I get why they did so, but…

I get why they did so, but I don’t get why that continued well into the second half after giving up multiple big plays.

It didn't appear (to me) that it continued well into the 2nd half (unless "well into" includes M's first possession of the 3rd quarter).

The way I interpret the OSU defensive approach was as follows:

  1. Initial strategy was to prevent M from successfully running the ball - Corum or no. As Klatt put it: M wanted to be a boa constrictor. This strategy worked in stopping M from doing the boa-thing, but single-coverage on the outside with no safety help was costly.
  2. OSU likely didn't expect McCarthy to be as effective as he was with regard to reading and delivering the ball to the right places in cover-0. But, even if he was (as he was), OSU was probably thinking that they (OSU) could win in a shootout if that's how the game played out. Not an unreasonable expectation, no? If that double-A gap blitz gets to McCarthy (rather than the resulting 69 TD to CoJo), the game outcome might have been quite a bit different than it was.
  3. After the TD pass to Loveland makes the score 24-20 in 3rd quarter, it appeared the OSU defensive approach changed. As a result M goes to a mixed run-pass approach on the long (yards + clock) drive which takes up the remainder of the 3rd quarter, and into the 4th quarter. Resulting McCarthy TD run makes the score 31-20.
  4. Sainristil PBU in end-zone on OSU's ensuing drive keeps the margin at 8 points midway through Q4. As you point out, this was huge. A 4-point margin is fundamentally different than an 8-point margin at this point in the game with regard to OSU defensive strategy for the remainder of the game.
  5. OSU defense reverts to the "load the box with cover-0" on ensuing M drive. Presumably because OSU desperately wanted to prevent another long/time-consuming drive - understandable but risky. Basically three-and-out or bust. It was bust - Edwards 75-yard TD run. M was presumably not going to run high-risk passing plays at that point in the game unless absolutely necessary.
  6. Same deal with next M drive. Edwards 86-yard TD run.

Though, since he pulled out the old Yakov Smirnoff "In Soviet Russia..." bit for the headline, he could have gone with...

or...

"In Soviet Russia, safety seeks you. And leaves you in heap on ground longing for days when Comrade Brown was Minister of Defense.  New minister much trickier - though Comrade Brown scores big points for mustache like Stalin."

I - for one - will probably…

I - for one - will probably not be wearing blue pants for the Nebraska game.

In fact, since it's a late start, I may well be wearing pajama pants (plaid flannel w/ reds, oranges, forest green). If not pajama pants, it'll likely be medium brown cargo shorts.

But, we'll see. It'll be a game-time decision.

EDIT: Another possible scenario would be to start the game in the cargo shorts, and, after half-time adjustments, come out for the 2nd half in the plaid pajama pants. This would be particularly likely if, during the 1st half, the Cornhuskers identified vulnerabilities in the cargo shorts that they were successfully exploiting.

Regarding the current…

Regarding the current thinking that Dax plays mostly at nickel, what does that mean for the front six/seven in the base set?

Is the base D...

  • A 5/1/5 (with only one of Ross or Hill-Green on the field)?
  • Or a 4/2/5 with Hutchinson playing more as a down lineman, only two of Mazi/Jeter/Hinton on the field, and Ojabo as the lone edge specialist?
  • Or still a 5/2/4 with Dax nominally a safety, but with more freedom to morph into a 3rd corner and Hawkins playing center field?
  • Or still a 5/2/4 with Green and Dax as the "starting" corners and Turner + Gray used situationally?
  • Or something else?

And where is Lilly? And Flo? And Limu the Emu? And Jake from State Farm? And the little anthropomorphic Cologard box guy? It was practically the dark ages back in 1993!

Seriously, though, it’s kinda shocking/disturbing how profitable cell phone network providers and insurance companies and pharma have become over the past few decades that they can spend so much $ on saturation ad buys during major sporting event broadcasts.

Ummm, ok whatever, but it's…

Ummm, ok whatever, but it's basketball season, shouldn't they be opining on Five Warriors? Or Five Cagers? Or some such appropriately-named OSU forum?

