I don't doubt that George Mason got a temporary boost from their Final Four run. But how much of a benefit is that today? What percentage of mid majors ever make it to the Sweet Sixteen, let alone the Final Four?

Interesting links. The focus of the Forbes and ESPN articles are the great success stories though. While even bad records will lead to people hearing about the university, it seems hard to believe that schools like Kansas or Eastern Michigan are getting much benefit from their football programs. The ESPN article references a media firm claiming Butler received "a publicity value of $1.2 billion" due to their 2010-11 runs in the NCAA tournament. Perhaps, but it's a bit trickier to say how much extra money those runs helped bring in to the university, and nobody can claim it comes close to even a tenth of the "publicity value."
I'm actually surprised more schools haven't dropped football. As the salaries and expenses soar, at some point it would seem prudent for schools, especially the lower level ones, to begin asking if the cost is worth the reward.

Once you're into full blown geezerhood, a late game like this works quite well if you want to just watch the second half. That's about the time we wake up to pee and walk around the house muttering to ourselves anyway.

He's also known as the Bloomington Flasher. He just forgot he had pants on and was on tv.

One of "Oregon's multiple bouncy 6'6" guys crashing the boards" that got mentioned in the open thread, Dillon Brooks, is a Freshman who had 7 boards and scored 14 points. Oh, and by the way, he's from Mississauga Ontario. Did Michigan completely overlook him in recruiting?
|2 days 22 hours ago||Well, I did see an option||
Well, I did see an option play in the game, but let's be real, nobody was calling for Michigan to run anything similar to what Bo did in the 60s and 70s. What some wanted, was something more like an updated version of what was run with QBs like Jim Harbaugh, Elvis Grbac, Brian Griese, Tom Brady, and John Navarre, but somewhere along the line with Hoke's teams the passing game has atrophied to where opposing defenses didn't really need to worry so much about that part of Michigan's offense.
|3 days 1 min ago||For me, Hoke's biggest issue||
For me, Hoke's biggest issue as coach is that he seems to have handicapped his OCs. It's not just when time is getting short. His philosophy seems to be run the ball and win the time of possession. He seems more concerned with preventing the other team from scoring than having his offense score. There are times when this philosophy does make sense, but not all game, every game. We've not seen the offense turned loose this year at all, like we did last year in two games, against Indiana and OSU.

I notice that he made it with his left hand. I wonder if he could make the same catch with his right hand, that is, has he completely recovered from his nerve damage?

I do think the talent on this team should make it easier to attract a quality coach. This is not a team with the kind of holes and question marks that RR and Hoke each inherited.

I assume you mean Florida Zook and not Illinois Zook. Though it took him more than a year, Bob Stoops also greatly benefitted from a stocked team when he took over

I'm sure having experience as an AD would help in plenty of areas for this job. I'm not sure how it magically qualifies someone to pick a good football coach though, and this is one area where I'm not sure past experience is all that necessary.

It's not just the money for game day experience, it's the time as well. As others have pointed out, the tv timeouts make the games too long, and add in the couple to several hours driving and parking most people endure, and it just doesn't make sense for a lot of people to spend that time and money.

Unfortunately, the new bigs don't really even have anybody on the team to practice against that will test them in the same way they'll be tested once the Big 10 season starts.

Here's a quote from Pickens earlier this week when asked about Gundy:
The question: Are you still supportive of Gundy?
The answer: I’m certainly supportive of Oklahoma State University. I’m always going to be for OSU, I don’t care who coaches ‘em.

Living in Oklahoma, I hear quite a bit about both Gundy and Stoops. Gundy seems to have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, including T Boone Pickens. Quite honestly, I don't think either Gundy or Stoops should be on our A list for coach.

I remember a guy who played center for Michigan a few years back who seemed too skinny: Phil Hubbard. He seemed to do just fine, even as a freshman. I'm not saying DJ Wilson is on the same level as Hubbard, but skinny guys can play the 5 and can use their quickness and jumping ability to out play the Kent Bensons on the court.

I don't really care where Michigan is ranked before a season starts. What matters is where it is at the end of the season.

Welcome to the board! One thing to be aware of, though, is Michigan fans don't refer to Michigan as "big blue," and you'll sometimes get hostile reactions around here for using that. My daughter's a dumbass (takes afer her father) and attended MSU (in reality she's smart and now in grad school).

You're right, we are all pissed off and sick with the losing. But it wasn't that long ago that you seemed to be one of the program's biggest cheerleaders. I'm just suggesting that situations aren't usually all black or all white, they are varying shades of gray. The football program and Michigan athletics is no different.

Unless the team totally collapses their last games, I don't think Pelini has to worry about losing his job. The fans will call for his head, but I really don't see any better options waiting in the wings for them.
