Cool. Obviously it really helped the team's performance.

Well, they've won 10 or more games in 3 of the past 4 years. Anyone care to look up how often Michigan has done that?

I think they will be pretty good as well, but I don't think it's out of the question that their defense takes a significant step back (i.e. being only top 20, rather than top 3). Their offense seems to have hit its stride, so they will have an above average unit on both sides of the ball. They will be a 9+ win team.

Our linebackers have played very well this year, if you've been paying attention to Brian's UFRs. While UFRs not the be-all, end-all when it comes to evaluation, they carry more weight than what some radio hacks say about our linebackers based on observations from one game against one of the top offenses in the nation.
EDIT: Ok, fine, Marcus Ray and Andy Mignery are not hacks, but my point still stands. The general consensus is that our linebackers are probably the strongest unit on our defense.

Which makes the loss all the more frustrating. Ending their 23-0 run and being 1-1 vs Meyer would have been oh so sweet.

About the ND game. In recent years it hasn't seemed like an overly tough road environment. In 2010 we pulled out the win and should have won in 2012. Not sure about who they lose/return, but my impression is that it will be your standard 8-4/9-3 type ND squad.
It remains to be seen how well MSU can recover drom losing almost everyone on D. If Narduzzi leaves it will put another huge dent in that D. I think we can pull out the win if our offense finds some identity (maybe a big if).
NW and Rutgers are gimmes. OSU will be undoubtedly tough but they will probably regress a little after losing their entire offensive line (after all, tjat happens to everyone, not just us, right? Right??) Either way it will be a close game.
I'm thinking 3-2 or 4-1 if things roll our way.

I really doubt that OSU schemed conservatively on defense at all, much less after we were up 21-14. While the msu game was an embarrassment, this game was pretty indicative of how Borges wants to run the offense. I'm not sure why the offensive line seemed to play much better this game than any since ND, maybe chalk it up to the rivalry, but the play calling and execution in this game was where you expect it to be. At this point, I'm not sure canning Borges is the answer so much as riding out the storm that is this offensive line.

Did Borges just save his job?

"the staff has proven that they are completely inadequate in developing any sort of talent"
What the hell are you talking about? They took a squad that had never won more than 7 games and won a BCS bowl. I'm guessing guys like Will Campbell disagrew with your assessment, and I'm pretty certain there's a direct quote from Mike Martin saying that this staff is light years ahead of the previous in terms of developing talent. People forget that this is one of the youngest teams in cfb, yet somehow expect sophomores and freshman to play like juniors and seniors. Some of them are. But the number one problem on this team is youth, not coaching.

|5 weeks 4 days ago||Hell, even if Michigan wins||
Hell, even if Michigan wins this game, they likely need to win out to go to the CCG. MSU has the easiest possible schedule (no Wisconsin, PSU, or OSU) and will probably not lose another game, unless they lose to Nebraska. The ideal situation would be a win for Michigan this weekend (obviously) and Nebraska beating MSU. That would give MSU two conference losses and virtually no chance at surpassing UM unless UM loses to someone they shouldn't.

|7 weeks 23 hours ago||I'm not going to claim that||
I'm not going to claim that Borges was even close to perfect in games earlier this year, but it's probably hard to call an offense when your offensive line has absolutely zero push and shoddy pass protection and a quarterback that turns the ball over when he's under pressure. The offensive line showed up in this game, and it remains to be seen if that's more because of the opponent (like part of the story, but IU can't be much worse up front than Akron/UConn) or because they are starting to work together well.

Read the Mattison presser. The whole game plan was to take away the big play, and make them make mistakes in the short game. That's exactly what the defense did. Mattison was happy with the performance because they executed the game plan perfectly. I'm sure they would have been more aggressive had we not been up 14 points for most of the game.
If you think about it, it's a pretty sound strategy. Rees is known to be a good passer, who occasionally makes mistakes. Make him get as few yards as possible each play - ~5 ypa - and rely on him to turn the ball over. Which he did. Sure, they gave up the yards, but they gave up almost nothing after the catch and they didn't allow a pass over 23 yards in 51 attempts. That's damn impressive. I don't think the defense did poorly given the game plan, and Mattison doesn't either.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||I understand where you're||
I understand where you're coming from. Yes, we all remember 2007 (that was my first Michigan football game), but 2013 Akron =/= 2007 App State. Akron is a complete disaster of a team, and we can verify that. App State was a good team, but everyone brushed them off because they were FCS. In summary, I don't think you're wrong to maintain a mindset where anyone can win on a given day, but if there ever was a sure win, this is it.