And, in fairness to WAS,…

And, in fairness to WAS, this was Wizards-light (very light). No John Wall (out all year - healing from an achilles tear), no Bradley Beal (sore shoulder - opted out of bubble play), no Davis Bertans (opted out of bubble play). The bubble play for WAS was mostly about getting the young guys (Hachimura, Troy Brown, Thomas Bryant in particular) more NBA time. I've watched a few of their bubble games - Moe has been "unimpressive" as a whole.

I've been a resident of the Charlottesville/Albemarle region for 20+ years, and I agree with pretty much the entire Charlottesville29 best-of list (link below). It includes several that have been mentioned by other posters in this thread.

Short version of each CS,B …

Short version of each CS,B ...

Ashe - ate lunch one table over from him at the Michigan Union restaurant (back when there was just one). We exchanged greetings.

Woolfolk - played pickup basketball with him @ CCRB. Spoiler alert: he's very fast.

A.C. - lived a few doors down from him on 47** hall in South Quad. Freshman year (for both of us), he used the phone in our room for making multiple long distance calls home to Florida before my roommates and I moved in (presumably during [his] fall camp). We found out when the first Michigan Bell bill arrived and there were lots of charges for calls to Rivera Beach, FL.

Paul Girgash - also lived a couple of doors down on 47** hall. He was the football player with whom I socialized most. Sweet guy (off the field). Though, there was this one incident with Paul and my roommate where one of them was able to successfully tear a phonebook in half and one was not. Paul was somewhat annoyed.

Abdul-Jabbar - crossed paths with him in the parking lot of Crisler Arena. We did not exchange greetings since he was walking about 10 yards in front of me and we were both heading to the basketball game (M vs. MSU). Learned later that Lakers were in MI for a Pistons game and Magic Johnson took some of the team to AA to see his Spartans play.

Springsteen - my friends (visiting me in Ann Arbor from home for the weekend) got to meet him (and take photos with him) in the parking lot of Crisler Arena. They were there when his tour buses pulled up for the load-out. I, unfortunately, missed all this because I was dutifully spending the afternoon in organic chemistry lab.

Yep, I'm brimming with "cool…

Yep, I'm brimming with "cool stories, bro" from my years in AA: Arthur Ashe, Butch Woolfolk, Anthony Carter, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Paul Girgash, Bruce Springsteen, ...

I lived in South Quad at the…

I lived in South Quad at the same time as Bubba and Ed. And, I recall the first time I walked into South Quad arriving for my freshman year - having flown into Detroit Metro, taken a bus to AA (Michigan Union), dragging my suitcase and foot locker down State Street to the East side entrance of South Quad - as I'm walking in the door, Bubba was walking out. He was a mountain. I was looking down to make sure my luggage was OK, and I turned to see this large person in front of me - and having to tilt my head further and further upward to finally see the face of this mountain.

And, yet again, Coach…

And, yet again, Coach Dantonio is misunderstood and mischaracterized as some sort of lying, cheating, sub-human grinch to be mocked mercilessly.

If the reporter had asked the obvious follow-up question, he would have learned that Coach was not using the acronym "B.S." in the common, crass usage. But, rather, he was using the less common, erudite "B.S." acronym usage - "Brilliant Sleuthing". With which he was clearly referring to the stellar work of investigators who obtained info from eye-witnesses to the pre-game incident and who analyzed the relevant video. And, thus, Coach Dantonio was absolutely correct, it was indeed B.S. (brilliant sleuthing).

Hmmm, interesting. I wonder…

Hmmm, interesting. I wonder why Galloway is in a bad mood this morning? I cannot think of any particular reason why he would be? Can anyone else?

No Tom Mack?? From bench-sitter to HOF'er as a result of position switch (which is probably an over-simplification, but it makes good reading)...

Mack enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1962 and played college football for Michigan Wolverines football teams from 1963 to 1965.[4] As a sophomore in 1963, he played at the end position and spent most of the season on the bench.[4][5] After the 1963 season, Mack switched to the tackle position at the suggestion of Michigan coach Bump Elliott. Mack later referred to the position change as "the big break of my life," an opportunity that "turned my whole experience in terms of football around."[5]

As a junior, he started seven games at right tackle and won the Meyer Morton Award for the 1964 Michigan Wolverines football team that compiled a 9-1 record, outscored opponents 235-83, and defeated Oregon State in the 1965 Rose Bowl.[6] As a senior, he started seven games at right tackle for the 1965 Michigan team,[7] and he was selected by the Associated Press as a first-team tackle on the 1964 All-Big Ten Conference football team.[8] Mack was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 2006.[9]

Semi-OT/irrelevant (except…

Semi-OT/irrelevant (except for those of us who will be doing an audio broadcast using Zach's surname at some point in the near future):

Do we know how he (Zach) pronounces his surname?

