the team played:||
Michigan played their hearts out.
The O line is a LOT better than last year. We can run the football, and I think we out-gained ND on the ground. Pass blocking was mediocre, but that takes more time and experience. It will improve.
Gardner does not play well under pressure. His turnovers killed us.
3rd down conversions were non-existent, and I put a lot of this on Gardner and/or poor pass blocking.
A big factor was penalties. I predicted the refs would give ND 7-10 points, and they certainly did.
The D actually played pretty well, and really stifled the ND running game. They needed more pressure on Golson.
Golson is a beast. ND is a very good team.
Do not underestimate the Michigan team. Yes, they got an ass-kicking. Hopefully this will leave a chip on their shoulder for the rest of the season.
Thank God I do not have to watch NBC sports ever again.

So yesterday you have Penn State...a proud old program with great fans...humiliated by the scandal and loaded down with drastically limited scholarships and a bowl ban for years to come.
Despite all that, they packed their stadium with 108,000 loyal fans. The team played their hearts out, and their freshman quarterback played well. And in a 4 overtime circus, they won. This game will be the highlight of their season, and those fans will never forget it. Good for them and good for their program.

Why do we not put all linemen in steel kneee braces to prevent at least some of these injuries?
300 pound linemen are a natural set-up to put a large amount of abnormal stress on their relatively little knees. In playing their positions they do not need to pivot as much as a running back or cornerback or quarterback does. I would think the minor loss of mobility could be compensated and the potential gain from avoiding injuries would be significant.

As I understand it, while the NCAA tests for PEDs in tournaments, for the most part testing is left up to the individual school. And I don't know about any testing in high schools.
So when you see a physically huge and dominant team like 2012 Alabama, should'nt the average fan at least think about the possibility that those giants are juicing?
Was it not obvious when we looked at Jim Mandarich, Barry Bonds, Roger Clements, et al?

Then you get away from someone who has been so influential in your life and you realize that it's such a rare breed, that the world is full of liars and cheaters and manipulators. |3 years 46 weeks ago||Brandon vs Martin||
Dave Brandon will undoubtably make a better choice than Bill Martin....If for no other reason than having learned from the RichRod years.
I feel terrible for the players, for the recuiting class, for RichRod, his coaches, and their families.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Well Said!||
Perhaps the anti-RR crowd had better insight into RichRod than I had.
I still think he is a good coach, but not a good enough manager. He did not have good enough assistants.
What makes Jo Pa successful at Penn State?
High-caliber teams require more than just a head coach.
The work load is huge, and must be delegated. Every coach has to be excellent.
Brandon & Harbaugh need to build a football coaching school in this program.
Just like in business...seek out and hire the best young coaching talent, build a program to teach them how to coach the details, and mold them into the best young coaches in the country.
Then when you lose a coach, you have a replacement on the shelf.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||On Friday RichRod addressed||
the team about his possibly getting fired, and emotionally told them it was out of his control.
This must have demoralized the team, and they sure played that way:
|3 years 46 weeks ago||I have been||
a die hard RR backer, but not any more. As the Genuinely Sarcastic post said, "its the details".
This game, along with too many others, was pathetic.
The players deserve better coaching.
In retrospect, it was Jim Casteel at WVA who was just as important as RichRod.
Without Casteel, RichRod is just a good Offensive Coordinator.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Yes||
I think DB made the decision when he took his job that he would never change coaches before the end of the bowl games. This way the teams get to play their bowl games with their present coaches without all the ugliness of the transition. The mess that happened the last time was ugly for Michigan, West Virginia and LSU.
This is why he says he will not evaluate a team till after its season is over.
If Brandon has decided to make a change, it is already a done deal and will be announced the day after Stanford plays their bowl game. Short and Sweet.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||RichRod||
I saw RichRod on Mgoblue.com say that he was going to take the travel team to a more remote location for the night before the game. This was pre-planned, with nothing sinister about it.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Sorry||
Please remove the thread.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||We win either way||
I am a RichRod supporter, and I hope DB keeps him.
However, I have come to accept the idea that he is probably history.
If we get Harbaugh, he is a great coach.
Michigan and its fans win with either coach.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||This is a big disappointment||
For Michigan to lose an in-state 4 star talent who has been a big UM fan and has visited the team many times is just a fail.

RR says he's more worried about the (kickers) getting the confidence to perform in a game.
Having watched the place kickers all year, they really do have the distance on their kicks, and they were not recruited if they were not acccurate.
The problem is confidence...psychology. You know that is the case when the guy bangs the upright from 25 yards. I think that kicking in front of 112,000 fans plus national TV just freaks them out.
Surely the University has a sports psychologist in the faculty whom they could call upon.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||Sadly,||
Shafer was allegedly hamstrung by RichRod. Thus, even if RR would have kept him, he would not have had a free hand.

If OSU is spending 70% more than UM, they may have a big advantage.
If RichRod needs more resources, provide them.
The G.S. opinion talked about details throughout this program. Well maybe coach needs to develope a bigger , more effective organization so that his people can recruit, teach & monitor a lot more details .
|3 years 51 weeks ago||Pre-emptive Move?||
Dave Brandon said recently that the Big Ten would likely expand again in the next couple years.
He said they would add teams with big markets.
That could mean Rutgers and/or UConn leaving the Big East for the Big Ten.
So perhaps the Big East is beafing up before it takes a big hit.......

