But Saban hasn't been there 10 years, so how many SEC titles does each school have since Saban arrived? /toolazytosearch

That's exactly the problem. Don't you know what this board is really for?

I'll be thrilled if we get to the point where there's "mop up" time once again, and UM is leading, of course.
|1 day 6 hours ago||In terms of calendar||
In terms of calendar days/months, the off-season is indeed long. However, there are quite a few things to keep us occupied as UM/NCAA football fans.
-HS All-America games
-Finishing off 2014 recruiting
-Continuing to build the 2015 class
-Possibly adding a 2016 guy or two
And then.....yeah, it'll be a long summer from a football perspective. Grab a cold one and hit the beach, your deck, or whatever else gives you your outdoor fix.
|1 day 6 hours ago||Yeah, not sure how/why I||
Yeah, not sure how/why I managed to screw that up. I also screwed up "cache" vs. "cachet" the other day. I need to execute better.
|1 day 7 hours ago||I saw my first ever live UM||
I saw my first ever live UM football game in 1997, which was a 38-3 annihilation of Baylor. Ahhh, good times.

The route is indeed on!

Not much bouncing of the ball on punts. This weather affects EVERYTHING.
|2 days 3 hours ago||It'll be interesting to see||
It'll be interesting to see if anyone gets away with penalties the refs simply cannot see. Play reviews could be shaky too.
I love this weather. I played in this stuff. Seriously, it was a blast.
|2 days 11 hours ago||Clemson vs. OSU||
You should probably watch that game. Urban needs to make amends with Buckeye fans, so he knows what he must do. He's going to punch a Clemson player in the throat. BOOM, instant OSU legend.
|2 days 18 hours ago||In my own mind, the emphasis||
In my own mind, the emphasis was on "historically", as in, has Ball St. ever really been a powerful program?
Also, notice I mentioned "growing pains". I never said Hoke made them a title contender overnight. It was his first HC gig, and it took him some time to get to a point at which they were competing for the MAC title and had an outside shot at a BCS bowl. But he did it. Then, perhaps he found a system or method, which allowed the quick SDSU turnaround.
Sure, his UM record has gone down each year, and that's cause for concern; but there is also reason for optimism.

|3 days 11 hours ago||The "barely cracked .500" is||
The "barely cracked .500" is equally old. He inherited horrible programs with no real football cache. Assuming he rebuilt Ball St. ethically and without egregious violations, then how hard is it to see that he had quite a task on his hands? Lots of growing pains for a first time HC at an historically downtrodden program.
Next was SDSU, which was the proverbial dumpster fire. In his 2nd year they went 9-4, and kept each loss very close. Within a couple years, they sent at least three guys to the NFL. Not bad for a school that isn't any kind of NFL factory.

I bet Saban wishes he had that kicker. Too bad he totally sucks at recruiting.*
*Probably not an entirely factual statement.

I sure hope not, because I could be facing multiple charges in future cold cases. Ditto for many of my friends.
|6 days 2 hours ago||I can understand the desire||
I can understand the desire to keep him away from Urban (not like he won't find a talented player anyway), but I'm not sure why Rich Rod. As some random person once said, probably on the Internet, "where's the threat?"
|6 days 2 hours ago||Two meme phrases apply here||
"Not sure if serious" and "I see what you did there". So did you really read that, or did you just jump at the chance to do the play on words?
|6 days 2 hours ago||Well, it's still early, and||
Well, it's still early, and maybe he's just not quite #1 on their board. Hence the very subdued Fred Jackson hyperbolic comparison. Or maybe Fred is just slowing down in his old age.
|6 days 5 hours ago||Gentry must be high on UM's||
Gentry must be high on UM's board, because it's obvious they sent Fred Jackson out to see him: "A few college coaches have told Gentry that he reminds them of a more athletic Ryan Mallett with his big frame and strong arm."
|6 days 21 hours ago||In last year's state title||
In last year's state title game against Ishpeming, I expected to see McDowell dominate, but he really didn't do much of anything. He was comically larger than everyone else, but that was really the only way he stood out. I'm not sure what the deal was there, but I didn't get to watch the whole game, either.