First syllable as hard 'Ch' - as in Charcoal? Or soft 'Ch' as in Chardonnay?

And...

last syllable as in 'net'flix? Or as in 'nay'sayer?

In my head I'm pronouncing it as soft 'Ch' and 'nay'. But, would kinda like to know what is "correct" (i.e., how he pronounces it).

And, later, Charles Woodson posted this one ...

If I were Mo, I'd leverage

If I were Mo, I'd leverage this situation into having TB pay for Rafterry's new pair of specs. "Wasn't that you, Tom, who ran into him during the game tonight? It's so confusing"

But shouldn't he be wearing

But shouldn't he be wearing #10? And isn't that MAAR's number?

Despicable Me

It's certainly a possibility that the staff needs to plan for. If Gru or Vector were to show up at the training facility with the shrink ray, who knows what havoc or mayhem could ensue?

Another one ...The Nobody

Another one ...

The Nobody puts Baby in the O'Korn-ers: the segment of the M fan base who are fans of both John O'Korn and Patrick Swayze.

Unicorns/UnO'Korns

On a marginally related topic, what's the consensus on the question of whether Unicorns can fly or are strictly terrestrial?

And, in case you were

And, in case you were wondering, I consider myself to be a full-on UnO'Kornian.

O'Kornucopians

O'Kornucopians: a sect of M fans who believe that - in a world in which John O'Korn is M's starting QB - their lives will be overflowing with fruit and vegetables, and, most importantly, victories.

O'Kornutopians: a sect of M fans who believe that - in a world in which John O'Korn is M's starting QB - their lives (and, most importantly, M's offense) will be truly ideal.

UnO'Kornians: a sect of M fans who believe that John O'Korn is a mythical, flying horse-like being with a single, sparkly horn growing from the middle of his forehead and a rainbow-like mane & tail. As such, they believe him to have magical abilities including the ability to render poison water potable and the ability to heal sickness.

Note that there is a rather large overlap between those who self-identify as O'Kornucopians and those who self-identify as O'Kornutopians. Those who despise fruits and vegetables (particularly winter squash) typically self-identify as O'Kornutopians only.

UnO'Kornians, however, are a singular and - not surprisingly - rather fringe group.

I'm envisioning something

I'm envisioning something very similar to this ...

No, not at all. Purely a

No, not at all. Purely a platonic, family-values, business type of relationship.

Someone to walk in the recruit's home along side Coach Freeze - smiling an SEC smile, wearing a modest dress (in Ole Miss blue and/or crimson), and say very little other than. "How lovely to meet y'all" and "I'd love to get your recipe for hush puppies".

But, surely, they weren't

But, surely, they weren't *that* kind of escort.

They were more like a surrogate spouse - just standing in for Hugh's wife (who couldn't join him on the recruiting trips, because, well, clearly someone had to stay home with the family) so that Hugh could project a good, wholesome, SEC family image when visiting recruits.

That must be the explanation, right? RIGHT? Hugh, please tell me I'm RIGHT!!

'Most improved' relative to

'Most improved' relative to what?

To last year's OL play? Or to this year's OL line play at the start of camp?

Catches like those do make

Catches like those do make great throws ....

You've got to pick a pocket or twoooooo.

My male dog does that too.

My male dog does that too. Though, it's a different sort of "delivery".

Petit-Frere?

Petit-Frere = Little Brother. Is State recruiting him too? It would seem a natural fit.

I've not seen his film, but

I've not seen his film, but I've heard he compares favorably with Marie Curie.

It's most probably of no

It's most probably of no consequence to anyone who may be reading his profile, but, just FYI, the name of his hometown is Silver Spring (without a trailing 's'), Maryland.

