I think gholston is a very good,

probably a second team all-conference player. However, I'm not seeing the top 10 pick people(a lot of which are michigan fans) are refering to. He looks very, very stout in the run game, and he's hard to move.

But I'm not seeing the explosion in the pass rush though. And that's a requirement to be such a high pick. Reminds me a lot of Nick Perry. Where you're just searching for that explosion and not finding it anywhere. A lot of their sacks come from high motor plays (which is fine but it also doesn't make you a top ten pick). And if you watch the Taylor vs. Gholston tape, you are seeing where that lack of explosion against an nfl-cabiler left tackle is so tough to overcome.

But wilkins is different

than the other backs we have committed. Sure he may be a big back but he also is much more explosive and agile than the other two. Not trying to rip on the other two, but Wilkins does bring a different skill set to the table. Not all big backs come in the same package.

Yea need is a probably too strong.

But like you said adding some explosion to the running back is probably what we are looking for.

You're not a huge fan of green, magnus?

1.I'm probably in the minority

here, but I do feel we need another running back. Smith looks pretty solid himself however I  believe we need that explosive game-changing running back (and keep in mind I'm talking in the context of a team with a realistic shot at winning a national championship). Both the 2012 and 2013 defensive classes look very very good so I'm completely ok giving another slot to offense.

2. I'm not sure if Green or Wilkins is our next option. Green's measurables are very impressive and so is his offer sheet although I wasn't as impressed with his film as I thought I would.

3. Yea, what neoavtara said.

4. I just watched his highlights (albiet a quick 3 minutes), and was very impressed. Looks like a fairly big back with really good agility. Reminded me a little bit of Ronnie Brown at Auburn.

after reading that article

it will hurt even more if we lose him. Sounds like a real intelligent kid and certainly appears to be doing his homework on his decision.

Well I think

you sorta answered your own question as far as Hardaway at the 2 goes. To be a slasher you're gonna need a dribble-drive and man just not Tim's game.

I sure there are people who know the specifics of Beilin's more than I do. Dylan at umhoops is pretty convinced that Tim won't be able to play the 2 next season but we'll see.

I'm just not seeing

Tim Hardaway Jr. at the 2. I don't see his dribbling as solid enough. And I know that John Bielin's runs his offenes through the 3 a lot (although to be fair Burke made that different this year).

I'm thinking the lineup looks like:

PG-Burke/Brundidge

SG-Vogrich or Stauskus/loser between that battle (I know everybody is automatically going to assume Stauskus would win that battle but I'm not so sure. Vogrich's defense has gotten better every year and he may be able to provide some leadership.)

SF-Hardaway/Robinson

PF-Smot/McGary Maybe even Robinson gets some minutes at the 4

C-McGary/Morgan/Horford

I know that you would probably like to find a way to get some more minutes from Robinson if he is as good as I think he is, but this is a lineup where you don't need to manipulate anyone into another position (ie Hardaway to two).

There is a few things you have to like about next year's lineup whatever it is. The obvious being the added athleticism from the freshman. But you also have a lot of players with potential for growth. Hardaway could add some consistently, Smot could establish his shooting touch throughout the entire season. Brundidge who I thought had a lot of talent coming in could took a step foward. And I also don't see a way where we don't have less depth.

I think bottom line for next season is that there are a lot of things that can happen to make us a better team. Of course not of all them will, but it's hard to see a way where we won't be a better team despite the loss of leadership.

Maybe analysts will STFU about

us not winning on the road and stop using their sample size of 4 games to extrapolate this over the entire season.

Congrats to Drew Brees.

Extremely classy guy, and I'm happy for him.

However, I do think this shows how increbible that 84 season was for Marino. Brees had to throw about 55 more times with rules much more advantegous to the passing game to break the record. If you really stop to think it about, it only makes that 84 season that much more impressive.

what an end to the half...

just turned a blowout into a tie game with a dangerous team. That was a really bad last 6 or 7 minutes.

that was a fantastic

should have been assist from burke...gotta finish there morgan

yea doing some

self-marketing on the bench, ass hole. Gotta a problem?

yea doing some

self-marking on the bench, ass hole. Gotta a problem?

Give Zack Novak some

credit for developing that mid-range jumper this year. Not only is he very efficient with it, it also gives me some room on the perimeter. Really has made himself a much better offensive player this year. Gonna miss him next year.

Out of our control...

We just got our best win since 2006 penn state, and have a legitimate shot at a bcs bowl in a season which few would have predicted it. Enjoy it.

If USC wins tonight how much does

that increase how bcs's chances?

I agree with one of the above posters: I'm not so sure Luck is better than Barkley. And that's not meant as a knock on Luck.

I do what i can...

In all seriousness, this blog really is the shit. Brain and ace do a great job. And of course, many great contributions from the users.

