21 weeks 23 hours ago Good Decision

This is absolutely the right decision.

Peters has suffered at least 2 blows to his head in the last few weeks, and has suffered at least 1 concussion.  He needs time to heal.  This is best for him in the long run, and the best for Michigan football in the long run.  Another head bump today could literally end Peters' career.

Good decision by the medical staff and Jim Harbaugh.

23 weeks 6 days ago Unless it rains..

Then Sparty will be favored.

23 weeks 6 days ago It is not luck!

Perhaps OSU is lucky, but it is foolhardy to asssume that the difference in injuries is luck.

Maybe by playing upper classmen, their bones and joints are more mature.

Maybe they train differently.

Maybe they wear different knee supports.

Maybe they play and practice on different turf.

24 weeks 3 days ago Well, yeah...

He is the new kid.  Freshman.  Physically "young".  They don't want him to get hurt.  They don't want to throw him to the wolves and blow away his confidence.  Bad things can happen.   Remember Devin Gardner?

25 weeks 5 hours ago Pep Hamilton

The quarterback play overall has regressed this year. Speight played worse than last year, & Jok was awful.
The coaching difference from 2016 is Hamilton, who has been a failure every place he coached. I hope he doesn't ruin Peters.

25 weeks 3 days ago OMG!

God Bless you and your wife.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Your daughter is in God's hands.

30 weeks 6 days ago Isaac

If Isaac has an injured spleen, he will be out for an extended length of time.  Note that he was holding his left lower ribs, where the spleen is located.

31 weeks 6 days ago Great Presser

This presser really lets us know that Harbaugh is fully aware of the problems that his team had in this game, and that he intends to fix them.  That includes play calling and individual player mistakes.  And he threw nobody under the bus.  What a great coach.

33 weeks 5 days ago The Submarine

Harbaugh's third year team is going to surprise everyone. Wilton Speight is going to have a very good year.

34 weeks 2 days ago But But But ...

We no longer have Fred Jackson coaching the running backs!

40 weeks 4 days ago Great Coaching:

It took years of great coaching to make this play happen.

The block by Seyferth is a thing of beauty,

but the play call by the BACKUP quarterback Seyferth, his execution of the pitch and his block are just excellent execution.

Well done by all concerned!

2 years 15 weeks ago Harbaugh pounding on Rudock!

The visual of Harbaugh pounding on Rudock was precisely when the season changed for Rudock and the team.

Up until then Rudock had been too cautious & tentative.

Harbaugh figured this out about his quarterback and pounded on him to make him mad, get his adrenaline going, put some fight in him, to fire him up.

He figured out Rudock, and he solved the problem.

That is when Rudock's performance went parabolic.

2 years 21 weeks ago God bless you, Chad,

2 years 22 weeks ago "Blackhawks" is offensive ...

They should be the Chicago Blackbirds.

2 years 24 weeks ago DeVeon Smith

Maybe he is playing through an injury?

2 years 24 weeks ago Look at the helmets:

Which team had the lower helmets?  Whose line won the battle?  The photo says it all.

2 years 25 weeks ago Health

I suspect his retirement is for something far worse than seizures.

Godspeed, Jerry Kill!

2 years 28 weeks ago Compared to last year

The quarterback position is so much more manageable this year.  Rudock keeps his head, makes the play he can see, and throws it away if he must.

Quarterback play is not a tire fire like last year.

Rudock is no Tom Brady, but as long as he is not turning the ball over constantly, the defense and the ground game give us a chance to win.

2 years 29 weeks ago Injury

Do you have any sensory numbness or muscle weakness in your arms or legs?  If not, you likely do not have a nerve injury.

There is no way to tell about a disc injury withou an MRI.

This is probably related to your weight lifting accident.

Try this:

No weight lifting

Stretching 4 times daily. Yoga works

Apply heating pad

Sleep on firm mattress with lots of neck / head support

Take ibuprofen 800 mg 3 times daily

Take muscle relaxant if you have it

Massage if avalable

This will take longer than you will expect

See your doctor

Go Blue.