According to the PennLive

According to the PennLive article, the defense team

...worked to show the jury that Spanier, whose information on Sandusky came from former Athletic Director Tim Curley and former senior vice president Gary Schultz, never understood that what McQueary saw was sexual or possibly criminal in nature.

Even if that is (mostly) true, one would have hoped (expected) that he would have erred on the side of being overly protective of possible (and future possible) victims. As to the criminality (or lack thereof) of his non-actions, well, it seems that is now a matter of record per this jury.

Also, it seems far-fetched that his only knowledge of the situation would be from the McQueary incident. I suppose his defense could argue that, yes, there was institutional knowledge of other incidents, but none of it reached Spanier. Again, seems far-fetched.
If I were an NBA draft-nik,

If I were an NBA draft-nik, I'd pick Wilson over Wagner if they were both available this year. DJ seems to have quicker feet on the defensive end, he seems to time his shot block attempts better and, while his offensive game is different the Wagner's, it is still quality. I could see DJ being a guy you put on Durant, or Karl-Anthony Towns, or Anthony Davis, or Kawhi Leonard, or Giannis Antetokounmpo, or Carmelo Anthony (or even put him a long 2 like Harden or Derozan or Butler) as an effective defensive stopper in a few years. I don't see that with Wagner.

I'm not saying the Wagner isn't going to be a quality NBA guy, I just see more options with Wilson at present.

It's actually only 7-0:

It's actually only 7-0: Nebraska, Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, and Louisville. But, Oregon or Rhode Island will, indeed, make it 8-0.

But, why stop there. Why not 11-0?

But, now we do (or soon will)

But, now we do (or soon will) know "the facts" as detailed in the signed plea agreements. And we'll know "the facts" from whatever testimony these two will - presumably - soon provide in the Spanier trial.

Thus, that tired, heads-in-the-sand(usky) refrain will no longer be acceptable (not that it was truly acceptable at any time to anyone who looked at things objectively).

With regard to the "witch hunt" criticism, if it was a witch hunt, it seems they've found a few true witches in the administration at PSU, wouldn't you say?

It *must* be just a

It *must* be just a misunderstanding and/or simply taken out-of-context.

Clearly, what he was *actually* saying was:

"NFL Players should be allowed and encouraged to go to court and fight the League and Commissioner Goodell in order to break the Commissioner's broad and un-checked powers."

Yes?

Nor the host for NBC's

And regardless of the host for NBC's coverage.

Unless .....

  • Ice Swimming - where athletes must swim through surface ice of varying thickness with the option of attaching a mini ice-breaker device to the top of their caps.
  • Ice Gymnastics - which is identical to the gymnastics events of the Summer Games but with that added twist that all aperatuses (as well as the floor surface for the floor routines) are covered with a thin sheet of ice.

I'd watch that.

Jim McKay

As an older person (DOB: 1961), Jim McKay will always be the voice/face of the Olympic Games to me: Sapporo '72, Munich '72, Innsbruck '76, Montreal '76 are the most memorable ones for me.

Having said that, I do really like Mike Tirico as a sportscaster & sports journalist, and I expect he'll be great as the new anchor for NBC's Olympic Games coverage.

OK, I suppose I'm glad  that

After reading the thread title my thoughts were ...

OK, I suppose I'm glad  that he's getting some positive attention for this. I'm sure it's helping his overall self-confidence and self-esteem.

But, IMHO, it's not all *that* noteworthy. Sheesh, I've bowled many games of 92 (and better!!) over the years.

Sounds legit. As we all

Sounds legit.

As we all know:

  1. Recruits behave as both waves and particles simultaneously.
  2. The mere act of measuring a recruit's position and/or velocity results in a change in that recruit's position and/or velocity.
  3. Heisenberg's 'croot.
Perhaps Zingerman's?

I can envision the copy for a jar of "Tuscaloosa Jive" in the Zingerman's catalog ....

"We thought all jive was the same until our staff brought back a jar of freshly ground jive from a small family-run farm just outside of Tuscaloosa Alabama. There must be something special in the silt from the Black Warrior River that gets deposited in those farm fields because - when Ari first sprinkled some of this jive on a mac ' cheese caserole here in the Zingerman's kitchen - it really opened his eyes to the magic that this spice can add to most any meal. Try a jar, you'll find out what all the fuss and jive is about."