I go to the wolverine quite often. Although it has some good stuff too, the forum here is much more conservational and has better content than theirs.

Related question: Can the game be moved

to 3:30 this late?

Refs in Msu game are starting to piss me

off...that holding on gholston was really weak  and so was the one on the big kick return

Yep...good point

Next year may be esp. frustating because we may very well be a better team with a worse record.

This isn't an excuse for this coaching staff but really I'm not going to be too upset with them their first two season. I mean what 95% of the guys playing out there today were Richrod's players. It's kinda of hard to judge a staff without at least seeing their first class as juniors.

And the playcalling isn't what is holding this offense back. People talk all this crap about how we were a top 10 offense last year. What happened we played osu, wisconsin, or msu? Yeah that's not a top 10 offense. We have an offensive line that opens up little to no holes against quality opponents. We have two quarterbacks who don't read the field very well, and one who struggles with any throw over 20 yards. And on top of all that we have slot ninjas playing outside.

well that was slightly

disappointing...

I'm a little bit surprised

Morgan didn't score higher. I thought he really turned a corner last week. I guess it's the coverage that is holding him back. That being said I really think he has a bright future.

I think the same can be said for quite a few other defensive freshmen (countless, clark, beyer, taylor). Although we don't want to see that many freshman playing, it is nice to see them stepping up to the plate, and also makes the future of this defense look very promising.

I had mixed feelings about Frank Clark.

It seemed like everytime (which seemed like a lot) he got to the quarterback, he couldn't finish the sack. The one rollout (I think it was a third down around midfield in the 4th quarter) he really got juked out bad by the purdue quarterback. And it's not like the guy he was playing Denard Robinson or Jarrod Wilson. Just needs to finish.

Desmond Morgan was the one who I thought turned a corner. He really looked like he belonged out there. Even made a real nice hit on special teams too. Me and my buddy have kept saying how he might be something special in two years. After today, I think it might be earlier than expected.

Our star defensive

lineman who is supposed to be a 2nd round pick is playing like that against THAT offensive line. That's unacceptable. I liked Martin's press conference after saying he knows that this isn't the type of team that will crumble like we have of recently, but after looking at his performance it's pretty clear that it all starts with him. If we have one of our few proven stars on this team playing like that, then we may very well be on our way to another 7-5 or 8-4 season. I may be negged for this post, but the only reason I complain is because I truly expect much more from him.

Our defense didn't lose this game, but giving up 150+ to Baker is a big concern of mine.

Although your probably

right, I don't see how anyone could argue that the next twist should at least be a three-game suspension. The risk of injury on that play is so high. And the big thing to me is it wasn't in the heat of moment. That really makes you wonder why isn't this going to occur again. Personal fouls that are during fights or during plays are if not understandable, at least explainable. This one was not even close to such cases.

I was at the game as

well, and like yourself didn't see the play till just now. This isn't even about the game anymore. It's not complaining, this is a legitimate concern about the safety of the players. WIlliam Gholston should be suspensed for the rest of the season. It wasn't that the play was dirty. The play was balant. And it wasn't like he was in the heat of the moment in a fight with an opposing player. After the whistle with an offensive player lying on the ground. Considering the circumstances, one of the dirtiest play I will ever see.

Because I'm sure there

are no fans that actually believe the patriots will make the super bowl this year...

What makes you think the patriots will

get there, let alone the lions? We're talking about a team that has won zero playoffs games the past two season after good regular seasons. They have got flat out dominated in those two games. That ravens game two years may have be one of the most dominating performances I've seen in a while. It's pretty clear that Brady hides so many flaws of that team. When they play more talented like the Jets or Ravens in the postseason, the team has gotten exposed.

I know somebody will bring up the super bowls they won nearly a decade ago to counter what I said. Which has no relevence on the team they bring to the postseaon now.

When you say a good one Tom

do you mean a wideout or just a commit in general?

I would wait to see what happens in free agency

with the lions. As much as hype as they are receiving, they are very few teams that could win a division with that back seven. Their biggest weakness from last season hasn't been addressed, and addressing that within the next two weeks would really increase my confidence on the lions.

What's up with Thompson's 5.27?

I'll agree that 40 times are overvalued, but that's a really, really bad time. Was he injured going into the camp or something like that?

exactly nicely

put. Would give this post a +1, but for someone reason I can't right now.

Then don't click

on the thread. There are some of here who actually are curious about state's class. It doesn't make us obsessed like some claim. I'm interested in all our rivals' classes and don't see why we should have to wait till tim's rankings come out. It's not like the title gives an inaccurate description either.

oh well

that's a good get for them. Even though we slowed down on him, it still stings a bit. But then again we do have four solid de commitments (although my gut tells me Godin will play DT).

Yea. I like the kid a lot

Very classy. But I always root for Americans in majors, and esp. now that's it been so long since an american has won. The real key will be if someone can get to 5 or 6 under today (maybe Bubba) to put some pressure on rory.

