Was UCLAs OL any good? Just because there are a couple of good freshman and sophomore linemen across the country does not mean it's a common phenomenon. We shouldn't have to rely on true freshman and sophomore OL to fill the starting spots in our OL. The reason we had to in 2013 is solely because of Rich Rod.

Molk and Huyge were holdovers from Carr, but point taken. However, there was not much Hoke could do about the OL in 2013. He has been recruiting OL like mad but we won't see the true benefit of that until next year since they take so long to develop. Besides, what Carr left RR is irrelevant in terms of what RR left Hoke on the offensive line, unless you count Molk and Huyge, which should be credited to Carr.

Who's to say he didn't try to get transfers?
|22 hours 2 min ago||Yes, we were god awful, but||
Yes, we were god awful, but arguably for reasons out of Hoke's control. Fix the offensive line, get a viable run game, and that's a pretty decent team. We had (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) a total of 6 scholarship OL on the roster, due to You Know Who's recruiting failures.
Sure, it's easy to blame Rich Rod, but Hoke sure isn't the reason the offensive line was so shorthanded last year.

"KLS is a building block type of prospect. Match him with Peppers in the secondary and it could be like if Michigan had gotten Hand."
Uh, what? Not sure if I get what you're saying here. Hand was a DL. What do Peppers and this kid have to do with Hand or DLs at all?
And I don't want to argue that winning games won't help recruiting, but we seem to have been doing fine anyhow. But I agree, lets win some damn games.

That's... actually really an accurate perspective, I think. The way we lost agains ND, Nebraska, and OSU that year was really aggravating. The one-dimensional "Do somethind please, Denard" offense really set us back in those games. The SC game was a good game and a good performance through and through, although it would have been interesting to see how JT Floyd would have helped our secondary in the key moments of that game. The Bama loss was.. well, we just were as good of a team as they were, and it showed.

I don't understand the people who are saying that recruiting has been lacking. This class is just smaller. The average stars of our recruits is as high as anyone - literally anyone, including Alabama.
Unless they are referring to the couple of guys who looked to bean leaning toward M and going elsewhere, in which case I will tell them that that has always happened, and always will happen, regardless of the coach/team performance. That's just how recruiting works sometimes.

I just got done watching the highlights from last year's version of The Game. It gave me a lot of hope for this season. We were evenly matched with a team that had won 23 straight games, even with our broken offensive line. We lost less key players than they did.
We know what this team is capable of when firing on all cylinders, which Nussmeier will hopefully help us do more often. Our defense will be among the best in the conference. None of this is revolutionary perspective, but if our offensive line becomes even serviceable, we have a stable of talented backs and recievers that can make this offense very dangerous as well, not to mention a pretty decent QB. Fix our offensive line, and we have a contender for the Big Ten title, and an outside shot at being a contender for a national title.
The problem being, fixing our offensive line is easier said than done. But if we have a pretty decent season this year (9+ wins in the regular season), that will be a huge springboard for next year, when our roster should be loaded and deep nearly everywhere, along with an experienced and veteran offensive line. The future is bright, my friends.

"Like maybe Michigan should have tried to keep doing the zone stuff they were good at."
I don't disagree, but isn't this site's stance also that Rich Rod was right by running the spread in 2008, even though that's not what we were "good at?" Why does Rich Rod get a pass for doing this and installing his system from day 1 and Hoke does not?

I don't care if they play pissed off. I just want them to play well. I did not feel like there was a single game last year where I came away feeling like "man, the team did outstandingly well today!" Aside from possibly Notre Dame.

But really though, 2006 defense for $2? Sure, they weren't perfect but if I remember correctly they had the #1 rushing defense in the country that season with ~40 yds given per game. That's a steal, in my book.
I'd take the 2010 offense, 2006 defense, Denard, the '85 schedule and Bo.

What makes you think they even care if people show up? It's free, and it's a practice (coaches have said this many times over). I don't know why people are acting like it's a benefit to the program or it makes a big difference one way or the other. I mean, sure, I would like it if it were more interesting and a game-like atmosphere, but that's not really what they're trying to do with it, so why be mad about it?

Objectively, where have we "lacked development" anywhere besides the OL? Replace the 2013 OL with the 2011 OL and I think that we win 10 games in 2013. The rest of the team was competent to pretty darn good. The OL just overshadowed everything. We had a dangerous QB/WR combo that didnt always show through because of the OL. Our defense was pretty good until asked to stop drive after drive on short fields. If the OL last year is even average, Michigan is a top 15ish team in all likelihood.

This is a bit get off my lawn-ish, but can people really not go to a game and ignore their phone for 3 and a half hours? It was annoying to not be able to text friends and relatives about the game but the last thing Michigan Stadium and humanity needs is everyone staring at Facebook in the stands.

However much you think Comcast sucks, Time Warner tops their suckage by a wide margin. I've had experience with both, and Time Warner is by far the worst company I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. You have to try to have as terrible of customer support as they do.

I would love a 9-10 win year. We do have a lot of potential losses though (@ND, @MSU, @OSU) not to mention a couple of potentiall rough games at home. This whole season hinges on if the OL can get any better while losing two NFL tackles. IF the line gets to average, I see about 9 wins. But I think that's a fairly large if.