3 years 8 weeks ago The Coaches

This might be a subject for another thread:

How would Rich Rod and Brady Hoke have succeeded (or not) without DB looking over their shoulders in every meeting?

3 years 11 weeks ago Could Wheatley play both ways?

Could Wheatley play Tight End and WDE?

3 years 13 weeks ago Jay's unspoken role...

Maybe Jay Harbaugh's primary role will be recruiting...a surrogate for his dad.

3 years 13 weeks ago Khakis???

What happened to his pants?

They must be in the laundry!

3 years 14 weeks ago Agreed

IMHO, it has been years since our running backs have had any coaching whatsoever.

Missed holes, missed blocks, not following the blockers, not knowing the timing of:  "when to give up on the blocking scheme and make your own hole".

I bet we will see a huge leap in running back productivity.

3 years 17 weeks ago When Harbaugh is introduced...

as the UM coach, MGoBlog needs a plan to celebrate...

After all, "the Ruskies don't take crap with out a plan" ...

Muppets? PB&J time?  A new banner?  All of the above?

Fire, smoke, cordite coming fom the computer?

Whatever, it has to be big.

;)

3 years 17 weeks ago Ace, you are in good company...

President John F. Kennedy had adrenal insufficiency.

3 years 18 weeks ago If Harbaugh comes,

mgoblog will go up in smoke!

3 years 19 weeks ago From another angle:

By all accounts, Harbaugh has great regard (affection) for his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Therefore,

if he was NOT coming to UM, he would not delay his decision and string them along, when they should be actively persuing some other, viable candidate.

3 years 19 weeks ago Better candidates than Harbaugh?

I think that would be a matter of priorities...

i.e:  If your priority is a nice guy who loves his players, you want a clone of Brady Hoke.

OTOH, if your priority is a guy who will kick some ass and win games, you want Harbaugh.

Regarding the wife, buy her a Gulfstream 6 and she can be in San Fran in 3 hours.

3 years 19 weeks ago Horse Betting...

Professionals watch the odds and the timing.  When there is a sudden shift in the odds just before the race goes off, that is the way to bet.  It is telling you that the insiders know which horse is going to win.

3 years 20 weeks ago The other coaches?

3 years 23 weeks ago Running Backs

The backs continue to not follow their blockers and hit the holes.

It is long past time coach Jackson retires.

3 years 23 weeks ago He acts

stoned.

3 years 23 weeks ago Weed?

Gardner plays like he is stoned.

3 years 28 weeks ago The D-line is playing fine.

But if a ball carrier gets past them, it is a 27 yard gain.

3 years 29 weeks ago Legacy Position coaches.

IMHO, the problem is Funk and Jackson.  Coaches whom Hoke was saddled with.

3 years 30 weeks ago Hire Pat Narduzzi

That is all.

3 years 31 weeks ago He looks fast!

Could he be another Jake Ryan?

3 years 31 weeks ago Devin Gardner

Gardner's passing performance has everything to do with how well his line blocks for him.

He needs more time.

The line is improving, but they are not "there" yet.

They are doing better with run blocking (zone blocking) than pass blocking.

Ben Braden had a bad day.

3 years 31 weeks ago O Line

The O line is improving game to game.  In the second half, they were really opening some holes, and Green was hitting them for nice gains.

Pass blocking is improving, but Braden is a sieve.

Gardner's performance, like any quarterback, depends to a great extent on the pass blocking.

When Michigan drives ended in punts today, it was because they did not pound the rock.

Too much passing, with poor pass blocking, meant doom.

3 years 32 weeks ago To win on the road, you have to be tough... Real Tough

You cannot teach toughness, Brady

It does no good to preach it, Brady.

Do not bother to talk about it, Brady.

You have to put your team through the wringer and see who comes out the other end.

Some will not make it.

You have to be tougher on your team than the opposing team will be.