You have to be shitting

me. How many chances does he need? The sad thing is that he seems like a nice enough kid, and a pretty good player. Just can't make that many bad decisions in such a short time period. It sucks cause he was one of the few wide outs who's proven he can play outside, but doesn't matter now.

Why is the op getting negged?

He didn't say getting commits this early was a bad thing. He clearly stated the advantages and drawbacks. I think he brings up very valid points. I think we can all agree that getting a four-star at any time is a good thing. So lets breakdown the three-stars.

Pharaoh Brown ( I agree more with Scout's three-star assessment not rivals)- the kid is extremely raw, but any recruit that athletic you can't ignore. Looks like he has the frame to put on some weight, and again he isn't even considered a three-star on rivals.

Kaleb Ringer (I agree with rival's three-star assessment)- looks to be very ready for the college game. Has glaring strengths (hits hard, good insticts) but also glaring weaknesses (stiff hiped, little slow). Not a huge upside, but also has a high ceiling. In other words, you know what you are getting.

Matt Godin- see Kaleb Ringer. Glaring strengths and glaring weaknesses. You know what you are getting. These are the type of recruits that schools like Wisconsin and Iowa strive on.

AJ williams- I don't really know why we are high on him. Seems like a tweener that is a project at whichever position he ends up. (Maybe staff was looking for an almost-strictly blocking te like webb)

Ben Braden & Caleb Stacey-  We are taking 6 or 5 OL this class. It's just not realistic to expect us to have 5 four-stars at one position. So I have no problem taking 2 three-stars OL to start filling out the position early.

Dont act like you know

the kid because you dont. Yes him falling indicates that there is probably confirmed drug use. But until it goes public I wont pass judgement. And dont try to say he has a poor work ethic because his teammates, and coaches have all denied that many times. If you watched the Jon Gruden camp it wasnt hard to tell the kid does his homework. Best on the chalkboard by far. Passing judgements on hearsay is naive imho.

Its probably Mallett

Locker has huge accuracy issues.

Colin Kapernick has an extremely long release.

Ponder has questionable arm strenght with injury issues.

Newton is coming from the simplest offense, and many are concerned with his work ethic.

Mallett biggest problem is that he has lead feet in the pocket (not to the extent people believe), and he can force the issue under pressure. The fact that such a talented qb is still on the board shows  that there is probably confirmed drug use.

Slightly off-topic I know

but this seemed like a good thread to ask, have we heard anything on Pike since we found out he is announcing on Weds? He'd be a tough one to lose.

19 as well

Most of my friends don't like him either. The ones who do at least recongize that his recent stuff has been trash. I have never been into rap though. I like Eminem and Jay-z's old stuff, Cudi's first album, some of Lupe's stuff, and that's about it.

I have never and will never

appreciate his generic stuff. As for the mixtapes, probably not for me but I'll see.

I thought I was the only

one thinking it. Mainstream hiphop (and pretty much all genres) is so garbage now. Eminem's new stuff, anything with B.O.B, lil wayne... it all sucks.

I doesnt understand why

people are complaining about these changes. With as many advantages as the offense has received, its about time the rules helped out the defense. This keeps the game safer, gives a much deserved advantage to the defense, and makes the job of a kicker strictly about the field goals now.

Wow I didnt

know that people were so down on Douglass and Novak. I can see where some of you coming from, but it isn't as simple as this guy is more athletic than that guy so start him. Not only are Stu and Douglass going into their fourth year starting, but they are guys that fit the system.

If being athletic was that important in this offense, then logic would say last year's team would have been much better. I too would like us to go a bit bigger, but that's not this offense. I think the best scanerio for us next year with so many guys that can play  would get to the point where we can have a small ball lineup (ie this years lineup) and then also have a more protypical big ten lineup (ie Smot and Morgan manning down the 4 and 5).

Say what you want about Douglass, Novak will starting. I think the team chemistry is being underrated a bit. This year's lineup (and Smot near the end of season) proved they know how to make each other better, and not sure you want to mess with that. Maybe gradually sprinkle in new contributors (hopefully) like Brundide and Horford as the season goes on.

I think its

cool when people neg other people just because they disagree...

Not much here.

Looks like fitz t. had a nice run, but hard to tell when they are virtually playing two hand touch for now.

Wow predicting

a double digit loss, and to go as far as to say that Tenn. and Duke are happy that they might play us. I consider that taking a shot at us. I also think other people are overblowing the 8 seed being way too high for us. Honestly look at our record against the teams in the tourney below us. We were 7-1 against MSU, PSU, Ill., Clemson, and Oakland with four of those games being a neutral or away game. We deserved to be ranked above of those teams.

On a side note, it kinda makes me happy that Lunardi shit the bed in predicting the bracket this year. Makes him lose a lot of credibility moving foward.
