I get what you're saying, but won't opposing defenses also try to set the offense up for failure? They will not take it any easier on them than they did in the scrimmage.
Unless you're talking about tipping plays to the defense in order to put more pressure on the offensive guys.

We have a bunch of freshmen and sophomores starting on the line, is what's happening.

"My theory: losing Braxton (even though he is Heisman-worthy) will benefit all of the surrounding offensive tools that this team has available, and therefore make this team better because we aren't relying on one man to make all of the plays. Braxton could have set all sorts of records this year, but now JT & Co. will spread the wealth; and we might see a whole bunch of studs emerge from this injury. Here's to a speedy recovery for Braxton."
That's... Very wishful thinking.

They may have worked out the kinks by then, but any way you slice it, this OSU team will not be the same one we would have faced otherwise. Even if their backup is pretty good, you don't just replace a Heisman frontrunner.
Not to mention, their whole team besides the defensive line is basically one big question mark. This could be a lean year for them, for OSU standards.

Well that was the 2007 defense, but I agree completely.

What grace does he have to fall from? I honestly don't get ESPNs obsession with him. He was a good qb in college, but not spectacular in my opinion and not the type that would excel in the NFL.
|1 day 4 hours ago||Their defense still has major||
Their defense still has major issues/questions in the secondary, and lost their best LB by far. And they have a similar situation on the OL as us, and return virtually zero of their production on offense if Braxton is out.
I'm not saying that their offense will be a tire fire, but it could look pretty ugly for a while. I do think they will be OK, but I doubt very much that they make it to the conference championship game without Braxton.

You know what's funny? Michigan has won a BCS bowl (or any bowl) more recently than OSU.
This has nothing to do with Braxton, but I just thought of it.

We get very little respect because that's what we deserve right now. I do think that those who haven't been paying close attention to Michigan probably will dismiss them again this year, though.

MSUs offensive line was absolutely terrible until about week 6 or 7 last year. If we come out of the gate looking bad (which seems like a near certainty at this point), there is still a nonzero chance that the line improves drastically throughout the year, much like MSU did last year.
That, and we are basing our assumptions on very limited sample sizes. Hoke has mentioned that the line had been performing better than we saw in the scrimmage.

I'm hoping that the jerseys and pants they wear for the game match the maize on the helmet.

I don't think that phrase means what you think it means.
Either way, you could certainly argue that Borges was bad at his job, given the results of his offenses. My point is that even though he was "bad" at his job, he still is a professional and has forgotten more about offensive strategy/game planning than most on here know. We do not know the coaches' reasoning for using 2 TE sets for sure, but my guess is that they could sit down and explain it to you and have you completely convinced it is a good idea.
Perhaps they want to set up situations where Funchess being lined up in a 2 TE set forces a linebacker to cover him rather than a corner/safety. By the way, are you really trying to argue that Nussmeier is bad at his job?

Because nobody knows scheming and the talent on the field better than you, amirite?
These people are not bad at their jobs. They see 100 times more of the team than we do.

Pessimism is the status quo around here nowdays. I agree with you, and even if the 2014 offensive line is no better than last year's offensive line (which I think it WILL be better, based on improved players in the interior and a better offensive scheme), this TEAM will be better than 2013. The team will have a greatly improved defense, a senior Devin Gadner, some talented skill players. These things alone would have won Michigan 2-3 more games last season at least.
2014's schedule is a bit tougher, but so is this team. I have a good feeling about this year, and a VERY good feeling about next year, and the forseeable future.
Hoke has quietly (maybe not so quietly, but it goes forgotten around here a lot) built one of the most talented, deep teams in the Big Ten. Once the line issues are sorted out, which they will be, this team doesn't really have anything that it can't do going forward.

Hoke is in no danger of being let go after this season. It would be a stupid move on Dave Brandon's part which would ruin a potentially huge season in 2015.
|3 days 1 min ago||This is why I am feeling good||
This is why I am feeling good about this year. Even the terrible offensive line from last year got us close to beating PSU, Nebraska, OSU, and Iowa. We will probably be better than last year in most, if not all areas.

I can't speak for him, but I didn't see it as a knock. Gallon was just a small, quick guy, which is the type of player we don't really seem to recruit anymore..
|4 days 23 hours ago||I think people who have been||
I think people who have been following both programs closely knew that Michigan should not be heavy underdogs going in. In recent years we have outplayed them. Even in 2012, we outgained them by a wide margin and gave them the game with turnovers.
This year's rendition of ND didn't look extremely daunting, even before the suspensions.

Why would you put your upper limit at three years, was more the point of my post. Which I thought I made fairly clear, by capitalizing "three." Learn to reading comprehension, yourself.
|5 days 19 min ago||Perhaps it is crude, but I||
Perhaps it is crude, but I challenge you to show that a line can perform at a high level when one or two players on it are below average players.
My point is that the interior of the line was not good for various reasons, but we have reason to believe it will improve. The tackles are obviously new, but if they can perform decently (which isn't out of the question in my opinion), we may actually be OK on the offensive line.
|5 days 26 min ago||Kalis would be starting,||
Kalis would be starting, Green is performing well, Cole actually sounds like a pretty good player, and not just the best of a bunch of bad options.
It seems that a lit of the general freaking out around here has been for nothing.
|5 days 4 hours ago||The line is only as good as||
The line is only as good as its weakest member. The weakest part of the line was the interior last year, which is almost certain to improve this year, perhaps drastically. I see no reason to say that the line will definitively not improve over last year.
|5 days 4 hours ago||I was going to mention this||
I was going to mention this as well. The helmets seem to be more of the old school maize, which would also corroborate Brian's observations about the pants looking darker. I'm kind of excited for a return to real maize vs the highlighter color or recent years.
|5 days 15 hours ago||Between one and THREE years||
Between one and THREE years before we can feel good about taking on MSU and OSU? Man, a lot can change in three years. Hell, a lot can change in one year. MSU had a terrible offensive line all through 2012, and for the first half of 2013. They really improved down the stretch, and while they weren't on say, Alabama's level, they were certainly respectable, even one of the better lines in the Big Ten. I think something similar can happen to this team.
But anyway, three years from now, 75% of our roster will have exhausted their eligibility. I don't think three years is a good time frame for predicting anything in college football, unless you are building from scratch, which we are most certainly not. We have a slightly young, but deep roster in pretty much every position on the field, and by next year, the roster will be a talent-laden, upper classmen-filled roster. If our line even looks middling this year, next year could be a big, big year for Michigan football, with what should be one of the deepest, most talented rosters in Michigan history.