See:  Easy Company, 101st Airborne, and Currahee Mountain.

See:  Bo Schembechler, UM, 1969

This is the difference between Bo and Brady.

3 years 32 weeks ago The Score was NOT indicative of how the team played:

Michigan played their hearts out.

The O line is a LOT better than last year.  We can run the football, and I think we out-gained ND on the ground.  Pass blocking was mediocre, but that takes more time and experience.  It will improve.

Gardner does not play well under pressure.  His turnovers killed us.

3rd down conversions were non-existent, and I put a lot of this on Gardner and/or poor pass blocking.

A big factor was penalties.  I predicted the refs would give ND 7-10 points, and they certainly did.

The D actually played pretty well, and really stifled the ND running game.  They needed more pressure on Golson.

Golson is a beast.  ND is a very good team.

Do not underestimate the Michigan team.  Yes, they got an ass-kicking.  Hopefully this will leave a chip on their shoulder for the rest of the season.

Thank God I do not have to watch NBC sports ever again.

3 years 33 weeks ago O.T: Ohio history

The Shawnee Indians (under chiefs Blue Jacket and Tecumseh) fought like heck in the 1790's to keep Ohio...That was some nasty business, with whites burned at the stake, dismembered alive, etc.

Here is a great book about it:  The Frontiersmen by Allen EckertAllen Eckert   Allen Eckert

4 years 6 weeks ago My father-in-law is 92.

He flew an SB2C HellDiver off of the USS Phillipine Sea in WW2.

To this day he can tell you exactly how to fly that plane, dive and hit the target, and catch the cable to land it.

He grew up the son of a share-cropper.  His mother had died in child birth.  They had no electricity or running water.  His sister sewed his pants from horse blankets.

He is one tough SOB.  I know of nobody in my (baby boom) generation who could match his mental & physical ruggedness.

"The greatest generation", indeed!

4 years 8 weeks ago Despite all his success,

(2 Olympic Golds, 1 Stanley Cup, World Championship, Junior World Championships)

Babcock is still underated.

Another coach with the same players could have easily lost this tournament.

Under great pressure, Babcock just outcoached (by far) the best coaches in the world.

4 years 8 weeks ago What does Sidney Crosby say?

"I think he instills a lot of confidence in the group," Crosby said of Babcock. "He leads by example and I think you can see that he trusts every guy out there, and the situations he puts them in, he puts them in for a reason. Definitely to have a group come together this quick isn't easy, and everyone's kind of laughing at the ball hockey in August, but you know what, all those little things go a long way sometimes. He definitely did a great job, his whole staff, of preparing us and getting us ready for all the adjustments we needed to make on the big ice."

Brandon does not want his choice for H.C. to fail for the same reason.  My bet is that Brandon was the impetus behind Hoke's move to fire Borges & hire Nussmeier.

What part did Brandon play in this firing of Borges and hiring of Nussmeier?

Would Hoke have made the change on his own?

4 years 21 weeks ago injured

We are not being told about it, but when I watch Gardner, I see a guy who is in constant pain, and getting beat up more on every play.

He is a true warrior to keep going out there and taking hits for his team.

4 years 24 weeks ago Dantonio

Dantonio is an excellent coach, as is Narduzzi.

No doubt, the better team won the game.

4 years 26 weeks ago Academic chapter on knee braces reducing risk of ACl tear:

On the basis of the data published in that paper, we compute that the rate of ACL injury in the nonbraced cadets was 3.0 times higher (95%CI: 1.0-9.2) than in braced cadets. It should be noted that the number of ACL injuries was small. Only 16 ACL injuries occurred: four in the braced and 12 in the nonbraced condition.

4 years 27 weeks ago Fitzgerald Toussaint

I wonder how Toussaint feels when he lines up to carry the ball into such a poorly designed / coached play?su

4 years 27 weeks ago The Problem is Coaching

Not the players.

4 years 27 weeks ago A

It will take 3 more years to build an offensive line.

