29 weeks 7 hours ago B1G Rule

I believe if the B1G has 6 teams with the sport it's a rule that they have to form a B1G conference, thus the ECAC and other conferences that currently hold the B1G lax teams would lose them automatically.

Adding MD and Rutgers is great for B1G lacrosse because it greatly accelerates that timeline, because now we only need one more team.  MSU, Illinois, NW ... I'm looking at you.  It also makes it more attractive for a team to be added, because that school will know that their creation of a team will form a B1G conference, and with that come all the benefits.  With B1G network needing spring programming (they broadcast UM/OSU last year), it's low hanging fruit for any savvy athletic director.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

1 year 28 weeks ago Chicago

Totally agree the game should be in Chicago.  There is a ridiculous number of Big Ten grads here.  Even as a Michigan fan I would pay $25 bucks to catch the game in Soldier Field, and I know the UW-NIU game attracted a lot of people who weren't affiliated with either school.

1 year 42 weeks ago Fraser's Pub!

Major omission, as local as it gets.

Fits into Brian's category: I'm tired and I want something as mellow as possible.

With a litte: I want to get the real story about stuff going on from people who actually know

3 years 4 weeks ago Do your homework

Tim has been doing an awesome job covering the team all year, look back at old posts and you'll realize he's been very thorough and has great sources.  It's just a very common misconception that the UM lax team receives all sorts of money from the actual school, and that the actual school is funding the new lacrosse facilities.  Private donors that JP has generated are responsible for this building, and Rec sports is responsible for the proposed renovation of Elbel for use as a multi-purpose field, and outdoor home of rec sports.  Any momentum the team has is because of John Paul and the efforts of those around the program.

Also, comments that get personal like your last one are not constructive, and distract readers of this board from the message of the post, which is the success of a great Michigan team.

3 years 5 weeks ago Last Night

Clark McIntyre scored one of the best goals of the season last night, swimming through two defenders and ripping a lefty shot on the run off the inside post of the top right corner.  Absolutely sick.

This game should be close.  Michigan clawed back from being down 6 to win in last year's championship game.  Two championship losses in a row for Chapman has definitely produced some bad blood.  Former laxers in Chicago will be gathering to watch the game tonight, Go Blue!

3 years 5 weeks ago BYU and New Tourny Schedule

22 Dan Cole should be BYU's best player now that Elliot Grow is out.  He's 24 or 25, having played two years, leaving for his mission, and then returning to the team.  He has great stick skills, a hard outside shot, and a physical dodge.  The faceoff battle will be important to control the momentum of the game, Cone vs. Reinard, two exceptional faceoff men.  Their LSM 10 Britton Cone is overrated and dirty, usually extending too far, getting out of position and leaving his defense in a bad position.  He does get a lot of GBs though.

New tournament schedule:

Wednesday, May 12th Game Division Participants Location
10:00 - 12:00pm 14 Division I (6) Oregon vs. (11) Colorado Field 8
10:00 - 12:00pm 16 Division I (8) Brigham Young vs. (9) Michigan State Field 10
12:30 - 2:30pm 17 Division II Quarterfinal: Grand Valley State vs. Davenport Field 8
12:30 - 2:30pm 18 Division II Quarterfinal: Utah Valley vs. St. John's Field 10
3:00 - 5:00pm 21 Division II Quarterfinal: Dayton vs. Westminster Field 8
3:00 - 5:00pm 22 Division II Quarterfinal: St. Thomas vs. Grove City Field 10

Thursday, May 13th Game Division Participants Location
4:00 - 6:00pm 19 Division I Quarterfinal: Chapman vs. Minnesota-Duluth TBD
4:00 - 6:00pm 20 Division I Quarterfinal: Arizona State vs. (WG14) TBD
7:00 - 9:00pm 23 Division I Quarterfinal: Colorado State vs. (WG15) TBD
7:00 - 9:00pm 24 Division I Quarterfinal: Michigan vs. (WG16) TBD

Having played in this tournament before, I know that 4 games in 5 days with the third day off is already an intense endurance test.  They can't stretch the event out over weekends like the NCAA due to travel requirements and budget restrictions.  Three games in a row should make for an even more brutal finish.  This should be an advantage for Michigan, as they pride themselves on their conditioning (and have as much or more depth than anybody).

3 years 6 weeks ago Great Story

Jerry Hanlon is a true class act. I second your comment, he's one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. He has MCed the Bob Ufer Quarterback Club banquet in the past, and always does a great job.

In 2008, Jerry spoke to the Michigan lacrosse team about overcoming adversity, and I truly believe his words inspired the unprecedented work ethic for that team. Since then the team has won two national championships and is the number one tournament seed this year. A bit off topic, but worthy of mention.

3 years 7 weeks ago Budget Clarity The team budget is actually just under $0.5 MM, of which $10k comes from the athletic department. The bulk of the funding comes from a combination of player dues and private support. The biggest impact that varsity club status had on the team was: 1) The equipment from the athletic department supplier (formerly Nike, now adidas) 2) The team was held to the same standards as an NCAA team. This includes things like eligibility and code of conduct (no more kegs on team buses) It's a pretty widespread myth that the team receives a lot of support from the university. The adidas gear for the team is actually not even included in the university contract, but adidas has made Michigan a feature team in their lacrosse marketing due to the strong brand image and team success, and therefore gives the team whatever they need. The truth is that John Paul has built the program without much support from the school.
3 years 7 weeks ago Good for MI lax

MSU stepping up and fielding a much improved team is great for the sport in the state of MI. They've had issues with coach continuity in the past, so hopefully they'll be able to hold onto Hicks long enough to build a stronger foundation.

The fact that there are two improving high profile in-state options for high school lacrosse players in Michigan will only improve the homegrown talent. Michigan is still a long way from consistently developing the type of players that come from the east coast, and even some of the western states. Better college programs will result in more youth and high school participation, more and better coaches, and more pressure on these schools to elevate their respective teams to DI varsity, where they should be headed.

I know the Michigan team enjoys dominating the CCLA year in and year out, but they also know it's in everybody's best interest to have more good teams in the region.