ND has been recruiting very well, so they might be able to plug some of those holes without too much of a problem.
Totally with you on Golson. He's a 2nd year starter, coming in after a year off from football, and he plays the most critical position in sports. I like our chances there, especially with our D returning most of its contributors and maybe even adding a few more.
|1 week 10 hours ago||Thanks for posting this.||
Thanks for posting this. Man, so many highs, and one major low, right at the end. I just hope this opened the eyes of the offensive coaching staff to what level of talent is on this roster and how awesome they can be if allowed to go out and play ball.
|1 week 1 day ago||Good points. Those turnovers||
Good points. Those turnovers seemed to make everyone extremely gunshy and may have dictated much of how the offensive plays were called during much of the season. The sad part is that many of us armchair coaches were pining for lots of quick passing to what is a pretty talented group of receivers to open up the running game. Look what happened when the game plan went that route. Dang near beat a very good OSU team.
Many people here were speculating about how The Game 2013 might look a bit like the 2008 Capital One Bowl, when an awesome performance in one big game was juxtaposed against a dismal season, and they were pretty much dead-on....except we lost this one.
|1 week 1 day ago||I'm no insider, but I'll play||
I'm no insider, but I'll play along.
1) Assuming everything has to go through the Head Coach, and the coordinators are extensions of the HC's philosophy/vision for his team, I'd have to say that while Borges was doing what he and Hoke agreed upon in preparation meetings, that agreement was met with an understanding that UM would be a power running team, dammit.
2) I don't think the power football "belief" is likely to be abandoned by Hoke, but I sure hope he sees the benefits of adjusting the schemes and play calls to the personnel until they're ready to do things how he'd like. Taking OSU down to the last play counts as a "benefit" here. We've sure seen the negative consequences of not doing so (Iowa, Nebraska, PSU, etc).
I just hate the thought of the coaches sacrificing potential wins while using games as "practices" to get better for the future. That idea has been tossed around here, and it really doesn't seem all that far-fetched when you look at how this season unfolded. Then again, I suppose you have to fully install your brand of football at some point.
|1 week 1 day ago||I guess I have an optimistic||
I guess I have an optimistic slant to my memory, because outside of his Iowa futility, I tend to think of Funchess as quite reliable. I recall some incredible one-handed catches and little DB's being helpless to stop him. Butt also had a one-hander last week. Can't disagree with Gallon and his reliability, and I don't think you force a pass just because the receiver is tall, but I've just always liked tall dude mismatches in goal line situations. Been that way since I first saw big ol' Dave Jokisch (sp?) get it done back in the 80's.
|1 week 1 day ago||I'd imagine that quite a few||
I'd imagine that quite a few coaches would jump at the chance to take the reins of the offense with this young, talented group of Wolverines. Sure, it may not be a big name guy, but that doesn't mean that he couldn't be successful and end up being a big name guy.
|1 week 1 day ago||I have often wondered if that||
I have often wondered if that is what has gone on with Borges/Hoke this season.
|1 week 2 days ago||Listen, maybe a few in that||
Listen, maybe Funchess dropped a few in that Iowa game, but he didn't have problems like that in this game from what I recall. In fact, he's been pretty damned reliable overall, Iowa notwithstanding.
But even if not Funchess, notice I threw Butt in there as well. I just like to see them find a mismatch and exploit it. That didn't happen, which is my only complaint about that last call.
Also, what makes you think that missing on a pass to Funchess would've resulted in more complaints here? I don't see how you can conclude that. If anything, we'd probably be equally bummed. But at least it would have been a different play from a different formation that had been shown just prior to the time out.
|1 week 2 days ago||And what makes it even worse||
And what makes it even worse is that the play before that, we saw what many of us had been screaming for all season: Funchess getting a quick throw near the corner in single coverage. That play was essentially like throwing an alley-oop to Shaq back in the day - you know it's coming but can't do anything about it. Hell, Funchess even "posted up" against that helpless DB. I would have liked to see that same play again, or else something like it with Jake Butt. Those kids are 6-5 and 6-6, and both are very good receivers....use them in goal line situations!