That would be true if Schembechler were your coach.

4 years 27 weeks ago What Goes Around...

I was at the UM overtime win against Penn State in 2002.  That was one of the best games I have ever attended.  I will never forget it.

So yesterday you have Penn State...a proud old program with great fans...humiliated by the scandal and loaded down with drastically limited scholarships and a bowl ban for years to come.

Despite all that, they packed their stadium with 108,000 loyal fans.  The team played their hearts out, and their freshman quarterback played well.  And in a 4 overtime circus, they won.  This game will be the highlight of their season, and those fans will never forget it.  Good for them and good for their program.

I hate the loss.

Michigan did not deserve to win.

4 years 27 weeks ago Gardner

Devin Gardner is a turnover machine.

Michigan cannot run the ball.

That is all.

4 years 28 weeks ago Knee Braces?

Why do we not put all linemen in steel kneee braces to prevent at least some of these injuries?

300 pound linemen are a natural set-up to put a large amount of abnormal stress on their relatively little knees.  In playing their positions they do not need to pivot as much as a running back or cornerback or quarterback does.  I would think the minor loss of mobility could be compensated and the potential gain from avoiding injuries would be significant.

The public never hears the results of testing in college for PEDs.

As I understand it, while the NCAA tests for PEDs in tournaments, for the most part testing is left up to the individual school.  And I don't know about any testing in high schools.

So when you see a physically huge and dominant team like 2012 Alabama, should'nt the average fan at least think about the possibility that those giants are juicing?

Was it not obvious when we looked at Jim Mandarich, Barry Bonds, Roger Clements, et al?

I say it is obvious when I look at these monstrous athletes who are bigger, faster, stronger.  This is not the result of Sabin being a better coach.  It is not genetics.  It is not demographics.  It is not recruiting.

No doubt a group of people will  find fault with Miles having his quarterback take a knee.

6 years 22 weeks ago Another Telling Quote:

Kovacs:

"But the same time I think our offense helps us out a lot. Anytime you’re not on the field as a defense, they can’t score too many points on you, so I think they do a great job holding the ball and moving the chains. They aren’t doing that hurry-up tempo anymore, so I think that’s really helped us out.”

Kovacs was in a tough situation, and it appears that he made a decision to "threaten" Coulter, hoping Coulter would  pitch the ball, then Kovacs would tackle the running back.  A high-stakes gamble, which he lost, but what the hell...

Q: What was the greatest lesson Bo left you with?BW: Just integrity. When you're with a coach that does the right thing all the time and would never sway away from doing the right thing, you think at that time, that a lot of people are like that, that the world is like that. Then you get away from someone who has been so influential in your life and you realize that it's such a rare breed, that the world is full of liars and cheaters and manipulators. But with my four years at Michigan, I was there with an honorable guy, a good guy, an honest guy, a guy full of integrity, and you miss that in life. I wish there were more people around like that. 7 years 15 weeks ago Well Said!

Perhaps the anti-RR crowd had better insight into RichRod than I had.

I still think he is a good coach, but not a good enough manager.  He did not have good enough assistants.

What makes Jo Pa successful at Penn State?

High-caliber teams require more than just a head coach.

The work load is huge, and must be delegated.  Every coach has to be excellent.

Brandon & Harbaugh need to build a football coaching school in this program.

Just like in business...seek out and hire the best young coaching talent, build a program to teach them how to coach the details, and mold them into the best young coaches in the country.

Then when you lose a coach, you have a replacement on the shelf.

7 years 16 weeks ago Yes

I think DB made the decision when he took his job that he would never change coaches before the end of the bowl games.  This way the teams get to play their bowl games with their present coaches without all the ugliness of the transition.  The mess that happened the last time was ugly for Michigan, West Virginia and LSU.

This is why he says he will not evaluate a team till after its season is over.

If Brandon has decided to make a change, it is already a done deal and will be announced the day after Stanford plays their bowl game.  Short and Sweet.