IMHO, Judy Van Horn is taking the fall for the compliance department.
While she did nothing wrong in this fiaso, she WAS captain of the ship.
The last guy who needs to go is Scott Draper, who was Brad Labadie's boss, and who let Labadie get away with not doing his job. A lot of this is on Draper. Those 2 guys are the real culprits in this whole mess. IMHO

This just illustrates how all the negative stuff about RR have impacted recruiting. What you said was exactly true, and perhaps the first time this father has heard a positive point of view. This is exactly what RR was talking about at his press conference this week. Good work.

|4 years 2 weeks ago||Experience VS Coaching||
As the season progresses, we can see many of the rookie players individually getting better... (Demens, Avery, Vinopal). We expect this.
We also see veterans struggle more (Mouton, Ezeh, even Roh & Kovacs). We do not expect this.
IMHO, as this season progresses, and the defensive disaster continues, the scale tips more and more to the problem being Schizophrenic Defensive Coaching, not rookie players.
|4 years 2 weeks ago||Thought Process...||
I wonder if Denard begins a play with a determination that this is going to be a pass, and he just stick to it.
It would simplify the thought process to not even consider the scramble / run.
OTOH, to keep the scramble / run option in the thought process does complicate the play for him.
By excluding that option, he can focus on his reads and find a way to pass the football.
While he says the game is slowing down for him, it is still happening very fast, and maybe at this point in his development, unconciously his brain is not ready for another option.
|4 years 2 weeks ago||Chelios||
Chelios always worked out with a guru in California, and Hudler had his best season after joining Chelios out there. Cleary went out there this summer, also. I understand Draper and Datsyuk are workout freaks.
|4 years 2 weeks ago||Epic missed tackle:||
Jonas Mouton appeared to have Ford near the sideline, then he just went flailing off into space.
|4 years 2 weeks ago||His Official Visits||
were CAL, USC, and Michigan.
Now I am not him, but why would he choose USC when they have a new coach and are under major sanctions from the NCAA?
CAL? Well CAL is a good academic school, but no better than Michigan. And they are certainly not very competitive in the PAC 10 or BCS.
UM? UM has great academics, has 3 great quarterbacks, an offensive genius coach, and is a 2 hour drive away from home.
To me, this choice is a no-brainer.
DeAnthony, Go Blue!

Another point to be made is how well RR recruited not only Denard, but Tate as well.
By so-doing, Denard's head-butt did not leave Michigan with a Freshman QB.

IMHO, Penn State is one heck-of-a-lot better team than anyone gave them credit for.
Royster is a darn good running back, who is tough to bring down. He reminds me of Brandon Minor.
That freshman quarterback made a perfect throw to the end zone flag for their last touchdown in the first half.
This in no way excuses our defense, I am just saying....
|4 years 3 weeks ago||Wisdom||
I remember back in August, after reading this: http://mgoblog.com/content/preview-2010-secondary and http://mgoblog.com/content/preview-2010-heuristics-and-stupid-prediction,
I was afraid Brian was going to off himself.
"The next day Henri the Otter of Ennui made his earliest-ever appearance on the blog (setting a record that will probably stand for all time) while I enumerated the options left at corner, mentioning Richard Nixon twice before a nominal first-string player at the semi-public fall scrimmage."
"Meanwhile, literally every backup except the aforementioned Williams has never played a meaningful snap at Michigan because they arrived two months ago or, in the case of James Rogers, was just one of those guys who seems like they're never going to play from day one. I could just point you to their recruiting profiles, tell you they'll be in the conversation for worst secondary in the league, and resume cowering in a closet. Previewing this position group is almost totally pointless: I've never really seen anyone play. They're probably going to be bad."
"7-5 is still the call, but with the secondary attrition 6-6 is more likely than 8-4; before I thought the reverse."
Well guess what?
The man was/is just a genius.

|4 years 3 weeks ago||Good Guy||
This is what I have been thinking about for several weeks, and actually since RR arrived.
He is a genuinely nice guy. Everybody who deals with him likes him, especially his players. He is good at recruiting. He is intelligent in football, and makes reasoned decisions in a timely manner.
Furthermore, he is always a pleasant, engaging, and intelligent interview. And he is open to the public.
All of this despite the setbacks and the controversy and the prejudice.
He represents our university well.
He is a "Michigan Man".
|4 years 4 weeks ago||Woolfolk's injury||
I hope he can come back from his injury 100%.
Severe injuries and surgery do not always produce perfect results.
|4 years 4 weeks ago||The Demens Multiplier||
I think we all UNDERESTIMATE how much a competent Mike can improve our defense. If his teamates can rely on him to be where he is supposed to be and make the plays he is supposed to make, then Mouton, Kovacs & Roh can focus on their own assignments and everyone plays better.
|4 years 4 weeks ago||This is the Demens Effect||
The voting coaches have seen that after many years of "he who will not be named", and the cost to 2 coaches their jobs, a competent player is now at Middle Line Backer.
|4 years 6 weeks ago||Easily Duped||
Unfortunately, opposing coaches by now know Obi very well........
He is so easily duped out of position that it isn't funny.
Furthermore, he cannot fight off any block and make a play.
He has to be the most ineffective Mike in the history of football.
He has single-handedly made this defense look terrible for 3 years, and he has cost Schafer and Hopson their coaching jobs. He may yet cost RichRod his coaching job.
I cannot believe they still play this guy.
|4 years 6 weeks ago||No Doubt about it||
This was a gutsy hire made by Bill Martin, Dave Brandon & company.
We RichRod fans have suffered through the lean years, but now he has every team in the Big Ten afraid of his team. And this is just the beginning!
